Well, actually she was Austrian! Her father was Austrian and she only got a german passport because Austria was annected by the nazis ... Ant there's one famous quote:

"Je suis francaise pour trois quarts, pour un quart je suis viennoise" (I'm french for three quarters and viennese for one quarter/Zu drei Viertel bin ich Französin, zu einem Viertel Wienerin) - she didn't even mention Germany ... She always had problems with the German press and the german public
