Yeah my friend who owned one always complained about it.
He loved his car so much though. Never would've sold it. On road trips he would have to car pool with me lol. Like 3 fill ups to go from Sacramento to San Francisco with the S2K.
I test drove both h base and CR back to back before buying the base model 5 months ago..The hardtop inconvienence when using the car as a daily driver was too much for my wife to handle. We both love the car and the harsh ride is normal for us as we both have sportbikes :) Now if she would shift a litle lower in the revs my mpg would improve lol
I have a GPW '02 and love it. The only thing I'd want from the CR is the spoiler, front lip and hard top. But I guess that would make me a poser. I'd imagine the transmission on the CR is a lit smoother than an AP1.
S2000 CR is a waste of money to me, i'd rather buy a stock Ap2 and fix it up myself with the left over money which would make my s2k faster and sexier looking. CR is waste of $
Very well put good sir! I fully agree with that opinion. I have a little more than stock ap1 and I wouldn't have it any other way..........except maybe even a little bit less stock than it is.
its a hard top convertible but its not an electric one like u would find in an merc slk, u take it down manually and set it down in your garage when u dont need it, if u want an electric foldable top, the base s2000 comes with an electric self folding soft top
Lol great car, and its rwd LOL. I mean the car costs like 45 drive out, lol i would prefer to use that amount of money to get either NSX or 335ci. Ya feel me
Because its only one of 1500 or so made, and because the suspension is stiffer thanks to harder shocks, springs, and bigger stabilizer bars. So its a track car for the road.
did you listen to what he said about everything else being well worth the upgrade? For an extra 3000 from your "standard s2000" you recieve... Removable aluminum hardtop firmer springs, dampers, suspension stiffer front and rear stabilization bars quicker steering ratio larger 255/40 rear tires sport tuned exhaust special edition rims rear spoiler and front spoiler (actually functional) then you can add your A/C for 1000 and end up gaining from the cost of everything else
we get the hard top on the standered one in the uk. the s2000 is a lot cheaper here which is why i think its not worth the extra which is why we brits prob have not got the cr verstion becouse it would be over priced when you look at the lotus and ather track car, i stick with my normal s2000 engines the same
Did ya notice..the guy NEVER said once he would trade his 2002 AP1 for a CR... and he had every chance to do so. MOST S2000 owners prefer to live in the 9200 redline range. Nevertheless, beautiful car BUT I'll stick with my AP1 and apparently, from what the KBB guy drives, So will he! :)
LOL suuuuure bro..he disses it soo hard, he's still driving it! PLUS, he never said he would upgrade either. Most AP1 drivers know when they got it good.
As a result their cars focus on performance and everything else should be taken as extra. You got the engine, the suspension, and the way you interact with them. As long as those 3 things are working the car is doing exactly what it should be.
The Elise is not for everyone. It's a driver's car from a racing company. Not a sports car from a car company.
Nicecar2008: Your friend says its FWD???? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH that's the funniest things ive ever read in regards to the S2000; guess your friend doesn't own it or he'd know its RWD. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
To enjoy this car you have to consider something. General Motors and Honda are car companies that happen to race cars. When they build a sports car first and foremost they have a reputation as a car company to uphold. So they make the car durable then they make it perform well. Lotus on the other hand is a racing company that happens to sell cars from time to time.
lotus cant even make their own engine they suck. so you know what hp per liter is? its what honda is the best at and that means they make the best engines in the world so your just not smart when it comes to engineering but its ok dont worry.
Ha, you think it's a poor choice that Lotus went with a reliable company to power their car?
Far from it.
When was the last time Honda produced a car that could handle nearly as well as the Elise or Exige? The NSX came close, but then, it WAS more powerful than the Elise.
You can trash talk all you want, that's not what I'm here to do. I like the S2k's, but I think it's ridiculous that they pass them off as "ultra-lightweight"
I have a daily beater 98 Integra that weighs less.
Lotus also does not "suck" They dominated Formula One for many of years.
And their engineering? They're THE leaders and go-to guys for chassis and suspension engineering. They helped design the GT-Rs suspension, and IT'S a class leading car, as far as handling goes. They've also done a LOT of suspension consulting for other cars and companies.
So get off your stupid "high horse" from Honda. I'm not spreading car-hate like you, because I'm not an idiot.
hmm...the elise is around $50k. A far cry from the CR. I've seen CRs going for about $35k.
The CR actually has the AP1 steering rack ratio, BTW. So his 2002 has the same ratio rack as the CR. The AP2 has the slower rack. The early AP1s were also in the high 2700lb range.
The CR does have unique springs, dampers, and other parts, however. It's the only AP2 i'd trade my AP1 for.
Whhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy spend extra cash on an S2k with no A/C or radio that's "100 pounds lighter!" than the base S2000, when you can get a Lotus Elise, which looks a LOT better, and has A/C and a radio/CD changer.
With the CR package and dealer markup, you could easily be $2,000 away from a base Elise.
Or you could get a very low mileage Elise/Exige and have a car that looks (a lot) better and handles better.
elise brand new is much more expensive. and plus weight difference isnt really a big factor because most people buying these cars wont hit the tracks.
The Elise is "Brand New"? It's been around for almost a decade! Maybe more (not an expert on the S1 Elises)
And don't say that "weight doesn't make a difference, just because you're not on a track. Will an 8,000lb Hummer handle the same around town as an S2k? No.
Driving the S2k is like driving an Elise with two 350lb fat chicks sitting on top of the car.
There are some things that the Honda beats the Lotus at. Handling isn't one of them.
You SAID weight doesn't make a difference. But it does. YES the two are separated by price.
But how can Honda pass this off as a "lightweight" minimalist car? It has no A/C, no radio? Why then, does it still weight so much. (CR curb weight is approx. 2,765lbs)
My POS '98 Integra four-door weighs 2,643 pounds, and it's got room for five, a spacious trunk, an A/C, radio, CD players, and like I said before four-doors.
I don't hate the S2000, but it's not the lightest thing ever.
because it takes a boatload of bracing/extra material to make a convertible cars chassis as stiff as one with a roof, just look up any coupe car thats been converted to topless (aston martin had one on top gear, look that up) and you'll understand.
Great review! I have driven many AP1 and AP2 S2000's and I recently bought my CR. I've had it at Gingerman Raceway and wow does it deliver. Much less twitchy at speed vs stock and more grip through the turns. Don't underestimate the value of proper tuning. All the subtle changes add up to a well put together track car. Most DIY people will not achieve the level of chasis refinement on their own that Shigeru Uehara has with the CR.
But if I would be You, I would say more about CR is not a proper cabrio any more. For example basic S2k has fastest auto roof in the world! So, one of super advantages of S2k is lost! And, CR, it's less sporty then Mugen S2k, but cost the same! Actualy, CR does NOT have any proper racing modifications, it's not worth loosing auto cabrio for 1 second faster lap time on track. In real life basic S2k is far better choise!
Nice video, except, the CR's have been selling for WAY MORE than $2,000 over the base model. Dealer mark up has been RIDICULOUS. They've been selling in the low $40,000's which is a rip off considering you can modify a base model ap2 to be faster while still saving a lot of money. I'd rather buy the base model ap2 and mod the shit out of it while still saving myself several thousand dollars. Same thing goes for the new Mugen Civic SI. Only that one is even more ridiculous...
where do you live? This has a direct impact on what the dealer mark up is going to be. I work for South Motors Honda in Miami, FL and also have friends that work at Braman Honda. The dealr mark ups here are RIDICULOUS for both the CR and the Mugen SI. The Mugen SI is going for the same price as a base model ap2 and the sad part is, it's not even half as fast(or good looking imo). The Cr is being marked up about 8-10K over the ap2. The small "mods" it has over the ap2 are NOT worth 8-10K.
lol, they're problaby going to have to take a few more off before somebody buys it. A few weeks ago some guy actually bought a CR at msrp at Braman Honda. I couldn't believe it...

ShortySIG552 3 years ago
that is a hard top? but it is not automatic.
NiceCar2008 3 years ago
lotus cant even make their own engine they suck. so you know what hp per liter is? its what honda is the best at and that means they make the best engines in the world so your just not smart when it comes to engineering but its ok dont worry.
ap1hondaking 3 years ago
Ha, you think it's a poor choice that Lotus went with a reliable company to power their car?
Far from it.
When was the last time Honda produced a car that could handle nearly as well as the Elise or Exige? The NSX came close, but then, it WAS more powerful than the Elise.
You can trash talk all you want, that's not what I'm here to do. I like the S2k's, but I think it's ridiculous that they pass them off as "ultra-lightweight"
I have a daily beater 98 Integra that weighs less.
Quit hating
ShortySIG552 3 years ago
Lotus also does not "suck" They dominated Formula One for many of years.
And their engineering? They're THE leaders and go-to guys for chassis and suspension engineering. They helped design the GT-Rs suspension, and IT'S a class leading car, as far as handling goes. They've also done a LOT of suspension consulting for other cars and companies.
So get off your stupid "high horse" from Honda. I'm not spreading car-hate like you, because I'm not an idiot.
We CAN coexist. Learn toleration.

hmm...the elise is around $50k.

The CR is still a heavy car. ~ 2765 pounds.
Elise? 1,984
I'm Lotus Biased
ShortySIG552 3 years ago
well
elise brand new is much more expensive. and plus weight difference isnt really a big factor because most people buying these cars wont hit the tracks.
golf1262 3 years ago
The Elise is "Brand New"? It's been around for almost a decade! Maybe more (not an expert on the S1 Elises)
And don't say that "weight doesn't make a difference, just because you're not on a track. Will an 8,000lb Hummer handle the same around town as an S2k? No.
Driving the S2k is like driving an Elise with two 350lb fat chicks sitting on top of the car.
There are some things that the Honda beats the Lotus at. Handling isn't one of them.
ShortySIG552 3 years ago
you're putting words into my mouth
i said brand new elise meaning elise you bought fresh from a dealer, because you were comparing new s2k to an used elise.
and lets stay focuses on the topic, i wasnt fuking comparing s2k to an hummer, we're comparing s2k to elise.
and i like both cars, i could careless which i drive. you put your opinion down, and im stating my opinion
I WOULD BE HAPPY TO OWN ANY OF THE TWO CARS.
and next time, dont jump to conclusion and put words into peoples mouths
golf1262 3 years ago
You SAID weight doesn't make a difference. But it does. YES the two are separated by price.
But how can Honda pass this off as a "lightweight" minimalist car? It has no A/C, no radio? Why then, does it still weight so much. (CR curb weight is approx. 2,765lbs)
My POS '98 Integra four-door weighs 2,643 pounds, and it's got room for five, a spacious trunk, an A/C, radio, CD players, and like I said before four-doors.
I don't hate the S2000, but it's not the lightest thing ever.
ShortySIG552 3 years ago
grrrr
you totally misunderstood me
if i have s2k or elise as a daily car meaning going to school, publix, w.e.
it wouldnt mind having the weight difference between these 2 cars
golf1262 3 years ago
Oh, sorry.
Gotchya.
Yeah, it's weird, if I the Elise didn't exist, I'd probably get a 350Z.
That's even heavier.
Sorry if I came off as a jerk, no hard feelings.
ShortySIG552 3 years ago
because it takes a boatload of bracing/extra material to make a convertible cars chassis as stiff as one with a roof, just look up any coupe car thats been converted to topless (aston martin had one on top gear, look that up) and you'll understand.

yea but not price tag biased.. theyre in completely different price ranges

Sharp08CR 3 years ago
Thanks... a very good review! A proper one!
In real life basic S2k is far better choise!

cool looking car. very small
FLip8822 3 years ago
Nice video, except, the CR's have been selling for WAY MORE than $2,000 over the base model. Dealer mark up has been RIDICULOUS. They've been selling in the low $40,000's which is a rip off considering you can modify a base model ap2 to be faster while still saving a lot of money. I'd rather buy the base model ap2 and mod the shit out of it while still saving myself several thousand dollars. Same thing goes for the new Mugen Civic SI. Only that one is even more ridiculous...
petunia21186 3 years ago 4
i just came back
they are willing to take 2 grand off
but its been sitting their for 8 months
dabocx56 3 years ago
where do you live? This has a direct impact on what the dealer mark up is going to be. I work for South Motors Honda in Miami, FL and also have friends that work at Braman Honda. The dealr mark ups here are RIDICULOUS for both the CR and the Mugen SI. The Mugen SI is going for the same price as a base model ap2 and the sad part is, it's not even half as fast(or good looking imo). The Cr is being marked up about 8-10K over the ap2. The small "mods" it has over the ap2 are NOT worth 8-10K.
petunia21186 3 years ago
I got my normal Si sedan for a bit under sticker. But the Mugen did go for 37.
However the Cr is still there! now its 4 grand off!
dabocx56 3 years ago
lol, they're problaby going to have to take a few more off before somebody buys it. A few weeks ago some guy actually bought a CR at msrp at Braman Honda. I couldn't believe it...
