  • Your style is very beautiful and inspiring. I particularly like the map.

  • how long did it take you to make the book?

  • @AdventureTimeVids100 About a month, more or less.

  • When I was a kid I used to sketch in my notebooks BUT my teacher would say : let him draw it helps him think . But really I had 80's on my tests with a nice drawing where's there is a thing rote : leave ur calculations here .For me it was:leave ur sketches HERE.

    ~Skylar

  • That is amazing! You must tell me how you do that.

  • @snugglebutty The video or the book? :P

  • @matttie18 yes man, thanks alot :D

  • wow very nice! i wanna put alot drawings on the internet but im scared people will rip it off.. am i supposed to be scared? how do u look at it when putting them up?

  • @FeedYourWalls The thing is, everything in one way or another is copied or inspired by someone pr something else. Style I'm not too bothered about, but if someone blatantly ripped off my idea, then I have rights as an artist as it's a copyright issue.

To be honest, I'm not too precious over my work as I was and I'm flattered if people find it inspiring, just as long as they don't do the same thing and make money from my idea. Does that make sense?

  • Outstanding!!!!

  • Bravicimo! I really enjoy your work and style. The "unfoldiness" is top notch!

  • wonderful work.

  • wow! excellent video

and good job on the sketch book!

  • SO......COOL!!!

  • Such control...and patience. Well done!

  • damn, that was a great sketch/comic book. keep up the good work.

  • Fabulous job Matt! I'll be looking for your sketchbook with in comes to Vancouver, BC, Canada! Just finishing mine up now.

  • Excellent work, you really got talent! I've send my book for the project in too, in August 2011, mine was full in no time :-)

  • @augurei Thanks. Yeah I'm currently thinking up Mat Marvel 2 for the Limited Edition project now haha.

  • Awesome book. It's got a great Jules Verne kind of feel to it. I would love to read the text.

  • @Indiapaintbrush Wow, that's a compliment-and-a-half! Thank you.

It should be digitized in the next few weeks. Keep an eye out for that on my Facebook page & blog.

  • Cool map!

  • @jonnyroasta Pretty cool, eh?

  • Thats amazing. creativity, talent, enough technical skill to be making that art with an office pen. . . Wow. . . I hope to be as good as you some day. . .

  • @smllvllnrd4243 Thank you :)

  • That's FREAKIN amazing!!! You got to show me how you do all that shading with a epn.

  • @xXKhaoticRinoXx I might do a tutorial in the future, but main tip is ... if you want it to make a dark line of shade - apply the pressure of the pen harder and crosshatch. If you want to shade a little lighter, lift the tip of the pen off the paper like you would with a pencil and shade gently.

  • Hey can you please post a tutorial on how to draw the characters you do, i really love the style and have always wanted to create a book like you did. Also how did you go about creating the cover page.

  • @BlockonBlock Hey, Yeah I could do that in a few weeks if you're interested. Haven't done a tutorial for agessss.

And the front cover was I took a good piece of coloured paper (stolen stash of GFSmith paper from college ;) haha) drew the image on it. Stitched it to the front cover with white thread. then I used a scalpel to cut the viewfinder out and drew the title when I could position it in the middle. Hope that helps :)

  • @matttie18 thanks a lot man your sketchbook work was a huge inspiration for what im working on right now :) and i missed the sketch book project this year but hopefully i can get into it in 2013.

  • @BlockonBlock Google The Sketchbook Project Limited Edition ... you could take part in that. Deadline to complete the book is April.

  • omg good work man damn I swear I have not really enjoyed drawing since after i graduated in 07 and thats bc all my friends stopped drawing and I was no longer around my art teacher. I feel like its so much I have not done but yet without no one better than me around I fell off but your work helps. How do u go about writing your stories?

  • @scarvello This one was really a spark of an idea that I did a page at a time. I didn't know how it was going to end or what would happen, but as I was doing one page I had an idea of how the next few pages may pan out. Otherwise, most stories I come up with are re-worked and re-worked in a sketchbook. The ideas come from random drawings that I do and I try to find a story within them.

Thank you for your comment too!

  • oh my eff this book is fantastic!

  • @maddsketch Thanks man, just checked out some of your stuff. Realllly nice. You doing game design or something?

  • @matttie18 I run a small tiny game studio making indie games. I design and program the games.

  • @maddsketch Oh fantastic mate. I've recently applied for some work experience in the art department of an game company not far from me. I wouldn't know where to begin with making one though!

  • @matttie18 kool man! all the power to ya!

  • this is amazing.

  • Random question... is that a BIC pen? Love using those for sketching.. lol. And this is amazing.

  • @FilipinayNERD Yes it is. I like biros more than pencils sometimes though in the past people have advised me not to use them because they don't offer a range of tones. RUBBISHHHH.

  • wow, really really cool!! i wish i had that much talent drawing people haha

  • @MrCoreyfwilks Thanks. I'm better at drawing animals, believe me ;)

  • absolutely awesome. Made me want to go watch all my favorites. i wish you the best of a beautiful career if this is what you want to do professionally. and by the looks of it you definitely have the talent. best wishes. and much love.

  • @distortedblack Thank you. Yeah do so, I've kept all mine because I like to document everything haha

  • love the idea to show your notebook like this, im doing mine too. its taking me more than i expected! thanks for sharing, amazing art

  • awesome work!

  • Whoa, really awesome job!

  • Thank you for responding. I am so excited to see this quality of work continuing in the project. I liked your idea of the video also, and now I plan to do one as I make my book. Great ideas.

  • @Sadieat1 Good luck with your book and I look forward to the video too :)

  • This is a wonderful book! Thanks for making the video and posting. Just love the map fold out. How did you to that part-additional pages?? Going to watch that part again. Well done. Inspiring. Working on mine.....

  • @Sadieat1 I had to add a few plain pages as well to the book apart from the map. All I did was sewn in the pages, the map was painted and planned out before it was sewn in so that it would rip away while people looked through it. I used cartridge paper just to be safe too.

  • Oh crap! Now I'm really intimidated! I haven't started mine and am having anxiety over it haha.

  • @notyetaladie Aw bless you. Don't be silly. I'm just a try hard hahaha

  • O.O TRES BELLE!!!!!!!! SO BEAUTIFUL!

  • awesome. Just Love it. Great job. :)

  • SICK!! love it!

  • Excellent, well done, i really love the map :)

  • That is absolutely incredible! Great job! You finished so fast too haha! It must have been fun :). I never have the patience to add extreme details to my drawing, so just seeing that quality in yours makes me want to do a better job in my sketchbooks. Overall, awesome work. Thanks for sharing!

  • @AllykaArt Thanks. Was my 1st time doing it so I pretty much just jumped right into it. I'm a bit of a perfectionist really - my own fault. Good luck with your book :)

  • That looks amazing! I'm excited that the tour is coming to Toronto - I'll check it out!

  • You are completelt utterly deliciously amazing and I can so see you winning this Mattie!

  • I hope they pick this as one of the top few sketch book to look out for, if they don't...they must be out of their mind. love the composition.

  • cool looks great
