When I was a kid I used to sketch in my notebooks BUT my teacher would say : let him draw it helps him think . But really I had 80's on my tests with a nice drawing where's there is a thing rote : leave ur calculations here .For me it was:leave ur sketches HERE.
wow very nice! i wanna put alot drawings on the internet but im scared people will rip it off.. am i supposed to be scared? how do u look at it when putting them up?
@FeedYourWalls The thing is, everything in one way or another is copied or inspired by someone pr something else. Style I'm not too bothered about, but if someone blatantly ripped off my idea, then I have rights as an artist as it's a copyright issue.
To be honest, I'm not too precious over my work as I was and I'm flattered if people find it inspiring, just as long as they don't do the same thing and make money from my idea. Does that make sense?
Thats amazing. creativity, talent, enough technical skill to be making that art with an office pen. . . Wow. . . I hope to be as good as you some day. . .
@xXKhaoticRinoXx I might do a tutorial in the future, but main tip is ... if you want it to make a dark line of shade - apply the pressure of the pen harder and crosshatch. If you want to shade a little lighter, lift the tip of the pen off the paper like you would with a pencil and shade gently.
Hey can you please post a tutorial on how to draw the characters you do, i really love the style and have always wanted to create a book like you did. Also how did you go about creating the cover page.
@BlockonBlock Hey, Yeah I could do that in a few weeks if you're interested. Haven't done a tutorial for agessss.
And the front cover was I took a good piece of coloured paper (stolen stash of GFSmith paper from college ;) haha) drew the image on it. Stitched it to the front cover with white thread. then I used a scalpel to cut the viewfinder out and drew the title when I could position it in the middle. Hope that helps :)
@matttie18 thanks a lot man your sketchbook work was a huge inspiration for what im working on right now :) and i missed the sketch book project this year but hopefully i can get into it in 2013.
omg good work man damn I swear I have not really enjoyed drawing since after i graduated in 07 and thats bc all my friends stopped drawing and I was no longer around my art teacher. I feel like its so much I have not done but yet without no one better than me around I fell off but your work helps. How do u go about writing your stories?
@scarvello This one was really a spark of an idea that I did a page at a time. I didn't know how it was going to end or what would happen, but as I was doing one page I had an idea of how the next few pages may pan out. Otherwise, most stories I come up with are re-worked and re-worked in a sketchbook. The ideas come from random drawings that I do and I try to find a story within them.
@maddsketch Oh fantastic mate. I've recently applied for some work experience in the art department of an game company not far from me. I wouldn't know where to begin with making one though!
@FilipinayNERD Yes it is. I like biros more than pencils sometimes though in the past people have advised me not to use them because they don't offer a range of tones. RUBBISHHHH.
absolutely awesome. Made me want to go watch all my favorites. i wish you the best of a beautiful career if this is what you want to do professionally. and by the looks of it you definitely have the talent. best wishes. and much love.
@VirginiaDogArtist Thanks, until then you can view the artwork - close up - on my Facebook fan page. Just search Mat Roff on Facebook, go to photos and select "The Sketchbook Project 2012".
Thank you for responding. I am so excited to see this quality of work continuing in the project. I liked your idea of the video also, and now I plan to do one as I make my book. Great ideas.
This is a wonderful book! Thanks for making the video and posting. Just love the map fold out. How did you to that part-additional pages?? Going to watch that part again. Well done. Inspiring. Working on mine.....
@Sadieat1 I had to add a few plain pages as well to the book apart from the map. All I did was sewn in the pages, the map was painted and planned out before it was sewn in so that it would rip away while people looked through it. I used cartridge paper just to be safe too.
That is absolutely incredible! Great job! You finished so fast too haha! It must have been fun :). I never have the patience to add extreme details to my drawing, so just seeing that quality in yours makes me want to do a better job in my sketchbooks. Overall, awesome work. Thanks for sharing!
@AllykaArt Thanks. Was my 1st time doing it so I pretty much just jumped right into it. I'm a bit of a perfectionist really - my own fault. Good luck with your book :)
Your style is very beautiful and inspiring. I particularly like the map.
