  • Heard Siouxsie first in '81 and was hooked ever since - there hadn't been a band quite like them and this song was strangely my favourite for years. Incidentally, she is taller than Robert Smith.

Budgie is underrated - so few drummers are creative enough to NOT use standard 2 and 4 beats - he often created a drum piece

  • good year remember it well 44 and still listening and being true to the old school yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh healthy and loving it capricorn

  • Steve Wright is such a turd.

  • siouxie never made it in the usa, they had such horrible taste in music only after siouxie and banshees started to go down and nirvana and other bans grew in the usa thats when suddenly the americans woke up, only to fall asleep again, americans have horrible taste in music, siouxie music is the 80s answer to doors, velvet underground, and new thing all together, my favorite band

  • @ukusapillage Many, many Americans (like myself) love the Banshees and other great bands of the era.. don't make generalizations it makes you sound small minded

  • My favourite S&B song, probably because it's so much like a Cure song & I'm more of a Cure fan. My guess is that Robert Smith played a large part in the composition of this song, musically at least. Siouxie's a gorgeous performer in her appearance, dance moves and gestures, which Robert obviously drew a lot from.

  • With just one note she can take you to another-more noble-plane.The only problem in the past 30+ years is that you're rudely pulled back.

  • One of their most underrated songs.

  • I

    never

    ever

    lose

    i'm

    the

    TERMINATORRRRRRRRR

  • I

    never

    i

    lose

  • Those were the days - style AND substance!

  • She looks like a female Robert Smith.

  • @destructingparabola And the guy on keyboards at 1:32 looks like a male Robert Smith. LOL... there's irony in there. ;)

  • @vsander09 that is robert smith..

  • i had hair like george michael, and now i look like the guy from the movie:"Powder". i lost my hair to alopecia UNIVERSALIS<---the WORSE kind,.,in 1996. see my channel for new photos of me without my wig..never released to the public before. thanks<-

  • Look it is Bert on keybords!!

  • @IamYOURmasterrrr Shut your sperm-filled mouth, you pathetic streak of vegan salad. Speak when I tell you, otherwise I shall kill you. Simple as.

    EE - I have spoken.

  • Your foolish for even compareing one to another, music is a taste

  • and baby im far from a troll. ;)!!!

  • and baby im far from a troll. ;)!!!

  • Lot of comments on here & other Siouxsie videos comparing her/them with modern singers/Pop acts. It's not valid comparing as Siouxsie & Banshees were an "alternative" band & still are. There were Pop singers in her era as well ie. ABBA , Bay City Rollers , Madonna , Bucks Fizz , Kim Carnes etc.... it would be more apt comparing Gaga , J-Lo , Beyonce....to these acts & not Siouxsie.. Wat the Banshees were doing at the time was different , groundbreaking and left of centre.....In other words GREAT

  • Thing is with this band, they actually dressed the same in the street (more or less), it wasn't an act, which made them so good. Gaga is a stage show (and she knows it) it helps sell records. Staggering vocal and can see where florence gets inspiration. The only negative on this clip is the comment from f***ing Steve (radio Tw*t) Wright, what a Wan**er.

  • Her voice gives me those wonderful chills every time. She is just breathtaking to me in her movements, and her earth-shattering voice. How haunting and beautiful she is!

  • I always count my blessings that I was a teenager when we had music like this, right time and right age to get it.

  • Love her music but she, in fact the whole band, should avoid being seen on their videos. Her odd movements are kind of a turn off. Sioux is better not seen but heard!

  • @1disaffected Hey,we all have our opinions, but I have to say,I love the way Siouxsie moves and dances. I find her movements very exotic, sensual, and very beautiful.

  • oh .she is still special lyrical god voice beyond and beyond of gaga no harmony in her songs..souxsie.so gorgeous..gosh

  • yep i used to have same make up wish i was 18 again

  • You'd F$@k em Both tho'!!!

  • Im 17 and I totally love S&TB lol

  • What's up with the twat commentary at the very end?

  • @stripedhyenuh - silly prick commentator was probably 3 when they performed and has just enough brains to get himself a degree in media studies and fuck lucky enough to have a daddy who has friends at the BBC.

  • @milander007 The commentator is Steve wright from Radio 1 now on radio 2, he's 50. He'sstill an idiot now.

  • I have always liked Siouxsie. She has such a great voice. I had an accident and was in the hospital in a coma ,had radio and someone brought a siouxsie tape, and I was shaking my head to the beat. Love Siouxsie.

  • Beautiful song. Outstanding in every respect-melody, vocal, lyrics, production, musicianship..

  • yes robert smith used to play with them back in teh day!

  • Wow Siouxsie is like a mythical being, and is that Robert Smith on keys?

  • I really like the fact that this band always experimented with their music and came up with new things. I didn't like them at first, but something about them still intrigued me, and I gave their music a chance until it grew on me. Something for which I'm now grateful for. They opened me up to other artists who make "strange" and "unusual" music.

  • which swimming styles if done regularly will make you grow taller?

  • i must have been too drunk, i dont remember watching this video 6 days ago. wait..i'm drunk now..nm

  • wtf are some o u tards on about, can't u just comment on the song without gettin sidetracked by bullsh*t

  • @pmc40 you're doing the very thing you're bitching about though dipshit lol. stfu.

  • i so love siouxsie's voice

  • truly magical times!

  • Bob de Rooy you mean

  • bob smith on the keyboard there

  • See Robert Smith at 1:30. He transforned this album into something beyond the group's previous releases.

  • Before I croak..i have to see two bands(as well as paul mcartney), and they are "TOOL", and "SIOUXSIE". I'd die a happy man.

  • I had never heard this beautiful song on commercial radio. in the US. Perhaps it's too morbid of the subject for the "filler".

  • One of my favorite S&TB songs !! Thanks Jef for posting this TV show version with HQ sound !!

  • i discover at that ancient time (1984) this band with that magical album "hyaena" one of their best albums ! Siouxsie have an amazing voice...with..power and sensuality. for me she have 5 great lps : "hyaena" (1984), "tinderbox"(1986), "peep show" (1988), "superstition" (1991) and the great live album "nocturne" from (1983) with Robert smith in the band............

  • amazing sound! amazing singer! it reminds me when i was 20yrs.........a strange and in the mean time fantastic period. The Berlin wall, the dualism btwn usa and urss... fear of nuke ( du remember the film the day after?) the Tacher in UK ....sorry Im talking like an old man but siuxie represents a period were the singers re really able to sing and the session man were really music player ( have you noted bob smith ?). May be i was young , may be Siuxie is outstending but ......WHO IS GAGA ????

  • Are people REALLY comparing Siouxsie to Gaga ? That's like comparing a 5 lb Lobster tail drenched in butter to a McDonald's Filet 'O Fish.

  • @kydonia LOL Touché ! Gaga is a product, Siouxsie & the Banshees is a group of genuine Artists, with an A capital in all aspects of their musical creativity, outfit and scenaries tastes, image and influence along so many years

  • @kydonia i like a few gaga songs to be honest..but she's not even in the same league as Siouxsie Sioux...siouxsie is a goddess...gaga is pure pseudo-aesthetics 101.

  • @kydonia WELL SAID!

  • @kydonia FUCK YOU U STUPID MOTHER FUCKER U CANT COMPARE THEM THEY ARE TWO DIF TYPES OF FUCKING MUSIC YOUR SO FUCKING STUPID U MUST BE SOME OLD FUCKING GUY FROM THE 50S

  • Beautiful, ugly, attractive and scary at the same time...

But, overall a kind of hot.

    Special lady.

  • @Jer0mmel she's ugly? lol her face is fucking gorgeous, and her idiosyncrasies make her even more hot-like that slight lower lip bend when she occasionally hits long notes, and that slight Strabismus(cross-eyed) look..i'd rather date siouxsie than a supermodel, just for the pure genuine aesthetic/artistic value, let alone her looks. P E A C E.

  • she were a cracking lass, still is!

  • This song still gives me chills.

  • British originality!

  • looks like curt smith on the synth with shades on.

  • this was the track that all the girls hated and at the time i loved it just to annoy them, but hearing it now, well before its time

  • Until I found out seemingly twee indie folkstress Rozi Plain was actually a rock goddess with her full band, Siouxsie was my favourite female singer, along with Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's.

Siouxsie & the Banshees at their best were up there with God's like Echo & the Bunnymen or The Chameleons UK.

  • Lady Gaga has NOTHING on Siouxise!

Siouxsie's a sexual, poetic Goddess, and Lady Gaga's just provactively dressed clown!

  • @Jakegothicsnake Siouxsie has a crareer spanning 34 years. Gaga will be forgotten in a couple of years just like Britney Spears.

  • @lewisner Indeed.

  • @Jakegothicsnake if you hate lady gaga so much then why mention her on this video?

  • @DeMystified2012 I was in a "I hate Lady Gaga" mod and I needed to vent a little. If you want, I'll delete my comment.

  • @Jakegothicsnake na whatever i dont really care

  • @Jakegothicsnake WOW ANOTHER OLD FUCKING WANKER WHO KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT TALENT

  • ALL YOU LADY GAGA HATERS CAN BURN IN FUCKING HELL WITH YOUR FUCKING SIOUXSIE YOU THINK IS SO FUCKING TALENTED MORE THAN ANYONE IN THE FUCKIN WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FUCK U ALL

  • @leesaulsify ermm well like it or not siouxsie was out before lady gaga ...lady gaga is a siouxsie and madonna wannabe so fuck off troll

  • AND STOP COMPARING LADY GAGA TO EVERY FUCKING THING ALREADY JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!! YOU ALL FUCKIN JELOUSE OF HER OR SOMETHING?????????????????

  • @leesaulsify Now listen here you. Did it ever occur to you that reason why some people don't care for or don't like Lady Gaga at all is because she's given FAR too mcuh press?? That's she's talked about nearly EVER single blody day?? And another thing, if you love Lady Gaga so much, why are you even watching this video? You a troll or something???

  • @Jakegothicsnake I WAS'N

T FUCKING WATCHING IT MY FUCKING BOY FRIEND WAS WATCHING IT AND HE SAID SOMEONE ALWAYS HAS TO SAY OR COMPARE SOEMTHING TO LADY GAGA AND I SAID WHAT AND HE READ ME YOUR COMMENT AND I GOT MAD SO FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • a goddess hardly more like a druggy pale white BITCH. How does it feel to diss soemone you like!? So shut the fuck up about gaga.

  • @leesaulsify My fucking god just cause something is new doesn't mean it's fucking better. Why the fuck are you talking shit?some people don't fucking like Lady Gaga get the fuck over it. This is a fucking goth/punk band that paved the way for people like lady gaga.

  • @SuperPolytheist stfu you dimestore MONOeMONO quimbubble or i'll pimpslap ewe to the other side of the cosmos..lol **PWNED** rofl<-----

  • @THEATHElSTPARADlGM You can shut it as well, you bloody idiot. If I see you posting here again without my permission, I'll break every bone in your worthless body, and dislocate every joint. Then, and only when I'm satisfied that you've experienced enough pain, I'll kill you.

    EE - I have spoken.

  • 1:32 OMG LOOK! Robert Smith! XD

  • man coming of age in the 80's must have been magical.

  • She's lip-synching here...

  • @Craigbe Everyone lip-synched on TOTP

  • Love Siouxsie!!!!! And look Robert Smith on keyboards!!!! Very awesome

  • Thank you for posting this vid!

  • Siouxsie is so beautiful.

It blows me away to see her sing so passionately.

  • Nobody noticed Robert Smith on keyboards, that hairy bloke from The Cure. Yeah, that one that wrote this song and then left when he was told the song was written by Sou and the Banshee's. If u doubt me listen to the Piano on "The Top" Album by The Cure, was realeased before whatever Boohiss album this was from

  • Comment removed

  • @BunnymanUK It is no secret that he helped write some of the songs on the Banshees "Hyaena" album, "The top" was released at the same time, give or take a week. Robert Smiths "tenure" with the Banshees was never meant to be permanent, he didn't "leave" because of a dispute over song writing credits, he simply wanted to concentrate on The Cure.

  • @BunnymanUK Robert Smith declared in 2003 : "I was blown away by how powerful I felt playing that kind of music. It was so different to what we were doing with The Cure. Before that, I'd wanted us to be like The Buzzcocks or Elvis Costello, the punk Beatles. Being a Banshee really changed my attitude to what I was doing."

  • Love it!!!

  • I'm totally in love with this wonderful woman. And her music, obviously:)

  • @Prizak1 Hehehehe, Me too...

  • gorgeous woman, great character, unique!

  • voting office only open on freaky fridays and every sunday...

  • @boabaobab Why don't you get a good shag, you twat? Are you living in the 21st century or in the 13th?? Are you a religious fanatic? Fuck you, arsehole. And fuck religion, it's SHIT.

  • Fuck who cares adultry is when a woman is married to her husband and has sex with someone else. If she is not married it is fornication..even then fuck Christanity views!! if we all di that most of us are going to HELLL!!! oh shit so am I I have had a few girlfiends and had sex many many many times with birth control ..I dont give a fuck, as long as your senceable about sex, I dont care if someone has gay sex who gives a fuck as longas its senceable!

  • @hobbit151 sensible, not senceable =)

  • yes that is Rob and this is a fantastic album Hyena!

  • Deep love for Siouxsie at the moment. This is the first time I have heard this song but I just keep hitting replay. I love the way she moves in this video, I think she is beautiful to look at as well, why isnt there anything this good now. Lady Ga Ga my arse. Big love to her and the band and isnt that Robert Smith on keyboards?

  • @Robskit6 right on. i admit this is one of my all-time favorite songs..chick singing or not. who cares. she's the shit.

  • She is soo Sexy..still!! RRRROOOWRRRR~!

  • sounds a bit `kate bush`!

  • This live presentation is better than the official vid, also the playback in rolling backside of the leadsinger... ^^

  • Awesome video!I

I love her strange and beautifull face. Big eyes, and a little mouth.

    She is so sofisticated (appearence),

Her voice and lyrics where fantastic too!

  • @21love4ever ...every band that stars on topofthepops lip sinks.

  • @21love4ever

It was the policy of Top of The Pops to have the acts lip sync*.

    Lrn2musik

  • Robert Smith once stated that until he heard the Banshees he just wanted to be in a band that sounded like Buzzcocks. They were his biggest influence and working with them a huge privilege.

  • Where is the film clip version, when she is wearing that white top!!!! and staring down the camera, had it taped off rage 20 years ago!!!I went out and got one made just llike it lol!!! Great song, beautiful voice... Love arabian nights and looking glass(??) too!!!

  • Beautiful!

    I love this song

    Siouxsie is amazing

    Robert looks very serious

  • Comment removed

  • Don't u think the intro of this song sounds like the beginning of "6 different ways" by the Cure.??

  • exactly! i thought the same when i first heard it. i like both songs:)

  • Siouxsie Sioux is flawless and devine!

Swimming Horses single is still one of my favourites!

BTW where did you get this video?

I love to have a copy of it!

OMG now my kids are getting into Siouxsie!

They think their old man is pretty kewl!

They right! I am kewl! HE HE!

  • what there to explain when a voice like that runs over you like sweet water, yum:-)

  • Does everyone on this show lip-sync? If so do the musicians fake playing?

  • @peytonazak Yes, back then they used to all mime. Shame isn't it. The musicians rarely had any choice, unless they were maybe Madonna or Paul McCartney, who could set their own rules.

  • Really? That's horrible. You can't blame someone of they got bored. Why did some people get to set their own rules while others didn't?

  • This song has to do with women in the Islamic world and men carring babies? Huh? I don't get it. CAn someone please explain it?

  • @peytonazak ...the song is about male roles and the swimming horses carrying young are male sea horses..hence Swimming horses..

  • @manhandle42 this song is about a chick who was apparently pregnant and the town scorned her and murdered her, thrown her kid down a well. (from what i've heard, anyway). peace.

  • @peytonazak a chick getting pregnant and the community scorning her..killing the baby, thrown down a well..for a face burnt to helllllllllllllll..feel the cruel stonneessssssss..breaking her bonneeessssss

  • For what it is worth, I rate this in my top ten songs of all time. That probably means 3/fifths of f$#k-all to anyone, but there you go.

  • Same here, it IS a brilliant song =)

  • This song is so beautifull, and again shows the variety of sounds they good play without losing the "banshee touch".

  • Great again! Such a long time ago. c' mon dj 's what are you waiting for ?

  • Is everything lip synced on Top of the Pops? This sounds exactly like the recording and other stuff I've seen from TOTP seems that way as well.. just curious.

  • It's no surprise Robert Smith is a part of my favorite Siouxsie phase..They really got more atmospheric with Hyaena.

  • Yes, Robert is on Keyboards, when his relation whit tha' Banshees started to became difficult

  • is that robert smith on keyboards?

  • siouxsie.......... :( this is playback man. oh well she sings for real everywhere else so its ok

  • is she high?

  • Oh so good.

  • Omgrrhugeijndfmefsx

    shes my freaking idol

  • chlothes!

  • wow, i can really hear now that tori amos gets inspiration from siouxsie. bigtime.

  • Love Budgie's drumming on this track

  • Classic record, that never really got the credit it deserved.

  • brilliance, words wont do this song justice

  • How long before the twats at WMG disable the sound to this aswell...

  • It's fine, this is BBC property.

  • This is probably my all-time favorite song by them. It's overlooked and fucking brilliant. What the HELL DOES IT MEAN. I don't even care, though. I just keep listening to it, and have been for, like the past 25 fucking years.

  • My fucking sentiments exactly! Tho I didn't hear it til 96...

  • @blackbranches islamic assholes torturing females for thinking they've cheated and the chick was presumably pregnant but she wasn't..they jacked her anyway, scorned her "pushed down a well..for a face burnt to hell...feel the cruel stonneesssssssssss..breakikng her bonesssssssssss'' what a FUCKING great song. this is one of my all-time favorite songs, period. hardly anything close. maybe a tool song "parabola", or 'right in two' but shit, this song hits deep. peace.

  • before he became a fat-lump?

  • Dude, cut the man some slack!

The man is 50, and yep he is a bit rounder around the middle than 10 years ago.

But that isn't what is important here!

His voice is still as sublime as it was 20 years ago!

Whereas, most performers voices have lost their clarity...Robert has been fortunate to NOT have lost his.

His is still making awesome music and still able to perform as he did 20 years ago.

Body weight can always be lost...voices can never be regained once they start to fade.

  • i feel that siouxsie siouxe and bjork may be spiritually related...

  • @youcandance12345 b'jork is another hottie i'd love to trap on an island. 'hunter' and 'emergency' are great tunes.

  • @TheAtheistParadigm do you mean 'Joga'? the lyrics go "state of emergency" but the song is called Joga

  • @snowball1988 let me check...brb..lol...i actually have the casette...i think you're right..i think i posted one of the lines WITHING "joga' 2nd song, first side. good job bro/sis. those two off of 'homogenic' were pretty decent. I l iked the old 'hunter' video, though, with the bear on it. but the new version she freakin looks hotter with that bald head for some reason lmao.

  • @TheAtheistParadigm "but the new version she freakin looks hotter with that bald head for some reason lmao."

I now what reason, and so do you. Shut it or die. Now get that bare crown slapped one THOUSAND times. I want it BLEEDING. Should you fail to obey me, I'll tear your limbs off and leave you for the foxes in my garden.

    Now GET SLAPPING.

    EE - I have spoken.

  • No, I don't think it should be like that. And she isn't separating women and men here for nothing; it's important in order to the issue to come across. If you think of this song wider than being a commentary on the stone-throwing tradition, it could be about insincerety and disguising one's cruelty towards another person. Those themes haven't got anything to do with gender.

  • neptune.

the god neptune gives birth to swimming

    horses.

  • This is such an amazing song.

  • i've just watched this three times!!! i love you Siouxsie Sioux in an unconditional way!

  • such a passionate singer, what a woman!

  • She was Robert Smith before Robert Smith was cool.

  • rare video with siouxsie and robert smith on piano

  • Shame it is a playback. but nevertheless: a mesmeric beautifull song. It is about that males should carry the unborn child and take in all the responsability that goes along with it. Seahorses ("swimming horses") do it different. In their species, the male carries the unborn ones. Food for thought....???

  • Male seahorses should do that, because that's what they do.

She's saying that human males "should" also do it? Why? That makes no damn sense.

  • I think it's about the cultures in which the male family members take care of their female siblings, while at the same time girls can get into serious trouble because of shame issues etc. It criticizes double standards?

  • I guess. Is it more gender-feminist bitching?

  • No way. The matter is for real and the lyrics just don't waste time apologizing.
