  • maybe, I was that 'dopey' kid ...

  • check out the dopey kid behind Tony!

  • @piranhavitana To describe the kid as 'dopey' is a bit harsh; back in 1973/74 virtually all fashion-conscious young lads of his age dressed like that.

  • The episode you are refering to is the 31/1/74. I do have that episode but the D.J links are removed. The episode was wiped by the BBC so the only chance of you getting a copy is from a private collector. Sorry I can't be more help.

  • Hello I see you have quite a few videos of TOTP 1973/4 and I wondered if you had one I appeared in. I was standing next to Dave Lee Travis when he was introducing, I think, Ronnie Lane singing "How Come?" which was released in late 1973 and I think that's when I was there. I was wearing a long purple dress and I'd love to be able to find it and show it to my children (now that I'm 58!)

  • The Pop Star at No.1 Had such an amazing stage prescence. What a Sad Waste of Rock and Roll Talent.

  • @coolyjojo Glitter was - and is - a horrible man, but he did make a few decent singles between 1972 and '75.

That said, he was nowhere near as talented or charismatic as the late, great Marc Bolan of T. Rex - whose reign as Britain's biggest pop star began (and finished) a couple of years before Glitter's.

  • the good old days when families all sat around the telly 2 watch top of the pops all gone now

  • The wedding being referred to is Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips. I remember watching that 'in colour' around someone else's house as we only had a b&w TV at the time! btw that's Pete Shelly singing with Alvin miming.

  • Ah,back when girls were slim, fresh faced with natural hair colours.

  • Listen to all you blokes! You lot ain't much better these days with your shaved heads and hardware stuck in your faces lol

  • Yep women wore for the main dresses...who wears the trousers in the relationship?

  • #25, Wink Martindale??? The American game show host???

  • Ah ... 1973! The days when men were men, and birds were birds.

Today's generation of 'with it' young women, with their tattoos and body piercings, may be 'harder' in some respects than their predecessors in the 1970's ...... but that certainly doesn't mean that they are more feminine or more attractive than the girls of that era.

I noticed that that episode of T.O.T.P. (from 15. 11. 73) was presented by Tony Blackburn. He was certainly a very good-looking, handsome man in those days.

  • great mutton chops on alvin

  • 2:14

  • "c'mon let's go t' me flat" - quality.

  • WHAT GREAT TIMES THEY WERE MUSIC TODAY CANT COMPETE WITH THE 70S

  • in the opening titles...........sex, drugs and a dartboard.

  • This was broadcast 4 days after my 8th birthday and I vaguely recall watching it...jesus where have the years gone?

  • title song for Top of the pops was a part of "whole lot of love" by Led Zepplin

  • This is like the same shit I hear on the top forty. Nothing has changed.

  • PEADO GARY GUTTER IS GETTING TOO MUCH HYPE!!!

  • Come on lets go to my flat lol!!

  • bing back top of the pops or repeat them

  • @nigel2247 TOP OF THE POPS WAS ON CABLE TV NOT TO LONG BK DUNNO IF ITS STILL ON THO

  • It beggars belief that a lot of guys in the seventies thought the Peter Sutcliff look was cool.

  • @MrBravo1999 No-one had heard of Peter Sutcliffe in the 70's, seeing as his crimes didn't come to light until the early part of the 80's.

  • great ranking!!!! :D

  • Alvin Stardust was bizarre, he's like elvis meets dr phibes, good tune tho'.........

  • A pedophile at #1...great!

  • Alvin Stardust looking all mean and moody. Haha, his smile almost cracks a couple of times. Good memories.

  • what the fuck is a 'coo cha coo'?

  • this made the charts in february 1974

  • 1:32 + 1:42 = 13

    18 Electric Light Orchestra

    13 Max Bywhat?

    18+13 = 31

Hovering just outside the top 30.

    Hellaby. By Hell.

    Junction 1 of the M18.

    M(13) + 18 = LOU REED.

  • I love this clip of My Coo Ca Choo, it cracks me up everytime I watch it especially when the camera focuses on the guitarist, he looks like a science teacher. I'm sure his day job back then was presenting on the Open University.

  • omg I was 12 in 73 ;) Those were the proper Top of the pops days :)!!

  • My God, I was ten on the 15th Nov 1973!

  • Tony Blackburn looks about 12 here...also I wonder why the blooming cameraman zooms to the bass player during the guitar solo - they were always doing that in those days!

  • Those where the days gone by

  • Whatever he turned out to be now, the glitter band sound was as much part of the 70s glam rock era. Im disgusted by his later years but I wont be two faced in admitting back in the 70s I loved the gliiter sound in among The Sweet,Mud, Suzi Quatro etc etc. The whole group shouldnt be judged on what he has done.

  • @gingerladyaubern what an era the 70's were,i am still trapped in them, sooo many great bands not like the crap that is going out now

  • Lovely eyes on 1:23...

  • after seeing this, no wonder the sex pistols happened.

  • My Coo Ca Choo was the song that really introduced me to Alvin's music. Lovely to see the beautiful Lynsey De Paul in the run down loooooooooooooooove you.

  • Back in the day mr stardust had his face on the side of a house in my town was there for years till thay pulled the lot down

  • lynsey, suzi, elton, gilbert, osmonds, alvin, ringo - they were all in the top 20 that week werent they?!

  • This is how I remember Top of the Pops when I was 6 years old! It's quite disturbing that Gary Glitter was at No1, he would have fancied me in those days as a 6 year old! Wouldn't fancy me now as a 41 year old! How strange is life.

  • Gary CONVICTED PAEDOPHILE Glitter No. 1?

    SICKENING.

  • The singer known then as Gary Glitter was NOT a convicted peado back in the 70s... surely you must know that he's only been found out these last few years?

  • Yeh.. and you're a fuckin maniac.. Probably should be arrested yourself.

For your information, dickhead.. Glitter's crime was possession of paedophile photos on his PC, and this only came to light when he took it to PC World in Bristol for repair in 2003 and told the staff not to look at what he had on his hard drive! So get yer info right, TWAT!

  • wish they said what the actual songs were

  • Wink Martindale?

    Really?!?

...Wink? *rubs eyes and replays video*. Wow. I just...wow.

  • Love the little subliminal's right at the start.

    lol

  • When girls looked like girls, before piercings and tattoos!!!

  • @evanswho I agree, I am female and I think too many girls these days have piercings and tattoos and they've really spoilt themselves. I'm 42, maybe I'm being old-fashioned, but I wouldn't want to mark my body in that way.

  • When girls looked like girls, and when david bowie looked like a lady : )

  • @evanswho so true

  • @evanswho and Gary Glitter was a top likeable popstar.

  • @evanswho, YEAH!

  • @evanswho, I don't have piercings or tattooes. I don't think I'd like to go out with you though.

  • @katymagnets That's a stroke of fortune for him.

  • @evanswho Ya! Why do they think looking like circus freaks is sexy?

  • @evanswho Well said, sir! Back in those halcyon days of 1973 - and indeed for a considerable number of years after that - birds were not interested in looking 'hard'; they just wanted to look gorgeous. As a middle-aged man (in my mid-40's), i look back at the 1970's nostalgically. Not everything was better in those days, but pop and rock music certainly was ...... and another positive aspect of the 1970's (in my own personal opinion) was that MEN WERE MEN ...... AND BIRDS WERE BIRDS !!

  • Few years back there was a murrell of Alvin star dusts face on the side of a house in the town were i live

  • Is it me or are all the lovly young girls at the start, look just so much sexyer than whats walking around today.

  • dead right- girls look like shite now compared to then- no femininity now

  • the golden days;i saw it all

  • Great Stuf!

Music has totally gone down the pan since then.

  • I remember that wedding!!! We got a day off school!!!

Did not do them any good though - they still got divorced a few years later!!

  • Is this Stardust guy Morrissey's father?

  • No Alvins son is a DJ Called Adam F

Alvin stardusts real name is shane Fenton. Hence his son being called Adam F

  • Its great how everyone looked 40ish....but where really in their 20's.....i was 8 back then, dont remember it being in colour though....lol

  • One of the things I miss about the 70s (and not much else , mind you) is that you could have Perry Como and David Bowie in the same countdown.

  • An amazing title sequence for the time. I guess the video effects on the numbers were done purely by fiddling with the stability of the video signal? Also bear in mind that all captions in those days were done with rubdown lettering on pieces of blue card.

In all, a classic 1970's episode with the colour separation overlay etc. Plus added weirdness with the scary Gary Glitter image.

  • With that lot as your chart selection no wonder punk came a calling a couple of years later!

  • the moment gary glitter's face appeared i nearly shit myself the music isn't half as bad as the rap and RnB shit that people r forced to suffer 2 day

  • well said buddy!

  • Have you got the rundown for the surviving 1969 episode with Stewart Henry's intro? If so please upload it.

  • Yes I would love to see a Stuart Henry clip. I have a few Radio 1 clips but no video. I used to love his Radio 1 shows.

  • Thanks n all, but I want that girl as she was in 1973, not as she looks now! Damn, what a cutie! Better than any girl I`ve seen recently.

Ergo, I need a time machine lads! Gotta tap me some of that 1973 a$s :-)

  • rentaghost76

The girl is from Cape Town in South Africa, if you are still looking for her you can contact any South African Embassy who will give you the 'Where are they now' site address......if you place a request, and describe the event, there is a good chance you could trace her. Someone was looking for me after 40 years, and found me.

    Best of luck

  • I'm in love with the girl in the audience the host talks to at 2:35! I bet she's either dead or an old bag now though, sigh.... I always fall in love with people I can't have :-(

  • don't worry love will come soon, be patient and your dreams will come true.

  • She'd probably now be in her mid-fifties.

  • Photograph by Ringo Starr is the track playing at the start of this video :)

  • Was it Gary Glitter at Number 1?

  • Yes, with "I Love, You Love, Me Love", which stayed there until Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody" knocked it off just before Christmas.

  • ...and typical TOTP camera work on the Alvin S number - homing in on the gormless bass player during the guitar solo.

  • Great times? Alvin Stardust? May the good Lord preserve us.

  • Music is the CCS version - the TOTP theme for years; I think theuy even brought it back much later in the show's life. I'm not sure Zeppelin were ever on it - maybe in the old Album Slot.

  • Jeez what terrible production values! I love the chart countdown - no song titles, perhaps they assumed everyone knew every song name, and maybe in those days, they did.

  • of course we did

  • I was kid then, i recall a rumour that he had a false hand !!

  • can u imagine saying "lay down & groove on the mat" to your lass now, she'd just leave ye

  • There are more pretty girls in this short video than I've seen in England on my 5 trips. WTF happened?

  • My coo ca choo was one of the first singles I ever bought. I remember my mom laughing that Alvin Stardust wore a ring outside his gloves.

  • dam i love that intro ,got to get that from somewhere, well the is one way,lol

  • magical days, i miss them

  • so do i - but imagine a chart with bowie, dylan and macca - with gary glitter (wtf?) at number one!! what the hell was going on?

  • Thanks for posting! Alvin Rocks!!! I was 7yrs old and he was MY coo ca choo lololololol!

  • thanks

  • can you tell me the name of the song that's used in the coutdown please

  • It was Ringo Starr - Photograph

  • Its a version of Led Zeppelin's "Whole lotta love"

  • hey Alvin - it's a bit like Spirit In The Sky isn't it?

  • amazing special effects

  • What a wonderful chart! If only we could put glitter in our hair and be magically transported back to 73..TOTPS was such a jambaree! I lived for it every Thursday night.I remember being so exited about Gary Glitter being on. He always did something special. I loved Slade and Sweet too. Everyone at school the next day talked about who wore what [ie-Dave Hill of Slade!!!] it was must see tv. Oh, the good old bad days- bring back pop stars!

  • Ohmygawd this is brilliant. Thanks to evanswho for posting.

Does anyone think Morrissey was influenced by Alvin Stardust...

  • Yeah can really see Morrissey sing "My cooch a choo, heaven knows I'm miserable now"

  • The Quo at number 20 that would have been Caroline.

  • Spot on. On Vertigo 6059 085. Made #5 a few weeks earlier. Many Quo fans were amazed that it took until Jan 75 for their 'Down Down' track to make their only number 1.

  • Doesn't this remind you (Alvin Stardust) of Spirit in the Sky, just slightly?

  • The beginning sounds to me like Led Zepplin's Whole Lotta Love.

  • It is the CCS (Alexis Korner) version.

  • It's the Johnny Pearson Orchestra version. The CCS one was more rocky

  • max bygraves and perry commo 13 and 12..i neva saw tht one comming.wow!

  • what a chart - full of the names of the day. wish more episodes from this time were available

  • Plant a tree in 73.

  • plant some more in 74!!

    I remember.

  • Fuckinell, Alvin 'Sawdust' - now i feel OLD :(

  • The Carpenters - #6!

Thank you so much! I never thought TOTP recognized The Carpenters (I've never seen any full episodes).

  • Hey 15/11/73 this is my brothers birthday

  • oh i found out wowzers!! i knew it was ringo starr it sounds like him but then it doesnt at the same time... great song ringo!!

  • Wats the song playin during the count down?

  • Ringo Starr's "Photograph"

  • Thanks lol i actually figured that out the very same day i ask the question, a little research.. thanks!

  • tamesidecitizen.blogspot

  • gary glitter is a fucking nonce lets not foret

  • Great to see Lynsey De Paul and Suzi Quatro in the chart countdown. Were they featured in this episode?

  • Perry Como and Max Bygraves :-D

Why did Alvin Stardust always those gloves? Weird.

  • It perfected his untouchable image!

  • Comment removed

  • Cool Cat you know where its at, Come on lets go to my flat... makes me laugh out loud every time! I love Alvin Stardust though, great memories. This is just how I remember Top of The Pops back in the early 70s when I was about 6 years old with those dodgy camera effects, music today is SO dull. BTW, the wedding they are referring to is Princess Anne's wedding which occurred the day before, (14/11/73).

  • Excellent & what a great line up of Artists

in the countdown happy xamas to all thanks.

  • Super stuff! Any more early Alvin?

  • Great quality video. Love the countdown. Alvin Stardust's 'My Coo Ca Choo'... simply fantastic.

  • I was 14 years old when this edition of TOTP was broadcast. Being a big Gary Glitter fan, I was thrilled when I Love You Love Me Love entered the singles chart at number one, a rare event at that time! Thanks for putting it on YouTube.

  • U still a gary glitter fan?

  • In the 70s, I was a huge fan of Gary Glitter, but now I feel very disappointed with him and condemn strongly his appalling behaviour.

  • Fantastic, remember it like yesterday, gosh where do the years go.Thanks for the memories.

  • I'd forgotten just how popular the Osmonds were back then!! (shudder)

  • AWESOME my friend, well done!! Have you any clips from the 11/10/73 show hosted by Kenny Everett?

  • Afraid not, but am trying to get hold of a copy.

  • Absolutely mesmerising performance by Alvin, I never forgot, This is absolute best video for sound evanswho, some Coo Ca Choo vids don't have it, missing some quality. But your;s does justice to Alvin and to my memory, thank you
