When Russia lost air superiority in the early months of the German invasion1941 they realised how vulnerable their navy was and withdrew their ships to Kronstadt under protection of torpedo nets and antiarcraft defenses.Japan should have done the same until they retrained another crop of experienced carrier pilots and a covering force of antisubmarine units.
@IanHunedoara8 Russia retreated from the German navy into restricted waters.USN cann't be compared to the small German fleet.Japan as a island economie had to mantain her sealanes, couldn't retreat and still import goods
Plan A-Go was ill conceived with unrealistic assumptions and expectations. The Navy having lost its untrained pilots in the Marianas battle decided to gamble with their empty carriers to make the Yanks attack one force when expected.
this is great, beautiful ijn, some of the handsomest vessels to serve their country.Yamato being bitch slapped by one small destroyer, kinda tough on greatest ship afloat
Japanese forces should have been consolidated into one strong force rather than getting divided into 3 or 4 different forces (Kurita Group, Ozawa Group, Nishi Group, etc.).
the problem with that was that the other allied ships in the area would have been closer, meaning that both sides would have likely lost a whole lot of ships, but leaving japan in a far worse state as the allies had far more ships in reserve, and an ability to replenish them faster than japan could. The idea of the battle was to defeate the land forces, they just underestimated what a determined crew could do with such small ships.
@18seki - I respectfully disagree. The air arm of the IJN was destroyed in the Battle of the Philippine Sea (The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot) and Ozawa's carriers were no longer a threat to the Americans. Stripped of their air wings, they were essentially expendable. Their use in drawing away Halsey's carrier forces was brilliant. The overwhelming superiority of the Third Fleet's fast carriers would've decimated a combined Japanese fleet.

@bv141a It was Yank submarines, not planes that was the bane of Japanese shipping- both commercial and military.

@IanHunedoara8 American submarines did to Japan what German subs tried and failed to do to England

This is a surprise? Most of the Jananese plans were like that throughout the entire war.
It's ironic the the Americans of Taffy 3 show more of the "warrior spirit" the the IJN did at this battle.

@irishsquid1962
Correct. After the "Turkey Shoot" IJN naval air was pretty much a none factor. The IJN carriers were a waste of metal after that as well.
