@trailljunkie You can clearly see the two "horns" on the way up (pause if in doubt). Of course, Mantas and Mobulas are also part of the eagle ray family in any case. But this is a Mobula, as the poster says. And jumping is typical of Mobulas.
there body will evolve and become more circular and will damatically increase in size and turn into what we now know as a flying saucer or ufo ship. 8)
wow im a guy but.. thats probably the cutest things ive ever seen in my life, i wish i could have it as a pet, but then id ruin his life, imagine if you were someones pet, that would suck balls.. but anyways, that manta ray pwns everything in this world.. too cute..
mate that is not a manta ray that is a eagle ray. eagle rays jump out of the water thats why they are called eagle ray's. manta rays weigh like 500kg thats like asking a fat chick to jump 5 ft in the air :)
GO STINGY/MANTY!!!! FLAP!!!! FLAP!!!! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!!!! BELIEVE IN YOUR HEART AND IN THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE SO THAT THEY... ah, what the heck. Just flap. ^^
WOW!!!That's amazing! And I saw it in the comfort of my own home without paying thousands of dollars for a ticket and spending days preparing for this sight.THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAVING MY TIME AND MONEY.
I actually heard that it does this also to relieve itching caused by some lice or other thing like that, although it is not known for sure why it does that.
it's a type of stingray, but a different type. This type of ray is called a manta ray. It's different becos it doesn't sting. It's jumping out of the water cos its dos that when it thinks that danger is approaching.
Stingrays are a family of rays, and manta rays are a genus within a separate family (eagle rays). The ray in this video may be a mobula. They have the same look as mantas but are much smaller.

4 real. But it was really a freak accident. An innocent jump like that from the ray and the unfortunate lady at the front of a boat going bout 25m or km not sure an hr. That would hit pretty hard.
it isa mobulas. but in San Agustinillo, in fact the entire coast of oaxaca, they call ALL rays as mantas.. MAnta blanca, Manta Pinto ( eagle) Manta Cafe, ( brown stingrays) and Manta Grande, for the real thing...
@fishfilmmaker "Manta" can be a generic term for any mobulid of unknown species - in the manta/devil ray subfamily. You can call the "real manta" (Manta birotris) devil ray too, that's an equally valid name for that species as well. Those names are somewhat synonymous.
It is Similar to the term "dog".
Generic, non specific name: "dog" = A member of the dog family, Canidae
Specific species: Canis familiaris, "domestic dog", or just "dog".
i have seen them about 18 feet wide... i hooked one 11 feet across while tapinga fly fishing show with BOB IZUMI.. the footgae never aired and it stripped me of 400 yads of line in 9 or 10 seconds
these little mantas travel in huge schoold up to 50000 at a time... if it is aisnt a manta but some other kind theni stand corrected, but we have have all kinds, eagles, pintos, cafe, brown, rtingrays and mantas.... around us they call all the rays "mantras" whichis incorrect
Its not a Manta, its a Devil, or Mobula Ray which is a lot smaller. Mantas do also jump sometimes tho. They do it we believe to dislodge parasites, or also when escaping predetors such as sharks. Nice video.
Manta ray has got few of its evil names from jumping on fishing boats and killing fishermen a century or 2 ago. I heard they do it to scare their enemies, maybe they try to protect their kids etc. Anyway that manta looks pretty small one. Are you sure it wasn't any other ray? The one I saw jumping in front of Norfolk, VA about 50 meters away from our boat was at least 15ft feet wide. According to wikipedia they can grow as wide as 25ft. Anyway, nice shot, my friend.
That's too cool. But it almost hurts when you hear them land. I wonder why they fly out of the water like that. I guess for fun. they don't need to come up for water like Dolphins would. Weird and cool stuff.
Weeeeeeee I can fly!!!!
