  • Thank you ! I shoot a japanese long bow and I make my arrows with bamboo and feathers from a art and craft store. My problem was trimming down the spine of the feather i tried flattening it with pliers and sanding it down with sand paper but your spit stick sandwich feather knife technique works great.I have enjoyed seeing your survival training and hunting on YouTube and in Dual survival on TV. Maybe one day someone mite see some of my videos and want to make a TV show with us. Thanks Dave.

  • TAKE A COMON BOX CUTER BLADE OR STANLEY BLADE IN A PAIR O GRIPS SNAP IT UNDERFOOT WITH THE GRIPS RESULT WILL BE X2 MEAN QIUK BROAD HEADS .

  • MY ARROWS OWE THEIR TARGET REPEAT ...........

  • watching you cut with your knife blade on the rock made me cringe...

    great video!

  • Can't you you use both pieces of the feather for fletching? Or is it only one side you can use?

  • @germanninja101 you can use both sides just not on the same arrow because the feathers are turning in two different directions

  • Your video is excellant..and very informative...I appreciate the information..My grandson and i are useing it for a project together. Thanks again..

  • I realise this is an arrow making video, but if you save that other half of the feather you could use parts of it to tie fishing flies. Excellent video series. Thank you for making this

  • HEy didn't I see you on Discovery channel not too long ago?? Haha...what's up big Dave...

  • crush the vein, then it splits easily

  • Dave what , what is ur last name?

  • do not trim the feather to make it thiner, only to make it flat . if it is too thin it will give you problems

  • i am in the canadian north.... basically all i got is aspin, fur, pine, and verry few birch; what is the best out of these for making bows ( ive tried two from aspin but there is so many flaws in the wood that they always seem to break)

  • Show Us How To Make A Primitive Hunting Bow!

  • Show Us How To Make A Good Bow!

  • @REALJAMEZVIDEOS That IS Dave Canterbury.

  • very cool! thanks...this should come in handy after politicians are done with our country.

  • note to rangerchallange bravo. the reason why he threw away 1/2 of the feather is because if the used the other half it would not fly true. all 3 of the feathers he used, he gathered from the same side and it will fly true. if you mix the sides it will interfere with the flight of the arrow. so he must use 3 tops or 3 bottoms but all 3 must be from the same side of the feather.

  • I been watching discovery and travel channel for the last two years or so exclusively. I LOVE Dual survival and just got turned on to Dave's work. Great vids Dave, I am currently assembling all my gear for self-reliance too. Thanks for teaching.

  • Good arrow Dave

  • you should baton your knife with wood! i don't know how durable the Ratt III is, but i wouldn't do that with my knife. also are you using wing feathers or tail feathers? plus where does the gut come from? is it tendon or something else?

  • whre is pathfinder based

  • If he was going to cut the feather in half, why did he waste half of it?

  • @rangerchallengebravo because one half will make the arrow spin right and the other half will make the arrow spin left if both halves are used on the same arrow the fletching will be pointless but if they are used on a diferent arrow i think it would be fine but then you will have arrows that spin in diferent directions which may affecy shooting of which side of the boy you shoot the arrow from but im no expert, tis my own oppinion

  • the piace of rivercane u didnt use looked muck straiter

  • Really outstanding instruction...thanks so much!

  • hey dave, you shouldnt throw the other half of the turkey feather! it makes REALLY good fluflu fletching. Turkey feathers are unbelievably expensive here in romania. It's about 1 dollar per 1 long feather.

  • 1 dollar each feather??? wow in my country i can buy 50 feathers for 1 dollar. In Romania are not too many turkeys? why is that expensive price?

  • I agree, three feathers two arrows. Here in the US the common feather found in metropolitan areas like here in Los Angeles is pidgin. Also called Squab by the upperclass registrants & innercity chicken by those of us that eat it free. Those only have one side that is usable for good fletching. I also use seagull & the occasional hawk feather I find. I need go about 250 miles to get to any turkey grounds. =o(

  • "registrants" was supposed to be 'Restaurants".

  • you can be fined $150,000 and get stuck in prison for 5 years for using the hawk feathers.... just so you know....

  • funny. I have had fish & game wardens buy hawk fletched arrows from me & yet to see a fine.

  • look up "law on hawk feathers".

it states that is is illegal to own, sell, buy or collect hawk, eagle and owl feathers unless you have at least ½ native American blood and have applied and been approved for i license for feathers, ect.

and there ARE crocked fish and game wardens.....

  • your an idiot those are turkey flight feather

  • duh..... read the comments below before you make an ass out of your self....

  • really?!? now I'm worried. NOT! They better have a HUGE prison then because I know a lot of people that have them for various reasons. But then again if I worried about laws, It also illegal to hunt & fish without one to, but I've did that to to feed myself when I was traveling the bit of the world I have been too. And will most likely do so again if my wife dies before I do, as I will be going into canada/alsaka to live out my life in the bush. Guess now I'm on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list eh?

  • all i'm saying is it's not worth the risk.

  • Life IS a risk. If you are afraid of a risk, what life do you live? If I were afraid to take risk, I would never have seen the 1/43 (at least) of this planet I have seen. If I had stopped every time I had been told not to do something or go somewhere, I would've been dead 40 years ago. You do what you gotta do, stay safe & tucked in. I have a life & I love living it. I agree that hunting these birds is a crime worth punishment, but not using that which they no longer need for fear is ludicrous.

  • it would be very hard to get that close, and if it was say... a buck it would be ill advised to get that close.

  • getting close is not that hard. simply knowing how to not appear threatening, walking with softer footsteps, and patience. It may take as much as a half hour from spotting it to getting that close. Whats the rush? Worried about bucks? I stop hunting it if it's not. Let me guess, you use buck piss or fox piss to cover your scent. Right? Try cow, horse or sheep dung. Not just anywhere but under armpits & around genital area & thighs. THERE! You no longer smell like a threat or pest to the deer.

  • It is now just a simple matter of tracking & maneuvering in once prey has been spotted. If it bolts don't chase it, simply follow the trail as it wont have gone far, just far enough to feel safe. You will see it again shortly. Circle it as you move in, acting as another grazer, grazing. Never heard of 'wolf in sheep's clothing'? That is a play on a hunting tactic that predates the bow & throwing spear. It worked for primitive man & still works today.

  • Ever see wood carvings of ameroindians hunting wearing full animal hides complete with head & legs draped over them? How about the wall paintings in Europe showing the litic peoples doing the same thing. Do you think this just some hoodoo ritual or something? No, they are hunting & with the same skills I use to get so close. Ranged weapons were invented to aid with ease & safty when hunting BIG game that could & would fight back only, never needed.

  • Some of the best arrow wood preferred by Native American Indian tribes are choke cherry, dog wood, witch hazel, river cane, wild rose and reeds like cattail shoots. Almost all wild shafts must be hand straitened with heat. rarely will u ever find a perfect strait shaft in the wild.

  • whyd you turn off the acdc song lol

  • i tried to straighten some ash branches like this and it worked alright for some of them

  • how the hell do i find sum good wood

  • hint buy 3/8 inch dowel rods from a craft store =D

  • smart :)

  • thanks ~.^ they are fairly straight. but to make sure they are look down the "shaft" to make sure before you buy them.

  • Why pay for what is freely gotten from nature. When I bow hunt I make it & the arrows in the field. Every now & then I actually need to straighten a shaft, but mostly have no trouble finding material that is straight, but I don't look for specific wood, I use the straightest ones I find. Common problem is knots & lumps on the outer skin of the shaft and cared for with sandpaper or rough stone. The only thing I bought is the string I used, the saw & knife, and the shaggy rug I use to cover with.

  • Couldn't you just split the feather down the middle like you do anyway, but without removing half of the feather... Two for one, no?

  • no, because if you use different sides of the feather on the same arrow it'll not fly straight.

  • Thats why you use both sides for different arrows. Though I have added odd sized feathers & still had straight shots for the 5-10 foot or so I had between me & my prey. Hell I have shot deer with unfletched arrows as well, but thats using stalking skills not everyone uses in the modern age.

  • 5-10 feet..... the arrows I've make shoot over 300 feet straight -.- and that's only on a 25BL recurve i use for target.....

and there is no way in hell you've killed a deer with an unfetched arrow.. and i really doubt you could get within even 30 feet of your "prey" unless the animals are a custom to people....

  • what, you afraid to get close? Maybe it will hurt you or something? And you have no idea what I have or havn't done with what. Just because it is beyond your comprehension, does not make it fiction. It just make you look like a moron to those of us that know how to.

  • no, I'm only saying there is no way you or anyone else would be able to get within 5-10 feet of a wild animal with out it being already dead or close to it.

and don't make an ass out of yourself, we all know you're lying... or at least those of us that have been hunting before....

  • I see you never learned stalking 101. the trick is to be smarter then what you are hunting. Im betting your one of those that shoots first too eh? From as far as 200 yards, I'm impressed. NOT! Riddle me this oh wise one. How is it man has done it for a thousand years but all of a suddenly can not? Maybe because he has the a mentality like yours to impede him?? First you learn to cover your scent & form properly, then act like what it sees & smells. You can then all but smack it on the ass...

  • only problem to that one is that most things you'd be hunting can hear you long before they can smell you...

and with the creation of guns 99.9% of animals have as a result, gained heightened hearing so as to not get killed as easy.

  • thats why you use soft sole shoes (like moccasins etc.), socks, bare feet, depending on how much stealth you want to try & employ. They hear it but if you do it correctly they do not spook at the sound. They get weary yes, but that's it. They look & smell. How do you think a big cat sneaks up so close? This is where you have your form camouflaged. Deer especially know the human form so you need do more to distort as well as cover it and proper covering also distorts it.& NEVER approach directly!

  • @liberatedhumanbeing don't get so high on your horse. You're right. So what. Go live outdoors and do the things you're talking about. Teach others the skills to hone and pass on the knowledge. Don't stoop to petty lows exchanging barbs in a digital forum with couch-survivalists.

  • @shadows666love

Eh, I been that close to wild animals plenty. Rarely when hunting but it does happen. I'd say far more often by accident than by stalking. Stalking that close... I've heard of people who can do it- but that does not suggest that just anyone can. It's an extraordinary skill that takes years of trial and error- like any other difficult thing. Aint easy by no means. But you're right- if you get that close it's likely injured or sick.

  • Those burning feathers must reek!

  • why are you cutting on a rock?

  • i'm not sure...but i think he may know how to sharpen his own knife if he dulls it.!

  • is that your ranch

  • just a random coment...

are you left handed, well I guess thats question but ah a coment is

i think the arrows would be more user friendly if you shaped the flites in stead of leaving them as wide bulky feathers

    but genoualy very help ful

    thanks

  • great vid bud

  • Mad thanks for making the end of Primitve Arrows
