PC's at the moment are about 10-11 times more powerful than consoles. It was recently released that the XBox 720 will be 6 times more powerful than the 360. That still does not catch up with PC's.

I don't even understand why console gamers are even bothering to compare themselves to PC? PC just wins, full stop. It just takes technological know-how to build a computer that's great value, and there's a bit more hassle with installation etc. Once you're established, PC will always outperform in terms of graphics, resolution and fps. You don't need to spend that much, honestly. But that's no reason not to buy a console if it's what your friends play, because there are far more console gamers.

@Roflcopta135 You either aren't playing it at 1080p+ resolutions or it isn't updated to direct x 11. My graphics card cost about 400 euros about 6 months ago and it still dips below the magic 25 frames per second at points! Although crysis games have a history of being very poorly programmed and optimised so everything else should be fine.
@bigchrish81 You can get a GTX 570 for €300 or even less and runs crysis 2 with dx11 and 1080p at +30 FPS. Something is wrong with your card or the game.
If you think about it, a console runs it on low dx9 settings, 30 FPS with drops and 720p.

It's mainly SLI / Crossfire when you need a very high end CPU. It's great if you have the money, but not required. Very few games even have ultra setting that requires that much power.

The reason why people like console gaming is becuase, growing up on a platform like the playstation 1, sega-dreamcast, etc means that you have grown to the accessablity of a console. Grab a disc plob it in play simple as. @varletdeath I don't know how what is the average framerate on the Xbox 360 version of The Witcher 2. If I had to guess, it would be the usual 30 FPS, which means occasionally dipping to 25 FPS as well. But you can be absolutely sure the Xbox 360 uses graphics settings MUCH lower than those you're using on your PC.
Switching to a Xbox 360 will bring you all the benefits of a console, of course, but it will be a big step down in performance (and graphics, consequently).
@jayquan17ify Most dedicated servers do not have hacking "shields." They have actual admins playing on the server. If the admin is not on the server then at least one person on the server knows how to contact them.

@varletdeath The Xbox 360 runs games at 1280x720 or lower, usually around 30 FPS, and with visual settings generally comparable to developers set as "medium" on their PC counterparts. That's not a very high standard.
The thing is, a Conroe processor and a G80/G92 GPU are more powerful than the consoles. Regardless of how much time passes, they'll still be more powerful, and consequently will still run games better. The same applies to your computer, which is even faster than that.
@varletdeath Consoles desperately need hardware upgrades. And they don't "release more potential" with time. Developers learn better ways to use that hardware, but their performance remains exactly the same.
PC, on the other hand, does NOT need to be upgraded anually. A computer bought in 2007 (Core 2 Duo E6000 series + GeForce 8800 series, for example) would still run every game ever released, and much better than consoles do.

Well it is true that PC can produce better graphics, and of course with PC gaming you have versatility, from controlling graphics in your game, to the different controls like controllers or keyboard and mouse. Problem is, is that it can be expensive, you will spend at least $500 in a gaming PC that will outperform consoles(desktop) or up to $1000 on a laptop. If you have the money that's great, if not, console is best. My budget laptop can handle some games, but the rest, I'll use my console.
i have xfx hd 6870 and amd x3 450 ( its way worse then phenom 970) also 8gb ddr3 ram. Battlefield 3 runs at high settings on 1650X1080 , fps(in singleplayer) never dips below 40fps.

@BritishNathan Brazil is an exception to the price issue. Here, local companies redistrubute the PC software and are not subject to import taxes. Console games, on the other hand, must be imported and are then taxed as foreign entertainment products.
In 2009 I got a PC not because it was my first choice, but because when accounting the cost of the games I could not afford a console. It's the very opposite to what happens on other countries.

Between every new memory format (DDR2 > DDR3; GDDR3 > GDDR4 > GDDR5) there is the same improvement, the capacity to use higher frequencies with lower voltages. But on the GDDR5's case, not only it achieves higher frequencies than GDDR3 and GDDR4 with lower voltages, but also it transfers 4 bits per cycle instead of 2, doubling the achieved bandwidth at the same frequency as GDDR3/GDDR4.

Current PCs offer several times the processing power of a PS3 console, they could not only run any game the PS3 runs, but also run it better.

It's mainly SLI / Crossfire when you need a very high end CPU. It's great if you have the money, but not required. Very few games even have ultra setting that requires that much power.

Besides, "age" has little to do with this. The HD5870 is over two years old, but is still faster than most HD6000 series GPUs and fully supports current APIs such as DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.

@varletdeath I don't know how what is the average framerate on the Xbox 360 version of The Witcher 2. If I had to guess, it would be the usual 30 FPS, which means occasionally dipping to 25 FPS as well. But you can be absolutely sure the Xbox 360 uses graphics settings MUCH lower than those you're using on your PC.
Switching to a Xbox 360 will bring you all the benefits of a console, of course, but it will be a big step down in performance (and graphics, consequently).

The thing is, a Conroe processor and a G80/G92 GPU are more powerful than the consoles. Regardless of how much time passes, they'll still be more powerful, and consequently will still run games better. The same applies to your computer, which is even faster than that.

@varletdeath Consoles desperately need hardware upgrades. And they don't "release more potential" with time. Developers learn better ways to use that hardware, but their performance remains exactly the same.
PC, on the other hand, does NOT need to be upgraded anually. A computer bought in 2007 (Core 2 Duo E6000 series + GeForce 8800 series, for example) would still run every game ever released, and much better than consoles do.

Well it is true that PC can produce better graphics, and of course with PC gaming you have versatility, from controlling graphics in your game, to the different controls like controllers or keyboard and mouse. Problem is, is that it can be expensive, you will spend at least $500 in a gaming PC that will outperform consoles(desktop) or up to $1000 on a laptop. If you have the money that's great, if not, console is best. My budget laptop can handle some games, but the rest, I'll use my console.

@BritishNathan Brazil is an exception to the price issue. Here, local companies redistrubute the PC software and are not subject to import taxes. Console games, on the other hand, must be imported and are then taxed as foreign entertainment products.
In 2009 I got a PC not because it was my first choice, but because when accounting the cost of the games I could not afford a console. It's the very opposite to what happens on other countries.

Today I don't play anymore, so I use a basic Core i3 notebook (surprisingly, the Core i3-2310M I have here is quite a lot faster than both Wolfdales I had on my desktop).

Between every new memory format (DDR2 > DDR3; GDDR3 > GDDR4 > GDDR5) there is the same improvement, the capacity to use higher frequencies with lower voltages. But on the GDDR5's case, not only it achieves higher frequencies than GDDR3 and GDDR4 with lower voltages, but also it transfers 4 bits per cycle instead of 2, doubling the achieved bandwidth at the same frequency as GDDR3/GDDR4.
