He was one of the trumpet greats of jazz, but I truly believe that reverse racial descrimination in the jazz culture (both musician and or just jazz fan), worked against him to the point that usually only Charlie Parker fanatics like me have ever sought out his recordings. Granted, he did have some trademark riffs he repeated too often in multiple recordings; still, he deserves ranked high in the history of trumpet greats. Just listen to him!
Lovely., boricuajazzz8. Thank you so much for sharing this contribution with us. You have impeccable taste. This performance is so beautifully understated. Your website is terrific as well. I'm Steve Lacy's nephew and it's so nice to enjoy fine jazz this late in time. Keep up the good work. We listeners really appreciate the time and effort you put in to selflessly keep the art alive and healthy. "Red lives" (and so does Bird).
I would love to hear/see the whole song. It's titled "How Do You Know," and composed by Garry Dial, the pianist in this video. I heard Red, Garry, Ira Sullivan and Joey Baron perform this live several times back in the early 80's. What a fantastic and unsung group!
damn that's good.
