According to NME 8th May 1974 ~ the last track on Atom Heart (premiered at the Bath Festival 1970) ~ 'Breakfast' was originally conceived, rumour has it, to allow the Madcap himself to return to the stage with his old band, to cook sausages. That maybe puts another spin on this song.

i dislike people who say these songs came from simpler times... It came out just prior to the civil rights movement and during the Vietnam war. Far from simple. It came from equally difficult times. Great songs aren't inspired from no where.

@mongchilde I couldn't agree more. Even when I first started listening to Floyd when I was in 5th grade, I loved the piano pieces by Richard Wright. He was the quiet genius in the band, like John Paul Jones was to Zep. Roger Waters should feel forever shamed for essentially firing him during the making of The Wall. He was the darkest and most passionate of the musicians in one of the most progressive bands ever. I love this song.

"My friends are lying in the sun, I wish that I was there". A very evocative lyric. At the time this was a very experimental album. Don't know if a rock band had tried a 'brass' album before that time. Love the way this song, (the best on the album), carries through the brass theme. Also love the various piano styles used in one song. Alan's Pysc Breakfast was supposedly written to allow the Madcap to return to the stage to cook sausages ~ careful with that pan Eugene!

The suite has it's moments, but this is far out the best album track. If and Breakfast are so unbearable boring, I wish they had extended this one to double playing time. I may have been, it ends rather abrupt.
