Hitler could have taken russsia before the onset of winter but instead chose to waste the first precious months on taking leningrad for political and propaganda reasons. His generals wanted to repeat WW l by a sweep through the low countries and felt it would take a year to destroy the French, because they had more respect for the French Army than it merited. Hitler saw a better plan & used it cause he knew the Allies would expect WW l redux.& the French had no will to fight.
Hitler's generals loved to lay all the blame on a dead evil man when a lot of the failures were theirs

Also, I don't know where you got your information but France was more than powerfull enough to defeat the german army. The reason that france fell so quickly was because of Manstein's proposed flank through the ardennes that cut off a huge chunk off France's and England's forces in Belgium and The Netherlands.

Hitler was the head of the Army, so he simply saw then adopted Manstein's plan, that was his prerogative. It took genius to see that was the right plan. Like you said, it worked because the Allies were expecting the Germans to use the old plan of advancing through Belgium, similar to WW l, and sent the cream of their forces into poorly & unprepared positions in Belgium. Manstein was recognized and favored by Hitler who made him a Field Marshall and one of his fave commanders.
