@MrStephyul How is this at all overacted? If you just found out that the love of your life died, you are not going to be silent while your heart is breaking. You're dying too. You must just not know or even grasp the concept of love to make the comment that she over acted this part. She's a brilliant actress and so far, in my opinion, no one comes close to her performance in this movie.
WOW! SHES DYNOMITE! It reminded me of one of my Favorite French films; FORBIDDEN GAMES. at the end of which a little girl calls our 'Michele Michele" in a crowded train station
Whenever I see scenes such as this, with such passion and extreme emotion I wonder how many takes a director would do? How many times could you interupt and repeat this genius? I commend Marion for her brilliant performance, this is what probably won her the Oscar. Bravo Marion.
I understand this. I understand her. We are kindred spirits. This brings me to tears.
I love someone as deeply as she loved Marcel. While he is still here with me, and she lost him... He doesn't love me anymore and we will never be again.
No matter how hard I try, I cannot help but cry at this scene. What beautiful acting by Marion, she truly became Edith. And the directing, wow! The placement of this song was perfect for the scene and the transition from despair to grace as she enters the stage is magnificent. Bravo
What amazes me is the fact that all of this is ONE take... The camera follows Marion... That is what I call perfection. Mr. Olivier Dahan, I THANK YOU for creating this movie...
impresionante escena dramática que sintetiza de manera magistral la esencia de vida de Edith Piaf. Maravillosa actuacion , direccion y montaje de una obra maestra del cine contemporaneo
But the way it is filmed is incredible. This scene is breathtaking. The way you see who transistion to the stage to show how she really did sing about her life, and you could feel the emotion. Stunning.
truly one of the greatest female performances ever. Others I also love are: Theron in Monster, Kidman in The Hours, Streep in Sophies choice, Burstyn in Requiem for a dream, Bates in Misery, Fletcher in one flew over..., Cecilia Roth in Todo Sobre mi Madre, Bondarchuk in Solaris (1972), Davis in All about Eve, Hudson in Almost Famous (yeah, I loved her performance), McDormand in Fargo, and many others but I´m running out of letters. anyways, she was indeed magnificient
I saw this film when it came out in a tiny theater in the city I live in, it was playing no where else. I sobbed through out. No one knew who she was at this time. I turned to my friend and said she has to win an Oscar for this there is no way, so amazing, just so so amazing. What an actress. Also, unbelievable cinematography/ camera work, that long shot is devastating.
UGHHHHH!!! SPECTACULAR. I know that feeling when you're told a loved one's death: you pace around like you're trying to escape it, you tremble all over, and there's intense pain you just can't describe. Her close attention to that sort of detail is what NAILED this performance. I cry every time.
J'ai jamais vu quelque chose de similiaire en regardant ce talent de Marion Cotillard. Chaque fois je ne peux plus arrêter de pleurer, c'est si triste.
I always thought this sequence was suggesting a 'Supernatural Visitation' which is an experience of presence; or communication between the recently deceased and their spouse or progeny....
A truly heartbreaking scene. Edith and Marcel had a deep, abiding and understanding love. Marcel's death in a plance crash in 1949 devastated her, she never quite recovered.............It can truly be said that she loved him so.
Wow... Marion is able to make me cry even when I watch this scene out of context.... The emotions are literally tangible with her performance..... Amazing...
After watching this..you understand why she won. She deserves every single award for this part. Every serious actor should study this performance. Incredible
** Sniff ** Wait ** sniff ** Give me a second ** gulp ** OK ... I think I'm alright now ... Wow! I saw this movie a couple of years ago, and had forgotten what an amazing performance Cotillard gave. In addition to her excellent acting, I'm amazed at how well she nailed Edith's voice. Great subject matter, great acting, great cinematography, sets, and costume -- of course, great music -- all make an excellent film!
@LoveMeryl1 WHO SAID SHE DIDN'T DESERVE THE OSCAR????? Who ever it was should be made to watch Abbot and Costello films for the rest of their lives, and watch them when they end up in hell, for all eternity. LOL
She's completely mad to the point where she can't even distinguish dream, nightmare and reality. There's only one cure, one remedy.God must re-unite her back with Marcel in heaven, grazie a dio per l'amour de cielo !!! In bocca al lupo, buona fortuna Edith / Marcel...
They met while in new york on a singing / boxing tour correct ?? she married many time, many men.Doese anyone know how many before Marcel ?? who's really her one true love ?? alot of people said,it's Marcel the boxer..
He's already dead from the plane crash right ?? she's in a state of dream,a state of denial.A famous french boxer,a married man and a love affair with famous french singer who had countless men before Marcel.Heaven wouldn't allow it,his plane crash and he left Edith gasping air,for oxygen. What ever happened to Marcel's ex-wife ?? did she celebrate or did she grieve ??
another beauty that is equally remarkable as marion is the camera work.
the entire scene was all one shot and there were mirrors everywhere as well. the emphasis they gave to her reaction after Louis told her the plane crashed. the zoom when she broken down.
Every time I heard Josh Groban sang this song, it all turned out to be lots of tears running over my face. However, the background of the song made it really sentimental.
Like Helen Hunter in The Piano, both actresses didn't need to say anything in order to express the agony one feels when words cannot fathom the depth of one's pain. They both had me blubbering. Loved every minute of it. ;-)
Without a doubt, the best acted scene I have seen in a movie in YEARS!! This was a stunning performance that should go down in history as one of the greatest ever captured on celluloid.
By far one of the best scenes, in all its aspects, I have ever seen. Ms. Cotillard's performance comes close to being the best, i've seen, by an actress.
God...at 0:40 when she's going to the kitchen, fluffing up her hair happily as she goes...:( I keep going back to the beginning, to the part before the dream is over..
presque jamais une actrice française n'était arrivé à ce degré de perfection dans l'incarnation d'un personnage aussi puissant et difficile. Chapeau madame marion cotillard une actrice incroyable et une scène menée à la perfection. J'en pleure à chaque fois.
no, it's just a thing to cinematic way to show how deep in love she was with marcel that she started to live in her own world --that is until she was snapped back to reality with the news of marcel's death.
