Man did we take the music of 80s and 90s for granted, with all the "American Idol" junk that is played now. The Police were epic and it was too bad they never could get over all of their internal conflicts to stay together.
@profbsu I agree with you (thumb up) but if they didn't have conflicts they probably wouldn't have also published all this gorgeous music. I mean, it's a side effect of genius and sheer talent... being uncapable of compromise
@dalchimsky : absolutely, you are right....But, they only did like 4 albums, they certainly had a few more in them before they imploded and broke up...
@profbsu well sting made the police, he made great music on his own, with or without the police he is awesome, the 80s were great for music, idk if it will ever be as good again
Sting's solo career has been hit and miss, but he slowly amassed a lot of wonderful singles post-Police as well...although he went far too soft and new agey for a time. His most amazing quality, the one that sets him apart, is his ability to write extraordinarily eloquent and literate lyrics, while grafting them to equally beautiful melodies. Bravo Stingy!
I am amazed of the number of great songs sting has written over the years... I never get tired of listening to his solo work or with the police... amazing!!!
Truly brilliant song, and album. For those who don't like the video, it is made for Sting's women fans. The brief shirt, the closeups of his cut cheekbones, all perfect for turning on his leagues of female fans! lol
Sting was maybe in that moment (1985) at the top of his sex-appealing, "Terminator's young brother" looks and he was right after quitting The Police (Synchronicity was from 1983 and Police's most overblasting critics and commercial success). I've never been a Police fan, less a Sting fan either, but I still keep feeling this one is his most sincere, subtle, bittersweet-toned song ever (the same I might think about "King Of Pain"), at least from his hit singles. Great song, bad video though.
@hammertoejoe well, the thing about Sting is that he gradually gained in the 80s the "respect" Bono then Beck got from the audience years after, as the "voice" of a generation (MTV even early 90s were kinda sick of him by making jokes like "Jesus Jones minus Sting = Jones") because he became the waving green flag Messiah having legal problems with the Amazon natives. That was a contradiction by mixing a musical carreer and stardom with politics...
By the way, in my previous note; the word "Distain" was spelled incorrectly on behalf of the previous echange of words by those quarreling. I am fully aware "Disdain" is the correct spelling!
Why to people come and listen to great music, only to embark themselves into conversations of distain for each other? This song is about protection, and guarding someone you love, and yet you all come here and tear each other down. I don't get it! Why can't you just listen to the music and enjoy it? If you don't like Sting and his music...why were you here in the first place? Just saying!
what a compelling metaphor - the Age of Chivalry meets the Industrial Revolution, high romance is turned to trench warfare - anyone ever have a relationship go south like that? Once upon a time, my own first love dug her nails into my face and I clouted her head with a closed fist - about as horrifying as machine guns and barbed wire and massed dead, in its way - Sting must have known what it was like to write this
@SupernalOne Ah, THOSE relationships. The type where the willfully forceful 'opponent' demands that you control their systemic environment in a fashion that forces you to be a reluctant mindreader and emotional security guard, then psychologically defecates upon you for taking away their 'right' to make opposing decisions to the ones you've made while demanding you maintain perfect order through clusterfucked stimuli. The judge didn't listen to me. How about you?
Ouch -- I think men are dogs and women are cats -- dogs needing approval and cats being constitutionally self-centered. Or maybe women like to play house, and the man is just the Ken doll. All we had between us were the children, and she got them. At this point, I want to be a hermit in the desert, maybe a prospector - no static -
@The5thAngelRose "Unpithy"? Not in my vocablary. If you're referring to the opposite of "pithy" , then I say you are most likely a woman who grasps at context of words and apply your own meaning from a narcissistically feminist viewpoint. My comment was pithy, but for those who feel I'm saying "pissy" with a lisp, I'll put it this way. "My comment was 100% on the mark. Those who say otherwise simply don't understand the english language. In closing I invite you to "pith off".
@tyme4mike Your original babbling was the most verbose post ever witnessed on this site. Your mangling of the English language is hysterical. Your comment was so off the mark it wasn't even in this solar system. Your limp wristed attempt at insult is vintage middle school. E S A B A T M, mike.
Sting's a legend. Everything he is involved in from The Police to his own stuff is a classic. I can sit and listen to not just this but anything of his over and over!
As a lover of music, and a musician, I allow myself to enjoy, the stories that he is telling with his voice, and his music.
Far too many critics, have taken apart his talents, and attempted to diminish the significane of his contributions, but years later, he's still standing, when many of those critics, have other careers!
Profoundly powerful in its emotionality, but wtf is with Sumner's dancing? Didn't he ever hear of kaopectate? Looks like he's two seconds from launching the barking blowouts all over himself..fuck he looks retarded...
This man has amazed me for years... There is no other voice or bass player or composer I'd rather listen too... stings talent is from another galaxy... what a song.
Total sex appeal 3:42 and 4:08 sting me and make it hurt. LOL........ He is so handsome then and has aged like fine wine. Just keep getting better. Poetic lyrics and just think he was an English teacher before all of this took place.

I would rather say, the "former russian commando eager to go west" look. He reminds me of a kind of cross between Pavel Tsatsouline and Dolph Lungreen, who by an uncanny chance would have traded his AK for an electric guitar. Very weird, very 80s, even if my tastes have evolved, I still love that kind of stuff!...
Good Grief, how I love this video!!! To me, He is the perfect man. Adore the way he glances down, then back up at "You" and gives an ever so slight smile at the end. What a beautiful person to write such moving songs.
He wrote his most beautiful songs for Frances Tomelty, like this one, Every breath you take, King of Pain, Wrapped around your finger....When I see him when he was 35 and listen to these songs, I don't know how she could have left him lol. Well I don't know anything about their private life, but oh my god he's sooooooo irresistible!!!!
Yeah....I think he met Trudy in 82.....But these songs are about real love and pain.....This is terrible, one can be unfaithfull and incredibly in love....
Wow, I played his tape over, and over in my tape player........candles burning, my meditation, good feelings =-) I enjoy my alone time.....

From his solo albums I really like Ten Summoner's Tales and from the The Police, Synchronicity.

I was born a Sting fan! God knows he's a product of straight soul! D.U.D.E. keep producing!

Not only good music he made, but the texts are also quite demanding - i like this album, this was one of my first LPs I bought.

I tell you what, I like Sting's music, but that Nazi haircut, and that little dance he's doing, is getting on my nerves!

@glynnth if you are not free to accept, what you are seeing, just close your eyes and enjoy the music double :-)

Wow, how old is Sting now? I remember when this came out and I am 41. It was my favorite song when it first came out. Great song! Thanks!

I too remember it very well -- one of Sting's best -- and I'm 50:). There's much good stuff on "The Dream of the Blue Turtles."
Sting is now 58 --

He wrote his most beautiful songs for Frances Tomelty, like this one, Every breath you take, King of Pain, Wrapped around your finger....When I see him when he was 35 and listen to these songs, I don't know how she could have left him lol. Well I don't know anything about their private life, but oh my god he's sooooooo irresistible!!!!

I meant: I don't know how she could leave him.....Well I think so......Sorry for my english, I'm french....but not Frances bouhouhou :(
