@Umbrella2525 Not at all. If it wasn't for the technology THEN, we wouldn't have the technology we have NOW... To be honest, I miss the simplicity of those days sometimes.
There wasn't really anywhere to slot it in with this episode, since i was talking pretty much non-stop in the old footage. But there will be more commentaries in future episodes.
We both smoked, and I still do. And I had the added bonus of being the only one bringing in any money, so I had the joy of supporting BOTH our habits! :P (She smoked way more than me too...)
Yeah, but not in the same way we use it now. Back then epic meant, well, epic. A Mega Spectacle of Massive Proportions. I used it in reference to upcoming segments sometimes to give them a little more build-up. It wasn't used as a replacement for "cool" or "awesome" like it is now, but rather in a semi-proper context.
Yep, I'm one of those scum-sucking filthy degenerate smokers. ;)
That was the logo of the Community Access Channel where I worked. You'll see/hear a lot more about that in upcoming episodes... But that was some of the first stuff I did for them. I showed them what the Amiga could DO, baby! :D I think that's one of the reasons I was ultimately hired on as the main Program Director there. My logo animations tended to look better (and I made them faster) than the other director's...hehehe
DeluxePaint III was a pretty slick little program. I used it and the subsequent version for many years. It was basically a paint and 2D animation program. Really easy to use, and quite powerful for its time. I used it for everything from basic titles to more complex animated sequences like what you saw.
And no, that was all done on the Amiga 2000HD (might want to read the titles preceding the CG section again!) Titles on the Apple IIc were very simplistic by comparison.
Man Sean even then you were graphicly awesome & my hand shakes are still prerventing me from doing simple stuff, dang my hand shakes! Great stuff as always bud, Amigas were awesome back in the day!
This has to be my new favorite MMC Retro episode! When you were talking about the computers you kept glancing out the window nervously as if a sniper was targeting you.
This was epic for sure, loved the glance at the various technology of 1990. I only had an Apple II, and was not old enough to see if i can understand animation, all i knew was to play oregon trail. Loved the music, your a prodigy composer for sure from a young age.
MR. ZARANYZERAK, what do you think about selling DVDs [or maybe Blu-Rays] containing your videos, I think James Rolfe did the same thing. [7:35 and 12:41] Naughty Man Mr. ZARANYZERAK.
Why did you put these with the black bars? I mean, since the source is 4:3, you could just upload it as 4:3 and then youtube will show the black bars if necessary. Because now I see the video in a small window with black bars all around it (my monitor is 4:3 so I should be able to view this in full screen).
Time for a new monitor? It's formattted for 16x9 displays, just like all my videos. You're seeing it that way because you're watching on a 4x3 monitor. On a 16x9 display, you would only see bars on the sides, which is correct. If I uploaded it 4x3, then two thing would happen - YouTube would pillarbox it ANYWAY, and it wouldn't get the HD option. Even though the source material is SD, YouTube HD looks cleaner than HQ, so I put even old stuff like this in a format that will use it.
Oh, to clarify - YouTube would pillarbox it in the small display, but you'd be able to bring it up fullscreen. But the main thing is it wouldn't give me the HD option.1080p 16x9 monitors are dirt cheap now - mine was only 200 bucks, and it's a decent size (21.5")
I didn't see your last comment while I was writing mine. My current monitor is 21" and can show full HD (max rezolution is 2048x1536, but it also supports 1920x1080, I just have to adjust the height). This is what I like about CRTs - they support a lot of video options. I only wish my monitor could support PAL video (15kHz/50Hz) without using a line doubler, but that's wishing too much.
Youtube does not pillarbox 4:3 videos on 4:3 monitors, it shows them in full screen.
Anyway, I can download the video and crop the black bars out, I just wondered if you had a reason for doing it like this. I know your new videos are filmed in 16:9, so it's OK.
As for my monitor, I would really like to have a good 16:9 CRT, but they are expensive and I cannot find them locally (and shipping ~40kg would be even more expensive). I do not like LCDs because they only support one resolution etc.
Hmmm..not sure what you're talking about with LCD, mine can support just as many resolutions as my old CRT. I just leave it in 1920x1080 for the screen space. And I can play PAL stuff no problem...
If LCD gets a non-native resolution, it distorts the image, because it needs to scale it up to its native resolution, so the image looks like it's out of focus. A CRT shows all resolutions clearly. I mean if (for example) I connect the RGB output of my DVD player to the monitor, it does not work. My monitor needs at least 30kHz horizontal frequency, so I have to use my PC to watch the video. Anyway, I can watch 1080i videos with no problem, since my monitor supports 1920x1080@60i but not 50i.
Ah, okay. Yeah, I think I've seen that distortion effect you're talking about. Guess I never really noticed because I always just pick one that makes the most use of the screensize (while still being legible) and stick with that.
This comes down to physics. CRTs can change the size of a pixel, while LCDs can't. And since I am nearsighted I see that distortion quite clearly (with my glasses on I can read text on this page when the resolution is 1920x1440 without using magnification, though I usually use 1600x1200 and only switch when I need more space on the desktop.
To see the distortion more clearly, just use a monitor test program and run a sharpness or focus test.
That makes sense. On my old Amiga CRT monitor I could display both NTSC and PAL stuff, but I had to manually adjust the screen height. There were actually little manual adjustment dials on the back to adjust various screen parameters. :) But yeah, it was obviously changing the height/width of the pixels to accommodate one or the other. I'm near-sighted too, which is also why I don't tend to go higher than 1920x1080 - too bloody hard to read!
The height/width adjustments change the voltage of the vertical and horizontal oscillators. CRT is analog, and the pixel size depends on the incoming signal, it's just that the electron beam is modulated by the signal. So, the monitor does not see a difference between 1024x768 and 1280x768 resolutions, because the latter is just a bit higher pixel frequency, but not sync frequencies.
LCD has physical pixels that are fixed size.
It just occurred to me, you don't know how a CRT works...
Hehehe...when it comes to the extreme technical side of how EXACTLY stuff works, I don't know much. But when it comes to hooking it up, MAN I'm godly. :D I can put together a computer from a pile of parts and have it work perfectly on the first go, but if you ask me how it converts electric impulses into data and displays it on your screen, I couldn't begin to tell ya. I know some of the basic principles, but never got around to studying the actual hows and whys of what makes electronics work.
So yes, as hard as it may be to believe, there ARE limits to even my vast repositories of knowledge. ;) Which is why I'm glad to have knowledgeable viewers like you!
Digital devices like a computer escape me too (putting a PC together is easy),because they are usually very complex. On he other hand,I use a lot of old devices(like R2R tape recorders)that fail from time to time(the newest one is 19 years old so it's no surprise) so I have to know how to fix them,so I try to learn about older technology, like CRTs and magnetic tape recording. These devices were made so that they could be fixed in case something failed.New devices usually are very difficult to fix.
Very true. I guess you could say we're more "mechanically" inclined than "electronically" inclined. :) I can usually fix older equipment if it breaks down too (as I'm sure you can imagine, I have a lot of semi-ancient gear too), even if I don't understand exactly HOW it does what it does, I know enough about it to fix it.
Yea, old technology is a great hobby, but it takes a lot of knowledge. For example, I bought a ~40 year old fm tuner (Leak Trough Line Stereo) and now I'll need to align it so it works better. New topic to read and learn.
Fixing something without knowing how it works can be done with simple problems, like shorted capacitors, but for more weird problems it definitely helps being able to locate the problem component(s) faster.
Anyway, full explanation how CRT works won't fit in a 500 char comment, but basically it just draws a number of horizontal likes (resolution 1024x768 would mean 768 such lines), each line is continuous and modulated by the signal. The maximum frequency of the signal puts a limit on the resolution. This is how analog TV works too, that's why VHS, broadcast and laserdisc all have the same vertical resolution, but different horizontal resolution, they have different maximum frequencies.
I recommend the episode of "The Secret Life of machines" about television, it can be found here on youtube or in torrent sites. It explains quite well how CRTs work in more detain than I could write in 500char chunks.
You weren't kidding when you said this episode was going to be epic!
That animation you did was pretty cool for something out of 1990! That TV logo looks like that one optical illusion though [Is it a vase, or is it two of Sean's boobs side by side!? xD (No offence or anything, just joking around)].
