Aurora Borealis (The Northern Lights)

As beautiful as the aurora borealis is it's actually a sign of something dangerous. It has something to do with the sun it's some type of storm? Anyway the earth has a protective shield all around it called a magnetic field. The field is strong all around the earth except at the polar caps north/south poles it's weak in those two spots. So that's why you can only really see these storm shower lights from the sun at the poles. Still a beauty to watch!

Now this is nature at her best, and the most beautiful Auroras was the bright red one at 1:28-1:29, multi-color/blue/forest ones from 1:43-1:49, the purple/blue at 2:05, winter scene at 2:08, the green/blue ones from 2:15-2:25, and the strong green at 2:53. But overall, this is 3 minutes and 13 seconds of pure happiness, beauty, nature, and color.

word of advice: never whistle to the northern lights. I did once and I swear they came down and surrounded me. I was raised by my grandma who was a cree indian and she believed that the northern lights were spirits come to check on us. I got the feeling they werent happy I whistled...

Would be a good time to go north and try to see them, we are reaching a solar maximum when charged particles from the sun are thrown towards the earth and get captured by the magnetic field and filtered towards the weakest points, the north and south pole. Look on the nasa website to find out when SUNSPOTS are at a high and plan your trip around that.Good luck.

@1001mud yes the further south you go past canada they are just a shdow of what they would have looked like further north. It has to be a very large solar storm for them to be visible firther south than the arctic regions.

I have seen this many times and it takes my breath away every time. I live in north-west Norway. One I will never forget was like a black hole in the sky with colerfull shooting flames around it. Its never the same, and the colder and clearer it is, the more beautifull it becomes.

when i was in Alaska during the 60s i would see them almost every night in the winter while walking guard duty on a nike missal site way up north. they make the strangest sounds you ever heard. I was up in the mountains and at times it was 30 below zero or more, some nights there wouldn't even be a breeze,just dead silence,wolves and crunching snow from my boots and this weird sizzle.
