  • Love these Rig Rundowns but this one is especially good. Really interesting.

  • I want Nels to make love to my face.

  • "sick loops"

  • I love how he has a ton of different and unique guitars that are, for the most part, from all different companies. Super refreshing and intriguing. It bothers me so much when you see Petrucci's or Malmsteen's rig rundown and they have like 6 of the same guitar. Fucking boring.

  • Somebody tell me Rebecca's phone number please...

  • you know, for some reason it really pisses me off to see videos of guitarists rigs where the guitarist says, "and this is my strat in green, and this is my strat in red, and THIS is my strat in blue..."

but nels really seems to have a wide variety of guitars and a legitimate use for each one of them. not to mention all of his other gear. i'm in lust.

  • @tomfromwinchell Agreed. It's so funny, I literally just wrote a comment saying exactly the same thing, and then I scrolled down and read this. Good to see someone thinks the same way.

  • So a sixer of Grolsch equals 3 sets of strap locks. Must go to liquor store.

  • Awesome... Please tell me you are going to upload Jeffs rig?

  • Thank you so much for this... really.

  • Rebecca !... What ?

  • If Jeff has more guitars than Nels, then I hope their techs are paid VERY well. Holy shit those are some badass guitars.

  • †NELS†

  • I don't comment very much, but this video is just f-ing incredible. I can't think of another guitarist's rig I would want to watch a walk-through of more than Mr. Cline's setup. Thank you, Nels, for being so gracious, and thank you Ms. Dirk for being so patient and just letting Nels talk...it would've been so easy to keep interjecting stuff, but you just let him go and it was awesome to watch. My favorite youtube vid for sure.

  • Mesmerizing!

  • Grolsch strap locks!!!! my new hero

  • 1) I love when the actual artist takes us through their rig. 2) The video description says that Cline has an "expansive pedalboard" but I think PG means "expensive pedalboard." 3) That rosewood Jazzmaster is amazing.

  • Nels is a true great, fuck boring music, innovation all the way.

  • I am not that familiar with much of Nels work but he comes off as a funny guy and a classy guitarist. Interesting technique as well

  • @ralfcaetano I was, until the Nash Telecaster popped out. Then I turned to breasts again.

  • I use those Grolsch straplocks!

  • Now I know, that there are people who need some of these stuff ... that nobody needs !

  • Not once did I get bored while watching this entire video.

  • Best rig rundown! Learned a lot!

  • Essential viewing for any guitarist!!

  • @spider62able: Was it not a little arrogant for nymetsrock to assume Nels had not considered all possible techniques/approaches regarding the Fuzz Factory and his guitar? Sarcasm and humor are often mistaken as arrogance. Regardless, Nels is a rare specimen. Talent, creativity, tireless work ethic, humility and humor.

  • @marshall1967 The only thing worse than @nymestocks ignorance Is your arrogance! How about listening to others without being so judgmental!

  • 'This guitar is virtually indestructable for a Gibson; although the headstock did snap off at one point'.

I laughed at that one, Great vid.

  • @nymetsrock: whoops, spelling again... "coordinate". Want to be precise.

  • @nymetsrock: oops, meant to say "...are A genius." Did not want my typing/grammar skills to fall prey to your scrutiny.

  • @nymetsrock: Yes, I am sure Nels has never thought of doing that. There could not POSSIBLY be another reason he prefers to do it that way. Jeesh, you would think a guy with about 40 years of playing under his belt (and 20+ on Jags and JM's) could figure out how to cooridinate his guitar and effects. You sir, obviously, are genius. Please contact Mr, Cline immediately to inform him of your suggestion. Let us know what he thinks!

  • Very educational!

  • Comment removed

  • also if i had one suggestion for nels, it would instead of having to roll the vol pot down to change the oscillation pitch on the fuzz factory i would tell him to set the rythym section of his jm to be a kill switch just by turning the roller pot all the way down, simpler and easier to use, cant believe he hasnt thought of it

  • What a gentleman.

  • one of the only girl interviewers i can stand, man that one from the rollins show made me want to throw my computer across the room

  • Great rundown as always on one of my favorite and most fascinating guitarists of all time!

    Thanks PG!

  • Amazing. + very patient girl!

  • Thanks Nels, very cool!

  • "All I asked them to do was put equidistant cross inlays, which they later told me was a total pain in the ass. Um, cuz I like equidistant crosses. And 'No, I'm not Swiss'." CLASSIC!

  • This was such a treat!! Thanks for making this video :)

  • No video has ever made me want to spend money as much as this one has.

  • "The headstock broke off of this one, as they always do. . ." Huh?? I'm doing something wrong, cause my headstocks aren't breaking off enough.

  • this is the holy grail of all youtube videos. oh sweet baby jesus. thank you.

  • "fuzz factory + 2 octaves down=end of the world"

  • "That's a little too much reverb. Sorry." -- that made my day.

  • "Degradation is my sound" Nels, please adopt me.

  • why is it now only 38 mins? O.o

  • @humpreystrong This Rundown is the same length as it's always been; the poster who mentioned 40 minutes was rounding up. Actually, more than 40 minutes would have been shot, as there are several visible edits...

  • 27:57 Rebecca's impressed :)

  • Nels, thanks for being so open with your gear information!

  • Very cool, thank you

  • "It's even got a cool sticker on it of a cowgirl riding a pig!"

  • He uses gearmanndude urban strap locks!

  • this is porn for us guitar nerds

  • @lookingatcrap Who need tits when you got this? Huh!!!

  • me

  • @lookingatcrap the good kind, too.

  • Guitar at 9.00? Methinx it was for Prince :)

  • We also learned the 'virtually indestructible' means: 'destructible in real life'.

"I broke almost anything on my (virtually indestructible) guitar"

    XD

  • Does he have his Boss Tuner last or first in his chain?

  • I would have paid to see him blow a speaker in this video.

  • Badass. If there was ever a mad professor of sound it's Nels. Even cooler that when he makes weird noises in the vid, you can recognize where they were used in songs. Amazing.

  • Where is the Schroeder Blister Agent? I thought this was in his rig for sure.

  • Sounding great with that Schroeder amp!

  • Very cool!!!

  • Rebecca seemed to have a lot of fun, too :-). Great vid!

  • one of the most interesting, and inspiring, guitarist interviews that i've seen in a long time.

  • he should try the Evil Robot it has THE SAME magnatone trem.

  • What a cool guy!

  • wow! love that Hopf

  • 22:54 effects pedals/ 33:52 Bleep Labs Thingamagoop (similar to an optical theremin)/ 35:20 National lap steel (with a lovely art deco design)/ 37:30 Divine Noise Cables.

Premier Guitar's website has a text resource on Nels Cline's gear; just do a search on "premierguitar" and "nels cline"

  • I hope this is useful... 00:19 '59 Fender Jazzmaster/ 02:49 Henss Jazzmaster in rosewood/ 04:44 Gibson Les Paul (Junior?)/ 06:26 Jerry Jones Neptune 12-string/ 08:17 Jerry Jones 12-string and baritone doubleneck/ 10:39 Crown, painted by Norton Wisdom/ 11:48 Hopf Telstar Standard/ 14:54 Souldier Straps/ 15:27 '69 Fender Jaguar/ 17:01 Bill Nash Tele-style with Lollar pickups/ 18:44 Schroeder DB7 head (approx. 35 W), paired with Marshall JTM45 2x12 cabinet (continued...)

  • amazing!

  • 40 min of Rebecca Dirks, what else? =)

  • I know nothing about this guy but he seems quite special and brilliant.

  • @crow468 He's also in a jazz-ish band called the Nels Cline Singers. They have a bit of stuff on YouTube. Definitely check them out.

  • I make beer so I use my Grolsch bottles to refill . darn lol

  • Yes.

  • Thanks so much for doing this interview and posting!

  • Crazy... and wonderful:D Great guy!

  • Genius at work

  • This is the standard that all gearheads will be held to in future. Thank you for this interview!

  • Rebecca Dirks, definately my favourite sonic interrogator! Can't believe the $ on those Centaurs up to $1400.

  • Always a pleasure to hear and hear from Nels.

  • That felt like 15 minutes.

  • that rosewood jazz master is amazing.

  • Nels is a great guy. He uses our JAM Pedals and Crazy Tube Circuits effects both for Wilco and his Nels Cline Singers (and other projects).

  • finally a rig rundown for some one i'm interested in!

  • To have so much fun and get payed for it-this shouldnt be legal.

  • Saw Nels Cline play with Jim Black and some other dudes in a jazz group a couple of years ago when I was in NYC... so awesome. Amazing player. Would love any of his Jazzmasters :)

  • holy shit thats the freakin longest rig rundown ever isnt it

  • What a humble down-to-earth guy!! Didn't know Wilco but he seems really nice.

  • He seems like a really cool dude taking almost an hour out of his day to demo his rig... wow I have to get me some Wilco records I think

  • @tombola1990 Do yourself a huge favour and give Impossible Germany a listen (:

  • Can you imagine Rig Rundowns of the future? Everyone will play digitally autotuning guitar and axe-fx.

  • Crazy stuff, Rebecca D is hot!

  • his voice reminds me of eric johnson

  • Holy Shit...look at all those funky looking guitars. XD

  • Never heard of this guy before, but he's fucking wicked with those effects!

  • Hey I never noticed before, Rebecca is wearing a wedding ring. Congrats Rebecca, even though it is probably very late.

  • awesome 40 minutes. Guitars, pedals and Rebecca :) .. thank you PG

  • that was awesome.

  • I love finding out my favorite players use the same picks or pedals I do, like Nels. This was a GREAT video, and thanks for the 40 minutes worth!!!!!!

  • KLON CENTAUR!! YES!! MY fav pedal

  • whats that thing he plugged?? the thing with the light...any help please?!?!? thanks!!

  • @dinkymau It's a Thingamagoop from Bleep Labs (and writing that, I feel like I just stepped into a 50s Sci-Fi movie)...I saw a video with Arto Lindsay where the Brazilian guitarist Kassin is playing one of those or something similar. (You can search YT for Arto Kassin Multinatural)

  • @johnwaynesfoot thanks a lot man!!! :D

  • @uomoscozzese You should learn proper English before you try to insult somebody

  • @Glockenator I think you'll find my first comment was grammatically correct

  • @uomoscozzese No it isn't. "Shit gear with sounds that sound shit" is far from grammatically correct

  • @Glockenator sorry but I've taught English at school level and its far from wrong to use the same word more than once in any given sentence, maybe you should stop worrying about grammar and maybe do some warm up exercises for those burnt out fingers ;) P.S STOP BENDING GUITAR STRINGS WITH YOUR FINGERS INSTEAD OF YOUR WRIST... BAD FORM

  • strange person but awsome!

  • fucking sweeeeeeeeeet XD

  • I have no idea who is this guy and what is Wilco but he is so fun to listen to ! Excellent video !

  • Rebecca Dirks held up that microphone for 40 minutes... GOD BLESS HER

  • Comment removed

  • OH GOD I'VE WAITED FOR THIS FOR SO LONG

  • "Degradation is my sound"

  • Didn't Mike Rutherford play a 12 string/6 string bass doubleneck in Genesis?

  • @sonicvi I think Mike Rutherford did have a 12-string/6-string bass doubleneck; this has a baritone along with the 12-string...

  • he has such strange looking hands... well i guess you cant be this brilliant with normal people hands :D

  • Comment removed

  • Just add a buffer at the beginning of your signal chain, and at the end of your chain (optional) to keep your tone!

  • Thanks for the video: I know nothing about Wilco and know a lot about musician who took the time for you. I saw it was a long video and was stoked. So many of the rig rundowns are short. Thanks.

  • Shit I went to that gig, did't know that Rebecca Dirk was there.

  • 24:56 I do care, awesome tip!

I could listen to Nels Cline talk for hours. It seems true that real guitarists play real guitars. This guy's an inspiration.

  • Rosewood Jazzmaster.... GORGEOUS !

  • couldn't he just get his rosewood Jazzmaster from the Custom Shop? pretty sure they would have done it :)

  • 38:33 minutes enjoying Rebecca Dirks
