  • a songand aman that altered the course of my life. Brings a tear to my eye.

Is he playing a nylon string?

  • @PowerHed Check out robert Johnson, skip james or just go to en.wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/List_of_Delta_blues_musicians

  • M A S T E R P I E C E.

  • I agree.. no translation needed!

  • gave me shivers

  • he said "lil town" the translation said "no town" wtf? lol.....no translation needed please. this is how english is supposed to be spoken.

  • I agree.. no need for translation!

  • @canadawhtgrl

john lee already translated everything that needs to be said here

  • indescrivibile.

  • WOW. nothing more to be said.

  • Real music!

  • Too many guitarists are mechanical/mathematical technicians and don't know how to be artists. JLH shows the way.

  • @jiros00 That's well said.

  • the translation is off at some points.

  • at first i thought he was reliving the time during the flood in his mind.

when he plays this song, he is Tupelo.

  • makes those hairs on the back of ur neck stand up wow

  • wow...i find it sad that someman feels this man's voice needs subtitles to be understood. Not only that, but they get em wrong in several places.

Clearly a man who need subtitles to understand this man tongue shouldn't be doin the transcribing.

  • @mcblah Or maybe this was just taken from the uploader's dvd with subtitles on as he's a not a native speaker?

  • @yatah never said it was done by the uploader. just said it was a shame is all.

  • @mcblah Can you read? Your comment just makes no sense. There's nothing sad about subtitles. It's all in your head.

The subtitles are most likely there because the uploader needed them to fully understand what an English speaker was saying as he's from Slovakia. It has nothing to do with JLH's hooker voice/accent.

  • @mcblah subtitles are useful for someone who isn't English mothertongue like me

  • @mcblah Ok...Some of us are not native english speakers...

  • @mcblah subtitles are great for people that don't speak English as their native language. I introduce America music to my Taiwanese students as much as I can and with subtitles they can appreciate such soulful lyrics. "That" is when they are useful.

    Enjoy. :}

  • The words aren't for native English speakers. The Blue's and John Leee Hooker are deeply respected and studied around the world. Seeing the lyrics while hearing the timing of the song helps understand the artform that much better.

  • @SeattleJohnK the point is the words are wrong. Those words on the screen are not the words Mr. Hooker is singing in a lot of cases.

  • EVERLASTING !!!!!

  • Addendum: I'm from Tupelo and my ancestors have lived here since the turn of the 20th century. They know (and did EXPERIENCE) the cataclysmic early half. It's a tough country, but (as always) things are never as they seem in the cultural pantheon of "The Blues".

  • Tupelo wasn't involved in the '27 flood. I concur this was a tragedy, but Tupelo didn't take the hit. Fast forward to '36 and the 'Great Tornado'.....you've got something else. John Lee took some artistic license here, admittedly. It's potent pathos mixed with mythos and some low-register guitar licks that elevate the allegorical tale....apocryphal stuff.

  • This is simply what the blues is all about; a voice, a guitar and a story that moves you. Fantastic...

  • nobody hums like john lee hooker.

  • Hey john, Tabs?

  • love this so much! and I'm just a kid x)

  • Tupelo Mississippi is beautiful. And he can take you home!

  • bezo1981

  • he's a saint

  • got the honor to be able to see him at The 86st in Vancouver B.C. when he was 82 what a showman he was the best

  • @bigjeff1963 JLH may well have been 87 years of age depending on whether he played the show after his August 22 birthday. His year of birth has usually been credited as 1917, but I recently located some census records that give his year of birth as 1912. While census records are not primary sources of birth information, the one I found is the only evidence so far found as to JLH year of birth. No other record exists. See his Wikipedia entry footnote on date of birth.

  • fantastic version... give me the thrills !!!

  • A voice as deep as the ocean, like the rumble of a train at midnight, guitar notes in counterpoint to voice, like the beat of raindrops...

  • very fine performance, thanks for this video.

  • white people just can't do the blues right.

I really like the bluesy sound of the black keys, the doors, jack white and some led zeppelin tunes... but no one does it like these legends do.

  • @Maynard0504 stevie ray tin pan alley nuff said

  • Elvis was born there (1935), but he didn't die there...

Still he knew about the great flood (1936)

Perhaps a small influence on the great career ahead.

I bought this record (in the late 50s) unheard and without knowing anything about John Lee Hooker. I wanted it because I knew that's where Elvis was

    born.

I've been hooked on John Lee Hooker ever since

  • Love this guys' music! He is an American treasure.

  • play in the sky ...play in the water.....play in the wind.....play in my heart

  • So much raw power & emotion... He's just talking and personifying his voice through the guitar! He may be dead, but his music will live until the end of time!

  • Word. JOhn lee HOoker speakin gospel! What an angel! (HUG AND LOVE BEYOND THE GRAVE!!!) Happy Halloween John Lee Hooker

  • That´s immortal music. This cannot be played by anybody else except John Lee Hooker. I´m practicing this song and to be honest the most difficult thing to do of this song is to express the feelings. The technic is piece of cake but the emotions - John Lee Hooker is incredible. To my own opinion I would say that people shouldn´t play this song if they can´t get an emotionally connection to it or won´t try.

Qoute: "Blues is easy to play but hard to feel" - Jimi Hendrix

  • The flood was in 1936 in Tupelo. One of my favorite JLH tracks. Perfect. Thanks for putting it up.

  • I have a version of this recoreded at a club around the time Elvis died and JLH dediecated this song to Elvis as he was Born in Tupelo. Great Track

  • How could you possibly NOT like that?!

  • Are the subtitles really necessary? Could it be any simpler to understand?

  • i wanna beable to play like like that.i wish

  • 7 ppl need to be taken out the back and given a "musical education"

  • simplicity at its best!

  • Lord, yes.

  • Here he is very old.. but incredible blues of 1995 ...

  • anyone knows his tuning?

  • @satelnikolas I believe he has it tuned to D G E B A D with the low E string tuned down to D1

  • @satelnikolas

    I think it's dropped half a step on all strings from regular tuning: E A D G B E

  • @DiceEsque

I believe the tuning is a whole step down from standard tuning.

    D G C F A D

  • it makes the caver story alot scarier than it normally, just that long riff.

  • Listen THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

The rock nation will be attacking Justin Biebers BABY video

on September 1st onward ... Remember to dislike, put a comment and flag on the baby vid on sep 1.

We need your help to destroy this modern autotune music that

has ruled the world. Copy paste this comment on every good music

video such as: Metallica, Dio, AC/DC, led zep, the doors, Beatles,Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, hendrix, wolfmother,

Guns n' Roses, etc. PS: RIP John Lee Hooker

  • @MrWhupass360

That's ridiculous. I don't like Justin Biebers music but what does stooping to that level prove, even if it will work?

You've not come to the right place for this "rock-nation".

  • @MrWhupass360 Just ignore the beeb.

  • Wow, aspiring guitarists take note. He never left the first position of the fretboard.

    Subtlety, sometimes less is more.

  • @dmanc1 Actually I beg to differ on one thing. He moved all over the first few frets as you can see during the solo and the base riff immediately following. However your point remains. Subtlety and passion can sometimes show the most masterful side of your craft. Some times you need a hammer and others you need a feather. The true greats know which to use when.

  • @kicksit1980 Agreed, and thanks for pointing my slip up during the solo and base riff.

  • it´s embarrasing how people keep searching a better quote to throw and be the most voted on the videoclip page.

light down your lights.... just listen to the music.

  • @eldher01 This is the greatest quote in the history of youtube.

  • Never heard this before.

    Wow.

  • @Bashfullbeauty760 you are a true idiot, cut off your ears you aint using them

  • It wasn't "one FRIGHTENEN' evening", it was "one FRIDAY evening"

  • real music will live forever

  • If this song doesn't move you, you have no soul

  • Foda!

  • The flood as told by the negro man.

  • genius.

  • simplicity is perfection. john lee hooker, our master.

  • This is real music. RIP John Lee Hooker

  • One frighten evening...LMAO, it's one FRIDAY evening...sheeeesh....

  • give this man a guitar and a pair of shoes and he could make one of the best songs we all love listening to.

  • Man, that's the deepest blues ever in the history of mankind. Just amazing and haunting. You can feel the blues is in his soul and his voice and his guitar. To communicate something that deep is the real deal no doubt. Scary man just scary good, RIP John, your music will live forever!

  • Haunting and Beautiful

    Long Live John Lee Hooker!

  • Smooth voice....very nice.

  • amazing, so simple and so beautiful.

  • JOHN amca ruhun şad olsun

  • Guy looks like a bat

  • Beautiful.

  • truly amazing

  • Eres todo un maestro hooker!!

  • Hooker and that foot-tap metronome. One solid dude.

  • Does anybody know which guitar is John Lee Hooker playing in this video (brand/model)? I would be very grateful to anyone who could share info

  • first time i heard this song, id rather listen to this than the music these days. music lost the feeling, thats why i love blues even when im in a good mood.

  • That's where people are mistaken. The Blues is about something negative but it brings positivity. I always feel good when I listen to the blues.

  • A perfect example of a truly great human being. This performance is so very good, so deep and stirring. A real class act, long live John Lee Hooker.

  • To beleieve in mankind you should watch and hear this Man.

  • i love the whole song but especially from 3:13

you can really feel his pain i guess when he says: 'it rained, rained, rained both night and day'. Beautiful...

  • MAGICAL!!

  • Legendary, I loved him and listened to him growing up even when I was 13-14. My brother would be like "you're a teenager why are you listening to heavy stuff like the blues?" , so I'd be like "i get what he's saying, I feel him" you know.

  • Lovee his music

    RIP John

  • THANK YOU ....MUCH LOVE

  • Its like hearing an ancient sage tell a story...your transfixed and can't help but listen. He re-did this in the soundtrack for the movie Hot Spot with Miles Davis as accompaniment, track titled Murder.

  • its his voice mann. his voice. What a great song. no other artist has ever been able to put so much emotion in his voice. His voice relives what happened. superb...

  • I agree ,i have always said it was his voice. Even his name is cool.

  • This is amazing. JLH said he got his style from his stepfather, but I'd bet that sound is thousands of years old. You can hear singers in Ghana who sound a lot like him. Anyone who hears this music knows it's for real, we just have it in our blood to know the difference between the real blues and blues-for-entertainment.

  • amazing

  • thats god given right there mothafucker

  • how old was he that time

  • praise the lord

  • Then don't watch it.

    Idiot.

  • thats a need moda fucking song

  • Blues so deep it makes me want to leap off a bridge. Great song anyway.

  • Blues doesn't get better than this!!

  • I don´t know what to call to this perfomance, I´m sorry about that day in Tupelo !...

    Thabk you bezo1981

  • Great RIP John

  • The upcoming artist could learn something from this man...just sing...dont try to sing, just do it
