From the news footage, it seems to me that the pilots, and the crew cheif, were doing some real-deal "big building" stuff. Skyscrapers create their own weather and wind patterns. If they are doing a personnel recovery in some trouble spot dotted with your garden variety sky scrapers, then this is perfect. Glad some 1 star had balls enough to ask for it. As for police support, probably needed PD Air to keep the news choppers far enough away to be safe. LA news outlet's air units have balls!

My last duty station was 29 Palms ATG. There's a MOUT town of sorts that involves hyper-realistic immersion (minus real ammunition) complete with actual locals (some amputees of the fighting from Afghanistan) ANA and everything else you described. It has to at least match the one in Pendleton. There's also smaller ones scattered around the HUGE training area thats outside of 29 Palms that resemble markets, what typical neighborhoods would look like etc.The immersion center includes all of it.

Plus you have to take into account the variations in weather patterns, elevation, etc. From the pictures I've seen of Irans urban centers, they share some similarities with the the layout of LA minus the huge mountains in the background.
