When I was a youngster, the volunteer f.d. use a similar siren, which was on top of the hose tower. Above the siren was a small red light that worked during and just after the siren blew. I did see inside the fire station the talgo switch that summoned the volunteers. Now the FD is mostly paid and are summoned via 911 call center.
I wouldn't doubt if it was rigged. We have so many of these types of sirens (STH-10s) in our area that they probably wanted it to sound slightly different from the others. That's a total guess, of course!
The STH-10 was created in 1955 and this perticular one sounds like it was made between 1959 to 1978.

Nope, It was rigged by all the Cement workers who used commercial timmers they had from work. It is crude but works.
