@william20100 Its about Jack Hall, and English robber, hanged in 1707. Ex Chimney sweep. First recorded as being a popular song in London in the 1720s.
if i remember rifght seamus largey was killed by acar when he was changing apuncture at the corner of kennedway west belfast i stand to be corrected it was that long ago the death of a tue hero god bless seamus go to sleep comrade away with tom williams bobby sands and francie hughes
May the workin class men of all unite again......we're living in squailer again because of the bosses and the banks.....God Bless all working people.....
My favorite version of Sam Hall! The way Eamon spit the words out really sounded like a guy going to the gallows - and daring to damn all the spectators! No soulful ballad here - just a great taunt! Eeamon - wish you were still with us...
Great to know the stories behind the songs. This has got to be the best version of Sam Hall ever. Eamon / Flying Column, really nailed it. Thanks folks for the tunes and stories!
thanks a million for putting this and other Flying Column songs up,I was brought up with these songs in the background. What a great voice the man had.
To think that the music that the Column played was illegal still makes me laugh even though there were those who wanted the group silenced they ended up without a voice. To this day as we can see the songs of a few can endure not only time but the might of an empire! Only two words are neeeded......
We used to listen to the Flying Column when we were coming through the brit barracks (getting our car searched) on our way back to the north years ago! My da always made sure they heard it too.
@boldfenianlad I have just come to this great group & love the sound but don`t know what you mean, why were they illegal,? I can guess but please inform me. Many thanks. I am english, not that that matters by the way.
By the way Ireland1,Our lads in Crumlin jail is a good song writen by Dessie Gillespi the owner of the old Golden Jublie in Cromac st,he handed it to us one night on a auld bit of paper and after going over it a few times Cathleen sung it on stage, wee played there for years every Wedensday night. Benny.
Thanks to Tony and Benny for that info. Those are the type of stories that make a song (and album) even better. Keep 'em coming, I'll post Crumlin Jail soon but I'm busy watching the greatest team in the world getting beat at the minute :-(
Hi, I'm Benny, Banjo,Mandolin, player,Flying Column. My mate Tony Lynch rang me up to tell me about,ANYBODY AT THE DOOR,well your lucky you never heard the bits we took off.
That LP was recorded in two nights, Thursday for side one, and Friday night for side two.
What our young people don't know is,singing rebel songs in those days was breaking the (LAW) LOL.
Good job machree01 good to see people pushing Irish music without trying to make money out of it. mni tks Benny.
When Eamon sings he puts everything into it, as if he where the person in the song, any song. When you listen to the song you will hear a person say "anybody at the door" at 18-19 seconds
I have the album that was bought in the 70s, and i listen to it every so often, i think he talks on, but you cannot make him out because of Eamon singing. Maybe Tony would know more about.
Hi, that voice on the Sam Hall track is the studio producer. He heard banging on the main door of the studio and he thought it was the brits coming to arrest the group again!!!
This version isn't that great.

The banjo sounds exactly like Barney McKenna´s on the Dubliners version of that song. Are you sure it isn´t Barney himself?
