Alex To was born and raised in Hong Kong to a Filipino father and a Shanghainese mother. In 1980, at the age of 18, he studied abroad in Vancouver,Canada majoring in commercial design. In 1985, at age 23, he graduated from university and worked as an Art Director back in Hong Kong. That same year, he entered the 4th annual New Talent Singing Awards and won first place (the Gold Award). He was then signed to Capital Artists and began his career in the music industry.

Sometimes people that are full chinese look half. I have a friend, she doesn't look chinese at all. She looks like some sort of European heirtage, but she's full chinese. I think it's just the genes. Some of my friends have different color hair like red when they're full chinese. But she doesn't have to be chinese to be in the music video.

Yeah. I have full chinese with blonde hair, brown hair and white hair. Trust me. Both her parents are from China and still in China. She came over with her auntie's family. I was French Baiding her hair for her and I've found every natural color hair on her head. And my other friend has natural red hair. It's long to her but and if you look closely you can see gold or yellow on the red. But only soemtimes.
