  • if you do this it's also a good idea to make it so the engine doesn't fire. remove the fuel inj fuse, disable the ignition system, etc

  • nice trick

  • Ever screwed up the starter or crank doing that?

  • @jermark8 NO, just NEVER put it on an engine that spins the wrong way.

  • what if you got a crankshaft turning towards counterclock wise

  • @blackwaltz13 then you have to use an impact wrench to get it off, or lock the flywheel with a tool and use the cheater bar.

  • @scottykilmer yea, i used flywheel method but when i was tightening the crankshaft pulley i didn't jam the flywheel so it wasn't tightened properly and a month later the key was destroyed that sits in the inside and scratched the inside of the crankshaft and it wobbled, I put a steel piece of metal to substitute the key and the gap left, and its day 3. im wondering whether if its okay to leave it like this, or buy a new crankshaft pulley with the key? it seems normal atm

  • @blackwaltz13 if it doesn't wobble, it should be ok like that as long as the steel is in there tight enough

  • what a boss trick (buh dum psssh)

  • Sweet car scotty.I assume thats yours? If so,don't be afraid to let people know,as i'm sure you worked very hard in life. How you liking it?Heard of timing chain ticking noises on the new 5.0s but not sure if there having problems with the Boss 5.0s.That Boss pretty fast?It handle good?Love the new mustangs.

  • @94vettelover2 mine for a week, I road test em. Was fast and fun for a week though.

  • Do the Pulleys bolt on the to harmonic balancer?

  • @KreatorOfDeath1985 that pulley IS the harmonic ballancer.

  • @scottykilmer

My engine has a harmonic balancer with NO pulleys on it, 1970's small block 350

i dont really understand the whole concept, there are bolt holes in the balancer so im guessing pulleys bolt ONTO it?

  • @KreatorOfDeath1985 yes, someone put an aftermarket racing ballancer on it then, the holes are to bolt pulleys on

  • @scottykilmer Oh cool

your a great help dude love your videos!!!!

Does this mean i must use a long style water pump>?

  • all that crap in and on the thermostat housing did no look to healthy.

  • How do you keep the car from starting with this method? Extensive damage seems likely should the vehicle start.

  • @trenchfoe you can remove the spark plug leads if you want, but a quick bump of the key won't start a car. you just bump the key on, then quickly turn the key to the off position.

  • @scottykilmer Thank You for the timely response. I learn the most from RichPin, Eric the Car Guy and of course you. You three have inspired me to begin producing my own auto repair videos. You are awesome!

  • Smart, never thought of that.

  • come out of a car!!!

  • one time i was driving...then BANG..there was my hamonic balancer rolling in front of my car that i was driving. lol it snaped off.

  • Scotty,

What size air compressor do you have ??

  • @brandon1997bmx 3 hp 21 gallon twin cylinder campbell hausfield I bought used thirty years ago for a hundred bucks and it's still humming.

  • How about a tip for screwing the bolt back in

  • @triumph209 that's the hard part, cause to do it right you have to lock up the flywheel with a special tool. Or, you can put some locktite on the bolt first, then just doing it by hand with the cheater bar and socket will make it plenty tight when the locktite dries.

  • Hey Scotty, I've been looking for a website that might sell that crankshaft pulley puller tool and I can't find one anywhere. Do you know where I might be able to buy one online?

  • @doctoroctagonaBLARGH tons of places, try harbor freight tools

  • you smoke to much weed

  • @TheOnlyMXRider not in many decades . that was university days.

  • Comment removed

  • THANK YOU! SCOTTY! DID THIS TRICK TODAY! AND WORKED LIKE A CHARM! YOUR THE BEST!

  • @scottykilmer where is the oilf filter located on a 1991 Fold 3.8 liter v6 continetal?

  • What if your pulley doesn't have the bolt holes? I used a 2 arm puller to get mine off but now can't figure out how to push it back on.

  • @morcheebix you just whack it back on with a mallet and a block of wood.

  • You are the best Scotty!!

    Thank you for your videos!

  • ...or you could attach a nice long pipe to that breaker bar.

  • @jjenson2006 or your engine would just keep turning over no matter what you use

  • @twiztid526 but you wouldn't need to crank the engine if you attached a pipe to the breaker bar....that was my point. :)

  • cool idea, thanks!!

  • Scott is it necessary to disable the ignition system before doing this?

  • @MrRosskidd you can if you're worried, but me, I have the touch and just turn it enough to break the bolt free.

  • @MrRosskidd i would think so..just unplug the coils and/or injectors

  • Reminds me of using a small socket extension to pop the knuckle off the front end of a Cherokee. Just set..and turn the wheel and POP!

  • God bless you Scotty. For always speaking the truth on things!

  • Scott you need a main website and a paypal donation on the site.

Even if you dont need the money you can always donate it to something worth while.

  • @beatzfromchicago just keep watching my videos and the ads on them, google pays plenty when you have 9 million viewers watching them all the time.

  • @scottykilmer theres no ad on this video!

  • @FrenchValleyAirport ; There is now...

  • @TheForza1000 no there isnt??

  • The trick worked for me !

An easy way to tighten up would be great.

I was thinking by blocking the flywheel or something ?

    Thanks allot !

  • @FidaPr yes, remove the starter and put a pry bar on the flywheel teeth.

  • hi, Scotty. i actually have a question. i have a 98 acura cl crankshaft bolt is different. The bolt seems longer for that particular car. do you think i might need a crankshaft pulley holder and then do the same exact method what your doing? i wish you can help! thanks

  • @Darkmand8 yep, you can get a holder for that, makes it easy.

  • well, how do you tighten back on scotty?

  • @Darkmand8 I often put lock tite on and use a socket and cheater bar and let it dry an hour before driving.

  • Scotty Rules!!!

  • Mr. Kilmer, sir, Reading in the service manual for my Honda civic, I get the impression that the crankshaft-pulley-bolt should be FASTENED with a specific amount of torque. It says to tighten the bolts to 20 newton-metres, mark the bolt with a marker, and turn it an additional 90 degrees.

Now, forgive me if I have misunderstood, but how does one go about calibrating the amount of torque applied? And since it appears that you do not worry about said procedure, is it at all important?

  • @TeamBadGuys pretty much impossible to use a torque wrench on that civic as the bolt will just move as you turn the wrench. I use an air impact and put em on tight, Never had a problem that way.

  • @scottykilmer its a 97 hatchback if that makes any difference. Manual says: "Do not use an impact wrench when installing" Also theres no way to get an air impact down there.

Are you saying is that the torque doesn’t matter if you just get enough of it?

Will the bolt move if I park it in gear? (I mean "not neutral")

And thank you very much for your video, tips and replies.

  • @TeamBadGuys Well screw the manual, that's what I've done for forty four years with no problems, you don't want that bolt falling off . It will still move in park somewhat, you'[d have to lock the flywheel to keep it from moving using a flywheel locking tool.

  • @scottykilmer Allright and Thanks a bunch, sir, you have no idea how much I appreciate what you said. I hate that damn manual.

  • What a funny video. Great trick to take the bolt off. only a seasoned mechanic knows little tricks like that. I totally dig to dramatic presentation of the material. Its a riot.

  • You, are the best!!!!!!!

  • .......scotty PLEASE look at this video on my page called (93 honda civic water pump problem) i am doing my timing belt job and ran into a small problem trying to install the new water pump PLEASE HELP thanks!......PLEASE PLEASE

  • @puresnowman01 you can just put sealer on the gasket and bolt it on, those are only line up plugs anyway, you can do without em if you can't get em out. I often pull em out when they're rusted and leave em out.

  • Ive been doing this "trick" for years. One thing about this technique is the danger associated. In my 25 years of mechanic work, I once had a breaker bar snap up and cause me to get 3 stitches in my eyelid. I could've lost an eye, but I got lucky. I now do this "trick" with extreme caution, and you should warn others as well that if they perform this stunt to be prepared for possible devastating consequences.

  • @bender2k1 can't happen to me, I crank from inside the car, as I work by myself. I assume someone else cranked it for you.

  • @scottykilmer Your right, I do this sometimes with an assistant. Sometimes you get those deep crank pully's that the socket might fall off of even before you can hit the starter. Therefore, I now use my foot to hold the socket on while my assistant bumps the starter.

  • Just put the thing in gear.... I find my 4 way makes the best cheater bar ever.

  • @easydoz1 can't do that in an automatic transmission, and that's what most people drive these days. Scotty

  • This method only works if the crankshaft sprocket has a woodruff key, on cars that havn´t got it it almost all newer cars e.g., Renault, peugeot, would be disasterous! Because there´s nothing tha holds the sprocket.

  • I've done this trick for years and it works perfect every time.

  • Scotty !!! you are the one that the whole world need. I really appreciate what you have done.

  • no fuckin way dude!!! i changed my crankshaft pulley and my timing belt in my B20B1 in my 99 civic... good effin god.. what a task.. that is the best piece of advice i have ever read..

  • Sctoy! U rock! i had a such a headache with doing this and u helpped me so well!!! And the guy that says not to share this tricks i gready for sure! If i had money i wouldnt care to spend so much time and get my self dirty! So thank u from all of people u helped!

  • How do you torque it back up?

  • @5cylcoupe you hit the cheater bar with a hammer as hard as you can. I will often put some thread sealant on the threads before doing that to ensure it stays on. 'the regular running of the engine does tighten it up though, due to it's angle of rotation. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Thread sealant on the thread? I wouldn't like to be the one that needed to remove the crank bolt next time!

  • scotty thank you so much for this! at tech school, we cant take it off with an impact because it wont budge even with that! i cant wait till monday to do this and get it done as quick as you always do. scotty, we have this engine totally tooken apart and stuff. does it matter? as long as the starter has power but everything is all apart can i do this???????

  • @re3rocks69 you can try, but if the engine is all taken apart, locking the flywheel should be easy enough to do to keep the crank from turning, then you should just be able to use a long cheater bar to remove it. Scotty

  • hey that is the oldes trick of the world like prostitution so, stop giving away secrets to dummies mr.Scotty that why we have mechanic shop and garages for repairs that make money for living

  • @wall4xxx don't be so greedy. Scotty

  • cool

  • Hey Scotty, 4th gear on my car went out and I don't know how to fix it, and I don't want to spend 1000 dollars if I don't have to. When it goes into 4th, the RPM's shoot up and you can hear the engine grinding. What's wrong with it?

  • Comment removed

  • uhh!! (1 second later) and off it comes!!! lmfao, helpful and funny

  • Thanks Scotty!

  • So u mean get it to tdc and mark the crankshaft pulley, and just adjust the timing to how the car runs? It is an old truck tho. Its one of those old ones that you just cant part with lol!

  • @nico27004 yes, Scotty

  • i was going to change my distributor. i wanted to know how do i know what to set the timing too if my repair manual doesnt say. i know to get it to tdc before i remove it, but when i put the distributor back on i dont know what i should set my timing too. do you have any suggestions? i have a 1984 toyota pickup 22re engine. Do i time it according to how the car runs or is the a set timing i sould do?

  • @nico27004 that old thing, just mark it with paint and put it back the same. Then you can fool with it a little if need be to make it run best. A timing light is useless on that old thing, the timing chain will be worn anyway so the marks wont' be right. Scotyt

  • Hey Scotty Kilmer I'm having a problem with my truck delay shifting it sometimes does not shift over it gos glug glug glug glug glug around about 35 miles an hour up hilll then the transmission will sometime make a very silent skitting sound but if i take my foot off gas then press it again it shifts over do i need to adjust my kick down? also when its coming up a strip at about 45-55 MPH sometimes it does the same thing glug glug glug light skitting sound then i take my foot off and it shifts

  • @chamblizi rarely do the kick downs need touching, that's more often a tranny wearing out inside. Try changing the filter and fluid and put fully synthetic fluid in and a quart of lucas tranny additive and see how it acts after 250 miles of driving. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer kk thank you

  • i need to come by and have you teach me the ways of repair. To carry on your legacy!! hahaha

  • at first i thought they were the gear teeth but i dont think those are magnetic, and also the damper has slidght groves from where im guessing the chain would rub? Let me know please. and any other tips on doing this. Thanks A lot Scotty!

  • hey again Scotty. I have a question. I have removed the timing cover, i didnt know you have to remove the inlet pipe from the motor in order to remove the cover but i did and its off, Now how do i proceed in removing the camshaft bolt? its a 23-25mm socket size bolt, even when i get the socket and breaker bar.torque wrench, how will i be able to remove that bolt to change the sprokets and chain?(other details: when i took off the cover i found like 2 small chipped magnetic pieces....

  • @CODxFUNxMAN You don't want metal pieces falling out, something inside is seriously damaged. I would advise having a mechanic at least look at it for you before you put it back on with serious internal damage. But any worn parts like the chain damper will need replacing now. scotty

  • @scottykilmer The small pieces were on the timing coveri was thinking maybe they are from the cover. I mean the engine didnt sound that bad. Only the rubbing noise but that was coming from the timing chain side.

  • @scottykilmer Oh that doesnt sound good. thats what i was going to do anyways ive been calling my machanic letting him know what ive done and asking him if its ight. so ill bring him a video tomorrow. I hope its nothing bad. And there should be alota slack after i remove the tensioner right?

  • @CODxFUNxMAN a reasonable amount of slack,. Scotty

  • Respond to this video... Thanks Scotty!

  • thank you.... <3

  • you sound like joe pesci from casino

  • @FrancescotheTank ghahahahaahahhaahahhahah

  • Hey Scotty I sometimes have problems with customers who don't want to pay extra because they say I broke something while I was working on there car. But actually it was because the part was old and it was already broken. How can I make them pay for the extra parts? 'Cause sometimes I have to pay from my own pocket and I don't make a profit.

  • @freack201 That is a generic business question, and I've encountered this in I.T. One of the most shocking ones for me was trying to fix a computer with a bad power-supply and a relatively routine minor cleanup. When powered up the second time, the hard drive failed. It was just incredibly bad luck, but it failed on the bench. Fortunately we backed up the data first. We went back to the customer and explained what had happened, but thankfully they didn't have a problem paying for the new drive.

  • @freack201 What you need to do, is cost in your labour appropriately. Some jobs are going to just be nightmares and a sometimes a break-even proposition. Explain to the client what you did for them, and they should appreciate this, they will hopefully recommend a friend, and you will gain a reputation as an honest mechanic, which brings you a lot more business long-term. I (and most people) would rather go to an honest mechanic that charges a bit more, than someone who will take shortcuts.

  • I was told a 3 jaw 5 ton pulley is better than the standard.

  • Scotty I am trying to work on a 2000 Honda CRV that broke its timming belt. But in order to replace the belt i need to get the frount cranks shart dampner off. This thing takes a special tool as i have been told. But i can not locat the tool any place. No part store can help me. Where can I get this tool? Is there an alternative? please help me i need to get this fixt asap!!!!

  • @bmaiceman yea, use an air impact wrench, they take em right off. If you don't have that, you will need the tool or will have to lock up the flywheel be removing the starter and jamming a big screwdriver on the teeth to keep it from moving, and will need 2 guys for that. Scotty

  • PPLS TAKE NOTE SOME CARS THIS CANT BE DONE FOR EXAMPLE if the engine turns clock wise you can do this i do it a lil bit different then scotty i use floor to do it i use a longer breaker bar to do this instead of putting it on anything on the engine but none the less this a great trick its oldschool and i love it and im a newschool mechanic but i have mad props for oldschool techniques. so RIGHT ON SCOTTY!!

  • Great tip Scotty! But I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but I would disconnect the ignition, or something to prevent the engine from starting while breaking the crankshaft bolt loose. Other than that, great tip!

  • Mr. Scotty, I have a 94 nissan pickup with vg30e engine. I was driving down the road and the truck died. I checked everything and found that the distributor seized up and truck will crank but not start. Will a seized distributor cause timing to jump, or the camshaft to break? I tried another distributor, but it sill will not start? Please help!

  • @TheStpeteboy pull the distritbutor out first, it's driven by the timing belt or chain. It may be fine, but the chain or belt has broken. That's most common, when they break, the dist stops turning. When you crank the engine, see if the rotor is spinning in the dist. A distributor rarely can break anything but itself. Scotty

  • Cool :-)

  • Hey Scotty and I tighten it up the same way ?

  • @FredSolomon no, that spins to take if off. You have to tighten it by hand then whack the cheater bar with a sledge hammer to tighten it. But realize it tightens itself as you drive , as it's a right hand thread. Scotty

  • Neat trick. Will remember it if i don't have the special tools at the shop.

  • different problem ? can you reccommend a product to put into my engine oil to help seal a leaky oil pan gasket ? I have a 1994 ford truck F 150 4x4 5 speed manual trans. others tell me i will have to lift the engine about 6" to remove the oil pan ? I want to avoid this if i can . your Thoughs ????

  • @Garybe441 If it's a pan leak, it must be repaired with a new gasket. If it's a seal leak, AT 205 can fix it. Scotty

  • Hey Scotty! Love your videos but I just did a timing belt and was scared to use that method to remove the crankshaft pulley because I thought it may cause damage to the front/rear main seal to put that kind of impact on the crankshaft. Have you ever caused a main seal leak from doing this??? Thanks in advance

  • @ronjohn862000 No, it can't hurt the seals as the shaft stays in place, just the tightening bolt moves. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer WOW ultra fast response! dude you rock! Thanks so much

  • hey scotty do you think it would be a good idea to do this when the engine by itself is sitting on the ground in my back yard right now? i will just hook it up to a live battery? like... it wouldnt cause the engine to start fliping like mad would it?

  • @davidzzz94 Na, it might work, sounds logical, though I've never done that as I have impact air tools to do it with when it's out of the car.Scotty

  • @scottykilmer Where there any simptoms of that bad crank pulley?

Or did the belt just slipped off?

  • @jvsee12345 It overheated as the fan belt couldn't move the water pump. Then the pump started leaking from getting too hot. Scotty

  • Cool :-)

  • I hope ypu did the timing belt?????????????

  • @TheOutwiththeold na, the belt was less than a year old. Scotty

  • That is a nice trick. One question for you Scotty, is that your new Mustang Boss 302? Nice stang!

  • excellent tip. need more of those type of tips.

  • scotty...im trying to find out the year of a chevy custom deluxe i want to fix. do you know any websites that I can use that will give me the info on a truck with 13 vin numbers....here it is .....if maybe you can work your magic. ty scotty

    CCU449S187776.....ty agian scotty

  • @betterman05 any dealer can tell you if you give them the vin numbers, they have it all on computers. Scotty

  • @betterman05 service.gm.REPLACE/dealerworld/vincards/pdf/vincard79.pdf Instead of REPLACE use com C=Chevrolet C=Conventional cab 106" U=5.0L,2BBL Carb 4=1/2 Ton w/Hydraulic Suspension 4=Cab & Pickup Box or Van with Hi-cube box 9=1979 S=ST. Louis Plant 187776=production sequence number Good luck.
  • @JunkmanJim your awesome JMJ...thank you kind friend!!!

  • Yep, that's the fastest way that actually works. I usually hold the bar with my both hands and have someone to crank the engine for me. If the bar slipped off the bracket, it may cause damage to the accessories on the engine.

  • @TutorialTipCom you're braver than me, you could get your hands ripped off with a tight bolt. sometimes the bolts are so tight I have to heat em up with my oxy acetylene torch. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer yeah! well, I slide the bar itself in a LONG pipe and hold the pipe from the top very tight. That gives me more leverage and also protect my hands since my hands will not be close to the engine. Sometimes the starter is so powerful that cranking the engine makes me let the pipe go lol. It does work really good. This kind of tricks are really good and save lots of time! Thanks,

  • @TutorialTipCom A good idea but a bit dangerous. Sometimes the crank bolt is so rusted on that you need either an extremely powerful air gun to take it off, or heat it with a torch before you attempt it. Holding a cheater bar while cranking the motor might end up with a few busted knuckles or broken fingers at best.

  • @eltrouble That's true, I usually inspect the bolt before doing any thing. In fact, I lock the flywheel and take the bolt out with a long ratchet and a pipe on it for more leverage if the transmission cover or the starter is out.

You know, it depends. I am hobbyist mechanic and work only on my cars. Few things I do a little different. Heating the bolt only (not the pully) helps breaking the rust, but again, this method is easier than taking the fan and radiator out to make room for an impact gun

  • @eltrouble Thanks! it was bad brake switch

  • @furqanrauf Awesome! I'm glad you found out what it was....and it's a pretty easy fix too.

  • get some gas in that boss buddy! you're 98 miles til "e"mbarassment! :)

  • wow you make these look easy i changed my timing belt and it was hard to align the pullies saw your video and it looked simple i wish i could make it simple got to do it again nice videos scotty keep them comming i watch all

  • can you please tell me how can I check why my brake lights stay on? and how can I fix it?

  • @furqanrauf check the brake fluid might have a leak on a brake line or even ABS pump

  • @SinBeatz1 I checked it I didnt see any leak what else could be the problem?

  • @furqanrauf Make sure the brake fluid level is at the max mark. If your car is 1995 or newer, you might have a code regarding the brake system. It could be an issue with the ABS system if you have one, or perhaps your parking brake sensor is staying on all the time. It could be a variety of things.

  • @eltrouble well brake fluid is not up to max and my car does not have ABS i think I have 98 nissan sentra. I do think brake sensor is staying on how can I be certain what is the problem?

  • @furqanrauf Well top off the fluid and check to see if the light goes away. If not, it's possible you have a faulty sensor. Disconnect the sensor, if the light goes away, you have a bad sensor. If not, check out the previous comment to see what your next step is. If it's a bad fluid level sensor, it's usually not worth it to replace, just keep an eye on your fluid levels.

  • what about using a two armed puller to remove it scotty?

  • Awesome. That's all I can say.

  • The Parthenon is looking clean these days.

  • Wouldn't this put excessive/dangerous stress on the starter motor?

  • @Commando303X A starter motor is a high torque short duty cycle motor and is pretty robust. It barely notices the additional load of breaking the bolt loose it's designed for high start up torque from a dead stop.

Short duty cycle means it's only meant to be run for a few seconds and it is then allowed to cool down. That's why when a car won't start it's recommended to not run the motor for more than 10 seconds so you don't over heat the motor and burn out the windings.

  • thats a easy fix. you could just put your car on the handbrake (manual car) and put it in gear.. the engine doesnt rotate .. and the bolt comes out

  • Comment removed

  • way awesome! thats even better than the impact wrench man. but, to get it back on.,.. you just saved me a buttload of time

  • very cool tip Thanks!!!

  • I'm so proud of myself cuz I figured out what you were gonna do before you told us (turning over the engine to loosen the bolt)

  • Hello, I have a problem with my diesel car that no mechanic has managed to figure what it is. I used diesel fuel with motor oil as a mixture (80:20) and since then my glow plugs keep burning out after ten days. I keep replacing the glow plugs and I even put fresh diesel in and the problem is still there. I have checked the timing of the relay and all is fine. I don't think that adding motor oil would have any effect on the glow plugs. I would appreciate it if you give me a reply.

    Thanks.
