I'm thinking about taking this mos.. I'm a laborer in a construction company, and I'd like to become a equipment operator.. Though it'll take many years before they'll let me, so I figure I might as well accelerate and take this mos and use the ait training to help..
@sombersolitude Then go to a community college & earn Associates in Civil Engineering. After 1st or 2nd term join the NG or Reserves & work for the same Army Corps of Engineers as a civilian making over 100k... Thats what my father did... People say this MOS is worth nothing to a certain degree its not true if you earn a Associates/BA/BS! My goal is to become a Engineer Officer in the NG & work for Army Corp Engineers as a Civilian. Ft Leonard Wood is boring as fuck
I am a female and I did this job for 8 years in the Reserves. When you are deployed or on AT, you will definitely get stick time on the equipment. But on drills? Forget it; you'll never get to work in your MOS.
This is My job, and i agree, the Equipment we get break down alot, but Caterpillar is giving the army an Ass load of new Loaders, Graders, and Dozers. But its a fun job i honestly enjoy it
We did alot of TDY Construction projects when i was stationed in Germany, most of my 3 years over there was spent on TDY....Love it!! got to travel to different parts of Germany staying 2-3 months at each place.
this was my MOS way back when i was in(late 80's) but it was 62E back then and Combat Engineer was 13B, they must have changed things up since i got out. Bucket Loader and Scraper were my favorites.
NOOO flipatit11. unless you enjoy this job prior to enteing the army do not count on doing it to often. and if your going airborne count on doing it never
Im leaving April 19th 2010 for BCT in Fort Leonard Wood. I also do my mos training for this mos there as well... Wish me Luck!! I'll be active duty for Army.
ait is at fort leonard wood in mo. it is 10 weeks plus two weeks after you graduate in a thing called bft which is battle focus training. its pretty cool though.ait is way better than basic but it was hot when i was there and some of the walks on ta 244 got a little sweaty. but overall its a kick ass mos. stay strong and motivated. And remember, FIRST TO FIGHT LAST TO FALL ENGINEERS DO IT ALL!!!!!!
Heard alot of changes came when they changed up the 21E series. How long is AIT now? I've heard about 6 weeks. No one seems to know. Has anyone went through AIT recently confirm or deny this?
Hah, my friend just graduated there. Said it wasn't that hard at all. But then again, it didn't get the nicknames "Slackson Jackson" & "Relaxin Jackson" for nothing. It should be a lot of fun minus the heat. I don't know where you're from, but 95 degrees is a lot worse than it seems with 90% humidity.
I'm a 21E. if you've never operated equipment before your not going to be able to go out and get a job doing this after going to ait. ait just gives you the basics for operating. by no means will you be able to go out in the civilian world and be a skilled operator.
But let's say you signed a 3 year contract. That's 9 weeks BCT & 12 weeks AIT, so 21 weeks of training (about 5 months). I get that AIT only teaches you the basics, but what about the 2 years, 7 months that you're actually working the job. Wouldn't that be something to take with with you to the civilian world? I'm not trying to argue, I really am asking because I'm considering this MOS & want to know if it will leave me with a hopeful civilian career if I don't stay in for 20 years.
@samburger077 yes the hrs on each equipment u operate will be logged and u take that to your local operating engineers union hall where youll be given cradit and be a journy man not a apprentices so get all the hrs u can and run as much diffrent pieces of equip u can
I'm an Engineer company commander. You can be sent anywhere. Join the Army because its the right thing for your life, not because of where you may or may not get sent.
This mos might not transfer to civilian, hydrolics license, but Army has the Helmut to hardhat program, that gets you in unions.Google it to find out more.

Oh, be advised: AIT for this MOS is in Ft. Leonard Wood, aka Fort Lost in the Woods. You'll see why. It's the most depressing place on earth.

this had nothing to do with a 21E light machine gun

Hence "Army MOS 21E". MOS = Military Occupational Specialty.
