I love this film, and Clark Gable's dance routine is hilarious. Thanks for posting it. I think a previous commentator who complains about the girl being out of step is not aware that she is supposed to be out of step.
Why did they change the lyric from "every Sunday evening" to "every Thursday" evening here? Was mentioning people having carefree, dissipated fun on a Sunday considered inappropriate for a movie released in the late '30s?
Clark Gable as always, handsome and dashing. Norma Shearer as much as I love her was way past the threshold of melodrama even moreso than her performance in "Strange Interlude" if you can believe that. However it's all so easily forgiven by the chemistry these two greats protrude on screen. Two of the greatest class acts whose likes we may never see again on screen .
@twilson11208 Her performance was intended to be a parody of Garbo's persona; that's why she has the overexaggerated accent and such. At first, I thought she just got carried away with the part, but after learning what her intention behind her performance was, it made a lot more sense. Great film either way!
@darkseaofempathy : Thank you for clarifying that up for me. I'll have to watch it again with that thought in mind. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film immensely, its just that I felt Norma really hammed it up to the point of annoyance, and I consider myself to be one of her greatest fans. I simply lover her. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to view this under a different light.
Harry Van was a thin part but Gable imbued it with terrific substance. When given a chance, Gable never hestitated to tweak to his own image, and he was obviously having a ball in Idiot's. His flat and knowing observations throughout the film are the perfect foil for the fakery required of Shearer to play Irene. The movie lacks pacing in spots, but despite director Clarence Brown, Gable and Norma's work keep the film fun to watch even 70 years later.
norma was being lighthearted, you know funny, your supposed to laugh

When Gable came out with that stick, I was terrified he was going to dance. Then he did. I was so scared I couldn't breathe. Yes, I'm serious.
By the way, the second girl from the left is totally out of step. See 1:12. Reminds me of that old Hollywood saying, "Who did she f*** to get a part?"

@drobin3149
She's actually supposed to be out of step. They're meant to be a not very good dance troupe.
