A vocoder takes external input (in most cases human voice) and modifies to sound like some electronic source (in most cases keyboards or guitars). So you sing into the vocoder and press a key on the keyboard, your voice sounds like the keys pressed. Not that you asked but, Auto-tune does pitch correction so you tell it what key you want to be in and it fixes it real time.
