I hear lots of people say "I normally hate country, but I like this" when referring to the "classics". I think the problem is that the country music of today is NOT country music. It is simply pop music... all frills and pretty bows and whistles...
While there is a fantastic underground bluegrass movement today it is the greats like Hank Williams and Bill Monroe that show what true country music is all about... simply put, it's just good damned music... No BS, just good songs and lots of heart.
@sqpnt .....i'm guilty of that. i was raised around this stuff and bluegrass. i actually like heavy metal, alternative, techno and stuff like that. look at my ID. i spelled it different, but that was the name of a rottweiler i had for a long time. i'd call for him and say "calliiiiiiiiijahhhhh" :0)

normally i hate country music completely but not with this this is by far my favorite song of this genre and is the only country song i listen to ... and i live in the middle of the country
If you ever see a girl you like, don't be like poor Kaw-liga, make a move on her fast before she disappears or some other guy steals her and you'll be regretting it for a long time. Then your heart really will feel like knotty pine. Life is just too short for this.
Because even if she says no, at least you'll know and you have some closure.

This was my dad's favorite song, for many years this was the song we played at midnight on New Years......... we would all get in a line and act like Indians. My Dad passed away In March 2011 and we played this song in the Hospital , at his bed side as he slipped through heavens gates. Miss you Dad!
Does anyone have this song, sung by Hawkshaw Hawkins? My mother had an album by Hawkshaw Hawkins with Kaw-liga on it, and I haven't been able to find it on YouTube.
@Isotec1 Maybe (although I'm not necessarily admitting it), but if Hank hadn't written it, Charlie couldn't have sung it. So, what's your point? Charlie's a better singer? Maybe (although I'm not necessarily admitting it), but Hank's probably a better songwriter. There's nothing wrong with liking Charlie's version better, but it's not necessary to dis Hank in the process.
The story Hank was told he had to create another song by the end of the week and when he passed a store he saw a wooden Indian standing by the door which gave him an idea which then created this song later on with Fred Rose in Nashville, Tennessee in 1952. It remained No. 1 on the Billboard Country chart for 14 weeks and reached No. 23 on the pop charts. The flipside, "Your Cheatin' Heart, remained No. 1 on the country chart for 6 weeks.
I was listening to this one day at school, and somone looked at my ipod and said "Why the hell are you listening to some guy from the 50's!?!?!?" And i said " Cause he was better than anyone who could walk the earth, along with Elvis and The Beatles. So flip off."
I've ALWAYS loved this song, I've been singing it since I was a little girl. And one night my daddy had me get up with his band and sing it with him. That's always been a great memory for me.
@haslakse Not true. That is your opinion and I respect that but Charlie Pride just sings it with loudness on the voice change at Kawliga. Hank's voice change is extreme and very people can do that and still control their voice. The same way with long gone lonesome blues. Only Hank can do that without sounding like Alfalfa. To be clear Charlie Pride is a great singer but with a different catalogue of songs.
I have listened to Kawliga hundreds of times and other country singers who have sang songs where they change their voice and to me it is obvious that Hank Williams on this song has the most controlled but yet intense voice change when he gets to the part where he sings the part of Kawliga. Charlie Pride does it but it is a drawn out Kawliga and not as radical a change in voice. Not taking anything from Charlie Pride but just simply put I like the intensity and raw feeling from Hank.
he was a pioneer for sure! it's the music that soths the soul, thats why there are so many upset and angry folks out there because today the music has no soul!!
i actually differ slightly. Hank Sr. was a better song writer but Hank Jr. was a way better singer. And I agree with bubbysaint123 this crap they play on the radio today sucks
Years and years ago I heard this live by Ronnie Milsap and it was incredible. He can really hold that last note especially. I was trying to find a recording of it.
I used to play this years ago, I do the vocals and guitar and harmonica in a rack for the fiddle part. I'm dusting it off so I can do it tonight. Great song!
After listening to all available versions I must say that I like this one the best. Listened to it as a small child, we would all sing along. Charley Pride is also very good, very close second, Johnny Cash third, H W jr just terrible.

Hank Williams' lyrics are pure poetry. This song and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" both exemplify excellence lyrically. The latter is one of the greatest lyrics ever written in the history of country or any other music that I've ever heard. This man was a national treasure.
This song is so politically incorrect. Gotta love the music of the 50s. Still a good tune. I look up to Hank a lot. I've spent the past few years churning out music as fast as possible. Check out my music videos to hear my songs!
used to listen to this over and over on 8-track in my grandparents '82 cordoba. nothing like it will ever be written again. so haunting and pleasurable at the same time. hank sr was the greatest male "country" singer/composer ever!!!
@sbvrt6913 thats no lie, u dont think about it at the time but then you see hoe wonderful your grandparents and what wonderful talent their generation had. I will miss mine.
this video proves the "accidental dislike" theory wrong! By now, somebody would have disliked this video on accident but no! Hank is just too good for that!
A question about Hank Williams and his music that I hope some Hank expert can answer. I know he wrote the lyrics, but did he also put the music to the words? Ive never known and am curious.
@paleboy1231 A lot of incredibly skilled and creative musicians could never read or write music. They just "played by ear" as the saying went. Just a few years ago I found out that there are several musically inclined people in our extended family. None of them can/could read or write music. A couple couldn't read or write words, either. :-O
@WaywardWind1 yes he did just like gduwen said. he is the true heart, and soul of country music!! that's why it makes me soooo mad when people say that george strait is the heart and soul of country cuz he's not. george is good, but he IS NOT the heart and soul of country. country was around long before he was. HANK SR. is the heart and soul of country music!!! peace to ya!!
@WaywardWind1 he wrote either cold cold heart or I'm still in love with you in the office of a record exect while his wife band and they guy went got coffee because the guy did not believe he had written the words and music to alln the songs how he got famous
grew up on old country hank was my granddaddy's favorite i thank him every day for geittin me hooked on real country im 23 all i liston to is old country and blugrass growing up in the mountains that all i knew and now im passing it down 2 my kids
This song inspired me to speak to my girl, cuz' I couldn't stand the thought that she would go away without knowing how I felt. Thank you, Hank, from the bottom of my heart! And thank you, keithandshawn, for the correct spelling, I had no idea.
I was born and raised in Montgomery, AL, about an hour away from the spot where the statue of Kowaliga (correct spelling of the name) stood for as long as I can remember (I'm 50). We had a cabin on Lake Martin about 4 sloughs away and went there all the time. Loved this statue as a little girl, and love this song.
@keithandshawn We don't have the original Kowaliga in our area (Utah), but we do have a wooden Indian figure in one of our area restaurants! It was a converted hot-springs-type resort. They had made it into a restaurant/bowling alley/import gift store, and in the foyer of the restaurant there stands our "Kawaliga"! I think of this song whenever I see it! :^)
This brings back fond memories of my childhood. Great song! Reminds me as well of my little sister's Golden Retriever, who was named after this song. He runs free in God's Country now...................
@CountryBoy749 I liked Charley Pride's also. He had fun with it. Some like Charley's better, but I think maybe he just had the benefit of better recording and familiarity with the song. Anyhow, both are good, I think.
Thank you, Buttontails. I can sit and listen to this music for hours on end. As the saying goes, they don't make'em like this anymore. In another 50 years, I seriously doubt people will be listening to what passes for country music today, but they'll still be listening and loving Hank and Patsy Cline and Bob Wills and Loretta Lynn and Sonny James and Johnny Horton and Tex Ritter and ..............
Yeah, the song is terriffic and Hank is at the top of his form, but listen to the fiddle! Of all country songs with fiddles, this one is the BEST. Does anyone know who playe the fiddle on this version? He was great and helped make the song a true classic.
The hitch in his voice is what he's famous more. When he says Kaw-Liga in the chorous the pitch changes in his voice and its absolutely breathtaking. Hank Sr. will be missed greatly. I'm glad Im young and I know who he is. I keep Country alive.
How about that voice change when he goes to Kawliga? I wonder how many people can do it that well. Can't be described. One thing also noted about Hank Williams is it is written and pretty much understood that not one word in all of his songs can be changed. They are perfect flow and all that good stuff.
Too bad we aint got country like this today. All we have left really is George Strait, and Alan Jackson. Hank Williams III is really kind of just dishing out insults left, and right, and making a bad name for himself. It's unfortunate he can't be a little nicer, and more appropriate in his music. He might be a bigger success if he could just be a little more polite, and a little bit less explicit. People want their singers to be good role models. Like Hank was.
dude, REAL musicians write about their life experiences, and all those insults and bad mannerisms from Hank III is because he was on the same record contract his daddy was and they fucked him around, that's mostly why he talks all that shit, and you wouldn't want your kids followin the way of an outlaw would you?
@dimebonics123 I happen to believe there are more civil ways to get a point across. I don't know if you ever thought of that. People who happen to handle anger, and not carry foolish pride that happens to be bigger than they are tend to be respected more.
Must have been, I went to his sons bar in Puryear Tn andwas thrown out at close for having to much fun, wish Hank Junior would have been there to set them straight.
@bubbysaint123 i am 17 years old. you would think im hooked to the new country today right? well the only country i like is old as anything. johnny cash hank williams sr hank williams jr charlie danials . the classic stuff
Thanks..

The greatest ever pioneer of country music - Mr. Hank Williams
datoobster75 1 year ago
@datoobster75 Your right but not just country. A huge influence to many generes of music throughout the 50's and 60's.
Chuckclc 1 year ago
Hank Williams' lyrics are pure poetry. This song and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" both exemplify excellence lyrically. The latter is one of the greatest lyrics ever written in the history of country or any other music that I've ever heard. This man was a national treasure.
speakwhnspkn2 1 year ago
This song is so politically incorrect. Gotta love the music of the 50s. Still a good tune. I look up to Hank a lot. I've spent the past few years churning out music as fast as possible. Check out my music videos to hear my songs!

Can someone upload the Doc and Merle Watson version of this song. I think it's on a record called '""2 Days in September" a fabulous recording.

used to listen to this over and over on 8-track in my grandparents '82 cordoba. nothing like it will ever be written again. so haunting and pleasurable at the same time. hank sr was the greatest male "country" singer/composer ever!!!

WaywardWind1 1 year ago 4
@WaywardWind1 He did both, that was why he was really a genius.

@QuibloGamingStudios
but hank had a reason unlike people today
his back was so awful it wouldve killed him anyway he was in so much pain the only way to ease it was drinking
poor man and his wife sure as hell didnt help any
edisonphonographfan 7 months ago
@gduwen Hank couldn't read or write exactly so Fred Rose wrote for him for this song.
paleboy1231 7 months ago
@paleboy1231 A lot of incredibly skilled and creative musicians could never read or write music. They just "played by ear" as the saying went. Just a few years ago I found out that there are several musically inclined people in our extended family. None of them can/could read or write music. A couple couldn't read or write words, either. :-O
MaeNotEast 4 months ago
@WaywardWind1 yes he did just like gduwen said. he is the true heart, and soul of country music!! that's why it makes me soooo mad when people say that george strait is the heart and soul of country cuz he's not. george is good, but he IS NOT the heart and soul of country. country was around long before he was. HANK SR. is the heart and soul of country music!!! peace to ya!!
nibornna 1 year ago
@WaywardWind1 he wrote either cold cold heart or I'm still in love with you in the office of a record exect while his wife band and they guy went got coffee because the guy did not believe he had written the words and music to alln the songs how he got famous

This song inspired me to speak to my girl, cuz' I couldn't stand the thought that she would go away without knowing how I felt. Thank you, Hank, from the bottom of my heart! And thank you, keithandshawn, for the correct spelling, I had no idea.
pigknuckle1 1 year ago
I was born and raised in Montgomery, AL, about an hour away from the spot where the statue of Kowaliga (correct spelling of the name) stood for as long as I can remember (I'm 50). We had a cabin on Lake Martin about 4 sloughs away and went there all the time. Loved this statue as a little girl, and love this song.
keithandshawn 1 year ago
@keithandshawn We don't have the original Kowaliga in our area (Utah), but we do have a wooden Indian figure in one of our area restaurants! It was a converted hot-springs-type resort. They had made it into a restaurant/bowling alley/import gift store, and in the foyer of the restaurant there stands our "Kawaliga"! I think of this song whenever I see it! :^)

This brings back fond memories of my childhood. Great song! Reminds me as well of my little sister's Golden Retriever, who was named after this song. He runs free in God's Country now...................

THE definitive version - NOBODY does it better!
CountryBoy749 1 year ago
@CountryBoy749 I liked Charley Pride's also. He had fun with it. Some like Charley's better, but I think maybe he just had the benefit of better recording and familiarity with the song. Anyhow, both are good, I think.

this is real southern music dont try and act like you really know what this is unless you grew up with this give respect people
krstndevore 1 year ago 2
Thank you, Buttontails. I can sit and listen to this music for hours on end. As the saying goes, they don't make'em like this anymore. In another 50 years, I seriously doubt people will be listening to what passes for country music today, but they'll still be listening and loving Hank and Patsy Cline and Bob Wills and Loretta Lynn and Sonny James and Johnny Horton and Tex Ritter and ..............
WaywardWind1 1 year ago 2
Yeah, the song is terriffic and Hank is at the top of his form, but listen to the fiddle! Of all country songs with fiddles, this one is the BEST. Does anyone know who playe the fiddle on this version? He was great and helped make the song a true classic.
WaywardWind1 1 year ago
@WaywardWind1 Hank Williams's fiddler was Jerry Rivers, and, yes, he was tremendous.
Buttontails 1 year ago
The hitch in his voice is what he's famous more. When he says Kaw-Liga in the chorous the pitch changes in his voice and its absolutely breathtaking. Hank Sr. will be missed greatly. I'm glad Im young and I know who he is. I keep Country alive.
Moviewhiz1 1 year ago 2

Like Hank was.
thenewenglandredneck 1 year ago
You should probably read about him. He was not much of a role model either.
gmcsierra2002 1 year ago
dude, REAL musicians write about their life experiences, and all those insults and bad mannerisms from Hank III is because he was on the same record contract his daddy was and they fucked him around, that's mostly why he talks all that shit, and you wouldn't want your kids followin the way of an outlaw would you?
dimebonics123 1 year ago
@dimebonics123 I happen to believe there are more civil ways to get a point across. I don't know if you ever thought of that. People who happen to handle anger, and not carry foolish pride that happens to be bigger than they are tend to be respected more.
