  • i love this song.. im only 2 and a half but yeah...... liars

  • @penuth yeah... really.

  • a Hank favorite--I love his blues but this one is a treasure! oh Hank, you left us so young

  • never heard this kind of music but i heard it on the radio and i had very tough to find it... but finnaly!!! very good music! i am a nostalgia guy so this music fits me;) !

  • im 6 and i am listening to this in 2011 :)

  • time marches on brought me here

  • I grow up with my grampa playing his music and this was my grampas fav song he would always tell me that hank loved native people in racist times and told me to always be proud of who we are as native people now my mooshum is in heaven with hank r.i.p to the two greatest people.

  • this is way before my time but i love this song

  • these are true words on how a person can feel... these classic country music is a chiller to the bones and how it can hit home for many.

  • i grew up on hank and love this kind of country! sittin on the porch while pawpaw told us we had music in our blood listenin to all of cousin hanks songs!

  • WHY my is falling apart cause of a girl and its like the kaw-liga story

  • primitive.

  • I don't know bout yall, but I like all the Hank family. From Sr. to III. Except the III metal songs, he fucked up with them.

  • @OutdoorsMan1775 i dont think 3 plays metal for your approval.

  • @OutdoorsMan1775 No he didnt, he has more metal fans and real credability for it. He'll never apologize to you for it either. It's your loss if your narrow mind cant transcend musical bounderies, and only like music packaged in a certain tidy way.

  • @steveymac69 Haha so just because I don't like one genre of music you guys get on my ass about it. I do listen to some metal but I think he has some very good country music. Sorry your probaly to naive and ignorant to open your eyes to what really is there and not your own little world. It is a loss for you to be a hypocrit amd talk crap over the computer because you think you are a bad ass. Same goes for you Bocephus3006. I don't know why your gettin' on my ass when you have the name bocephus.

  • @OutdoorsMan1775 wanker

  • oh my gosh! i have been searching for this song for ever! my dad used to sing it to me but i always thought he made it up..my life is now complete lol

  • apparently this is my theme song

  • My Grandma sang This To Me when I Was A Kid,,

  • I hear lots of people say "I normally hate country, but I like this" when referring to the "classics". I think the problem is that the country music of today is NOT country music. It is simply pop music... all frills and pretty bows and whistles...

While there is a fantastic underground bluegrass movement today it is the greats like Hank Williams and Bill Monroe that show what true country music is all about... simply put, it's just good damned music... No BS, just good songs and lots of heart.

  • @sqpnt .....i'm guilty of that. i was raised around this stuff and bluegrass. i actually like heavy metal, alternative, techno and stuff like that. look at my ID. i spelled it different, but that was the name of a rottweiler i had for a long time. i'd call for him and say "calliiiiiiiiijahhhhh" :0)

  • Being in my mid 50's This song still makes me tap my foot to the beat...and brings me back to the GOOD OLD DAY'S!!!

  • This song rite here was way before it's time. It's not your standard steel guitar, acoustic picking song. It's deeply thought out n just shows. Maybe we aren't as smart today as we think we are. You just can't beat the classics.

  • normally i hate country music completely but not with this this is by far my favorite song of this genre and is the only country song i listen to ... and i live in the middle of the country

  • she could never answer yes or no!

  • LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • 0 dislikes, listening to this while smoking a joint makes me feel righteous, 0 dislikes guys great job, great song

  • If you ever see a girl you like, don't be like poor Kaw-liga, make a move on her fast before she disappears or some other guy steals her and you'll be regretting it for a long time. Then your heart really will feel like knotty pine. Life is just too short for this.

Because even if she says no, at least you'll know and you have some closure.

  • ilove hank

  • awesome.

  • On Feb 21 1953 This song debuted on the country best seller list at #1. Only two other songs ever accomplished this. Guitar Polka by Al Dexter in 1946 and lastly More Than A Memory by Garth Brooks in 2007.

They played this song so much on the radio I had the lyrics memorized the first day.

  • My son's name is Elijah, I always sing this to him, makes him so mad! Aww the joys of being a mommy! lol

  • the lyrics are GENIUS

  • his voice gives me chills...I was raised on this music and I LOVE it and i'm not ashamed to say so even though i'm 15

  • @rebelgurl333 Never be ashamed that you like Hank. Check out Hank III...he looks and sounds like Sr (his non-rowdy songs do anyway)

  • @rebelgurl333 dude hes a good singer

  • @rebelgurl333 15? You will still love this when you are 150. You have taste. See ya in 50 years or so.

  • OMG i actually missed the like button and then clicked the like button about 20 times

  • I'm not from the US, but this is AWESOME!

  • He was Hank Williams before Hank Williams was cool.

  • great song

  • This was my dad's favorite song, for many years this was the song we played at midnight on New Years......... we would all get in a line and act like Indians. My Dad passed away In March 2011 and we played this song in the Hospital , at his bed side as he slipped through heavens gates. Miss you Dad!

  • Does anyone have this song, sung by Hawkshaw Hawkins? My mother had an album by Hawkshaw Hawkins with Kaw-liga on it, and I haven't been able to find it on YouTube.

  • ahhh finally REAL country not American Idol people who can't make it in pop

  • 578 likes, 0 disklies Wow! Shows hanks best

  • I hate to say this ,but Charley Pride's version is way way way way way better.

  • @Isotec1 Maybe not better but different?

  • @Isotec1 u suck

  • @Isotec1 Maybe (although I'm not necessarily admitting it), but if Hank hadn't written it, Charlie couldn't have sung it. So, what's your point? Charlie's a better singer? Maybe (although I'm not necessarily admitting it), but Hank's probably a better songwriter. There's nothing wrong with liking Charlie's version better, but it's not necessary to dis Hank in the process.

  • @Isotec1 I fucking love Charley Pride but his Kaw Liga has always just bugged the crap out of me.

  • @ffsafe3 l,vv,v

  • A true classic that should never be sung by anyone else. I want to pull out my hair every time I hear Charley Pride murder it.

  • @glipzik Hanks boy butchered it pretty bad too

  • Best version ever

  • And many others.

  • The story Hank was told he had to create another song by the end of the week and when he passed a store he saw a wooden Indian standing by the door which gave him an idea which then created this song later on with Fred Rose in Nashville, Tennessee in 1952. It remained No. 1 on the Billboard Country chart for 14 weeks and reached No. 23 on the pop charts. The flipside, "Your Cheatin' Heart, remained No. 1 on the country chart for 6 weeks.

  • My mom used to listen to this song all the time when I was young. I always felt sad for poor Kaw-liga. :(

  • my dad says i am kawliga

  • i love Charlie Pride's version too

  • Will Somone PLEASE make this video available on Mobile!!!!! I would love to listen to this song on my android.

  • I was listening to this one day at school, and somone looked at my ipod and said "Why the hell are you listening to some guy from the 50's!?!?!?" And i said " Cause he was better than anyone who could walk the earth, along with Elvis and The Beatles. So flip off."

    She got pwned.

  • @TheChocobread--keep on a listen bud, the 50's rock

  • I sing this to my baby boy everynight before bed, he loves it!

  • great song

  • I danced in my feety P J s to this one....

  • me too Silverback!! cheers mate, from Oz

  • Kaw-Liga just might have been the #1 song of 1953,but who knows! It might have been the #1 song of 1953!

  • @hank29pc713trainman for me its the #1 song in 2011 ;)

  • I've ALWAYS loved this song, I've been singing it since I was a little girl. And one night my daddy had me get up with his band and sing it with him. That's always been a great memory for me.

  • Haha! Man his grandson looks like grand daddy!

To me the Williams' have been a great gift to the

    music world.

  • QUE MUSICA ES BUENISIMA FELICITACIONES POR LA MÚSICA COUNTRY. ATTE ANGEL PINELA. GUAYAQUIL ECUADOR.

  • The first time I heard this song was the summer of '98. My grandfather was a huge Hank Williams fan.

  • As far as I know he wrote all his hits except Lovesick Blues.

  • I grew up listening to and loving this song!

  • FRED ROSE HAD FINAL SAY TO HANK'S SONGS,RECORDINGS...HANK PITCHED THIS SONG TO JIMMY DEAN BRFORE HE RECORDED IT,JIMMY DIDN;T WANT IT!

FRED POLISHED & tune smithed the compositions..

  • This song has only got ONE master: CHARLIE PRIDE !!!!!!!!!!

  • @haslakse Not true. That is your opinion and I respect that but Charlie Pride just sings it with loudness on the voice change at Kawliga. Hank's voice change is extreme and very people can do that and still control their voice. The same way with long gone lonesome blues. Only Hank can do that without sounding like Alfalfa. To be clear Charlie Pride is a great singer but with a different catalogue of songs.

  • @classiccntry I just love the soft voice of Charlie Pride :)

  • Adele ripped this off big time

  • this songs about a wooden indian

  • @identityfor thanks sherlock

  • @HisMickey its not just a regular indian. its a wooden one. if you dont iterate that people might not know.

  • @identityfor

    no shit?

  • a numerous singers have covered/copied this song FROM HANK WILLIAMS.

  • i listen to hank williams sr. and hank lll alot. not so much hank jr. though...

  • @fuckingbloodeagle Sinner!lol

  • @fuckingbloodeagle hank 3? what has he ever came out with thats good? maybe ill check him out?

  • @cjleger337 I've liked everything that Hank III has come out with, personally. It rubs alot of people the wrong way though.

  • I have listened to Kawliga hundreds of times and other country singers who have sang songs where they change their voice and to me it is obvious that Hank Williams on this song has the most controlled but yet intense voice change when he gets to the part where he sings the part of Kawliga. Charlie Pride does it but it is a drawn out Kawliga and not as radical a change in voice. Not taking anything from Charlie Pride but just simply put I like the intensity and raw feeling from Hank.

  • he was a pioneer for sure! it's the music that soths the soul, thats why there are so many upset and angry folks out there because today the music has no soul!!

  • @TheSilverback2004 thats right! my dad raised me on this stuff and i am love it!

  • @tamerswan no theres 3 haha but there all great

  • i actually differ slightly. Hank Sr. was a better song writer but Hank Jr. was a way better singer. And I agree with bubbysaint123 this crap they play on the radio today sucks

  • i am only 18 but i love this kind of music

  • @josepher2011 im 16 and i just love Hank Williams hahaha he was truly the best singer I know

  • i believe word Kowaliga the name of the lake, is where the native americans made their headbands

  • highways and byways

    purple hearts and seniors

    (k)

  • Years and years ago I heard this live by Ronnie Milsap and it was incredible. He can really hold that last note especially. I was trying to find a recording of it.

  • To think he died at 29! Imagine if he had lived a full life?

  • this brings me back to when i was a young

  • Hank was white But Nish respect him

  • haha my chemistry teacher was playing this today XD

  • @th4Guy77

    we have similar user names

  • @4l4ddin77 okay

  • 245 likes 0 dislikes. you know its a good jam

  • I used to play this years ago, I do the vocals and guitar and harmonica in a rack for the fiddle part. I'm dusting it off so I can do it tonight. Great song!

  • After listening to all available versions I must say that I like this one the best. Listened to it as a small child, we would all sing along. Charley Pride is also very good, very close second, Johnny Cash third, H W jr just terrible.

  • The greatest ever pioneer of country music - Mr. Hank Williams

  • @datoobster75 Your right but not just country. A huge influence to many generes of music throughout the 50's and 60's.

  • Hank Williams' lyrics are pure poetry. This song and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" both exemplify excellence lyrically. The latter is one of the greatest lyrics ever written in the history of country or any other music that I've ever heard. This man was a national treasure.

  • This song is so politically incorrect. Gotta love the music of the 50s. Still a good tune. I look up to Hank a lot. I've spent the past few years churning out music as fast as possible. Check out my music videos to hear my songs!

  • Can someone upload the Doc and Merle Watson version of this song. I think it's on a record called '""2 Days in September" a fabulous recording.

  • used to listen to this over and over on 8-track in my grandparents '82 cordoba. nothing like it will ever be written again. so haunting and pleasurable at the same time. hank sr was the greatest male "country" singer/composer ever!!!

  • @sbvrt6913 thats no lie, u dont think about it at the time but then you see hoe wonderful your grandparents and what wonderful talent their generation had. I will miss mine.

  • this video proves the "accidental dislike" theory wrong! By now, somebody would have disliked this video on accident but no! Hank is just too good for that!

  • my nickname from my grandfather who frequently sung this, and the wallbash cannonball

  • Thank you. I appreciate your help.

  • A question about Hank Williams and his music that I hope some Hank expert can answer. I know he wrote the lyrics, but did he also put the music to the words? Ive never known and am curious.

  • @WaywardWind1 He did both, that was why he was really a genius.

  • @gduwen-- too bad he got mixed up in drugs and drinking

  • @QuibloGamingStudios

but hank had a reason unlike people today

his back was so awful it wouldve killed him anyway he was in so much pain the only way to ease it was drinking

poor man and his wife sure as hell didnt help any

  • @gduwen Hank couldn't read or write exactly so Fred Rose wrote for him for this song.

  • @paleboy1231 A lot of incredibly skilled and creative musicians could never read or write music. They just "played by ear" as the saying went. Just a few years ago I found out that there are several musically inclined people in our extended family. None of them can/could read or write music. A couple couldn't read or write words, either. :-O

  • @WaywardWind1 yes he did just like gduwen said. he is the true heart, and soul of country music!! that's why it makes me soooo mad when people say that george strait is the heart and soul of country cuz he's not. george is good, but he IS NOT the heart and soul of country. country was around long before he was. HANK SR. is the heart and soul of country music!!! peace to ya!!

  • @WaywardWind1 he wrote either cold cold heart or I'm still in love with you in the office of a record exect while his wife band and they guy went got coffee because the guy did not believe he had written the words and music to alln the songs how he got famous

  • Thanks for posting!

  • no one does it like. hank no one...

  • @bongman96 whatever man. hank was an awesome singer God rest his soul. and hank williams knows how to rock the guitar too.

  • I always used to think this song was so haunting, for some reason.

  • I think Charley did a WAAAAY better job haha

  • I have always loved this song.

  • grew up on old country hank was my granddaddy's favorite i thank him every day for geittin me hooked on real country im 23 all i liston to is old country and blugrass growing up in the mountains that all i knew and now im passing it down 2 my kids

  • i am only 18 and hank williams is on of my favorites!!

  • @josepher2011 you know good music also check out webb pirece

  • Wow a song from my childhood, I was forced to listen to this as a child as punishment, that or dig a hole to make my dad happy.

  • This song inspired me to speak to my girl, cuz' I couldn't stand the thought that she would go away without knowing how I felt. Thank you, Hank, from the bottom of my heart! And thank you, keithandshawn, for the correct spelling, I had no idea.

  • I was born and raised in Montgomery, AL, about an hour away from the spot where the statue of Kowaliga (correct spelling of the name) stood for as long as I can remember (I'm 50). We had a cabin on Lake Martin about 4 sloughs away and went there all the time. Loved this statue as a little girl, and love this song.

  • @keithandshawn We don't have the original Kowaliga in our area (Utah), but we do have a wooden Indian figure in one of our area restaurants! It was a converted hot-springs-type resort. They had made it into a restaurant/bowling alley/import gift store, and in the foyer of the restaurant there stands our "Kawaliga"! I think of this song whenever I see it! :^)

  • I wonder if anyone has ever played this at an American Indian convention?

  • This brings back fond memories of my childhood. Great song! Reminds me as well of my little sister's Golden Retriever, who was named after this song. He runs free in God's Country now...................

  • THE definitive version - NOBODY does it better!

  • @CountryBoy749 I liked Charley Pride's also. He had fun with it. Some like Charley's better, but I think maybe he just had the benefit of better recording and familiarity with the song. Anyhow, both are good, I think.

  • this is real southern music dont try and act like you really know what this is unless you grew up with this give respect people

  • Thank you, Buttontails. I can sit and listen to this music for hours on end. As the saying goes, they don't make'em like this anymore. In another 50 years, I seriously doubt people will be listening to what passes for country music today, but they'll still be listening and loving Hank and Patsy Cline and Bob Wills and Loretta Lynn and Sonny James and Johnny Horton and Tex Ritter and ..............

  • Yeah, the song is terriffic and Hank is at the top of his form, but listen to the fiddle! Of all country songs with fiddles, this one is the BEST. Does anyone know who playe the fiddle on this version? He was great and helped make the song a true classic.

  • @WaywardWind1 Hank Williams's fiddler was Jerry Rivers, and, yes, he was tremendous.

  • The hitch in his voice is what he's famous more. When he says Kaw-Liga in the chorous the pitch changes in his voice and its absolutely breathtaking. Hank Sr. will be missed greatly. I'm glad Im young and I know who he is. I keep Country alive.

  • How about that voice change when he goes to Kawliga? I wonder how many people can do it that well. Can't be described. One thing also noted about Hank Williams is it is written and pretty much understood that not one word in all of his songs can be changed. They are perfect flow and all that good stuff.

  • This what I call REAL Country

  • Such power in such a simple song.

Hank is a perenial flower that never fails to bloom.

The crop just gets bigger every season!!!!

  • 0:52

  • Thank you for this post, have not heard this song for over 30 years...Thank you!

  • Hank's with Jesus!

  • Too bad we aint got country like this today. All we have left really is George Strait, and Alan Jackson. Hank Williams III is really kind of just dishing out insults left, and right, and making a bad name for himself. It's unfortunate he can't be a little nicer, and more appropriate in his music. He might be a bigger success if he could just be a little more polite, and a little bit less explicit. People want their singers to be good role models. Like Hank was.

  • You should probably read about him. He was not much of a role model either.

  • dude, REAL musicians write about their life experiences, and all those insults and bad mannerisms from Hank III is because he was on the same record contract his daddy was and they fucked him around, that's mostly why he talks all that shit, and you wouldn't want your kids followin the way of an outlaw would you?

  • @dimebonics123 I happen to believe there are more civil ways to get a point across. I don't know if you ever thought of that. People who happen to handle anger, and not carry foolish pride that happens to be bigger than they are tend to be respected more.

  • i love this song thanks so much for posting it

  • thanks for the post

  • I was named after this song, only with with different spelling and slightly different pronunciation

  • My Father bought an Indian statue and named it Kaw-Liga after this song. He was a huge fan of Hank Sr.

  • Must have been, I went to his sons bar in Puryear Tn andwas thrown out at close for having to much fun, wish Hank Junior would have been there to set them straight.

  • Hank is the greatest that ever lived. He left us way too soon. Much respect my brother Hank.

  • Just about wore the jute box playing this one

  • this is real country not like wat the have 2 day

  • @bubbysaint123 i am 17 years old. you would think im hooked to the new country today right? well the only country i like is old as anything. johnny cash hank williams sr hank williams jr charlie danials . the classic stuff
