sodo - You mean Interstate 15 that goes from So Cal to Vegas? Definitely not it. This is a secondary road of some kind. Maybe you meant to write HWY 95 north of Needles? I-15 has two, three, or four lanes going both ways on most of its sections. The road in your video is a two lane blacktop road, like HWY 95.
You're absolutely right, my mistake. I recall that there was a point where you can take HWY15 to Vegas or a side road that would cut through the desert and save you about an hour or two in driving time to Vegas. That's the road we took and half way through it we encountered this. I had to drive back an hour and a half to reach 15 and take that the remainder of the way.
OK, well, I'd have to break out the maps to see where you mean. Did you go through a little town Nipton? That's a side road that you could take to go around traffic on the 15. I have to laugh though: You took a side road as a short cut, and then had to double back because of a flash flood.
Let me tell you something about desert flash floods: They don't last forever. If you had waited 1 1/2 hrs (the same amount of time that it took you to drive back to the 15), the flood would have subsided.
Hmm, Nipton doesn't ring a bell. I'm not too familiar with the area though so I very well could have.
I know what you mean...we drove through a smaller flood just before we encountered this one but by the time we came back to it it was complete gone. I had to get to Vegas though, drinks were waiting for me.
...but you spent the hour and a half driving back to the interstate, plus the time to make up for the driving-back distance. Hmmmm. You could have saved more time by waiting out the big part of the flood.
Good video though. I see the railroad tracks nearby in the video. Those are a clue as to your location. When I have the time, I'm going to look at my maps, and I'll get back to you with my guess as to your location at the time you shot this video.
I've looked at my maps and the only secondary road that is off of the 15 which crosses over a set of railroad tracks is near the little community Nipton.
I'd also say Nipton. You probably took Nipton Road into Nipton and took either Nipton Desert Rd. or Nipton Moore Road to get access to those railroad tracks, as they run parallel to the tracks as traverse the many ditches and washes that run under the tracks.
But why take Nipton Rd. to Searchlight and take US 95 north to Boulder City, NV? It's much slower and there's a higher chance of running into a flash flood because the secondary roads in that kind country don't even have bridges to cross over washes and ditches; unlike I-15, which does.
I do not understand why anyone would go that way, you head toward nipton which directs you to searchlight, THEN you can get to vegas but that is way out of the way, could traffic on I-15 been that bad?
Looks like someone's car tried to drive through. Looks like it could be north of Needles.

Meanwhile, a train is just around the corner, but the sound of the flash flood masks it, and some people get hit. Then they blame the railroad...

On what road were you driving when the flash flood occurred? Can you be specific?
Also, when did it happen? I guess it was summertime, right? It was a summer thunderstorm that created the flashflood probably.
bapyou 4 years ago
It was HWY 15 which took us through the middle of the desert. And yes, it was mid July so it was hot, muggy, and very unpleasant.
