Well, if this is all about democrats getting as much as possible their way, then yes they can be considered weak. But this is about nailing the best bipartison deal, not having everything your way. Cenk i think you put a lot of weight in the public option....I think there can still be a very very good healthcare reform without the public option. Obama always thinks long term. That s the difference.
first and foremost obama is a politician and it appears that he has mastered the art of selling out to the big pocket corporations without making it look so obvious that he sold out. the good thing is that some people are waking up to this and are paying attention to what's really going on. bush sold out to the military industrial complex. in fact i'm willing to say that the last REAL president we had that was actually for the people, was JFK and we see how that turned out.
Only in America can you got to jail for bribing a cop or selling a US Senate seat, but bribing a politician is not only OK, but if you have the money, it's encouraged.
The next Czar I want to see is a corruption czar that will implement campaign finance and lobbying...err bribery reform to throw poliitcians that take money from special interests in jail.
There are talks that the public will only be dropped partially, to give the insurance company a chance to improve competetion. if they fail to live up to that, the public option will be "triggered" into effect as a fail safe.
According to the Economist the total US spending on health care is 17.6% of GDP or 2.2 Trillion dollars. With that we get 2.6 doctors & 3.3 hospital beds per 1,000 people, and we live to an avg. age of 78.2 As a whole Europe spends 9.6% of GDP on health care, has 3.9 doctors & 6.6 hospital beds per 1,000 people and live until they are 81.15 old. If we would just model a European health plan we would save 1 Trillion Dollars a year. Thats 1 Trillion!!!
I'm sure he knew that, seeings as the USA has a predominantly private healthcare system.
Since the point of his statement was that we should have a public option, only a "dummie" would think he did not know the majority of healthcare spending in the USA was on private insurance.
Yep, I'm not sure I know of any countries in europe which haven't got a healthcare system for all.. NHS here in england is good and france are number one I believe. *Sigh* how do so many Americans not know the majority of their politicians have been bought.. at least on this matter.
yea.. but u know we don't' want to be like the Europeans or anyone else, even IF IT'S BENEFICIAL. We are Americans. We are different, we WANT to be different.
This speech will be huge eye opener for better or worse. If he fucks around even his staunch base in Iowa will flee. His ratings will likely plumet and the Repubs will pounce like Lions on fresh meat.
I will no longer devote my time and energy to any candidate that doesn't have eliminating corporate lobbyists and corporate interest from their grip of our society.
War, The Economy, Education, Energy, ALL of these are secondary issues. We MUST get this country back from Corporations.
THAT IT! I too will be watching this speech and there's only one sentence I want to hear CLEARLY - "We will have a public option in the bill or I will veto it!"
If he talks about fucking triggers that shoot blanks then fuck it all. Hey, I'm not disillusioned, I know even a weak Obama administration is way!!! better than what we had for the last 8yrs but the status quo is not why millions spent their energy for this man to get elected.
I don't want to feel like a fool but we'll see soon
no, there still very smart. The role of any government is not to help people, rather "to keep its self in power" (pols class). to keep them in office they need campaign money.
We should have the public option, however if we do get it we have to abolish the Fed or reform it first. Because of traditional Central Banking practice, if the government were to become responsible for giving healthcare to every citizen, the cost would inevitably drive our dollar to inflate as any money the US government spends does, annnnnd we'd just be fucking ourselves into a deeper recession. Don't get me wrong, I want the public option...It's just there are so many things wrong
Lobbying should be closely monitored and made illegal in the United States. Receiving money from special interest groups or any individual in return for political support is nothing short of a bribe. Lobbying is more dangerous to the American people than marijuana, same-sex marriage, and American funded terrorists combined.
That's right, and campaign money is what is killing the bill, it's not opposition to the public option, it's opposition to *anything* that lowers prices for the insurance industry. If Obama had some sense, this would have been his first battle before healthcare. But.... he recieves that money too ...so if he loses this battle, he deserves it and I have no sympathy for him. I feel sorry for you America!
All this talk of people being communists and socialists is nothing but the ramblings of people who don't know any better and are stuck in cold war mentality. Public heathcare is a good thing you people! It's the reason other people in other countries who have it aren't dyinging in a gutter before their 45 and without a set of teeth! A state run healthcare is simply more accountable than a corporate one. Doesn't take a genius to see.
Let's take Canada ... they're close by ... and supposedly "Scary Socialists" ... Ask conservatives what freedoms they DON'T have. Let's see ... they have more guns per capita than us, universal health care, no bank bail outs, no real estate collapse ... what exactly are they afraid of.
I hear you loud and clear. The concept of being without medicare frightens me... Imagine being bankrupted because you get seriously ill one day... even if you had insurance...
The people clearly stated in the elections, they don't want the Republicans in charge of Congress or the White house and yet the same Republicans that ran up the debt, got us in two wars, and continue to be a worldwide embarrasment to the country are dominating the conversation on how to solve these problems. WTF?
That does not mean that Obama shouldnt be ardently advocating the public option. He should make it absolutuely clear in his speech today that he strongly believes that a public option would be the most effective form of reform, and HE WILL.
Threatening to veto a bill WITHOUT a public option will get him and our healthcare system nowhere. It would mean NOT reforming the healthcare system AT ALL.
Why the fuck should Obama have to veto a bill without A public option? ANY REFORM IS BETTER THAN NO REFORM AT ALL!
He CAN NOT veto a healthcare reform bill. He just cant leave the health care system as it is now.like Clinton. If he vetos a bill without a public option it will only prove that he didnt really give a damn about reforming the healthcare system at all and that his proposed public option was nothing but a political game.
Mandating health insurance with the companies is worse that the current situation - it's a removal of choice, and contributes even more to the near monopoly these companies have. The insurance companies will love mandated insurance.
Clearly. We have more or less the same crazy system here in Holland. Although thankfully it is regulated pretty strongly, but even so I can tell you my insurance costs haven't gone down. In fact they've skyrocketed in the past 10 years.
I live in holland too! And it's pretty ok here in comparison to the US. My insurance is about a 100 EUR a month, it's government regulation that keeps the cost low-ish and ensures that no company is allow to deny me. The republicans though aren't really against the public option though, they're against anything that lowers costs. Lower costs = pissed off insurance industry, and that's what they most care about. It's all rooted in campaign contributions, and Obama should have fixed that first.
Yeah compared to the US it's amazing here, but then which country isn't? ;)
100 euros I guess isn't bad internationally but I remember a time when the government still essentially ran things and it was about 35 guilders a month. Of course that was subsidized so you paid for it indirectly but then again it still is.
As for the public option, not much I can add to that, it's exactly right. No negotiation, no competition, no public option, now even the trigger is getting "compromised" away. Man..
Ive been watching your coverage of this healthcare debate and youve made it abundantly clear that you dont want a public option to be passed for the people who actually need it and will need it in the future but you want it simply because it would be a "score one" for the Democrats.
I dont think Cenk is thinking in those terms. It's the republicans who want score one against Obama and the democrats. Cenk wants the democrats to be strong on this because the public option just makes sense, and he wants Obama to follow through on his policies. We're so used to people just backing their party regardless, but I don't think Cenk is one of those, he routinely beats the democrats with a stick when they're wrong or weak.
There's a Socialist party? I thought there only were the bribed half assed sissys (Democrats) and the batshit insane extremists of the right (Republicans), left?
Man these Democrats are a real piece of work. I don't know whether to laugh or cry at how weak and indecisive the dems can be. Its stuff like this that makes me think the Democratic politicians are not at all in touch with what the American people want.
Maybe it's time Barack Obama is reminded just who got him into office. Republicans will oppose Obama on every issue because it's their only way to keep what's left of their dying party. If Republicans were bipartisan, they would act on what's best for the people, but they're not. They're thinking of 2010 mid-term elections and gaining support for the 2012 presidential elections.
No public option = Obama will be watching the inauguration on January 20, 2013 from the sidelines or on TV.
Democrat voters really need to check their boy. If this guy tries to take the typical Democrat road and back out throw him and every Democrat who voted against it out of office. Democrats have been taking their left base for granted since the 70s.
I'll be falling out of my seat if he actually decides to veto the bill if it doesn't have the public option too. But Obama's got a term to endure; he probably don't want to spend too much of it fighting off corporate interests but then again he could just kill the bill all together and everything stays the same then be accused by the right-wing of stifling healthcare reform. So, most likely they'll get this bill through without the public option. Corporate interests win, for now.
i'm european and you don't need to tell me to go back, i love it, but countries like the US do have better living standards and education/ job opportunities.
but i'm a citizen of a country, born here, why shouldn't our views be taken with the same amount of weight as yours? because our parents migrated for better lives?
first im im not a "noob" lol and if u took the time to read my comment you should have taken the time to see it was a response to a comment made by some dumb ass person telling OBAMA to go back to kenya even though he is an american citizen and born in america.. so i jus made a statement by his logic white people should go to europe even though their american citizen... DO U GET IT NOW?
This is a clear sign that Obambi WILL be a 1 term EPIC FAIL and will get PWNED by Sarah Palin in 2012. It is the WORD and WILL of GOD HERSELF and GOD HERSELF SAID SO! Palin's rise to the presidency will ensure the death blow and the final nail in the coffin for the DEMS and Liberalism! By 2021, the Democratic Party WILL BE EXTINCT and Liberalism around the world WILL be defunct! Palin will spread Palinist conservativism by force or by violent war to all countries around the entire world!
No, he'll win in 2012 because the middle class is with him on this. They realize the public option means they will pay for the poor...eventually. But their 401K's are 30% off their peaks, and maybe they won't be able to afford that 2nd retirement home, the one in the beach town, so they'd rather throw the poor under the bus.
There is no health care reform if it doesn't have a public option? What are you democrats going to do without the public option? Pump more of my tax dollars into the broken medicare system? Screw that!
Your right we should cut all socail government programs so your tax dollars are not being "wasted" so first action should be...we take your kids out of school and force you off from driving any public roads.
Well i have a question. Why isn't there a loud lion roar asking to end Medicare? Because with no reform of medicare the same thing will happen with you tax dollars. AND non insured emergenvy room patients will also continue to get tons of your tax payer dollars tool
I voted for Obama seeing that guy had major dollars from industry. I am not surprised at his spineless waffling. The hate radio guys are loving his spinelessness. Obama makes me sad
If Obama doesn't say he's going to veto anything that doesn't include a public option then he's going to lose his base. If he loses his base the Republitards will actually have a good chance of getting back into office in 2012. THEN, watch the shit hit the fan! The WHOLE world thought that America might be maturing but they will have learned that the big, stupid dog is still growling and unpredictable. If Obama doesn't follow through on REAL change, American world influence is a dead duck.
Congress is now trying to push through a bill requiring people to buy health insurance, with a $3,800 dollar fine for people who are uninsured.
I'm an unemployed student trying to make my way through college. The government already thinks I have enough money for school (I don't, but I get no financial assistance anyway), and they'll probably "think" I have enough money to buy health insurance too. I'm starting to wonder if they're gonna throw me in jail for being too poor.
The why is because Dems are about as bought and sold as the Repubs.
Never mind that most of the public has supported a single payer type system for decades, that it would actually lower costs and exclude nobody, would eliminate more than half of all bankruptcies, reduce suffering and deaths.
The Dems are so bought and sold they are hard to press on a pathetic public option. What is preferred by the psychotic right? Continued escalating costs, more human suffering and needless deaths
I blame the American people for being pussies. Obama got the presidency. He got his. No pussy there. It's the rest of the country just eating shit and saying, "This is still warm! Thanks!!" that are the pussies. Americans disgust me.
Really makes you wonder. Maybe democrats proposing health care reform is their way of going on strike and demanding a pay raise from the insurance companies.
I guess tomorrow is going to be quite a big day for Obama and America. I dunno though.. if I was living in America I'd be looking to leave right now, the whole country seems like a powder-keg waiting to go off any second. With so many people experiencing so many intense emotions over this, it's only a matter of time until someone lights the fuse and then.. ..
No matter what the issue the US never erupts. Once in a while black people burn down their own neighborhood and assault people who are there and aren't black. That's all that ever happens. This is why we never get real change in this country. If the TV says you lost you drink a beer and go to work the next day. If the TV says you won you drink a beer and go to work the next day. No change.
yeah, maybe killing all black people is what america really needs to do to gte back on its feet! fucking blacks are bancrupting the system and killing the pure whites! If it weren't for blacks, all aryan people in america would have good and well functioning hell care!!
haha, I'm black and I'm laughing at this. I'm feeling no angry. Sadly, your dreams will never come true. We here to stay baby. We'll be on TV, in the army, in colleges, a majority of ther NBA, NFL, we will more than likely be dating your daughters too. And sadly, some will be taking your tax money, with a smile one their faces and frown on yours that you can't do anything about. Yeah, thats right. Haha, thats life baby, and we loving it. Grow up dude.
anything less than pronouncing the he (obama) will not only VETO, but denounce, anything less than the public option; will be taken as a "politics as norm" kinda stance.
i know, i know, there is still 3 more years or so . . .
but he (obama) will basically be going back on what he promised us all -- if he doesnt take a firm platform on healthcare.
I'm really getting frustrated feeling bad bad for America as you guys have all the means to not only fix your health care system but to ACTUALLY build the best system in the world.

first and foremost obama is a politician and it appears that he has mastered the art of selling out to the big pocket corporations without making it look so obvious that he sold out. the good thing is that some people are waking up to this and are paying attention to what's really going on. bush sold out to the military industrial complex. in fact i'm willing to say that the last REAL president we had that was actually for the people, was JFK and we see how that turned out.
TyredUvBS 2 years ago
Only in America can you got to jail for bribing a cop or selling a US Senate seat, but bribing a politician is not only OK, but if you have the money, it's encouraged.
The next Czar I want to see is a corruption czar that will implement campaign finance and lobbying...err bribery reform to throw poliitcians that take money from special interests in jail.

There are talks that the public will only be dropped partially, to give the insurance company a chance to improve competetion. if they fail to live up to that, the public option will be "triggered" into effect as a fail safe.
So thats another way this can play out. Win win.
uhm179 2 years ago
Haven't they already proven that they have no interest in increasing competition and lowering costs? How many more chances are we going to give them?

Public Option Save a Trillion per year
According to the Economist the total US spending on health care is 17.6% of GDP or 2.2 Trillion dollars.
MyImago 2 years ago 2
you dummie
most of the 17.6% is actually private money being spent on private insurance
genie0390 2 years ago
To Genie0390
I'm sure he knew that, seeings as the USA has a predominantly private healthcare system.
Since the point of his statement was that we should have a public option, only a "dummie" would think he did not know the majority of healthcare spending in the USA was on private insurance.

I will no longer devote my time and energy to any candidate that doesn't have eliminating corporate lobbyists and corporate interest from their grip of our society.
War, The Economy, Education, Energy, ALL of these are secondary issues. We MUST get this country back from Corporations.

KingLeBronVersion 2 years ago 5
That's right, and campaign money is what is killing the bill, it's not opposition to the public option, it's opposition to *anything* that lowers prices for the insurance industry. If Obama had some sense, this would have been his first battle before healthcare. But.... he recieves that money too ...so if he loses this battle, he deserves it and I have no sympathy for him.

WTF?
tray04will 2 years ago 8
That does not mean that Obama shouldnt be ardently advocating the public option. He should make it absolutuely clear in his speech today that he strongly believes that a public option would be the most effective form of reform, and HE WILL.
Threatening to veto a bill WITHOUT a public option will get him and our healthcare system nowhere. It would mean NOT reforming the healthcare system AT ALL.
ZingZee123456789 2 years ago
Why the fuck should Obama have to veto a bill without A public option? ANY REFORM IS BETTER THAN NO REFORM AT ALL!
He CAN NOT veto a healthcare reform bill. He just cant leave the health care system as it is now.like Clinton. If he vetos a bill without a public option it will only prove that he didnt really give a damn about reforming the healthcare system at all and that his proposed public option was nothing but a political game.
ZingZee123456789 2 years ago 2
that's what I've been trying to say for a long time.
vegitoth 2 years ago
Mandating health insurance with the companies is worse that the current situation - it's a removal of choice, and contributes even more to the near monopoly these companies have. The insurance companies will love mandated insurance.
coolman9999uk 2 years ago
Clearly. We have more or less the same crazy system here in Holland. Although thankfully it is regulated pretty strongly, but even so I can tell you my insurance costs haven't gone down. In fact they've skyrocketed in the past 10 years.
megamarsvin 2 years ago
I live in holland too! And it's pretty ok here in comparison to the US. My insurance is about a 100 EUR a month, it's government regulation that keeps the cost low-ish and ensures that no company is allow to deny me. The republicans though aren't really against the public option though, they're against anything that lowers costs. Lower costs = pissed off insurance industry, and that's what they most care about. It's all rooted in campaign contributions, and Obama should have fixed that first.
coolman9999uk 2 years ago 4
Yeah compared to the US it's amazing here, but then which country isn't? ;)
100 euros I guess isn't bad internationally but I remember a time when the government still essentially ran things and it was about 35 guilders a month. Of course that was subsidized so you paid for it indirectly but then again it still is.
As for the public option, not much I can add to that, it's exactly right. No negotiation, no competition, no public option, now even the trigger is getting "compromised" away. Man..
megamarsvin 2 years ago
Ok Cenk. Youre kind of pissing me off now.
Ive been watching your coverage of this healthcare debate and youve made it abundantly clear that you dont want a public option to be passed for the people who actually need it and will need it in the future but you want it simply because it would be a "score one" for the Democrats.
THIS ISNT ABOUT THE DEMOCRATS, CENK!
ZingZee123456789 2 years ago
I dont think Cenk is thinking in those terms. It's the republicans who want score one against Obama and the democrats. Cenk wants the democrats to be strong on this because the public option just makes sense, and he wants Obama to follow through on his policies. We're so used to people just backing their party regardless, but I don't think Cenk is one of those, he routinely beats the democrats with a stick when they're wrong or weak.

wayne388 2 years ago
Maybe it's time Barack Obama is reminded just who got him into office. Republicans will oppose Obama on every issue because it's their only way to keep what's left of their dying party. If Republicans were bipartisan, they would act on what's best for the people, but they're not. They're thinking of 2010 mid-term elections and gaining support for the 2012 presidential elections.

amyleesilent 2 years ago 2
I'll be falling out of my seat if he actually decides to veto the bill if it doesn't have the public option too. But Obama's got a term to endure; he probably don't want to spend too much of it fighting off corporate interests but then again he could just kill the bill all together and everything stays the same then be accused by the right-wing of stifling healthcare reform. So, most likely they'll get this bill through without the public option. Corporate interests win, for now.
