  • Was there pot in those OLD GOLD cigarettes?

  • @hallj100 Never did trust that Red Barber! Next thing he'll tell us is the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles!

  • "VR" is the "watermark" of the video distributor of this piece of film, 'ACCountry' {I know who it is, but I won't reveal their identity}. Lorillard Tobacco wanted their opening, with Red plugging their cigarette, on film before the game, so Red filmed this in advance (it's a "standard" opening, designed to be repeated numerous times throughout the '48 season; that's why Red refers to "Ebbets Field" instead of "Wrigley"). As this film ended, the "live" portion of the game was televised...

  • Just finished reading "Friends with Red," by Bob Edwards - a classic (without exaggeration).written in 1993.

Grab a copy. It could not have been better written if the author had been E.B. White.

  • I think whoever put this together used a recording over top of the wrong visuals because even a 1948 television broadcast wouldn't look so choppy. Ed Sullivan and other programs that were on TV in 1948, their re-airings don't look like that. Curious why it's choppy visually but sounds great audio-wise. What are the "VR" initials down in the bottom right?

  • How can it be a Cubs/Giants game from Brooklyn's Ebbets Field?

  • The game was broadcast from Wrigley Field, but Red's Old Gold commercial was pre-recorded (on film, in a studio).

  • It's supposedly "direct from Wrigley Field", but Red said that they're in Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.
