Feral cats are a problem in many parts of the US, but no one considers them a problem. Besides, it is a fact of evolution that island species are less able to compete with species evolved on the continents. This is why ferrets caused a problem in New Zeland and why they will not in the USA.

Wikipedia says ferrets are illegal in some parts of the world because they can breed with European Polecats to produce colonies of hybrid animals, but Euroupean Polecats are in Europe and Asia not America, so that could not possibly happen in the USA. On their own ferrets are highly domesticated animals that cannot survive in the wild. Cats have a much better chance of surviving in the wild, and no one illeagalizes them.

It makes no sense that they are illegal. They are all fixed at a young age & even if an intact one gets loose what are the odds that it runs into another intact ferret. They have sold them here in Tn for decades but I have yet to see roving gangs of wild ferrets in Tn.

Californians can't have anything, can they. Well, except for a dozen demilitarized humvees. Nothing wrong with that. But keeping a small pet like a ferret somehow is a worse environmental impact than a Humvee? I don't think so. And despite what they say, ferrets are pretty common pets. They're only uncommon in California because they've been criminalized. But when ferrets are outlawed, only outlaws will have ferrets.

X had 2. They can't ever survive in the wild now. They are too domesticized (is that a word?) (no I think it should be) domesticated. Their cute but they don't live long and have allot of pituitary issues. They kinda stink even with their glands removed. There is no logical reason to ban them, it's a stupid law. Along with the ban on Sugar Gliders in California. Some laws are just too stupid to obey.

I would like to help point out that when a ferret is purchased from pet stores in oregon, they are spayed or neutered. Wouldn't it be the same way in California? Aren't they worried about them breeding in the first place, with the natural wildlife? Help them realize that responsible ferret owners spay/neuter just like responsible dog or cat owners. I think your doing a great thing!! I love my 3 crazy ferrets! They're a great indoor companion.

ferrets are wild here in new zealand. along with stoats and weasles. they hunt flightless bird (which were abundant in nz) they are considered pests, BUT you can still own them as pets. they can be feral, destructive and vicious, but they still make pretty cool pets

New Zealand is a different issue. New Zealand has an issue with wild ferrets and hybrids. Not Domesticated ferrets which is the discussion here. Ferrets aren't know to live more than 7 days in the wild. Plus, they are alls spayed and neutered before they are even purchased. So, even if a few do escape, there is no threat of a breeding population. Isn't CA trying to solve their rabbit problem anyways? Gophers? Ground squirrels? Maybe CA should look into ferreting, not poisoning? IDK.

Ferrets are legal almost everywhere in the USA. California, Hawaii, NY City, and a few other places are the exception. Many places origonally illegalized them because their was no Rabies vaccine. Apparantly, some people havn't realized the we got the vaccine years ago.

I think the reason that ferrets are illegal in California because the ferret in kindergarten cop bit him and now he hates them. lol, I'm probably closer to the truth than you'd think.
