Some of the highest notes in this piece are, 'technically' speaking, way beyond the recognised range for the clarinet which extends from E below middle C, to C three octaves above middle C. They are therefore bound to sound a little squeeky. Sure there were some technical mistakes but it is still quite an extraordinary performance.
the original is impressive enough and challenging enough for any violinist, but he has taken it a step further pushing the limits of contemporary clarinet technique in order to play every note that was written for the soloist, including the ones in chords. Truly our century's Anton Stadler.
HOLY kaakaa... i had no idea that satan could play the clarinet....seriously.. this guy is a hoot......ive never hear a real clarinet virtuoso before but now i have..... he goes over the top some but wtf.... its exciting , musical and entertaining... i bet rossini just wet himself.....
He was jumping octaves - not 'squeaking'. He even made this clarinet sound like a flute - no small undertaking. He's a clarinet virtuoso. This performance gets an A++++ and then some. Great job!!!
i'm pretty sure he likes his sound.... i think he was trying to make it sound different and un-clarinetish. i'd say it's a nice effect. because you can't get so high on the high register without good embouchure.
Technically, it is true that this is not flawless, and that is why I want to hear Bekavac's Carmen again and see how this variation will change... maybe I am wishing to hear Horowitz on Clarinet...?
Bekavac's variation is of much bravura, and to the point that I think is highly experimental. As such, I expect him to keep experimenting. I think Bekavac's "parlor tricks" are just the start of a whole study in post-altissimo acrobatics for clarinets, and this I eagerly await.
@miksostft - I may be wrong but I think the instrument he is using is actually a clarinet in C - and not the usual B flat. It is slightly shorter than the B flat and would sound a tone higher than the B flat. Clarinets have been made in almost every key but the B flat and A have now come to be the norm. I have often pondered transcribing some Pagannini Caprices for clarinet - no need to transpose them if using a C instrument.
@ChristianOrtega123 Nvm. I was distracted by his big body making the clarinet look smaller.i just pulled my clarinet out and played it by ear and it is, in fact in Bb because I just played on my Bb and he uses the same fingerings. sorry for the disagreement. lol.
He's getting tired in this second half. He squeaked bluntly once and subtly at least thrice. But no wonder... this is such a strenuous (and beautiful) music to play....

Mate said before the concert that this is an experiment. I think it was never meant to be perfect or witohut mistake. He was experimenting the clarinet in front of public with extremely hard piece. I was on that concert and it was just phenomenal feeling, nearly as god as there on youtube video. Mate said before the concert a lot of interesting things about this performance wich I think it would answer all your questions you´ve asked here. Maybe you should hear what he said...
Jaw hits floor dang! :D This is once again amazing - Oh FYI Squeaks can happen when the reed is to dry. If you paid attention he was messing with it toward the beginning. It probally has dried out a little bit - One squeak get over it. This is amazing!
I honestly can't understand how you can make such a big deal over a stupid squeak. Post a video of you playing this live in response to this one and let's see how you fair buddy. There's no way it would even be close to this guy so back off.
Mate Bekavac je najbolji i najkompletniji klarinetista na svetu! Covek je genije! Pokazao je maximum na instrumentu! Svako moze da prica sta hoce, on jedinstven! Doveo je klarinet do perfekcije!
Firstly: Everyone who says that Sabine Mayer, Leister and others are better than Mate... I´m toooooootally sure you´ve never heard him playing L.I.V.E. The same for those who says that he´s not playing musically.
Secondly: About overdosed technique in this piece. Why do you think he have done that...beacuse he has such a brilliant technique that he can experiment in every way he wants. If there wuldn´t have been such inovators like him, we would be proabaly still playing like 100 years ago.
Joder con el gitano, como toca, es el puto amo. El arreglo tambien es una pasada. Cambia de registros como si fuera lo más fácil del mundo, y esas agudas ... puf, es bestial
Mate had concert in Novi Sad(Serbia)2006,2008 and it was the best performance ever!!!He brought clarinet plaing technic from perfect to impossible. Perfect ligature, staccato, breath control, music stile....At concert he played circular breathing on c4?!? And that is 1 small thing from his arsenal.Brilliant improvisation also.He is pushing technical and sound limit even further, making a new way of playng. PURE PERFECTION!
If anyone like to share comment's about mate feel free to contact...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I respect your view, but I'd just like to say that good technique does not always mean excellent musicianship. Even in this video, Mate couldn't handle his own techniques, which resulted in a squeak in the end.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
When players use dazzling technique, the underlying basis is that he had mastered all of it perfectly, which means that a squeak is critical. Most professionals do not have squeaks in their performances, and that leaves a big hole. I would also like to criticize your "If you can't do beter, shut up" logic. Then Why are there critics at all?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
and you haven't answered my claim either, that brilliant technique does not always mean good musicianship. I've never said that Mate's a bad player. I'm just saying that he's focused too much on technique, which is, sadly, the trend of most young musicians these days.
Yes,that is true......Mate also have sile and he's not 'young generation' because in concerts I'w been he played Bach,Mozart, penderecki, and Kupferman moonflowers baby and it was with 'full stile' each piece. I agree, technique is over used in clarinet performing. Music is much more important.......When I get those records I'll contact you and send it..........
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
did any of you recognize a squeak? overuse of technique, I guess. Although I appreciate the brilliant technique of the player, this video made me think why composers write music for a certain instrument, not just a general instrument.
if You have ever heard a real clarinettist, you would know that a squeak is nothing compared to one's perfect performance of the piece which is marvelous by itself. This is the most difficult piece for clarinet ever. He brought such an open-minded approach to the piece, which propelled his musicianship to a whole another level.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
dear akandrija,
squeaks are for students. Pros should not have any squeaks. Why try to play a piece you can't even handle?
Also, in case you don't know, many modern composers write even harder pieces for clarinet, but in a way that somehow shows the beauty of the clarinet sound.
squeaks are for students? have you ever been to a live performance? i heard david shifrin squeak in a performance of the poulenc sonata, but i guess he isn't a "pro" like you. your comparison of this guy to a student for a few minor errors is like saying that roger federer is an amateur at tennis for double-faulting in a match.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
have you ever heard Sabine Meyer or Karl Leister having a squeak?
Don't you realize that a squeak is in itself very immature, indicating that your embouchure, breath, and pretty much the basics of clarinet are missing?
I don;t know why people are making me say over and over again.
For older players(maybe like David Shifrin at the time you saw him), squeaks are relatively excusable because their age will catch up with them. But this guy Mate is a young guy.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
when you use advanced technique, the basic assumption is that you have mastered the basics, so you would like to show off your skills by trying new ones. a squeak disqualifies him in that aspect.
and, just to prevent further misunderstanding, I disapprove not only of Mate, but most of the younger players these days for the same reason.
So don't label me as a "guy who has antagonism to Mate in especial" or anything, because I'm an amateur clarinetist with a firm standard of music.
"Don't you realize that a squeak is in itself very immature, indicating that your embouchure, breath, and pretty much the basics of clarinet are missing?"
So, you've never squeaked in a performance? You are making yourself look like a total fool. He's greater than you will ever be and he's doing amazing things. A few squeaks don't matter here.
I'd rather here his exciting performance which puts a twist on the standard than someone who plays a very old piece that's been heard many times.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I've squeaked because I'm immature as a player. Why do I make myself look like a total fool? when you call another person names better prove why they deserve to be called so.
Plus, you're missing my point. My point is NOT "don't play this technical piece." It is rather "if you want to play stuff that's this difficult, better do it perfectly."
And Please cut that rants about "you're not better than him so shut up." Why criticize politicians then? they're probably way better than you.
If somebody has the music written on paper (clarinet) it would be great,
couse this is a espectacular concert.

Muchas gracias.

I respect your view, but I'd just like to say that good technique does not always mean excellent musicianship. Even in this video, Mate couldn't handle his own techniques, which resulted in a squeak in the end.

one squeak and it is not good?
I would love to hear all of you live........
And better than this.....

When players use dazzling technique, the underlying basis is that he had mastered all of it perfectly, which means that a squeak is critical. Most professionals do not have squeaks in their performances, and that leaves a big hole. I would also like to criticize your "If you can't do beter, shut up" logic. Then Why are there critics at all?
dodddd29383 3 years ago
And you will agree, squeak is small thing comparing to all other more important details.....

and you haven't answered my claim either, that brilliant technique does not always mean good musicianship. I've never said that Mate's a bad player. I'm just saying that he's focused too much on technique, which is, sadly, the trend of most young musicians these days.
dodddd29383 3 years ago
Yes,that is true......Mate also have sile and he's not 'young generation' because in concerts I'w been he played Bach,Mozart, penderecki, and Kupferman moonflowers baby and it was with 'full stile' each piece. I agree, technique is over used in clarinet performing. Music is much more important.......When I get those records I'll contact you and send it..........

did any of you recognize a squeak? overuse of technique, I guess. Although I appreciate the brilliant technique of the player, this video made me think why composers write music for a certain instrument, not just a general instrument.

Dear dodddd29383,
if You have ever heard a real clarinettist, you would know that a squeak is nothing compared to one's perfect performance of the piece which is marvelous by itself. This is the most difficult piece for clarinet ever. He brought such an open-minded approach to the piece, which propelled his musicianship to a whole another level.

dear akandrija,
squeaks are for students. Pros should not have any squeaks. Why try to play a piece you can't even handle?
Also, in case you don't know, many modern composers write even harder pieces for clarinet, but in a way that somehow shows the beauty of the clarinet sound.
dodddd29383 3 years ago
dodddd29383,
squeaks are for students? have you ever been to a live performance? i heard david shifrin squeak in a performance of the poulenc sonata, but i guess he isn't a "pro" like you. your comparison of this guy to a student for a few minor errors is like saying that roger federer is an amateur at tennis for double-faulting in a match.

have you ever heard Sabine Meyer or Karl Leister having a squeak?
Don't you realize that a squeak is in itself very immature, indicating that your embouchure, breath, and pretty much the basics of clarinet are missing?
I don;t know why people are making me say over and over again.
For older players(maybe like David Shifrin at the time you saw him), squeaks are relatively excusable because their age will catch up with them. But this guy Mate is a young guy.

when you use advanced technique, the basic assumption is that you have mastered the basics, so you would like to show off your skills by trying new ones. a squeak disqualifies him in that aspect.
and, just to prevent further misunderstanding, I disapprove not only of Mate, but most of the younger players these days for the same reason.
So don't label me as a "guy who has antagonism to Mate in especial" or anything, because I'm an amateur clarinetist with a firm standard of music.
dodddd29383 3 years ago
"Don't you realize that a squeak is in itself very immature, indicating that your embouchure, breath, and pretty much the basics of clarinet are missing?"
So, you've never squeaked in a performance? You are making yourself look like a total fool. He's greater than you will ever be and he's doing amazing things. A few squeaks don't matter here.
I'd rather here his exciting performance which puts a twist on the standard than someone who plays a very old piece that's been heard many times.
