Craig, what if my mix was too hot when I added the yeast? Will this cause any disruption to fermentation? If so, am I able to add more yeast when is cools?
@superfuzzdanno Yes you defiantly should. Coopers say it all comes sterilized, but it doesn't hurt to wash with hot water before your first use. You wouldn't want to ruin your first batch and then be disheartened by having to throw away 23 liters of beer!
Great vid I just brought a new kit after not brewing beer for the last 5 years they seem like a good kit , just put a new coopers english bitter in the drum cant wait ;)
Craig, quick question.....can you use this new Coopers DIY equipment to brew beer with other kinds of beer ingredient kits (Brewer's best, etc), or your own recipes, or do you have to use ONLY Cooper's products with this new equipment?
Craig don't worry about sounding commercial.. You honestly give credit where it's due.. Everyone does it.. If there's a bargain at Kmart, I tell my friends.. If there's good new equipment at a shop I tell my mates...If there's an awesome way or product to make awesome beer you let everyone know.. There is no more noble cause in man-land.. Keep it up mate,
@adenhawke those of us that have enjoyed Craigs videos, and have had the opportunity to chat with him know he does this out of love for beer making and enjoys sharing his passion with us all, and because someone is passionate about a product, or hobby doesn't mean they are commercializing it, and it appears that way so what.
@SuperPooass <<< WTF?? LOL -- Anyways add more sugar/malt. I've found that Half as much again on top of the recommended amount is about the limit as the taste gets a bit to "alcoholly" and the beer is a bit yuck.. so try 1.5Kg of dextrose.. or 1.75- 2Kg of LDME (light dry malt extract) or a combination of them both..Try adding hops too to improve the taste and aroma.
@CraigTube I started off my first Coopers DIY Beer kit this weekend. I'd been watching brewing videos for the past month or so to make sure I knew what I was doing, including yours, so thanks a lot for the information and opinions! The whole process was as simple as it looked, and I'm looking forward to some good beer in a few weeks time :)
May have launched into my first brew a little too eagerly. Looks like the Brew Enhancer hasn't dissolved fully (properly). Any advice or will it sort itself out and dissolve naturally? Thx.
@CraigTube Hmm, too late. Assumed it was brew enhancer that didn't dissolve. Gave it a good stir up same time as i removed the ring. Garden might be getting some nutrients soon... Great vids by the way. Will be a little more patient and careful next time!
@HRHooChicken I would never boast a product that I didn't believe in. I'm not a telemarketer. To your question.. No I don't. However, if using my link to buy the kit lets them know that it was bought because of me, it can't hurt, can it?
@CraigTube Yeah i know sorry im just being a douche. By the way i made coopers lager and it tastes awful. it has a 'homebrew' taste to it, ie theres this weird tinge that sticks in my throat. Any comments on that?
STOP SMACKING YOUR LIPS...its making me thirsty. Thanks for the review. I think my pops and I are going to start brewing (we live 700 miles apart but we are going to share the experience separately). Cheers!
How long can u leave the beer in the tub after fermentation is done ,made a batch beer and left it for a few weeks will it be fine as long as its left alone.
PS.. thankyou Craig for your remark about clear fermenters. My friend and I have always believed they should be clear enough to see what's happening rather than opaque or white.
I like to monitor my beer but hate opening the fermenter if I can help it.
I also like the look of the coopers fermenter in this kit because it has feet.. Why didn't they do this sooner? :) Much more stable than a towel or other under the fermenter :)
Home brewing is the best and my friend and I love Craig's videos.
You really can't beat brewing your own beer whether it's in kit form or making your own mashes.
Believe me you'll be watching that fermenter all the time LOL
Two of my favorite kit beers at the moment are the Coopers English Bitter and Tom Caxton's Dark Real Ale. I did them earlier in the year and I've just stocked up for Xmas.
Plus, you can even experiement with kit beers and add what you want to enhance them if you're brave :)
Just looked it up on the internet, this kit costs just above $100 here in Sweden. I am getting one for sure, can barely wait to taste my first batch!
Craig, I just want to say thank you, you do great videos! Detailed but yet ever so simple and to the point. You have really helped me a lot, I've been a beer enthusiast for years and I'm finally gonna make my own brew.
So i bought this kit about 5 weeks ago now after seeing a few of your videos, and now i can sit back with some mates and enjoy a nice cold one, exactly how i like it. Cheers craig, you've passed the homebrew bug onto me.
I raise my glass to you!
Also to anyone thinking of getting this kit, go for it. I had no troubles my first attempt (no previous experience) and it tasted great!
Have to say you make it look so easy. Been dying to try my hand at making a beer for years. I just have to get the wife to give me the green light and i am in. thanks for the videos. Best brewing vid on youtube. PERIOD. cheers
Thanks for your videos...I will be a Cooper's DIY kit on Friday. So stoked about this and your review of the stout put me over the edge. Thanks much for your effort and education.
Hi, I wanted to buy my boyfriend a beer making kit but haven't got a clue where to start or what to buy. Thankfully for video made the choice easier and I am sure with this kit I can't go wrong. I hope this kit is ok for Ale brewing too.
@CraigTube Great!!! I am getting him the "Home Brew English Bitter Starter kit" then I gonna put a tv in the shed and my life will be a bliss. Thanks for the reply x
Hey craig! i bought this kit today and i have a question: the DVD says that for the first time you dont need to use sanitiser only hot water, should i follow these instructions or go for the sanitiser?
Hey man! Your videos are awesome! The 1st batch i made with the malt extract the kit came with ended up being crud. I believe this is because I didn't sanatise it but used boiling water. I recommend everyone to buy a sanatizing solution to wash it first and then for subsequent batches. Every batch I have made since with using the sanatizer came out perfect! I recommend the Mexican Cerveza from Coopers for a great light tasting beer.
Thank you for this video. I also have their original fermenter and was wondering what this new one was all about. Your video was dead on with all the info. Thank you again!
I have a question for you: if you do less than 23 liters (for example 9, as a lot of brewferm kits), will the "brown ring" come in the extra piece anyway or inside the fermenter? Thanks & Cheers!
Craig... I'm interested in these kits because you can do a lager style brew seemingly without having to adjust temperatures for colder activated yeasts. I have a lot of home brew equipment already and bottles... yadda yadda yadda.... My question is this:
Do they sell the ingredient kits only so you can use them with your own current brew equipment or do you have to use the DIY Cooper's kit? May be a dumb question but any insight would be helpful. Post a link for the ingredient kits if possible
@sjp6920 You can buy the separate ingredients at makebeer (dot) net . Get there through the link on my website craigfarraway (dot) com . Click on the DIY banner and that will take you to their site where you can fine all the separate kits.
dont worry craig. you have been on this site posting videos long enough that people should know it wasnt an advertisement. at the same time people cant expect you to do all you do for free and still keep it free for the viewers. amazon also does a program that gives you a percentage of what people buy after they click your link from amazon. i couldnt remember if you already had that setup or not so just passing on the info
Still loving your videos and can't wait for your next instalment.
Problem is that I like to watch you while I'm commuting to work or listen of I'm driving in my car (it's ok I don't watch and drive!)
Living in the UK we don't tend to have a very good mobile data network around these areas so I often find myself just getting into your videos only to have my fun stopped by lack of network :(
I don't know if it would cost anything but would it be possible for you to publish all your
Awesome Craig! Another great, informative brewing video. YOU got me into homebrew. You've saved me a ton of money too! So far in the last 7 months I've been brewing I've made ale, lager, European lager, draught lager, whiskey, cider x 3, and numerous inmate brews. I've always wanted to home brew but never had the confidence or information. Your YouTube channel made that possible for me so...Craigtube...I salute you!!
Craig, long time fan here. Just brewed my second batch with the original Coopers kit. I am on day 8 and I am still getting bubbling from the airlock. I checked the hydormeter and it only reads 1.15. Maybe I didnt put in enough sugar? Can I put in more sugar now to boost the alcohol content? What should I do?
@flafishboy Sounds like it's just not finished yet. Leave it for another few days. It might be a bit cold where your fermenter is. Adding more sugar is not recommended.
Craig even thou I have moved to allgrain brewing u have been a great help to me and I love your vids and it doesn't look like a commercial to me keep up the good work and I love to hear about new products on the Market cheers
Craig even thou I moved to allgrain brewing u were a great help to me and still are, love your vids and It doesn't look like a commercial to me big thumbs up and keep up the good work
Hi Craig. Thanks for another well-made, informative video. I personally only brew in glass but can see the merit of this kit for people starting out in the hobby. Thanks for all of your work promoting our hobby.
Just so we are clear, I have no problem with anyone liking this video. If I liked it, I'd say so and click the thumbs up button ! Craig makes a ton of great vids and he seems like a great guy. I like most of his stuff just not this . I think he deserves to make some cash from his ads and partnerships! I just advocate people thinking for themselves and voting for what they like. If free thinking and voting according to my opinion makes people upset, I really don't care=)
@jaygnar I see your point. I only put the "rate this video" bubble there to counter the few trolls who ALWAYS thumb me down. I noticed one of my videos was thumbed down only 30 seconds after it went live. If people are going to hate on me like that just for the sake of it, I should be allowed to take steps to recoup. Ratings are important in getting your videos higher on the search results. Some people fake the titles and thumbnails of their videos to get more views... I would never do that.
@CraigTube I understand your position and I am completely supportive of your use of affiliate programs as well as the partnership program on youtube. I feel that you have every right to make some income from the massive amount of time and effort that you put into your videos. I am looking forward to whatever you have planned for you next installment. No hate here man, just freedom of expression and I know you support that! Cheers man! Don't worry about trolls, you got too much talent for that=)
@pablitocopado Not unless you make a huge wave of air. CO2 is heavy and sits on top of the beer like a cloud. It protects the beer from oxygen. It's no different than taking a hydrometer sample before bottling, or removing the lid to set up your siphon for bottling or kegging. It won't hurt it unless you leave the lid off for an extended period, or cause a disturbance that might ruin the CO2 layer.
@TheJackoburger Give my supplier a call. completehomebrewing (dot) com . They might be able to ship you out one. Talk to Gord and let him know I sent you.
Was that the only difference,The message at the beginning of the video? I wouldn't even worry what people think, you the truth Craig and that's all that matters! Thumbs up for this video,Take care!
@Borbuster It allows you to clean it while the ring is still moist, making it easier to get off. You don't have to remove it if you don't want to. I do. That stuff comes off much easier while it's fresh, and requires less scrubbing which can scratch your fermenter and promote bacteria.
CraigTube = best homebrewing videos on YouTube. He showed me how easy it is to make beer at home and thanks to him I make MY OWN BEER at HOME !!! And YES - "Thumb up" !! Thanks Craig !!
@Toops144 I will "like" what I like and "dislike" what I dislike. I don't care whose channel it is or what they sell. That is all I am saying. I have no problem with Craig's income. I just don't like watching commercials, so I "dislike" this. It seems silly to me that he would put "Like this if you think it contains useful info." There are tons of videos with plenty of useful info that I don't like. I "dislike" those as well. That's my right as a viewer and what the buttons are there for.
I think that any equipment kit, and there are many on the market, is a great way to get into the hobby. If you want to enhance your experience to a craft level, you will use 90% of the equipment that came with your kit. ROCK ON CRAIG!!!!!
I have a giant 40 something litre primary fermenter and it basically is the same method but word of advice-I once had the lid open and was taking a peak and took in a deep breath and it burned! There is still a layer of CO2 in the container so be careful!
I understand that Craig is a nice guy and that he likes to make money, but I won't support this kind of content by "liking" it. If you want to make some bucks and sell some products , that's fine! Please go for it! Heck, get coopers to make beer kits with your face on them and call them "C&C"(Coopers and Craigtube) if you want. But don't try to improve the ratings on your commercials by telling people to "thumbs up" it for ANY reason other than the fact that they like it.
Yes. No shit....The guy puts all these excellent homebrewing videos....the best on youtube and yes he should make a buck. Stop your bitching people. Craig you can make all the vids you want man I will keep watching. They are great. Keep it up. I too would like to see you do a kit to taste test with this new kit.
Craig, your videos are ALWAYS great. I've seen you referred to as "The Mr. Rogers of homebrewing" (I consider that a major complement). However, this is a video you've already done in the past. I think you're maxxing out on the types of LME vid's that can be shown. I think the viewing public would love to see an all-grain video with that Craig Farraway quality we've come to expect!
Assume the kit comes with sanitizer and yeast (not mentioned). When purchasing, how do you tell the old kit from the new based on the unopened box? A good friend of mine (from Canada) said when he used to homebrew he actually put clear plastic wrap (cellophane) over the fermentation bucket, hence no need for an airlock. Same "burp" method that you mentioned. Lastly, why take the krausen ring container off? Why not just leave it there the entire fermentation period?
@zodiak3000 Who gives a shit, he's been making vids for 5 years and if he makes a few bucks he deserves it.. He clearly stated he is not affiliated, i personally wish he was make a buck good lord
@zodiak3000 PART 1. The coupon code and banner on my page are from makebeer (dot) net, who are a re seller / retail outlet for Coopers products. They are not Coopers. They created the banner for me and set up the code. They did that as a good gesture to help promote me, since I have helped their sales just by using the products in my videos, which I have done quite a bit but without EVER being asked to by anyone. More....
@CraigTube PART 2. Anyone can join programs like that and place ads on their page. Go to Amazon and join their affiliate program, then you can place ads to any of their products on your site and if people buy from your links, you make a percentage. One would hope that you approve of the products you sell and stand behind them. It is extremely common for people to put links on their pages to products they believe in. More....
@CraigTube People are always asking me what they can do to repay me for showing them this stuff. I don't feel that asking for a couple of clicks here and there is doing anyone any harm, and that's how people can give back if they want to. Again, not much to ask. Furthermore, I'm not about to ruin my reputation by pushing products I don't personally like or use. I did the MXL mic review. If I was to place a banner on my page to a merchant that sells that mic, is that all of a sudden wrong?
@zodiak3000 Hang on Zodiak, Craig has done nothing wrong here. Look, go to makebeer dot net, at the bottom of that website, see the "Become an affiliate" - anyone can sign up, you get to pick banner ads or coupon codes that will let you get a tiny piece of the profit if someone buys. Makebeer is a great guy, he imports Coopers products to all of N. America. He occasionally sends free stuff to those of us who already make youtube vids using Coopers, as a customer support thing. No biggie.
@steeljan Thanks for the clarification. Not trying to be a dick or call anyone out, just curious since the video did seem marketed. Craigs vids got me into homebrewing about 2 years ago. I now have won several awards this year for my AG batches. Without the ease of his begining vids that showed how simple brewing can be, I may not have taken the passion for brewing on at all. Cheers...
@zenonko You don't need an air lock. It's only for wusses and those who worry too much. In europe we never use em. Who cares if Craig is paid by Coopers. Afterall it's what TSA would have loved to have had. Just be grateful we have someone making such videos. Otherwise f*ck off if the Craig/Coopers idea troubles you.
I like the unboxing video but I don't see the difference in the one before. I bought the old version of the Coopers Brewery kit and brewed many batches. I love it. The only thing I don't like is that I am used to beer with higher alcohol content. When I tried to increase alcohol it ruined the taste of the beer. I would like to try again, do you have any recommendations to get the beer up to about 6% without ruining the taste?
@duwbryd I'll jump in here and try to help you duwbryd, if that's okay. If you are increasing/adding corn sugar to boost your alcohol but don't like the taste, try using dry malt extract DME or liquid malt extract LME instead. Since DME and LME are condensed malted grain, it gives the yeast more sugar to turn to alcohol while also adding more malt character to the beer. A couple of pounds of DME or about 3lbs of LME should get you where you want to go. Cheers!
Craig, I love all your vids. I think it was the (info-mercial) music last time in the background combined with the very elaborate set-ups you had. You do a fine job and people need to sit back, take a sip, view and enjoy. I know you do with my vids, and I enjoy your comments. Keep up the good work.
you seem a little defensive, like you knew it wasnt your style of videos and it was like a paid product review. you put a disclaimer at the start of the video, than a pop up, than defend comments
@n2prs After spending two nights making the video, I realized that it sounded a bit commercial. I am a video editor by profession and find it hard sometimes to pull back and make less professional videos, just so people won't think I work for some company, advertising their products. Yes, it's a bit disheartening because I know myself that this is not a paid ad, but if it was, why would that matter? So is every single TV commercial we've ever seen, and we still buy those products.
@CraigTube... honestly craig it doesnt sound like a commercial to me... it sounds like a video you made telling people that just want to make beer about a kit that you found that really works... and it does work very well... because of your first video i saw i bought one and i can tell you i am making beer that is better than most store bought beer... i am currently brewing an english lager... you are an inspiration to us guys and gals that just want to make our own home brew...
Great video. Always been interested in making my own.

dont worry craig. you have been on this site posting videos long enough that people should know it wasnt an advertisement. at the same time people cant expect you to do all you do for free and still keep it free for the viewers. amazon also does a program that gives you a percentage of what people buy after they click your link from amazon. i couldnt remember if you already had that setup or not so just passing on the info

Hi Craig

What should I do?
flafishboy 9 months ago
@flafishboy Sounds like it's just not finished yet. Leave it for another few days. It might be a bit cold where your fermenter is. Adding more sugar is not recommended.

If free thinking and voting according to my opinion makes people upset, I really don't care=)
jaygnar 9 months ago
@jaygnar I see your point. I only put the "rate this video" bubble there to counter the few trolls who ALWAYS thumb me down. I noticed one of my videos was thumbed down only 30 seconds after it went live. If people are going to hate on me like that just for the sake of it, I should be allowed to take steps to recoup. Ratings are important in getting your videos higher on the search results. Some people fake the titles and thumbnails of their videos to get more views... I would never do that.
CraigTube 9 months ago
@CraigTube I understand your position and I am completely supportive of your use of affiliate programs as well as the partnership program on youtube. I feel that you have every right to make some income from the massive amount of time and effort that you put into your videos. I am looking forward to whatever you have planned for you next installment. No hate here man, just freedom of expression and I know you support that! Cheers man! Don't worry about trolls, you got too much talent for that=)
jaygnar 9 months ago
Hey, but when you take out the krausen ring and place back the lid the fermenter gets full of air, right?
pablitocopado 9 months ago
@pablitocopado Not unless you make a huge wave of air. CO2 is heavy and sits on top of the beer like a cloud. It protects the beer from oxygen. It's no different than taking a hydrometer sample before bottling, or removing the lid to set up your siphon for bottling or kegging. It won't hurt it unless you leave the lid off for an extended period, or cause a disturbance that might ruin the CO2 layer.

Was that the only difference,The message at the beginning of the video? I wouldn't even worry what people think, you the truth Craig and that's all that matters! Thumbs up for this video,Take care!
jakeanddar 9 months ago
@jakeanddar I also took out the cheesy music Jake. That might be what made it more like an ad, which I didn't want.
CraigTube 9 months ago
What's the point of removing the "krausen ring" before the fermentation is finished?
Borbuster 9 months ago
@Borbuster It allows you to clean it while the ring is still moist, making it easier to get off. You don't have to remove it if you don't want to. I do. That stuff comes off much easier while it's fresh, and requires less scrubbing which can scratch your fermenter and promote bacteria.

CraigTube = best homebrewing videos on YouTube. He showed me how easy it is to make beer at home and thanks to him I make MY OWN BEER at HOME !!! And YES - "Thumb up" !! Thanks Craig !!
coelian1701 9 months ago

Good instruction video Craig! Nice fermenter, hope i can buy that new fermenter also in Holland. Cheers m8!
homebeerbrewery 9 months ago
I have a giant 40 something litre primary fermenter and it basically is the same method but word of advice-I once had the lid open and was taking a peak and took in a deep breath and it burned! There is still a layer of CO2 in the container so be careful!
SudsY1979 9 months ago

Craig, your videos are ALWAYS great. I've seen you referred to as "The Mr. Rogers of homebrewing" (I consider that a major complement). However, this is a video you've already done in the past. I think you're maxxing out on the types of LME vid's that can be shown. I think the viewing public would love to see an all-grain video with that Craig Farraway quality we've come to expect!
dcostell 9 months ago
Craig:
Assume the kit comes with sanitizer and yeast (not mentioned). When purchasing, how do you tell the old kit from the new based on the unopened box? A good friend of mine (from Canada) said when he used to homebrew he actually put clear plastic wrap (cellophane) over the fermentation bucket, hence no need for an airlock. Same "burp" method that you mentioned. Lastly, why take the krausen ring container off? Why not just leave it there the entire fermentation period?

@zodiak3000 PART 1. The coupon code and banner on my page are from makebeer (dot) net, who are a re seller / retail outlet for Coopers products. They are not Coopers. They created the banner for me and set up the code. They did that as a good gesture to help promote me, since I have helped their sales just by using the products in my videos, which I have done quite a bit but without EVER being asked to by anyone. More....
CraigTube 9 months ago
@CraigTube PART 2. Anyone can join programs like that and place ads on their page. Go to Amazon and join their affiliate program, then you can place ads to any of their products on your site and if people buy from your links, you make a percentage. One would hope that you approve of the products you sell and stand behind them. It is extremely common for people to put links on their pages to products they believe in. More....
CraigTube 9 months ago
@CraigTube People are always asking me what they can do to repay me for showing them this stuff. I don't feel that asking for a couple of clicks here and there is doing anyone any harm, and that's how people can give back if they want to. Again, not much to ask. Furthermore, I'm not about to ruin my reputation by pushing products I don't personally like or use. I did the MXL mic review. If I was to place a banner on my page to a merchant that sells that mic, is that all of a sudden wrong?
CraigTube 9 months ago
@zodiak3000 Hang on Zodiak, Craig has done nothing wrong here. Look, go to makebeer dot net, at the bottom of that website, see the "Become an affiliate" - anyone can sign up, you get to pick banner ads or coupon codes that will let you get a tiny piece of the profit if someone buys. Makebeer is a great guy, he imports Coopers products to all of N. America. He occasionally sends free stuff to those of us who already make youtube vids using Coopers, as a customer support thing. No biggie.
steeljan 9 months ago
@steeljan Thanks for the clarification. Not trying to be a dick or call anyone out, just curious since the video did seem marketed. Craigs vids got me into homebrewing about 2 years ago. I now have won several awards this year for my AG batches. Without the ease of his begining vids that showed how simple brewing can be, I may not have taken the passion for brewing on at all. Cheers...

zenonko 9 months ago

I would like to try again, do you have any recommendations to get the beer up to about 6% without ruining the taste?
duwbryd 9 months ago

Keep up the good work.
fulldraws 9 months ago
you seem a little defensive, like you knew it wasnt your style of videos and it was like a paid product review. you put a disclaimer at the start of the video, than a pop up, than defend comments
n2prs 9 months ago
@n2prs who cares does he not deserve a few bucks???
kbroberts1 9 months ago
@n2prs After spending two nights making the video, I realized that it sounded a bit commercial. I am a video editor by profession and find it hard sometimes to pull back and make less professional videos, just so people won't think I work for some company, advertising their products. Yes, it's a bit disheartening because I know myself that this is not a paid ad, but if it was, why would that matter? So is every single TV commercial we've ever seen, and we still buy those products.
CraigTube 9 months ago 5
@CraigTube... honestly craig it doesnt sound like a commercial to me... it sounds like a video you made telling people that just want to make beer about a kit that you found that really works... and it does work very well... because of your first video i saw i bought one and i can tell you i am making beer that is better than most store bought beer... i am currently brewing an english lager... you are an inspiration to us guys and gals that just want to make our own home brew...
