  • Just realised this was my first ever gig :). my mum and dad took me and my sister to see him, Got a signed photo too.

  • Well made a grown man Cry . . .Women Never understood them

  • reminds me of a long ago love

  • I don't get this. I don't get, at 49 years old, that this song speaks to me, and brings me tears, just like it did when I was 14. Oh, screw it, it makes me so fulfilled and happy. Soft as poo.

  • Love Val Doonican! even at the age of 24 =D

  • Glenn Campbell's version is the definitive one.

No way! Bob Lind and Val Doonican had the originals and hits.

  • Dad had his LP, and we used to listened to it on a regular basis. I played it as one of 3 songs at mums funeral.

  • ho what a voice took me back to when i used to lay in front of th tv as a kid thanks

  • Just excellent and nice. There are the nostalgic memories again...

  • Brings back so many memories..

  • Our Mothers & Fathers were right when they said Val, Frank, Matt, Englebert were the real stars of the 60's.

  • A great entertainer and a real gentleman, I'm currently reading his new autobiography, I highly reccomend it

  • GREAT VAL DOONICAN cover of a beautiful haunting song ELUSIVE BUTTERFLY.

You can dump all the loud rock, metal. punk, rap crap loud noises in the garbage

and enjoy beautiful melodic songs like this one.

  • Fond memories which always brings a tear to my eye. Thanks for sharing this wonderful song. x

  • pure class

  • Delightful inclusion here of the Val cover of a classic No1 that never quite made it in the UK due to the 2 versions being on release simultaneously. We never found the answer to why Val changed one line of the song rhyming with canyons of your mind from

'dreams you left behind' to the obscure

    'someone I used to be'.

Maybe someone here would know. Thanks for this, 45.

  • Lovely

  • This is truly awful - even by Val Doonican standards. Much prefer Lynyrd Skynrd's version.

  • @buckley54 Your opinion only

  • love the original by bob lind. this one is a memory tune in it's own right as well.

  • one night when he appeared at wakefield theatre club Iwas working the spotlight I fell asleep while operating it and was awoken by val shouting I am over here my spot was shining on a table 12 ft away from the stage.

  • Good version, but Bob Lind's is the one I prefer.

  • lots of fond memories watching the Val Doonican show sitting on my late fathers lap. He used to tease me about my affections for Val!! I was only about 4 or 5. Thanks for sharing!

  • @Batchtj me to mf

  • Great stuff.

  • My wifes favorite. V's song

  • Beautiful song. One of my favourites from Val

  • Dont hate this..but it kept the original by Bob Lind off No 1..it got to 5 too..and a much superior version IMHO

    Jim

  • I don't think Bob Lind minded too much he got royalities for his and Val's version!

  • Isn't it great though, that the original masterpiece by Bob Lind is the only one anyone remembers now! Nothing against Val, but Bob Lind's original has a magic about it that has never been equalled (and I'm only 48! It was my favourite song when I was 4 :)

  • This song is one of my favourites - I grew up listening to Val Doonican. Thank you for putting this song. It brings back some beautiful memories...

  • One of the best!

  • My nans Fav song :) her funaral son :(

  • Val Doonican, Jim Reeves was all my mum used to play in the house on the radio-gram growing up, awesome silky smooth voice's, running around the back garden on a orange skied summer evening, drinking home made lemonade as a kid.... sweet memories

  • @RenKinRaM Me too. Here in England, we were not allowed to listen to the Beatles, Rolling Stones or Tom Jones - rough, naughty boys. The beautiful sounds of Val and Kim Reeves, soft golden tones and the wonderful smell of my darlin mum cooking and humming in the kitchen and the laughter and excitement when my dad got home from work. The 1970's were our golden years. Our mum's and dad din't have 2 pennies to rub together, but we were so happy.

  • It's wonderful how a piece of music evokes happy memories of a particular time and place for one. This always takes me back to a magical weekend during the summer of 1969 when I imprisoned my neighbour, Steven, in my cellar for almost two days. His dog, Sparky, kept shitting on my lawn so I gave Steven a few thrashings with a length of rubber hose. This seemed to be playing on my transistor radio all the time - probably just a trick of memory, but happy times indeed. Thank you for posting this.

  • A nostalgic, haunting song from a different era. For me, it evokes such beautiful memories of golden childhood summers in the sixties which seemed to last forever...and my mother & I watching Val 'rocking' gently on television. So this is for her - Val was her favourite singer. Thanks for sharing!

  • I know exactly what you mean. The 60's was a great time to be a child.Magical memories. Thanks God for giving me wonderful parents

  • I consider myself a bit of a rocker, but I also know great music when I hear it; and here it is.

  • A real singer whose tone and richness is hard to beat. I remember watching his shows with great fondness growing up in the sixties. This is to my mum.

  • Reminds me of when I was still a young girl but Val Doonica-s voice never dies!

    Thanks for this video.

  • just heard this on BBC4 prog about Val. Just had to hear it again - great!

  • Thanks Val for reminding me of this! Yes Val was a great relaxed crooner in the style of Dean Martin! Why don't the TV Companies bring back some real variety shows!

  • Just love this! Always was a favourite on mine.

  • this is for u ,my grandad x and nanna x

  • Great memory! I was five when this came out and I still remember hearing it on the radio when the April snow was so deep the daffodil heads were just peeping out of the drifts.

  • Way to go Val. what happy memories this song brings me! thank you for post.

  • Magnificent.

  • 5 stars for val almost see the rocking chair ...
