Though it's stereotypical. Many black performers were being humorous and not trying to be a buffoon. It added to the creativeness of their songs and dances. I don't see the charm and humor in black artists today that I see in past black performers, just behinds shaking in front of the camera, which to me is ten times worse. There were many white performers who cooned or made funny faces too. A lot of black performers weren't trying to coon or buffoon.
