The funniest aspect of this is the inability to grasp the very simple concept that running the 2nd half of a race 4 1/5th's seconds slower than the 1st half of the race means that it is impossible to be accelerating. Rate X Time = Distance
It's become such a puppy mill now horse racing has, that they just crank them out and if the horse's EQB is not right or off, then a lot of buyer will pass them over. Google EQB for Race Horses and it will give you a few links to check out. They judge a horse's gait, stride, everything and these folks will record it on video and then play it back in slow motion and show you why the horse runs the way he does and if he is worth buying or not.
The American arrogance and ignorance is famose . If a horse wins in USA, without ever leaving his country, it automatically becomes the best in history. Out of your Truman Show , out the Hollywood movies , in the real world, everyone knows ..the best horse ever (gallop) is the Italian " RIBOT ", the best trotter ever is Italian " VARENNE " the best jockey ever is the Italian " FRANKIE DETTORI." All people can check these names on internet and make an assessment of the results.
secretariet is legend =) btw we cant make compartion between them ... it's different years maybe we can say dubai millenium is the heir of secretariet :D like calvin borel and george wolf who rided seabiscuit XD
Conduit ran faster than Secretariat in the BC Turf, TWICE. 2.24 is a good time by American dirt standards, but nothing special in world terms. He was just a big fish in a small pond.
@tigerboy19662:24 is the WORLD RECORD. I had to smile at your comment that "it's a good time for American dirt standards, but nothing special in world terms". U really sound ignorant. Check the facts before u post any more comments. It's embarassing. And that "big fish in a small pond" still is the only horse to set all 3 track records for the TC, holds 2 still 40 years later...and is the ONLY ATHLETE in history that broke records by running each quarter mile faster than the last. Google it.
@cmf4321 world record? Alkaased ran 2:22.1 Japan Cup, 2005. That's nearly two seconds faster than your world record. Secretariat's 2:24 wouldn't have got him into the first ten in that race.
@tigerboy1966 Since you're not big into research...I just did the research for you. You are not correct. A horse named Horlicks held the record, 2:22 in the Japan Cup in 1989, not 2005. So I googled who holds the world record for a mile and a half...Secretariat. You should research information before you share your opinion of the facts. I've never lost a bet yet:-) Races are run on different surfaces...so that differentiates the world record. Secretariat had a career only until he was 3!
@cmf4321 Alkaased exists (check pedigree query) and he also clocked 2:22 at the JC, but like I stated in my previous comment, it's no big deal as this is a super fast track, like many in Japan. Sec still holds the WR for 12f on dirt, and no horse has ever come near equalling that. Besides Sham, Sec crushed another G1 winner at the race who didn't fizzle out: My Gallant, who has beaten both Our Native and Forego (both major stakes winners). Sec set WR for every 1/4 (except 1st) at Belmont! Wow!!
@rcschumann I don't think that WR for 12f on dirt is important as the distance is rarely contested. The Belmont Stakes is the ONLY Group/Grade One race on that surface and trip anywhere in the world. We have no idea of what times top class older horses would record if given the chance.
@tigerboy1966 Of course times are not important in determining greatness. It's the versatility a horse displays on the track and the manner in which he wins races that sets him apart. Sec's time at Belmont should take a back seat to HOW he won the race - going each quarter faster than the one before, all through the race, when others would have been slowing down drastically in the stretch. He has won races giving up ground on the outside, from the inside, on the lead, from far back. cont...
@tigerboy1966 To continue: this is what sets him apart. At the Marlboro Cup he beat SIX champion older horses, set the WR for 1 1/8 and then set a 1 1/4 time of 1:57 4/5, PULLING UP past the wire! - an unofficial WR later equalled by Bid on a fast track in CA. Check out his monster last-to-first round the treacherous 1st turn at Pimlico (Preakness Stakes) - dubbed the "suicide move" by Beyer. It's this audacity and know-how that makes him unique. I would put the great Nijinsky next to him.
@tigerboy1966 Are you serious?! Japan has the fastest tracks in the world, and the Tokyo racecourse (which runs slightly downhill) is no exception. Several no name horses have clocked under 2:24 at the Japan Cup (who's Marvelous Crown?). And Deep Impact's WR 2 mile clocking at Kyoto (another fast track) is also no big deal when you consider Meiner Kitz (who?) clocked only 1 sec slower in 09 (still faster than anywhere else). Secretariat did the impossible at Belmont '73.
@tigerboy1966 ......are you a complete idiot or what?...two different tracks and 32 years apart and you're comparing that??...Please shut up now before all your credibility is shot
@tigerboy1966 BTW, no human or horse in history broke track records by accelerating each quarter mile faster than the last. Secretariat accomplished a feat no other athlete has in history. Check all you want. He was the miracle horse. What he did was supernatural. So don't compare him to any other horse. There isn't even one human in his league. We'll never see another Secretariat. And no one will ever see what happened in 1973 again.
Enjoy it on youtube. The supernatural will only happen once.
Dubai Millenium's best performance was 1:59.50 for 2000m as a mature 4yr old.
Secretariat covered 2011.68m on at least THREE separate occasions faster than this as a mere 3yr old: Kentucky Derby in 1:59.40, 1:59:00 during the Belmont and then 1:57.80 while pulling up after the Marlboro. In other words, he was getting faster with age. Based on this last race and DM's best 2000m, Sec beats DW by exactly 13 1/3 LENGTHS over 2011.68m (1 1/4 miles). Not even close.
no horse can ev warm sec. up so dont even think of comparing him to any other horse he was 1 in a million as far as im worried there probally will nev be another horse like him
Secretariat definetivly, even all mighty Man O War and little seabiscuit are better race horses. Dubai M.. is carrying northern dancers blood, I too I am a fan of the great Northern Dancer
I too tried to find an european horse that can match Man O War or secretariat, still haven't found, help!
native Dancer me again Courtney shit ride cost him immortality the most important horse for breeding of the 20th century you morons don't know that. Man O war sired a triple crown winner, secretariat did not do that yet in America Then Gallant fox sired a triple crown winner omaha but for racing go back read up about there fore fathers It will take you right back to England mate the 3 stallians from North afRica and arabia okay dude
@pchd1965 Sec would have beaten all those horses you mentioned without much trouble. No horse has ever won a race the way he won Belmont - going each 1/4 faster than the previous one, throughout a gruelling 1 1/2 mile race. He won two big G1's on turf, at 1 1/2 and 1 5/8, and would have killed those Euro champs on this surface. He was the most versatile on the track - winning on the inside, giving up huge ground on the outside, on the lead, from far back. Secretariat was the best.
@rcschumann Ya but the difference is that American trainers can administer anti blood bursting meds which is illegal in Europe because it aids blood flow to the heart..
@STHFGDBY But these meds don't aid in performance, otherwise Dr. Fager's 1 mile WR from '68 would have been broken long time ago - look how many 1 mile races are run each year in the US. Also, Sec's Derby record would also have been broken, as well Spectacular Bid's WR for 1 1/4 miles. Sec was checked after each race for drugs, and his trainer imposed strenuous workouts on him before each race, otherwise he didn't perform well - legendary workouts he wouldn't need if he was on the juice.
@rcschumann The drug They permit is Lasix and though it's not performance enhancing like steroids it still aids the horse, many horses suffer this problem and their performance is seriously diminished if the horse breaks a blood vessel during the race, the horse will only run at 50% of its capacity. Why it's use banned in Europe is open for debate but it is seen as cheating and a trainer caught using it will be punished.
@STHFGDBY If Lasix is frowned upon in Europe and seen as potentially harmful to the horses, how come UK/European trainers like Aidan O'Brien give their horses this drug when they race here? Cape Blanco was given Lasix in all his races in the US, and Goldikova is also given this drug by her trainer before the BC Mile races. There are US trainers who are against it, and Graham Motion, Animal Kingdom's trainer, stated he never administers this drug. AK won the Kentucky Derby without Lasix.
@rcschumann Aidan O' Brien made it clear that after losing a a race in the States 2 years ago he refused to administer his horse Lasix but on reflection he said in future he would consider using it to level the playing field.
@STHFGDBY Like I mentioned in my previous comment, there are horses in the US who don't receive Lasix - Animal Kingdom won the K. Derby without it. Regarding Sec, I don't see how meds would have aided him in any way. He was just a freak, and it was those workouts that got that huge heart of his ready for action (he thrived on them). Lauren would drill him on the day of major races! The morning of the Preakness he worked 5f in 0:57.4, and before the 12f MOW he ran 5f in 0:56.8 (unheard of)!
@rcschumann Well I'm not so sure, The track surface in the states are different than Europes, Our Irish horse See the Stars would have given him a run for his money and so would the French filly Zarkava and not to mention Frankel who won last week, unbeaten in 9 Group ones. It is now claimed that Frankel is the greatest horse ever..
@STHFGDBY To continue from last comment: But I see your point regarding Lasix, and I feel it should be banned, especially since horses in the US have won major races without it. In fact, I read it will be completely banned by the 2013 Breeders Cup races, and this policy should then be taken up by the rest of the organisations here. By the way, the great Alysheba smashed the field in the G1 Woodward without Lasix, his trainer wanting to prove critics wrong that this colt needed meds to win.
@rcschumann Well there you go, they want to ban it for the 2013 breeders cus it does make a difference and Alyshebas trainer and any other trainer can run their horse without Lasix because it is no risk to the horses health, the only cost is if the horse bursts a vessel when running which will not harm the horse but it would cost him the race, horses do recover from broken blood vessels but they are usually off the track for a few months and that can be costly.
@rcschumann It was the Kentucky Derby where he ran each quarter faster...not the Belmont. In the Belmont he broke the track record by 2 3/5 seconds and won by 31 lengths.
@kwgrid Ur incorrect. Secretariat ran each quarter mile faster in the KD AND Belmont. The Belmont is the greatest race in history. He ran each quarter mile faster (starting at 36 mls per hr. & ending at 39 mls per hr.) He did the impossible that day. No human or horse ever matched it in history. He was speeding UP the entire race breaking the TRACK record EACH quarter mile (except 1st) & was still speeding up at the finish line. He still holds the track record for each quarter mile!! Look it up.
@cmf4321 I cannot for the life of me understand why I continue to see posts claiming the Belmont, too, was run faster in each successive quarter. The first 3/4's of the race was run in 1:09 and 4/5th's. The last 3/4's of the race was run in 1:14 and 1/5. The sum is thus, 2:24 flat. You have stated this before only to run away. Definitely math-challenged.
@bbmtge Do your homework and look it up. Google it. He set the track & world record for each quarter mile except the 1st (which he was known for starting slow & speeding up doing what NO horse in history had ever done including today). You're adding up 3 quarters against 1 quarter. In simple words...You are the one who is mathematically challenged. Nothing personal...but you should be embarrased by what you're saying. He ran EACH quarter mile faster. Don't add up 3 quarters as 1 quarter.
@cmf4321 You are without a doubt, the most stupid person on youtube...especially for posting the same false statement over and over ending with "look it up". Let's see how you respond to the 2nd time this is being posted./
@cmf4321 Of course. It's your choice to ignore the facts and live in a fantasy world. you haven't been able to counter with facts that support your CLAIM. So, as before, you choose to run away. Anyone whose position was based on fact would have posted Sec fracitons as I did. You, not only, were unable and unwilling to grasp the initial concept as to the slower second half of the race but now, as predicted, you ignore the acutla posted, per quarter, and cumulative, racing fractions.
@cmf4321 You see, IRRATIONAL people make unsupported claims. They, further, when shown the facts over and again, either refuse to respond or continue with their irrational stance. You have done both. In essence, you can't support your claim and nobody is going to change your mind with the facts. Now...run along to another Sec video and post your fantasy.
@cmf4321 Let's see you post Sec fractions in the Belmont. I did, and it comepltely debunks your fantasy. So...post the fractions, yourself. Did you see the tote board...46 1/5th...1:09 4/5th's...1:59...2:24??? Did you read the DRF or Whitney Tower's SI article on the 1973 Belmont??? You see...that's what is called research as opposed to "google it, look it up" with no ability to back up a claim. Learn a bit of logic before making a fool of yourself. My bet is...you won't.
@bbmtge Thanks for clarifying Sec's Belmont. For a while I used to think that Sec ran negative fractions in the KD as well as Belmont, but it was actually only in the former. So this horse accomplished three distinct and unique feats in the TC races: in the Derby he ran those awesome negative splits and set a time that still stands; in the Preakness he made that frightening move round the first turn, and in the Belmont he displayed miraculous raw power and stamina. The greatest.
@rcschumann The only reason I finally posted the fractions is that this cmf character would not relent with post after post of his fantasy. No need to delve into that area as, per your comment, Sec displayed an unequaled level of raw power and stamina...never before, never since. AND, without exerting himself. I agree with you comepletely...the best ever.
@rcschumann By the way...there is an article in the SI vault by Nack. Sec worked out at Belmont on 3/14/1973. He posted a time of 32 and 3/5th's for a 3/8th's mile workout. Great article.
@bbmtge I didn't read that article, but that's 10.8 seconds a furlong for three furlongs, before his third birthday! People make a big deal when a sprinter or miler makes one sub 11 clocking in a race. Sec made three such clockings in succession in a workout, and he was still a juvenile! You must know about the monster 0:56.8 5f he did on turf shortly before the MOW. That's G1 sprinter speed, and he still had a 12f race coming up - he wasn't even at TC capacity. A horse like no other.
@rcschumann This workout was his final before the start of his 3 YO season on the 17th at, I believe, Aqueduct for the Gotham Mile. Sec foaling date was 3/30/1970. Yes, I am aware of his turf workout prior to the MOW. Nack has said that his workouts had old-timers scratching their heads i.e stakes record times in workouts. I agree, like NO other.
@cmf4321 At the 3/4 pole...which is the halfway point of the race, Sec time was 1:09 and 4/5th's. At the end of the race, which is another 3/4 mile, the time was 2:24. The second half of the race, the last 3/4 mile was, thus, run in 1:14 and 1/5th seconds. How is it that you cannot understand this?
@cmf4321 and now...for the lady in the white hat....read' em and weep. I know what you are going to do even before you do it. you will STILL deny it!!! 1973 Belmont Stakes...
@pchd1965 What do you mean by "no Native Dancer means no Northern Dancer which means no Secretariat"?! That's the dumbest thing I've read - he was not related to either of those horses, you nitwit! What did Native Dancer do to make you think he would beat Secretariat? All his times are slower, and he's not even in the top 5 in Blood Horse. Sec proved his three losses at 3 were flukes (illness, last minute sub etc.) by killing the field after each loss: Derby, Marlboro Cup and MOW Stakes (grass).
miler and American classic distance. I give you some horses that would have beaten him from America and from Europe. Eclipse read about him, man o war read about him, Native Dancer read about him-no Native Dancer means no Northern Dancer which means no Secretariat. In Europe secretariat would ahve been destroyed on grass by Ribot 11/2 read about him, Sea Bird read about him please, Shergar would have beaten him on grass 1/1/4 these were monsters I will continue
@liamobrien06 Sea the who?! Secretariat could give that horse a head start and still win - ON TURF!! His last two races were demolition jobs against older horses at big G1 races on grass. Has your horse ever won on dirt? Oh that's right, with a whopping nine starts under his belt how could he find the time!!
@rcschumann dirt isnt a true reflection of a horse sea the stars won on good ground soft ground and bottomless ground sea the stars is 300 years of breeding built to a peak and to be fair i think frankel would beat all the above he will be a true great aswel its all about breeding and the irish sires are just unreal at the moment
@liamobrien06 But Secretariat won two big races "on good ground soft ground and bottomless ground", as well as many others on dirt. And your "300 years of breeding" theory can be applied to any great thoroughbred, especially Sec. Lets place these two side by side - Sec was bigger, he was more muscular, he had a bigger neck, a bigger girth, he had more stamina and strength, and he looked better than STS. If a horse could be called the perfect thoroughbred it's Secretariat.
@rcschumann well on a basis of being bigger and more muscular he should be a sprinter sts is just a perfext specimen of middle distance racing why do american horses never come to run in the guineas the derby or the arc or any other classic because they cant stand up to european runners and i guarantee sts will produce far better foals he is going to be a top class sire up with the likes of galileo and montjeu
@liamobrien06 Americans don't bother to make the long and tiring trip to Europe to race because they have the best horses and tracks here in the US. That's why Europeans keep sending their stock over here, only to get beaten by the likes of Tiznow - TWICE! Some of the best UK horses like Giants Causeway, Henrythenavigator, and Sakhee were bred in the US. Great horses can run on any surface. Top class US TBs like Barbaro and Secretariat won big races on both grass AND dirt.
@rcschumann Nonsense, Americans don't send horses over to Europe because of the distance the cost and the tracks in the states are much different than European tracks. To claim that the don't because the State horses are far superior is complete rubbish..
@liamobrien06 Animal Kingdom had never raced on dirt before winning the Kentucky Derby - he was bred as a turf horse. So was Master of Hounds and he finished 5th. Going back to Sec, he was a star as a sprinter as well as a middle distance runner, and was more impressive in his wins than STS. Sea the Stars never won a race by going each 1/4 mile faster than the one before, from start to finish - that's what Sec did at Derby and Belmont. Secretariat was the greater racehorse, no question about it.
When Secretariat retired he was just getting warmed up.He was just learning how to race.Who can imagine what he could have done if he was allowed to reach his peak.Secretariat was not a normal horse. Was his large heart and lungs normal?Almost 40 years later vet.medicine has gotten better, breeding has gotten better, but with the heart and breathing capacity of Secretariat, and being allowed to peak, only a horse of his kind could have touched his speed and stamina.Size of heart and lungs count.
Might want to choose another horse to compare to. Secretariat stands alone and if he hadn't been so lazy in the gates he would've run the derby at least a second or two faster. In The Preakness he went to the lead early and just paced the field without even trying. If a horse comes along that can run The Belmont flat out with energy to spare at the finish, then you can compare. DM is a beautiful horse, but he's still just a horse. Red was more than that.
oh, guys, be objective! although it seems the legendary Secretariat is way better, here's the fact, it speaks itself: Secretariat's track record for Kentucky Derby(2000m) is 1:59.40, and Dubai Millennium's track record for Dubai World Cup(same distance as Kentucky Derby) is 1:59.50! much faster than other winners like Cigar, Silver Charm, or Curlin. Well, who can surely say Secretariat would beat Dubai Millennium with ease?!
@szetotakwa Secretariat could have beat that on a bad day. If a horse doesn't know he's racing then he's just running. As he raced ,you could tell he was learning, by the time he got to Belmont he knew what to do,he did it and he enjoyed it. To bad they retired him so early.
pharlap at his best would shit all over secretariat man o war.... all of them dubai millinium,,,get the heell out of here with that crap...his hieght 17.1 hands and his stride was unbelievable long,,,, his body structure was simply outstanding,,,,secrateariat ,21 starts 16wins peaked at 3 ??? ther best??? get the fuck out of here,,,man o war didnt race past 3 either,,lmao,,,americans ,,,,and thier analizations ...wfa pharlap would crush the 3 of them,,,,gooses
i forgot to mention he carried top wieght thier,,,(agua caliente )
he didnt perform as a 3 year old????13 wins????? 1 second and 2 thirds???????? every1 knows pharlap was a sleeping giant ,,,did nothing at 2,,and the first 4 starts as 3 , was treated poorley in his early career,,,,soon as the strapper came along , he won pharlaps heart and the rest is history,,,42 races 37 wins,,,1 time unplaced(carried 68 kilos ?????? 68???? )
Phar lap raced 1 time on american soil ,travelled 12000 kilometers on ship ,ran out of feed 2 weeks before arrival, went from summer to winter, raced on dirt for the first time with a cracked hoof, missed the start (intenionally) in fear of corrupt jockeys under the payroll of mafia figures trying to block him in,ran 4 to 5 wide the whole way and broke the record easily easing up,and thier was more to come, the thing is idiot pharlap was never tested..hia true ability remains a mistery
For the record, there are certain race records that will never be beaten. Winning 3 big stakes races for the triple crown is an amazing achievement. Which is probably why it's not been done since Secretariat. And he was clearly one for the ages. However, even this pales against Phar Lap's racig achievements. In an 8 day period he won 4 races (3 of them G1's) ranging from 6F and 2 miles. This will never be seen again. Maybe that's a good thing.
@bgardiner2000 G1 races? where? American G 1's? Probably not. Who did he run against? What were his times in the races? I always hear the G1 cry wihtout being qualified. Same thing with weight carrying. Depends on the class of horse you run against. Most racehorses in the early part of the 20th century wouldn't qualify as allowance horses in the '70's.
@bbmtge I know it's hard for some Americans to believe but there ARE good horses outside the US. In fact there are no American horses currently in the top 4 for 10-11F (Racing Post). They are all Euro & Aust horses. ALL of the top 4 sprinters are also Aust. In Phar Lap's day there were many other horses that were considered world class at the time. Only a moron would try to compare horses that raced 40 years apart. Which is what started this discussion - how do you compare Sec and DM? You can't.
@bbmtge No, these are based on time-form. Try Googling it - or ask mommy to come and help you. If you still can't work it out I'm afraid you need to just shut the f&ck up.
@bbmtge Here's something to challenge your conclusive rhetoric. Today we had a horse in Melbourne race called So You Think. After this run I think his rating will be in the order of 130-132. At present his timeform is 127 - ranked 4th behind RVW, Cape Bianco and Twice Over. They are settling him for the Melbourne Cup (2m) on Tuesday. Last start he won the Group 1 Cox Plate (10F WFA) for thew 2nd time. He also won year as a 3 yr old. 2 weeks before that he won another Group 1 over 9F.
@bbmtge He carried up to 59.5 kg's at 3. He carried 56.5 in the 1929 Melbourne Cup (2 miles). The next year he won the Melbourne Cup with 63Kg's.The following year he was given a weight-carrying record for 2 miles - 68Kg's... which is why he was sent to the states in the first place. In Mexico he was top weight... travelled to the other side of the world, raced on dirt for the first time, with an injury, and caned the field that was set against him. Have you even watched the race?
@bgardiner2000 I did not ask for the weight in one race. Look up what he carried in his races at 2 and 3. If you are embarrassed and do not want to do it...I will list it for you. In Mexico he was 5YO!!! Funny how you guys brag about weight without listing age. Again, let's see what he actually carried at 2 and 3 and how that compares to American g1's.
@bgardiner2000 I think you and your effusive buddies are the one's who need to step up and list the weights. Ask your boyfriend to do the calculations for you. You may be surprised at the very light weights he carried at 2 and 3.
@bbmtge He's raced 11 times & now won 8 - $5.6m in stakes. There's a question about whether he should or could run the Melb Cup as the tracks are super-slow at the moment. All of the races he's won have included horses that even you should be able to bench-mark against. There are plenty of European horses that some to the Melbourne spring carnival. Unfortunately there's too much money in Australia, so horses like this rarely travel. Over 2000m on turf, there's no better horse in the world.
Let me ask you. Has Dubai Millenium run a mile and a half at Belmont Park.? And his running time was.????? Has Dubai Millenium run a mile and a quarter at Churchill Downs? And his running time for that was?????? How about a mile and three-sixteenths at Pimlico or even a mile and an eighth at Belmont.???
OK--OK. I'll be more fair in my questions. Has DM run three races in five weeks successfully. Three races in 5 weeks successfully.? How many times did DM run as a 3yr old.???
Even if Dubai Millenium had SIX legs and TWO hearts, he still loses to the Almighty SECRETARIAT, because when Secretariat was at his best, the competition was IRRELEVANT.
Easy Goer would have beat this horse from a Mile to 1 1/2mile on dirt. Easy Goer's legacy began when Secretariat died in 1989 and he later inherited his Stall at Claiborne.. wonder why??
U JUST CANT COMPARE HORSES OR ANYTHING FOR THAT MATTER FROM DIFFERENT GENERATIONS... U JUST CANT... ONLY FAIR WAY 2 DO IT WOULD BE A RACE ON GRASS DIRT AND SYNTHETIC 2 FIGURE OUT WHO IS THE GREATER HORSE... AND ALL THIS WORLD RECORD CRAP ALSO OR NUMBERS JUST LET THE HORSES BE YOU'LL NEVER FIND OUT WHO'S THE BEST AT ANYTHING ITS JUST AN OPINION
@sammygggggggg Yeah And Santa Claus is from the South Pole. That is the funniest joke I ever heard. Who in the hell is Dubai?? We find all kinds here & your one of them. Go back to 'Mars' where you belong.(smile)
@rscarbro100 the original big red aka big bobby aka wonder horse aka red terror but known to most as pharlap....would inniliate the both of them....these 2 horses never carried the wieghts pharlap did and the chemicals that run thru secretariats and dubai millenuims vains!
pharlap by far the superior one, and you know this rscarbro
@LIGHTNINGB0BBY ..and what time in what race allows the claim that Phar Lap would beat both horses? What chemicals ran through Sec body? When carrying weight, who was Phar Lap running against? Funny, I dont remember Phar Lap doing very well at 2 and 3...the ages when Sec raced. All you have made are whats called proclamations. No qualifying, no analysis.
Secretariat had a heart twice the size of any other thoroughbred. Proven in the autopsy after his death in 1989. He just had a bigger motor than other horses. He also had his own, unique personality. Because any race he ever lost, was probably the result of Secretariat just stubborning up on that day. When he wanted to run, Ron Turquot couldn't even stop him from doing it if he tried. He was like a "winged Pegasus", and no horse could come close to matching strides with him. JMO.
Secretariat. all dubai world cup winners have (in my opinion) been great and obviously the best in that moment since they won, BUT, winning the World Cup isn't such a big feat as winning the Triple Crown the way Secretariat did. Not to mention the fact that he was Horse of the year as 2-year-old. How many times has that happened? DM was still good for sure, but there are few horses I'd compare with Secretariat. Man O'War is one of those few, but then again he and Secretariat were two of a kind.
Will you losers just cut it out. You know full well that Secretariat would have been this other "contender" with 2 legs tied behind his back and he spots the other horse 15 horse links. Get over it.
What question? Dubai Millenium is comparable to Sham. No horse in the world will ever compare to the miracle superhorse Secretariat. His speed, beauty and intelligence were supernatural. The miracle of nature was Secretariat....no man or horse can be compared to something that will never happen again on this Earth. Secretariat was the perfect "10" aesthetically and athletically. We will never duplicate his greatness again.
Dubai Millennium put up some pretty impressive performances on grass, but when you watch Secretariat on dirt and see just what he did, then I have to say it would be no contest if the playing field could somehow be adjusted. Big Red would have done to Dubai Millennium exactly what he did to Sham.
Secretatiat is by far the greater horse,no one ran the times he did and when they said he laged and let the others tire,he took it to the in the Belmont and baby slapped them....no question here BIG RED
The Melbourne Cup is a 3200 metre handicap - top class open races are raced at WFA on over 2000 - 2400m.Consider what an Australian horse, Phar Lap, did in 1932 at Agua Caliente - travelled weeks by ship to a foreign land, cracked a hoof so his training was hampered, won a top race on his first try on dirt in record time whilst others in the race were tactically out to beat him, made his run 1000m from home - now that race was also one for the ages... and he is the best horse of all time IMO.
Phar Lap was drugged with constant arsenic cocktails which eventually killed him, read the book. To compare a drugged horse from the 30's is not the same as comparing "clean" TB racehorses of modern day who are drug tested. It was NOT a race of the ages he was drugged at the Agua Caliente and every race he ran not a single fan ever got to see him run free of drugs.
@SHELLMADDE I think the reference is to performance enhancing drugs... which Phar Lap neverreceived. Just like he never had Lasix, as trhe good number of American racehorses are on.
A lot of horses in the US & Euro are retired after their "star" 3yo season after beating up on their own age group, isn't it frustrating for fans not to see them against the best of the best??Makybe Diva would not stand a chance in h3ll of beating either of these 2 at their best unless it was over 3000m plus. She isn't even the best Oz horse to race in the past 20 years, both Sunline (up to 2000m) & Northerly (up to 2400m) have her measure & they would struggle to reach the top 5 all time there.
you lot make me laugh its 2 different horses running on different tracks different years different distances they are both the best at what they do in my opinion but yea its nationalitys here isnt it if your an american commenting for sure ur gona say oh yeaah secreteriat is the best
@joshiegreen1990 Dubai millenium???? you must be having a laugh. He won nothing of note,no derby,no champian stakes,no arc, no breeders cup....Sorry but the dubai world cup is useless because most of the top european and american horses don't bother going.
Any horse with a bloodline to Northern Dancer has to be a great horse, but a 9th place finish at 1 1/2 miles? He would never have been a threat to Secretariat.
MelC54....virtually every horse in the stud book has Northern Dancer in his/her bloodline.....are they all great?? I don't think so! More nonsense from you...you're not the MelC in the Spice Girls by any chance are you?? lol
In that case Horlicks is better than both of them if you want to go on times. Her Japan Cup win was 2.22 flat for the distance. You can't compare times on different tracks. ... therefore you are talking rubbish.
Dubai Millenium beat Secretariat? Dubai Millenium wouldn't beat Sham, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, Alydar, Northern Dancer, Cannonero II, Man O' War, Count Fleet, Citation.....I could go on, but I am limited by character count. Fact of the matter is that Dubai never did a 1 1/2 in 2:24 and that is the standard by which a champion is judged. Sham TRIED to run with the big guy at Belmont.....and got ran into the ground. Even at a shorter distance, Secretariat would win, he did what he had to do.
DM might have been able to beat many of the horses on your list on his best day but I agree there is no indication in his brief though brilliant racing record that he belongs in the same league as horses like Secretariat, Citation or Seattle Slew. The 2:24 Belmont may be the greatest single race any horse has ever run but Secretariat ran several great races and was just coming into his prime when he retired. DM would have been in tough against Lady's Secret, much less her Daddy.
MelC54....what are you talking about.....how many American horses even run at 1m4F to even record 2.24. You are talking nonsense. American racing is all speed and is judged on 8-10F. Dubai Millenium was a miler to 10F. He like Secretariat went below 2minutes at 10F.....1.59 in the Dubai WC. You should read more and stop living in the past!
1. dubai millinum has a better record than big red. big red did manage to somehow lose 5 times.
2. everyont talks about the belmont. dubai millinum won the dubai world cup with a time form 140. that's unheard of. literarly. it hasn't been done before. he almost broke 1:58 under a hand ride. had he raced in the kentucky derby eh would have beat big red with his time.
I think Dubai Mill beats him at a mile and a quarter. antyhin gover that big red takes him to the woodshed.
How many races a horse wins in his career means he's better than the other race horses of his time. In order to determine the greatness of a horse, look at the world track records that compare him to ALL horses in history. MANY great horses have had incredible racing records. They run the same races... so compare the track records they set and if they stand! Secretariat stands alone. He won the "Olympics" of horse racing and SET 3 world records that stand 35 years later:-)
secretariat timeform would be 151 for his belmont so he would have embarrased dubai millnum better chance for dubai to have faced buckpasser or spectacular bid to even have a chance at a photo finish
Being from ireland i would have followed dubai millenium's career.i only ever read about secretariat. but having watched his races on you tube there is no doubt in my mind that secretariat was clearly superior. he just looked like an awesome racing machine and i think he would be at least 10 lengths superior in a match race
I have never even heard of Dubai Millennium, and by watching this race, you can tell which horse is the best, the champion, which is Secretariat. His records still stand today and most of his records have never even been close to beating. Like someone else said Secretariat gave other horses head starts by breaking slow. He came from last to first in 100 yards in the Preakness. There is so much more to say about Secretariat, so without doubt Secretariat is the best horse, the legend.
just becuase you never heard of hiim doesn't mean he can't run. Dubai Millinum is considered to be one of the 2 most briliant race horses over the last 30 years. he was a freak of nature.
You must be joking, Secretariat would blow the doors off any horse that ever lived. Not once during his Triple Crown winds was he touched with the whip by Ron Turcott. His Belmont time is like Dimaggio's 56-game hitting streak -- a record that will never be broken. Had he had a decent challenger in the Belmont and had the track been fast that day (it was not), he would have run even faster. As it was, he won by 31 lengths. The best horse ever, with all due respect to the great Man O War
Secretariat is a legend. The only other legend is Man O' War. All other horses can't be compared to the 2 greatest race horses in history. All other horses are in a different league. And, for me personally, Secretariat is the greatest athlete of all time:-) Watching him race is still the most awe-inspiring, miracle of nature thing to witness.
No. Secretariat by many isn't even considered to be THE best horse of the 70's. Alot of people will tell you that Spectular Bid was better. I happen tot hink big red is better, but in horse racing circles, big red is not "far and away " better than anyone. Dr Fagar would eat his lunch at anything under a mile and an 8th. anyting over a mile and a quarter however b ig red shines, his heart is twice as big as big as a normal horses, he literarly has more heart.
Secretariat is by far the best race horse in history. Only 11 horses have won the Triple Crown since 1919. 27 have won 2 of the races. And only Secretariat set THREE WORLD RECORDS that have never been broken! And what's most amazing is that in 2 of them, he came from LAST position not only to win, but to set the record. The other race was by 31 lengths! And 35 years later, NO HORSE has broken any of his Triple Crown records. It doesn't matter what other horses could have done...he did it:-)
Turcotte deliberately started in last or near last at Churchill Downs and Pimlico and then passed the field ON THE OUTSIDE TURN, easily sprinting past them. Pre-race at Belmont, Turcotte noticed Sham was hurting, so he took the rail early towards the head of the pack and won by 31 lengths. Had he done so in those other two races, he would have won by 30+. FYI, he smashed the Belmont 1 1/4 record. Sham and MoW were greater than DM, and Secretariat was greatest of all.
Why are you even posing this question? What are the track times for each horse rece? What are the track conditions? How many contenders? You have left too much information out to make an informed decision. Thanks.
Its not a hard one really mate, the fact that Secretariats Belmont Stakes race record still stands, is enough to know who was the better of the two. Added, he ran his first 6 furlongs-1200m of the race in a tick over 1.09, which is as fast as a sprinter, yet he still kept going to post a world record. All his wins he won easily and by big margins almost everytime. No question who was the better of the two
Besides Secretariat's other dimensional times (races & pulling up), he ran 4,5, 8 wide; went through walls of horses; ran in mud; 1 race on turf beating the world record holder on turf (1 1/8); gave his competition running starts; Eddie Arcaro said Sec was fastest horse he'd ever seen, including Man O War; morning practices floored veteran timers; last race was dirt&turf deep, soft fromrain.BeatForego,Sham,RivaRidge,KeytotheMint,KennedyRoad,CougarII, older horses; never hit full throttle; etc.
I love how you stated so articulately what so many people overlook...that Secretariat gave the other horses "running starts" and still broke the world records. The only race he didn't give them a running start, he won by 31lengths and still holds the world record 35 years later...:-)
The funniest aspect of this is the inability to grasp the very simple concept that running the 2nd half of a race 4 1/5th's seconds slower than the 1st half of the race means that it is impossible to be accelerating. Rate X Time = Distance
bbmtge 2 months ago
It's become such a puppy mill now horse racing has, that they just crank them out and if the horse's EQB is not right or off, then a lot of buyer will pass them over. Google EQB for Race Horses and it will give you a few links to check out. They judge a horse's gait, stride, everything and these folks will record it on video and then play it back in slow motion and show you why the horse runs the way he does and if he is worth buying or not.
I think it's an invaluable tool for buyers now.

Conduit ran faster than Secretariat in the BC Turf, TWICE. 2.24 is a good time by American dirt standards, but nothing special in world terms. He was just a big fish in a small pond.
tigerboy1966 5 months ago
@tigerboy1966 2:24 is the WORLD RECORD. Google it.
cmf4321 4 months ago
@cmf4321 world record? Alkaased ran 2:22.1 Japan Cup, 2005. That's nearly two seconds faster than your world record. Secretariat's 2:24 wouldn't have got him into the first ten in that race.
tigerboy1966 4 months ago
@tigerboy1966 Who the heck is Alkaased? I tried googling him & couldn't even find him. You may want to give the correct spelling.
cmf4321 4 months ago
@tigerboy1966 Since you're not big into research...I just did the research for you. You are not correct. A horse named Horlicks held the record, 2:22 in the Japan Cup in 1989, not 2005. So I googled who holds the world record for a mile and a half...Secretariat. You should research information before you share your opinion of the facts. I've never lost a bet yet:-) Races are run on different surfaces...so that differentiates the world record. Secretariat had a career only until he was 3!
cmf4321 4 months ago
@cmf4321 Alkaased exists (check pedigree query) and he also clocked 2:22 at the JC, but like I stated in my previous comment, it's no big deal as this is a super fast track, like many in Japan. Sec still holds the WR for 12f on dirt, and no horse has ever come near equalling that. Besides Sham, Sec crushed another G1 winner at the race who didn't fizzle out: My Gallant, who has beaten both Our Native and Forego (both major stakes winners). Sec set WR for every 1/4 (except 1st) at Belmont! Wow!!
rcschumann 4 months ago
@rcschumann I don't think that WR for 12f on dirt is important as the distance is rarely contested. The Belmont Stakes is the ONLY Group/Grade One race on that surface and trip anywhere in the world. We have no idea of what times top class older horses would record if given the chance.
tigerboy1966 4 months ago
@tigerboy1966 Of course times are not important in determining greatness. It's the versatility a horse displays on the track and the manner in which he wins races that sets him apart. Sec's time at Belmont should take a back seat to HOW he won the race - going each quarter faster than the one before, all through the race, when others would have been slowing down drastically in the stretch. He has won races giving up ground on the outside, from the inside, on the lead, from far back. cont...
rcschumann 4 months ago
@tigerboy1966 To continue: this is what sets him apart. At the Marlboro Cup he beat SIX champion older horses, set the WR for 1 1/8 and then set a 1 1/4 time of 1:57 4/5, PULLING UP past the wire! - an unofficial WR later equalled by Bid on a fast track in CA. Check out his monster last-to-first round the treacherous 1st turn at Pimlico (Preakness Stakes) - dubbed the "suicide move" by Beyer. It's this audacity and know-how that makes him unique. I would put the great Nijinsky next to him.
rcschumann 4 months ago
@tigerboy1966 Are you serious?! Japan has the fastest tracks in the world, and the Tokyo racecourse (which runs slightly downhill) is no exception. Several no name horses have clocked under 2:24 at the Japan Cup (who's Marvelous Crown?). And Deep Impact's WR 2 mile clocking at Kyoto (another fast track) is also no big deal when you consider Meiner Kitz (who?) clocked only 1 sec slower in 09 (still faster than anywhere else). Secretariat did the impossible at Belmont '73.
rcschumann 4 months ago
@rcschumann so times are dependent on track conditions and next to useless for establishing greatness. I'm glad we've cleared that up.

@tigerboy1966 Secretariat's world record still stands, and in fact, no other horse has ever broken 2:25 for 1½ miles on dirt

Secretariat. There's no competition. Big Red all the way!
Soeisinger 5 months ago
It's Secretariat, no contest.
Not even close.

pchd1965 8 months ago
@pchd1965 Sec would have beaten all those horses you mentioned without much trouble. No horse has ever won a race the way he won Belmont - going each 1/4 faster than the previous one, throughout a gruelling 1 1/2 mile race. He won two big G1's on turf, at 1 1/2 and 1 5/8, and would have killed those Euro champs on this surface. He was the most versatile on the track - winning on the inside, giving up huge ground on the outside, on the lead, from far back. Secretariat was the best.
rcschumann 8 months ago 2
@rcschumann Ya but the difference is that American trainers can administer anti blood bursting meds which is illegal in Europe because it aids blood flow to the heart..
STHFGDBY 4 months ago
@STHFGDBY But these meds don't aid in performance, otherwise Dr. Fager's 1 mile WR from '68 would have been broken long time ago - look how many 1 mile races are run each year in the US. Also, Sec's Derby record would also have been broken, as well Spectacular Bid's WR for 1 1/4 miles. Sec was checked after each race for drugs, and his trainer imposed strenuous workouts on him before each race, otherwise he didn't perform well - legendary workouts he wouldn't need if he was on the juice.
rcschumann 4 months ago
@rcschumann The drug They permit is Lasix and though it's not performance enhancing like steroids it still aids the horse, many horses suffer this problem and their performance is seriously diminished if the horse breaks a blood vessel during the race, the horse will only run at 50% of its capacity. Why it's use banned in Europe is open for debate but it is seen as cheating and a trainer caught using it will be punished.
STHFGDBY 4 months ago
@STHFGDBY If Lasix is frowned upon in Europe and seen as potentially harmful to the horses, how come UK/European trainers like Aidan O'Brien give their horses this drug when they race here? Cape Blanco was given Lasix in all his races in the US, and Goldikova is also given this drug by her trainer before the BC Mile races. There are US trainers who are against it, and Graham Motion, Animal Kingdom's trainer, stated he never administers this drug. AK won the Kentucky Derby without Lasix.
rcschumann 4 months ago
@rcschumann Aidan O' Brien made it clear that after losing a a race in the States 2 years ago he refused to administer his horse Lasix but on reflection he said in future he would consider using it to level the playing field.
STHFGDBY 4 months ago
@STHFGDBY Like I mentioned in my previous comment, there are horses in the US who don't receive Lasix - Animal Kingdom won the K. Derby without it. Regarding Sec, I don't see how meds would have aided him in any way. He was just a freak, and it was those workouts that got that huge heart of his ready for action (he thrived on them). Lauren would drill him on the day of major races! The morning of the Preakness he worked 5f in 0:57.4, and before the 12f MOW he ran 5f in 0:56.8 (unheard of)!
rcschumann 4 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@rcschumann Well I'm not so sure, The track surface in the states are different than Europes, Our Irish horse See the Stars would have given him a run for his money and so would the French filly Zarkava and not to mention Frankel who won last week, unbeaten in 9 Group ones. It is now claimed that Frankel is the greatest horse ever..
STHFGDBY 4 months ago
@STHFGDBY To continue from last comment: But I see your point regarding Lasix, and I feel it should be banned, especially since horses in the US have won major races without it. In fact, I read it will be completely banned by the 2013 Breeders Cup races, and this policy should then be taken up by the rest of the organisations here. By the way, the great Alysheba smashed the field in the G1 Woodward without Lasix, his trainer wanting to prove critics wrong that this colt needed meds to win.
rcschumann 4 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@rcschumann Well there you go, they want to ban it for the 2013 breeders cus it does make a difference and Alyshebas trainer and any other trainer can run their horse without Lasix because it is no risk to the horses health, the only cost is if the horse bursts a vessel when running which will not harm the horse but it would cost him the race, horses do recover from broken blood vessels but they are usually off the track for a few months and that can be costly.
STHFGDBY 4 months ago
@rcschumann It was the Kentucky Derby where he ran each quarter faster...not the Belmont. In the Belmont he broke the track record by 2 3/5 seconds and won by 31 lengths.
kwgrid 3 months ago
@kwgrid Ur incorrect. Secretariat ran each quarter mile faster in the KD AND Belmont. The Belmont is the greatest race in history. He ran each quarter mile faster (starting at 36 mls per hr. & ending at 39 mls per hr.) He did the impossible that day. No human or horse ever matched it in history. He was speeding UP the entire race breaking the TRACK record EACH quarter mile (except 1st) & was still speeding up at the finish line. He still holds the track record for each quarter mile!! Look it up.
cmf4321 3 months ago
@cmf4321 Thanks for that!
rcschumann 3 months ago
@rcschumann My pleasure. BTW, it is still the WORLD record today:-) No horse has come within reach of that record:-)
cmf4321 3 months ago
@cmf4321 I cannot for the life of me understand why I continue to see posts claiming the Belmont, too, was run faster in each successive quarter. The first 3/4's of the race was run in 1:09 and 4/5th's. The last 3/4's of the race was run in 1:14 and 1/5. The sum is thus, 2:24 flat. You have stated this before only to run away. Definitely math-challenged.
bbmtge 2 months ago
@bbmtge Do your homework and look it up. Google it. He set the track & world record for each quarter mile except the 1st (which he was known for starting slow & speeding up doing what NO horse in history had ever done including today). You're adding up 3 quarters against 1 quarter. In simple words...You are the one who is mathematically challenged. Nothing personal...but you should be embarrased by what you're saying. He ran EACH quarter mile faster. Don't add up 3 quarters as 1 quarter.
cmf4321 2 months ago
@cmf4321 You are without a doubt, the most stupid person on youtube...especially for posting the same false statement over and over ending with "look it up". Let's see how you respond to the 2nd time this is being posted./
bbmtge 2 months ago
@bbmtge I only have one word in response to you...immature. No further response is necessary. I'm not interested.
cmf4321 2 months ago
@cmf4321 Of course. It's your choice to ignore the facts and live in a fantasy world. you haven't been able to counter with facts that support your CLAIM. So, as before, you choose to run away. Anyone whose position was based on fact would have posted Sec fracitons as I did. You, not only, were unable and unwilling to grasp the initial concept as to the slower second half of the race but now, as predicted, you ignore the acutla posted, per quarter, and cumulative, racing fractions.
bbmtge 2 months ago
@cmf4321 You see, IRRATIONAL people make unsupported claims. They, further, when shown the facts over and again, either refuse to respond or continue with their irrational stance. You have done both. In essence, you can't support your claim and nobody is going to change your mind with the facts. Now...run along to another Sec video and post your fantasy.
bbmtge 2 months ago
@cmf4321 Let's see you post Sec fractions in the Belmont. I did, and it comepltely debunks your fantasy. So...post the fractions, yourself. Did you see the tote board...46 1/5th...1:09 4/5th's...1:59...2:24??? Did you read the DRF or Whitney Tower's SI article on the 1973 Belmont??? You see...that's what is called research as opposed to "google it, look it up" with no ability to back up a claim. Learn a bit of logic before making a fool of yourself. My bet is...you won't.
bbmtge 2 months ago
@bbmtge Thanks for clarifying Sec's Belmont. For a while I used to think that Sec ran negative fractions in the KD as well as Belmont, but it was actually only in the former. So this horse accomplished three distinct and unique feats in the TC races: in the Derby he ran those awesome negative splits and set a time that still stands; in the Preakness he made that frightening move round the first turn, and in the Belmont he displayed miraculous raw power and stamina. The greatest.
rcschumann 1 month ago
@rcschumann The only reason I finally posted the fractions is that this cmf character would not relent with post after post of his fantasy. No need to delve into that area as, per your comment, Sec displayed an unequaled level of raw power and stamina...never before, never since. AND, without exerting himself. I agree with you comepletely...the best ever.
bbmtge 1 month ago
@rcschumann By the way...there is an article in the SI vault by Nack. Sec worked out at Belmont on 3/14/1973. He posted a time of 32 and 3/5th's for a 3/8th's mile workout. Great article.
bbmtge 1 month ago
@bbmtge I didn't read that article, but that's 10.8 seconds a furlong for three furlongs, before his third birthday! People make a big deal when a sprinter or miler makes one sub 11 clocking in a race. Sec made three such clockings in succession in a workout, and he was still a juvenile! You must know about the monster 0:56.8 5f he did on turf shortly before the MOW. That's G1 sprinter speed, and he still had a 12f race coming up - he wasn't even at TC capacity. A horse like no other.
rcschumann 1 month ago
@rcschumann This workout was his final before the start of his 3 YO season on the 17th at, I believe, Aqueduct for the Gotham Mile. Sec foaling date was 3/30/1970. Yes, I am aware of his turf workout prior to the MOW. Nack has said that his workouts had old-timers scratching their heads i.e stakes record times in workouts. I agree, like NO other.
bbmtge 1 month ago
@cmf4321 At the 3/4 pole...which is the halfway point of the race, Sec time was 1:09 and 4/5th's. At the end of the race, which is another 3/4 mile, the time was 2:24. The second half of the race, the last 3/4 mile was, thus, run in 1:14 and 1/5th seconds. How is it that you cannot understand this?
bbmtge 2 months ago
@cmf4321 and now...for the lady in the white hat....read' em and weep. I know what you are going to do even before you do it. you will STILL deny it!!! 1973 Belmont Stakes...

2nd quarter.....22 3/5th's 46 1/5th
3rd quarter......23 3/5th's.....1:09 and 4/5th's
4th quarter......24 2/5th's.....1:34 and 1/5th
5th quarter......24 4/5th's.....1:59
6th quarter......25 flat..........2:24
Please tell me again that I am mathematically challenged and should be embarrassed!

In Europe secretariat would ahve been destroyed on grass by Ribot 11/2 read about him, Sea Bird read about him please, Shergar would have beaten him on grass 1/1/4 these were monsters I will continue

liamobrien06 10 months ago
@liamobrien06 Sea the who?! Secretariat could give that horse a head start and still win - ON TURF!! His last two races were demolition jobs against older horses at big G1 races on grass. Has your horse ever won on dirt? Oh that's right, with a whopping nine starts under his belt how could he find the time!!
rcschumann 9 months ago
@rcschumann dirt isnt a true reflection of a horse sea the stars won on good ground soft ground and bottomless ground sea the stars is 300 years of breeding built to a peak and to be fair i think frankel would beat all the above he will be a true great aswel its all about breeding and the irish sires are just unreal at the moment
liamobrien06 9 months ago
@liamobrien06 But Secretariat won two big races "on good ground soft ground and bottomless ground", as well as many others on dirt. And your "300 years of breeding" theory can be applied to any great thoroughbred, especially Sec. Lets place these two side by side - Sec was bigger, he was more muscular, he had a bigger neck, a bigger girth, he had more stamina and strength, and he looked better than STS. If a horse could be called the perfect thoroughbred it's Secretariat.
rcschumann 9 months ago
@rcschumann well on a basis of being bigger and more muscular he should be a sprinter sts is just a perfext specimen of middle distance racing why do american horses never come to run in the guineas the derby or the arc or any other classic because they cant stand up to european runners and i guarantee sts will produce far better foals he is going to be a top class sire up with the likes of galileo and montjeu
liamobrien06 9 months ago
@liamobrien06 Americans don't bother to make the long and tiring trip to Europe to race because they have the best horses and tracks here in the US. That's why Europeans keep sending their stock over here, only to get beaten by the likes of Tiznow - TWICE! Some of the best UK horses like Giants Causeway, Henrythenavigator, and Sakhee were bred in the US. Great horses can run on any surface. Top class US TBs like Barbaro and Secretariat won big races on both grass AND dirt.
rcschumann 9 months ago

@rcschumann Nonsense, Americans don't send horses over to Europe because of the distance the cost and the tracks in the states are much different than European tracks. To claim that the don't because the State horses are far superior is complete rubbish..
STHFGDBY 4 months ago

Pfff, Dubai Millenium by a long shot :)
clotification 1 year ago
Might want to choose another horse to compare to. Secretariat stands alone and if he hadn't been so lazy in the gates he would've run the derby at least a second or two faster. In The Preakness he went to the lead early and just paced the field without even trying. If a horse comes along that can run The Belmont flat out with energy to spare at the finish, then you can compare. DM is a beautiful horse, but he's still just a horse. Red was more than that.
XsXoDrummerX 1 year ago
oh, guys, be objective! although it seems the legendary Secretariat is way better, here's the fact, it speaks itself: Secretariat's track record for Kentucky Derby(2000m) is 1:59.40, and Dubai Millennium's track record for Dubai World Cup(same distance as Kentucky Derby) is 1:59.50! much faster than other winners like Cigar, Silver Charm, or Curlin. Well, who can surely say Secretariat would beat Dubai Millennium with ease?!
szetotakwa 1 year ago
@szetotakwa Secretariat could have beat that on a bad day. If a horse doesn't know he's racing then he's just running. As he raced ,you could tell he was learning, by the time he got to Belmont he knew what to do,he did it and he enjoyed it. To bad they retired him so early.

LIGHTNINGB0BBY 1 year ago
For the record, there are certain race records that will never be beaten. Winning 3 big stakes races for the triple crown is an amazing achievement. Which is probably why it's not been done since Secretariat. And he was clearly one for the ages. However, even this pales against Phar Lap's racig achievements. In an 8 day period he won 4 races (3 of them G1's) ranging from 6F and 2 miles. This will never be seen again. Maybe that's a good thing.
bgardiner2000 1 year ago
@bgardiner2000 G1 races? where? American G 1's? Probably not. Who did he run against? What were his times in the races? I always hear the G1 cry wihtout being qualified. Same thing with weight carrying. Depends on the class of horse you run against. Most racehorses in the early part of the 20th century wouldn't qualify as allowance horses in the '70's.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge I know it's hard for some Americans to believe but there ARE good horses outside the US. In fact there are no American horses currently in the top 4 for 10-11F (Racing Post). They are all Euro & Aust horses. ALL of the top 4 sprinters are also Aust. In Phar Lap's day there were many other horses that were considered world class at the time. Only a moron would try to compare horses that raced 40 years apart. Which is what started this discussion - how do you compare Sec and DM? You can't.
bgardiner2000 1 year ago
@bgardiner2000 You do not know what you are talking about, as usual. Proclamations without performance quaifying, as usual.

@bbmtge No, these are based on time-form. Try Googling it - or ask mommy to come and help you. If you still can't work it out I'm afraid you need to just shut the f&ck up.
bgardiner2000 1 year ago
@bbmtge Here's something to challenge your conclusive rhetoric. Today we had a horse in Melbourne race called So You Think. After this run I think his rating will be in the order of 130-132. At present his timeform is 127 - ranked 4th behind RVW, Cape Bianco and Twice Over. They are settling him for the Melbourne Cup (2m) on Tuesday. Last start he won the Group 1 Cox Plate (10F WFA) for thew 2nd time. He also won year as a 3 yr old. 2 weeks before that he won another Group 1 over 9F.
bgardiner2000 1 year ago
@bgardiner2000 Let's stick to one subject at a time.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bgardiner2000 One other thing...tell me what weights Phar Lap carried as a 3YO.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge He carried up to 59.5 kg's at 3. He carried 56.5 in the 1929 Melbourne Cup (2 miles). The next year he won the Melbourne Cup with 63Kg's.The following year he was given a weight-carrying record for 2 miles - 68Kg's... which is why he was sent to the states in the first place. In Mexico he was top weight... travelled to the other side of the world, raced on dirt for the first time, with an injury, and caned the field that was set against him. Have you even watched the race?
bgardiner2000 1 year ago
@bgardiner2000 I did not ask for the weight in one race. Look up what he carried in his races at 2 and 3. If you are embarrassed and do not want to do it...I will list it for you. In Mexico he was 5YO!!! Funny how you guys brag about weight without listing age. Again, let's see what he actually carried at 2 and 3 and how that compares to American g1's.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge All weights are listed on Wikipedia. Again, ask Mommy to show you how to use the big computer and she can show you how to find it.
bgardiner2000 1 year ago
@bgardiner2000 I think you and your effusive buddies are the one's who need to step up and list the weights. Ask your boyfriend to do the calculations for you. You may be surprised at the very light weights he carried at 2 and 3.
bbmtge 1 year ago
@bbmtge He's raced 11 times & now won 8 - $5.6m in stakes. There's a question about whether he should or could run the Melb Cup as the tracks are super-slow at the moment. All of the races he's won have included horses that even you should be able to bench-mark against. There are plenty of European horses that some to the Melbourne spring carnival. Unfortunately there's too much money in Australia, so horses like this rarely travel. Over 2000m on turf, there's no better horse in the world.
bgardiner2000 1 year ago
Let me ask you. Has Dubai Millenium run a mile and a half at Belmont Park.? And his running time was.????? Has Dubai Millenium run a mile and a quarter at Churchill Downs? And his running time for that was?????? How about a mile and three-sixteenths at Pimlico or even a mile and an eighth at Belmont.???
OK--OK. I'll be more fair in my questions. Has DM run three races in five weeks successfully. Three races in 5 weeks successfully.? How many times did DM run as a 3yr old.???

SHELLMADDE 1 year ago
@SHELLMADDE ---- How would arsenic cocktails make a horse run better.?? I don't understand..??

There is so much more to say about Secretariat, so without doubt Secretariat is the best horse, the legend.

bdw0617 3 years ago
You must be joking, Secretariat would blow the doors off any horse that ever lived. Not once during his Triple Crown winds was he touched with the whip by Ron Turcott. His Belmont time is like Dimaggio's 56-game hitting streak -- a record that will never be broken. Had he had a decent challenger in the Belmont and had the track been fast that day (it was not), he would have run even faster. As it was, he won by 31 lengths. The best horse ever, with all due respect to the great Man O War

No. Secretariat by many isn't even considered to be THE best horse of the 70's. Alot of people will tell you that Spectular Bid was better. I happen tot hink big red is better, but in horse racing circles, big red is not "far and away " better than anyone. Dr Fagar would eat his lunch at anything under a mile and an 8th. anyting over a mile and a quarter however b ig red shines, his heart is twice as big as big as a normal horses, he literarly has more heart.
bdw0617 3 years ago
Secretariat is by far the best race horse in history. Only 11 horses have won the Triple Crown since 1919. 27 have won 2 of the races. And only Secretariat set THREE WORLD RECORDS that have never been broken! And what's most amazing is that in 2 of them, he came from LAST position not only to win, but to set the record. The other race was by 31 lengths! And 35 years later, NO HORSE has broken any of his Triple Crown records. It doesn't matter what other horses could have done...he did it:-)
cmf4321 3 years ago 3
Turcotte deliberately started in last or near last at Churchill Downs and Pimlico and then passed the field ON THE OUTSIDE TURN, easily sprinting past them. Pre-race at Belmont, Turcotte noticed Sham was hurting, so he took the rail early towards the head of the pack and won by 31 lengths. Had he done so in those other two races, he would have won by 30+. FYI, he smashed the Belmont 1 1/4 record. Sham and MoW were greater than DM, and Secretariat was greatest of all.

No question who was the better of the two
tigerrish 3 years ago

The only race he didn't give them a running start, he won by 31lengths and still holds the world record 35 years later...:-)
cmf4321 3 years ago
what "running start"? do you even know what a running start is? they have gates. Man o War actually raced when they had running starts and no gates.

Secretariat is the sire of a winner of the richest handicap in the world, the Melbourne Cup.
His son Kingston Rule won this race in course record time in 1991.
