great example of how ridiculous groups are quick to judge and how easy it is for them not to think for themselves. I recommended this book to 3 friends and none of them understood or could empathize with Meursault - they just judged him as if they were one of these people in this courtroom - how absurd!
Thanks so much for uploading this vid; I wasn't aware that this film even existed. Camus painted a very vivid canvas & this film is close to what I'd seen in my minds eye although not quite as austere or with as great a contrast between light & shadow, in a place of unrelenting sun, as I'd imagined. I find Mastroianni's good looks disconcerting as the little, petty clerk (I'd always imagined Camus himself in that role) but the anomie comes through loud & clear, just the same.
I think that's the whole point, it should not make sense. A man gets convicted on the basis of not being able to show his emotions nor act in a manner which is expected by the society. That's how absurd the whole trial is, convicting a man simply because he does not feel emotional attachment to this world and its people.
this is my only problem with this part of the novel....how does his reaction at his mother's funeral really prove his guilt in murdering the arab? Everyone reacts differently toward the death of loved ones....I just could never understand this part of the novel. I get it in the way of existentialism, but realistically this does not make sense.
