Wow this is so random. What really strikes me is how much stuff they had to buy and cart in to have the locals pose with. I lived in a remote region of northern Kenya for a while, and in that area most of this stuff would have been hard or impossible to find. So how much did the filmmakers spend on making this film, and can we measure that in how many lives could that money have saved?
@F35Pride So far millions of people have not watched this on YT. I am not aware of it being broadcast anywhere else. I bet only one or two people actually have done something in their lives to change their consumerist lifestyle. In my opinion making these types of ads and running them is a way for the western world to make its self feel better about how things are, without actually doing any immediate action. It is the classic I'd love to change the world, but I don't know what to do.
@F35Pride ...So I leave it up to you attitude. Yes we are consumerist, yes other people live just fine with out all the stuff we have, but it will take more then a public service ad to do anything about it. I maintain my opinion that money used to make this ad could have been better spent.
@jonnda Live 8 did infact show the G8 that people wanted to banish poverty, so during the concerts the G8 finance ministers agreed to cancel the debt owed by 18 of the poorest countries and also pledged to increase aid to developing countries by US$50 billion overall by 2010, including an increase of US$25 billion in aid for Africa. So I believe the few thousands spent to make this video were worth it to gain the billions given to aid developing countries.
@F35Pride I did not start an argument. I stated my opinion, and you disagreed. It's not my fault that the only thing I know about live 8 is that they got Pink Floyd to do another show. When I view this commercial, it does not send the message "we are poor, please help us", but rather "the modern western world is wasteful and ridiculous". If this silly commercial actually did some good rather than just pleasing the people who made it, I am happy for it. That is all I have to say.
@jonnda I'm sorry Jonnda, I got my figures wrong. I didn't mean millions of people, I meant billions of people. This video was broadcast during Live 8 when Train was performing this song (Live 8 attracted 3 billion viewers). Live 8 was organized to coincide with the meeting of the G8 (Group of 8 wealthy nations), to show that people wanted to banish poverty in the world.
So true and yet so truly ignored....why waste money in something that kills people...why not make use of in something that kills hunger, beautifies the environment, clears the society to a better and healthier one....increases the education and harmony....
I feel the need to run to Africa and feed people...ahhh!!! They are superheroes...surviving at most of the adversities, they should be clapped... really.

@jonnda Sure that money could save lives but the money would only go so far, the millions who have watched this movie can do a lot more
