@popboy2006 Undercover works worldwide! All the software needs is an internet connection to transmit the pictures, screenshots and IP information from the computer, with which the police can work to retrieve your stolen Mac.
This looks brilliant, but I was just wondering what (if any) CPU hit there might be? I see from your blog that only 10MB or so of memory is used but there's no mention of CPU usage.
What if the thief doesn't turn the mac on (or not on the internet), can it still be tracked?
The video said over 200 macs have been recovered, but how many macs have not been successfully recovered? I understand that this isn't necessarily the fault of Undercover, some thieves are very skilled, or they could sell the computer for parts before even turning it on, but I am planning a trip and need to decide if I should bring my laptop so I am curious what the chance is that recovery fails.
@93server We can only track a Mac that is connected to the net at least once (the same goes for any tracking software or device). However, the internet is so ubiquitous these days that it would be hard not to connect a stolen device to the net, sometime involuntarily through open wifi networks.
right after undercover installed in macbook, the app icon would definitely appear in application folder am i right? so how about if the thief move it to the trash?
What if the thief can't log in because he doesn't know your password? How does undercover acquire al the necessary information to locate it and catch the thief?
@thatadamthing We recommend to have a dummy account on your Mac, that does not require a password and has no admin privileges. That should entice the thief to login and work with the stolen Mac.
@Rixoms You can prevent this by enabling the Apple firmware password. I can't seem to post URLs here in the comments, but if you search for 'orbicule firmware password' on Google, you will find our blog post about the firmware password.
What if the thief swaps the original macbook HD with a fresh HD? You will lose both HD and Macbook casing itself, and the thief will enjoy using your Macbook.
@frannn666 We recommend our users to create a dummy account, that does not require a password. That way, a thief can easily login and use the stolen Mac.
I have had my Mac OS X disconnected for months due to remodeling in the house. After reconnecting and hooking it all back up, an image and an annoying sound pops up saying that it is STOLEN. Even with the internet cord connected, I can't seem to fix it. What do I do?
Does it keep making that "Help! Help! I'm a stolen Macintosh computer!" noise all the time? Because that would be hilarious. The thief would be all like "SHUT UUUUUUUUUP!!!"
Gotta say the only way to beat a thief is to think like one.
Ask yourself what if as soon as they got the machine before attaching it to wifi or anything just simply wiped the hard drive and re installed OS X... Then you're outta luck!
@WillThePlank Please keep in mind that enabling the Apple firmware password will prevent a thief from wiping the hard disk. In addition, we see only a very small percentage of thieves trying to format the HD. Most thieves just start using the stolen Mac right away.
Aside from that, how many people do YOU in fact know that even KNOW how to "simply wipe the hard drive" first thing?? Let alone that of a *Mac*??! I doubt very many, huh? And do YOU carry around an install DVD with you while running around stealing Macs?? Hardly.
A NON-argument.
This whole system/idea is truly brilliant if it works as advertised! Bravo!
@lin2log I'm not saying it's a bad system I think it's a good idea and I intend to sign up for the service soon but that's just one little flaw I can see.
You don't need to carry around install disks you do it when you get the stolen machine home. The kinda people who go around targeting machines who have any sense will know how to do that. Your average Joe no but anyone with half a brain yes. So valid argument indeed!
Oh yeah... thieves are thieves because they're SO DAMN SMART... and Mac-specialists of course and NOT just stealing a shiny computer because they know it to be valuable, nooooo... and never mind looking for potentially valuable DATA first thing, right?
Oh puh-leeze...
And anyone with "half a brain" will know to protect their Mac AT FIRMWARE LEVEL... good luck with your clever wipe then.
@lin2log Dude chill it a little bit. It's not a bad service it's a very good one! Just not everyone is stupid that's all. I don't have time to sit and argue with you so you have your view I have mine and let's leave it at that.
@lin2log both of you guys are right cause most average joe's don't know how to reinstall a mac but they probably do know someone who does and the password at the firmware level is actually low-level encryption because if it was high and you forgot it then that hard drive just became useless
what about if i dont have any of those programs!! :( give me hope please
