I know most fans hate this game with a passion that fulls a thousand suns, but I really think people (not just fans of the Metroid series, but game fans in general) were ready to bash on this game before it even came out.

@sonamyfan666 if you watch the metroid and me video nintendo did, samus never apparantly killed ridely till super metroid. My theory is she had a lot of hate towards ridely since she saw her parents killed by him. After he died she let her guard down and that is why she freaked out cause she thought he was dead.

@LokiV Even more so then Hunters and Return of Samus, I played Metroid Other M and I personaly enjoyed more then all of the Metroid Prime games except the first one which is quite possibly best game in the entire series even more so then Super Metroid.
I think this game is really awesome (talking about gameplay), but I if they wanted to develop the character of Samus in this game, they should have pay attention to the way she was in all previous metroid games (like the prime series and Fusion).
So after playing all those great Metroid Games, we get this. This thing. This Ninja Gaiden meets sci-fi. Oh, and with a main character that is annoying as hell.
@Rokomorro0A Actually I played Spirt Tracks and I found that game to be serveraly lacking as a Zelda game and I personaly enjoyed Metroid Other M way more then both Phantom Hour Glass and Spirit Tracks.

The auto aim and invinci-dodge stystem meant that you were easily able to dodge clumsy bosses with dodges in quick succesion, or got clustered by ten smaller enemies, that you couldn't spray to death with charge beam.
Speaking of which, the charge beam is overly emphasised in this game. There is no point in using a missle, when a charge beam that you can fill instantly with a dodge will do the trick.
I liked this game save for one thing: The 3D view.
Whoever overlooked not being able to walk around whilst in the 3D view should have been slapped, because it ruins an otherwise lovely prequel to Metroid Fusion.
"makes as much sense as collecting random weapons like in other games"? Samus' suit is made by the Chozo... In Prime you find weapons and upgrades left by the Chozo. It's not like you're finding random weapons in the middle of nowhere, there IS some explanation how you get more weapons. In Other M Samus has everything already but won't use them until some asshole gives her permission? BULLSHIT. And: I'm all for a little more action but this isn't Ninja Gaiden ffs. @Ruldolphmaker Its because she's a hired bounty hunter not a vilantage like Batman, the only way adam would have let her in the bottle ship is if she did everything he told her to do, and about the Post Traumatic Attack, although she's face Ridley four times in the past, Ridley has been responsible for a number of traties in her life such as stealing the closet thing she's ever had to a son and horribly murding her parents in front of her.
@Vader3123 that's not the issue here - the issue is that the "personality" they attributed to her went completely against the idea of the strong female warrior they had characterised her with in previous games. if you don't know about it, look up the show extra credits on penny arcade. they did an excellent episode about how simply making a silent protagonist speak does not equal "giving them a personality" as much as it just makes them a facilitator for an exposition dump.
@Vader3123 It's because they totally ruined the image she had made for herself over the years not cause of the personality you see some in Metriod Fusion were she dose not like what the Galactic Federation is doing and intends to put a stop to it but she did not break down when she saw Riddle or easily give into the views of the computer on her ship.
Im not denying that other m is an awesome game, but even after i beat the hella long campaign it just doesnt have the same feel as a regular metroid game.
I don't see the problem with giving Samus a more emotional look. It shows that under that metallic shell that we've come to love, there's a real human being.
I like what they did with Samus, they took a bad ass independent bounty hunter and turned her into an overly emotional needy dumb bitch. Team Ninja, who got their names on the map for Breast Giggle Physics, were definitely the right people to have flesh out the character.
Much better than Xplay's review. Xplay doesn't know sh!t. I enjoyed Other M, and I understood Samus's backstory and why she was. and the story's "holes" aren't holes. They're simply untold parts left for another day. Zelda does it too, but nobody complains about that. Other M was great and is a worthy addition to Metroid.
I liked it quite a bit more than games like Zero Mission and even Prime 2 and 3... It's taken it's place as my third favorite, and I feel that it just is hated for the wrong reasons... a game is bad because the GAME is bad, as in, controls, atmosphere and over all GAME FUCKING PLAY! Gameplay over weighs Samus's bad voice acting, and it over weighs a really unappealing story! I'd give the game a 9 out of 10... I just hope that Nintendo does another game like it... but maybe without Team Ninja...

I didnt liek this at all... I thought Metroid was about exploring vast environments on your own and collecting items and etc, not a ninja gaiden combat game... Not a metroid game, wish Retro would take spot on it again. Retro did very well.
The game itself is pretty good, the controls are great and the storyline is good too, difficulty doesn't spike stupidly and the enemies are well-designed; The main problem with this game is the way it portrays Samus.
Since the revelation that Samus is a sexy, blond woman, everyone has liked her because she's no damisel in distress, shes been portrayed as a loner and a berseker, a lady that isn't afraid of blowing up a planet.
But this game just made her a crybaby with a huge Electra complex.
The giving a thumb down and the scene where she defied Adam seemed very palusible since she's always been a rebel and, although cold, she cared for others like the baby and the corrupted hunters, but as the story progressed she became just more and more involved with a guy that she addressed in Fusion to as a random gruff CO. she once served under, to the point of it being a ridiculously fabricated teenage crush.
The lady definitely would have had some objections regarding this portrayal.
I like that the developers kept in mind the mental baggage Samus had been carrying throughout the series and tried to give us a glimpse of her feelings on the baby's death, since the other games made her seem a bit too heartless about it, but Team Ninja forgot Samus' serious and composed personality, her hatred for Ridley (And the fact that she had just fought another reborn version of him in Zebes) and the fact that she doesn't hesitate to kill something as dangerous as a Metroid.

A character who you know nothing about can be far more bad ass than a character who turns out to be an emo attention whore, a mommy's boy, or a dumb chick with daddy issues

However, the story was an abomination and completely disgraced the legacy of my favorite video game heroine. Giving Samus maternal feelings for a Metroid was nothing short of sacrilegious, and her bratty behavior and unreasonable compliance with Adam's will was slanderous. She nearly got herself killed several times because Adam didn't give her PERMISSION to defend herself? This is not Samus Aran at all.

Although it is unfortunately considered canon, and thus locked into its history forever, I do not count this. This could not have been perpetrated by any true fan of the Metroid series. Keep in mind that Japan is still one of the few countries with a male-dominated mindset. So much so that a considerable minority of their porn has chauvinistic tastes, with men tying down women. Not to judge, but there, women have less power than they do in the States. Feminism isn't as strong in Japan as it is here, so knocking Samus down a couple pegs after years of fan worship of her as a powerful female was expected.
Its sad, but true. They need to get with the program. But as you said, we all should have expected this to happen to Samus. Retro Studios (the one that made the Prime games) is an American company, so they probably didn't think as much on the fact that shes a girl as the Japanese did.

I would've had her attacking Ridley with a vengeance, nearly killing the beast, Adam ordering her to spare the beast so he can interrogate it, but Samus having lost her family to this monster, she would want to send him back to the hell he belongs, and the player gets to choose whether or not Samus would spare Ridley. I love this game, but there were many missed chances-the Bottle ship should've crashed onto the Federation Capital, creating an amazing doomsday scenario.

If this wasn't a Metroid game it wouldn't be receving half the amount of hate its getting and if they decided to drop this game from the canon I garentee you it will be looked upon 10 or 5 years form now as a highly underrated game.

Prior to this, she was like a female Master Chief-an empty shell that people use to pretend they're the badass.
But I believe it would have been better if Bioware wrote the story and added story elements. That way we can characterize Samus the way we want.

Paragon would be Samus obeying Adam and using only the weapons he asks, in exchange he gives advice about aliens that Samus never met before and how to kill the more advanced metroids.
Renegade would have Samus telling him to fuck off, keeping all her weapons, and Adam not giving a shit whether she lives or dies.
I always thought that the greatest heroes were those that do great things while remaining human in contrast of those who do great things by blowing stuff up with a rocket launcher. This game has both.
Other M is a strong departure from previous Metroid games, with fantastic combat and exciting bosses that make this a mediocre entry in the otherwise great series.
@Tiniuc Departure? Only from Prime, IGN puts it great, it mixes stuff form the ORIGINAL Metroid and the newer ones. I.e. Side scrolling. It's not mediocre. It also was meant to fill people in on story as well as be a game.
I WOULD LOVE a sequel to this game! I loved the voice acting and the new game style. Its still one of my favorite metroid games to date. If they do make a 3rd person metroid shooter, I at least want the voice acting! I would be happy. :)

@Vader3123 that's not the issue here - the issue is that the "personality" they attributed to her went completely against the idea of the strong female warrior they had characterised her with in previous games. if you don't know about it, look up the show extra credits on penny arcade. they did an excellent episode about how simply making a silent protagonist speak does not equal "giving them a personality" as much as it just makes them a facilitator for an exposition dump.

Much better than Xplay's review. Xplay doesn't know sh!t. I enjoyed Other M, and I understood Samus's backstory and why she was. and the story's "holes" aren't holes. They're simply untold parts left for another day. Zelda does it too, but nobody complains about that. Other M was great and is a worthy addition to Metroid.

I liked it quite a bit more than games like Zero Mission and even Prime 2 and 3... It's taken it's place as my third favorite, and I feel that it just is hated for the wrong reasons... a game is bad because the GAME is bad, as in, controls, atmosphere and over all GAME FUCKING PLAY! Gameplay over weighs Samus's bad voice acting, and it over weighs a really unappealing story! I'd give the game a 9 out of 10... I just hope that Nintendo does another game like it... but maybe without Team Ninja...

The game itself is pretty good, the controls are great and the storyline is good too, difficulty doesn't spike stupidly and the enemies are well-designed; The main problem with this game is the way it portrays Samus.
Since the revelation that Samus is a sexy, blond woman, everyone has liked her because she's no damisel in distress, shes been portrayed as a loner and a berseker, a lady that isn't afraid of blowing up a planet.
But this game just made her a crybaby with a huge Electra complex.

The giving a thumb down and the scene where she defied Adam seemed very palusible since she's always been a rebel and, although cold, she cared for others like the baby and the corrupted hunters, but as the story progressed she became just more and more involved with a guy that she addressed in Fusion to as a random gruff CO. she once served under, to the point of it being a ridiculously fabricated teenage crush.
The lady definitely would have had some objections regarding this portrayal.

I like that the developers kept in mind the mental baggage Samus had been carrying throughout the series and tried to give us a glimpse of her feelings on the baby's death, since the other games made her seem a bit too heartless about it, but Team Ninja forgot Samus' serious and composed personality, her hatred for Ridley (And the fact that she had just fought another reborn version of him in Zebes) and the fact that she doesn't hesitate to kill something as dangerous as a Metroid.

Keep in mind that Japan is still one of the few countries with a male-dominated mindset. So much so that a considerable minority of their porn has chauvinistic tastes, with men tying down women. Not to judge, but there, women have less power than they do in the States. Feminism isn't as strong in Japan as it is here, so knocking Samus down a couple pegs after years of fan worship of her as a powerful female was expected.

Prior to this, she was like a female Master Chief-an empty shell that people use to pretend they're the badass.
But I believe it would have been better if Bioware wrote the story and added story elements. That way we can characterize Samus the way we want.

I think Halo 2 looked better than this... Hell, half-life 2 from 2003/4 looks better than this. LOL

@aeminence Half-Life 2 is an AMAZING game, year means nothing, it still has great graphics. Halo 2? Lol! Go get a life, graphics and gameplay are where it's at, not just graphics like you XBox people love.

@ClydeE247 I never contradicted myself once. I don't deny it might have good gameplay, but your FIRST comment Halo looked better. LOOKED. This game has both gameplay and graphics, like most Wii games I own.
