  • When I finally have a chance to get this model kit, this will be the beginning of modeling for me.

Any tips for a beginner like myself, especially for the decals?

  • @MASSEFFECTfan101 This model is easy to build, but the decals are a major trick even for experienced guys. A lot of people have difficulty with the decals on this kit in particular. If you are getting into models, make this one your 2nd or 3rd and don't stress if you screw up! Take that lesson and do better on the next kit you build and come back to this kit again later.

An easier one would be the TOS Enterprise or the Klingon, also in this scale, just to get you used to making kits.

  • @ModelManTom Check the hobby forums out there for other people who have built this model. hobbytalk dotcom is particularly good and very welcoming to the newbie. Starshipmodeler dotcom is another to look around as they also sell a wide range of kits and supplies. FInally, scalemodeladdict dotcom is a good one to check out. SMA has a channel here on youtbe too. Look him up! He's listed on my channel's front page along with a bunch of other good modeling channels.

  • I'm about to start this kit and I wanted to know what kind of decal solvent you used. Micro-sol? Solvaset? Testors? Thanks!

  • @Dylan1191698 Probably Solvaset but I have Micro on hand too. I must have said in one of these videos.

  • Hi.I just finished decaling the saucer of my kit. However, you have managed to maintain very definitave lines on both the top and bottom of the saucer. How did you do this? Did you wait for the decales to dry and then push the decale into line groves, or do you have to do this when the decale is first applied?

Thank you for any help and beautiful job!!!

  • It was probably the Solvaset decal setting solution that snugged them down. The stuff is magic. Microsol is the other major brand out there. A few bucks a bottle. If you go back a few episodes, I'm sure I talk about them and show them off. Thanks for tuning in!

  • @ModelManTom

Thanks for the tip. It worked out great. I'm up to the nacells now and can't seem to figure those out. I'll keep at it though as I'm it will come to soon enough. :)

  • @mrtrek64 i saved the nacelles for last two. There's a couple decals that made no sense to me for a long time. Finally once all the others went on, they suggested themselves. I think they were the upper rear ones. I probably mentioned how batty they drove me in one of the installments here.

Now that I've built one of these, I can tackle the second and any others much better.

  • the white pearl paint does make the features come to life a bit, and the detail....awesome!

  • you did great! I think i'll get me one of those...

  • Crazy cool of you to step into the whirling blades for us, Old Man! Still loooks pretty good!

Someone's going to produce fix-it decals for 1701, 1701-A and alternate craft-- I'm surprised that's not out now.

Where's the dam link to this "Raytheon" lighting thing? Who, what, where...

  • grumble grumble!

A hobbytalker is sending my his spare pylon decals so I'll be doing the salvation video when I get them.

"Raytheon" is the handle of the guy who developed a lighting method that fakes the original Doug Trumbull dental mirror tricks.

  • I just got this one not to long ago.

  • It would be totally awesome if Round 2/Polar lights issued a Reliant in this scale!

And or course a Romulan Bird of Prey from TOS.

    :)

  • Regardless of the smudges, it came out great! Try the matte coat and see if that flattens a bit but it looks great!

  • Why does it look like you put a heavy gloss clear coat?

  • I think it was the final pearl coat. I may do a matte over it to see if that kills the pearl effect or not.

  • When are you planning on starting the 1:350 Enterprise Tom?

  • I'd like to by the end of this year. I've got a pile of star wars coming up I gotta knock down. Seeing the aztec decals on this gives me second thoughts on airbrushing same.

  • Much as it's a shame when things happen, at least it feels good to know that these things happens even to a Pro.. such as yourself! At least you have succeeded in making me feel less bad about all my mistakes and misshaps lately.. and having said that, you still ended up with a great looking model.. :)

  • Thanks and glad my errors help out in this way.

Btw, I think this newbie mistake proves I'm anything but a pro! :D

  • If Enterprise were hit in that spot, that would work quite well. I could also convert it into a single engine destroyer easily enough.

But for lack of two decals, I could fix this easy.

  • Hello Tom, very nice work but I 've a question. The decals cover most of the model surface, thus making it all shiny. What kind of spray would you recomend (if any) to make matt? Can I spray it at all or will I ruin the decals all together?

  • This has a few matte coats and it still shines. That could be the clear pearl on top of the matte coat, I don't know. But matte is matte and that's all there is. Maybe a light dusting of very fine white or gray pastel might tone it down...
