  • Why bother catching the leg at all? Simply enter through the attacker's center when the kick is made. The effect is the same, but there is no fussing with catching the leg, which takes more time than just entering directly.

  • yea not very efective only a little ,i think i stick to krav maga, its more simple in apporach and super effective rather thna thihs, stil this is quite good

  • technique is not so bad ,but if the guy kick you at the head you have to protect youself before ,to think to grab the kick so for that part this technique is a bit dangerous for the person you defense...but if you modify the technique you can use for sure, but in a good timming...

  • cathn a kick is pretty hard.lol.

  • is this shuai jiao? cool man

  • Ouch, hip into the balls. Full body weight, with a counter pull if you're feeling nasty.

  • A real kick would probably hit his head so I'm not sure if this would always work...

  • catching the leg is ehhh... how about countering it with a bigass straight?

  • First of all catching a leg is very hard if the latter is to hurt you.

But if you do manage to catch it(you will get hurt for sure), pushing the opponent is a good idea.

    But what follows next?

This technique might be only good if you don't want to hurt the guy too badly.

Practically I would push the guy if I succeed in catching his foot just by applying my body weight, the long extravagant leg pose he did is good for training but don't count on it for a fast action, and mount the guy and punch.

  • I agree with Skyette71, he needs to modify the initial catch, but then again maybe he would, but a slight tracking of the opponent and adjusting his knee on the kick and he would have been knocked out, and I would have my hand across his neck to avoid the opponent countering by jumping off the rear leg and circling and taking his back. But nice Kung fu technique.

  • In many fights, the attacker will use both hands to push you at the upper-torso level to make you fall on your ass. Is there a video that shows what to do? I would think you have to use his momentum to make fly over you.

  • you can use either hands to direct his arms to either right or left direction. From there you need to step to the direction away from where his momentum is going to take him. Following up with a elbow to the face or the back of the head depending on which arm you are using. I know its not really clear until u see it done.

  • He stepped to the side from the point of the enemy attack, usually unless you swing your leg with momentum such as in muay thai, a leg being swung past the focus line is weakened and the leg is only being carried futher to the side by the master pulling it to overextend, all this weakens the kick's strength. The calm assessment to the required side step, timing without going too far is truly what's so impressive about this move and is what gives martial artist an edge over street fighters.

  • @Atarei I feel lame commenting on something 6 months old,but sorry Atarei,I learned this on the street and laugh every time someone thinks they're teaching it to me.

I'm a little brother,I picked up a most my skill getting my ass kicked.

  • Haha not at all =) We just happen to stumble upon the same video 6 months apart. I don't exactly know what you mean so I'm going to take it to mean u disagree with the practicality of the move.

We all have to get our ass kicked to test a point but personally if nobody came with the very hard theory of rolling and locks etc, even MMA'd cease to exist. Even loads of Jujitsu moves are practise out from street to perfection before it can be applied to the street (you can't get knived in real life)

  • I believe just as much as we take crazy stuff Shaolin can do with their body as miracles, I guess Tai Chi would be that miracle in terms of skill ;D

I do believe that street testing is good but that alone never made a martial artist. For a certainty, a typical street fighter who knows no other style would not stumble upon head high kicks or grappling styles without these theoretical martial arts school influences.

I just happen to love understanding d science behind what makes d move works =)

  • @Atarei I'm very happy you seem so cool about it.Actually,I agree completely that a sweep in almost any form or timing is a great move and a very practical way to get an upper edge, but to quote your older comment "this move and is what gives martial artist an edge over street fighters.".This was something I learned more or less street fighting,I paid no one any money to learn it.God I ramble easily.

  • Haha I think its an honour if ever any discussion is taken seriously enough to be replied by others, what more 6 months.

I guess that is a matter of individuality, students in the past took care of their masters living, others by going hermit, and lots fight like you.

Its great that ur one of those who can fight so often and not get broken from it.

Most students however did not start out from such "privileged" background needs coaching initially I guess =)

  • I guess its great to already have a suitable living "success" reference and guideline of what are the boundaries of what you can do you know to most people.

But in the end, they would have to walk down your very path of self-learning, experience and application in situations which are not according them the comfort of a safety net.

  • HAHA!I've never heard of my situation as privileged,""s or not.I can fully see your point, actually, I haven't posted a new video in a long time, but I'm 19 with a ton of scar tissue and six fake teeth at this point.I wouldn't wish this fate upon anyone not %100 serious. But I do put a large amount into prehand training,as all should obviously.

  • I like this technique more, when performed slightly different.

Instead of performing it, as a one-two movement.

You quickly step/"jump" forward and move straight in, on your opponent.

Turn your body, while you push/knock him off balance. (all done, in almost one movement)

This way you: Close the distance, so the kick becomes futile. (The kick looses power due to the shortened distance)

Your catch your opponent when his most vulnerable and off-balance.

    (a) ...

  • (b) ...

You divert his energy, from going forward to sideways, while you release your energy, into his center-line.

(Not forward to backwards. As in this example)

This will have an effect, of doubling the force of the impact.

  • The take down is good, however if they kick you right at the temple, you wouldn't be able to block that with that arm technique.

  • thats what im saying and plus what if its like a push kick or a side kick then you will most likely not be able to catch it

  • Unless you take sanda kung fu, then you can catch it, there is a move against that. I'm saying for this technique, in an mma octagon, your going to get your head kicked right off your shoulders just blocking it like that. I would block it with both arms facing upwards at least to the side to stop that kick. Side kicks I would use a sanda move, or just deflect it to the sides, I take krav maga btw, that's where my opinions are from.

  • o well im no expert at this but blocking would probably be better than trying to catch a kick

  • the point of a counter is to stop an attack in a way that your opponent won't react as if he knew-already-what-gonna-happen-so-i-know-what-to-do-next

    Many comments are useless here.

Because many muay thai or tkd practicians are not use to grab and ground fighting techniques and counter scenario

  • Good luck catching a powerful high kick like that, without getting knocked out!

  • you would want to move into a kick in order to maybe catch it before it develops its speed. a kick need space to travel and accelerate. why not move into it. for a split second your opponent only has 3 limbs it could use

  • "why not move into it"?

Because you might become a punching bag.

    Been there, done that.

  • I was just about to say that but you beat me to it. Catching the kick so close to his neck & head seems very risky. I always found that a simultaneous roundhouse as a defence works very well.

  • Yup, I was about to say that too. Unless you've got a steel neck do not try this suicidal technique.

  • this is self defence in every martial arts (catch the atk, or block it)

the hard part is....are u fast enough?

  • yeah, alot of it is about speed and reaction

  • So what he did was step slightly to the side and let the guy kick his shoulder, then grabs his leg. Go ahead and try this in a real fight and see what happens. More than likely this would of been a head kick instead of shoulder high, would have knocked him out or severely stunned him. And if he did manage to catch it, would have eaten a straight fast punch for doing so because his hands were on his opponents leg and not covering up. Don't see this as practical at all.

  • if the man kicks whit the leg fast and hard...you don't have a chance to stop and catch the leg

  • rerere very good!

  • SHOW MORE HAND TO HAND NOT LEGS ONLY A ma FIGHTER WILL USE LEGS I AM MUAY THAI IF YOU CANT FIGHT YOU MUST FIRST OVERCOME WHAT WE CALL FEAR NOW KIDS WILL SEE THIS AND THINK THEY CAN DO IT ON THE STREETS NOPE THEY ARE GOING TO GET THERE ASS BEAT BUT FOR WHAT IT IS NICE SKILL AND RESPECT p.s. DONT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS UNLESS YOU HAVE TRAINING....

  • yea ii agree

  • if you catch a full speed kick like that, your crunched..

  • depends on how you catch it. as he does he steps to the side when he catches it so he takes some of the force as he grabs it

  • Nice, well done

  • Great video my friend. post some more! ^_^

  • its useful

  • this is a practical technique. the round kick is thrown at the ribs the arm blocks the kick grabs the leg. nice video.

  • Who kicks at your shoulders? =S

  • people who can.

  • damn , i think it would be allot of effectiver if you just kicked him in the nuts right there

  • agreed, the sanda takedown is a lot more effective and faster

  • Or you can catch it to the side of you trip there leg then foot lock them :)

  • i agree this is so impractical, you can't use this to counter muay thai roundhouse kick...

  • good self-defense

  • i know that!!! you dont realy understand what ive'd post do you huh?! i said there are so many types of attack specialy in kicking but what if a 7 footer just kick somebody like that? do you think it can be easly catch? considering the experience of the martial artist who will kick and the streght/weigth of the kick do you think it can be easily catch??? well for me being a human and being realistic person... it is not as accurate as the video shows...

  • this is so impractical...because if you realy practice martial arts you should know that there are so many types of attack specialy kicking...what if the opponent is 7"ft in high??? probably asian like us with standard asian height is in trouble... instead of fighting those guys why dont we use GUNS and granade to finish them off....wahahahaha that is a real asian spirit...

  • ??? the reason why there are so many countering techniques is because there are different attacks. this counter happens to be for this kick, and height really wouldn't have that much factor for this technique.

  • you people have no understanding of chinese martial arts.

  • great...tnx..

  • Chinese people and others can't stop us. We saw Chinese Wall etc.. Turks will come back again !

  • No one can stop Chinese u fucking Turkeys are just American dogs who licking their asses

  • in a real fight, catching kicks are a lot harder than this video shows it to be. if you are up against a person who can kick that high, we can be fair to assume he is a fairly good kicker-and thus, we can assume the person who kicks knows how to withdraw after each kick. catching a kick from a beginner is different from catching a tkd kick. if u catch snap kicks or feints using this vid technique, it will be very messy.

  • KICK ARE ACTAULLY PRETTY EASY TO CATCH USSUALLY THE ROUNDHOUSE AND SNAPS. BUT YOU MUST MOVE IN THE DIRECTION OF THE KICK WHILE DOING SO. YOU ARE RIGHT A tkd ROUNDHOUSE CAN REALLY BREAK SOME RIBS IF NOT CAUGHT PROPERLY GOOD OBSERVATION.

  • @evilcritic I'd love to know who certified this guy to teach. It's irresponsible on so many levels that it's obscene.

  • @evilcritic ye dude I wish it was that easy as they show it here. I'd like to see that japanese guy to try and catch a full powered kick to the head lol. Good luck with that

He'd be fcking out cold instantly

  • I hit in the balls after grabbing his leg would have worked much better in my opinion.

  • omg i saw a vid bout dat but im not sure if i can still fidn it tho :(

  • omg i saw a vid bout dat but im not sure if i can still fidn it tho :(

  • Again, never kick above the waist...serious balance issues.

  • i agree, and wehn people catch my leg i immediatly move forward and punch there neck or temple, plus a round house is normally directed to the head or ribs and not the shoulder where your padded with muscle and maby fat.

  • "wehn people catch my leg i immediatly move forward and punch there neck or temple". Yeah.. yeah... While you keep yourself in balance, your opponent will throw u down on the ground and start beating the shit out of you.

  • when ppl catch my kick, i go into a butterfly twist. fairly unusual counter, it doesnt always work, but if the rotating leg gets the right direction momentum, then the btwist counter can get the ppl's head. the expected outcome is that the ppl let go and back off. if the ppl knows how to fight, this probably wouldnt work easily :)

  • haha, i just hit his leg by my baseball stick.... wwachaaaaa!!!

  • It looks like if someone was really trying to kick him in the head they could. In the video the kick is is hitting his shoulder but if the kick was for his head, he would get hit by it and then do the take down.

  • High kicks are a great way to get hurt... The guy pivoted to kick, AND kicked high which puts him at an EASYLY counterable position. Pivoting means you're already at an unstable position, but the high kick makes the position MUCH more unstable.

The Attacker's Counter? Never use as flashy and usless technique as a pivoted high kick. An uppercut would have worked much better.

  • ahxpluhh u can make appointment with wanglijun, and kick his face like the video, what would happened? and then tell our plz.

  • this is bull!!! by the time he catches the leg its already at his face great way to learn how to get hit.

  • there are many simular tricks but this is one of the most easy and it works

  • i think itd be more fun to just slam the guy in the nuts.

  • I think I seen this counter in Tekken 5.

  • post more kick counters!

  • this is a true tech, no bull....

  • I don't think he's showing the full catch technique here, just the takedown which is great. Cung Le does a great catch demonstration. Its just part of a sequence is why.

  • I love this. And how do we know that he will kick you exactly in the only place you could maybe take the hit to catch the kick? What happens when he kicks higher or lower?

  • he'd probably apply a different technique. he's obviously just demonstrating one particular counter. Which is from a high kick. Obviously wouldn't use this when opponent uses a leg kick

  • the problem i have with this particular technique is letting go after you knock them down what i would have done is kicked out the foot they were still balancing on and twisted the ankle while delivering a few stomps to their ribs

  • the music they play at the end is priceless

  • That's what I was thinking. So silly.

  • question is that if he can catch crocop's left high kick.

  • good question... probably not.

  • Really nice video!

  • great!

  • Great! Wang, lijun is amazing, a true master.
