I'm so surprised by the comments about their live performance. I saw them in Toronto last week and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. The band was talkative and funny, and their music translated very well live. Anyways The National is great, and I'm thankful I saw them during one of their better performances!
@holls26 Fair enough. My intention was to offer a "historical" perspective, as it were. Upon further listening, The National seems to have advanced the ball. I may never be a big fan, but it is still kinda fun to see a band grow over time. Also, personally I put a lot of emphasis on live performance, especially during a festival showcase, and that's where they fell down before. For what it's worth I wish them well. Hopefully I'll even be impressed some day. =)
@caindotwill I saw them live at Lollapalooza this year adn they we're great live. If you want to see how they usually act live i recommend looking up their live preformance of Mr. November at lolla, it was amazing
Saw these guys at SXSW 5 years ago. This song was the worst performance I saw the entire week (of about 20 bands), due mainly to the singer having no idea how to connect with an audience. He was lost inside his own head. The other musicians were decent though. At the time I hoped they would ditch the singer. Overall the experience was so depressing it's hard to believe these guys ever made it big. Haven't heard their new stuff; hopefully they have matured since then.
@caindotwill dude that is a tad harsh. he is kind of spaz-like but his music itself is awesome. 5 years ago they were brand new. Maybe he had an off night? Eitherway this band is awesome.
@caindotwill saw them last night in philly. matt seems painfully shy - i think he spoke to the audience less than five times and made eye contact about the same. most of the time was spent with his back to the crowd or his eyes closed
that doesn't make me love the band (or this song) any less. they're one of my personal favorites.
Thumbs up if "A story of the earth liberation front" brought you hear. Gotta love that human feeling after watching an amazing tale.

I just realized that The National wrote so many great songs, and that I've only heard a few of them. Well, this one goes to the list.

The song is very deep. Is it about environmentalism?
Loose lips sink ships = Activism sinks whaling ships?
Lay us out on the table = trees being cut down?
I'm only breathing = Apathy?

I saw Aaron Dessner once a few years ago when I went to the states, but I was too scared to go up to him and talk. This band is great!
