pretty good for back in 1957 and looks very respectable when played on a modern blu-ray player. the worst part of the filming was when kronos is going across the countyside, it looks like a black and white cartoon drawing. I still like it and think the main actors should have gotten a bit of praise for their work. it,s not "Oscar" level stuff, but also in those days sci-fi was not considered being worth any official praise by the industry.
Oh NO!! Not that same V2 rocket stock footage used in countless cheesy sci fi movies.. I guessThe V2 rocket design is favored by aliens and humans alike :)) lol
I saw it a number of times on TV, and I recently acquired a copy by mail order of this movie. It was one of the things in my earlier days that shaped my psyche.
Yeah, the old stuff scared the crap out of us. We were young and fresh and open to many things new. Today we get brainwashed by what they present to us to view. The Crawling Eye was a slow movie but for the time it scared us. Plan nine, now that was a classic movie and probably rated as a B movie. Too bad Bella died while it was being made...
I hail from the mysterious reaches of infinity myself, so I can appreciate Kronos as an antihero. Also, the way Barbara Lawrence's eyes go from left to right at 01:06: I'd like to see one of your Maggie Gyllenhaalls or your Charlese Therons pull that off.
Jeff Morrow had the funniest line in ALL SCIENCE FICTION movies in this one: As KRONOS is going across Mexico, Jeff points to the sky and says; "Look, the Mexican Air Force!" Then implies the M.A.F. will destroy the machine---the Mexican AF planes are old P-15 Mustangs! LOL!
I bought this DVD years ago. The story is full of implausible holes but the giant alien robot is very very cool and ominous, and the movie has some very unique and well done special effects. I love this one.
This remains one my favorite films - I saw it as a kid and it still never fails to impress. Jeff Morrow (THE ROBE, THIS ISLAND EARTH) was solid, and so was a cast including John Emery (as the alien's catspaw), George O'Hanlon (he voiced George Jetson!) and sexy Barbara Lawrence (OKLAHOMA!). It was co-written by FORBIDDEN PLANET'S Irving Block, and the music is sweet. And let's face it - any sci-fi movie with a mythic Greek reference is headed in the right direction.
@MrAlienscribe JEFF was a technical illustrator who went to pratt school of design he draws kronos on the blackboard [ he said technical illustration is boreing compared to acting ]
One of the funniest lines in any SCI FI movie is when one of the scientists looks up into the sky and says' "Look! The MEXICAN AIR FORCE!" A squadron of P-51s is what we see and ya can guess what Good Old KRONOS does to the P-51s of the "Mexican Air Force"
@Tamarrack That's right. He was leader of the Titans, castrated his father to take over the universe and swallowed his own children to stop them repeating the cycle. Generally, a very evil bastard.
I saw this repeatedly on TV in the '60s, as a kid, and was extremely unimpressed. I still am unimpressed.
I did recognized the mass panic scenes as having been filmed here on Oahu, Hawaii, although they were supposed to be in Mexico and S. Cal. in "Kronos". A few years later I saw "The Revolt of Mamie Stover" (1956) and understood that they were outtakes from the Pearl Harbor attack sequence in that film.
At 1:48, that's a pineapple field in central Oahu.
I actually enjoy this movie. It does show how far animation has come since the 1950s. ;)
This movie is one of many that employed the usual practice of showing off US military might and the fear of Soviet nuclear power (often masked as aliens) during the Cold War. Propaganda-but fun propaganda!
The weekend of October 2 & 3rd - This will be playing @ The Redford Theater in Metro Detroit, MI - Double Feature w/ The Blob - Starring Steve McQueen...!
Before dvds existed some guy was making his own bootleg copies of this and one other science fiction movie on vhs tape I think he got in trouble with the law [ another guy was pressing bootleg 45s of unreleased beach boys songs on blue vinyl he was arrested ] .
These films were done before CGI special effects with the budget, technology & knowledge of the day. Sputnik was a year away & people were very alarmed by the building of the cold war, communism, & the prospect of an atomic holocaust. We practice air alerts in school as kids. These movies were very real to us. Think about the panic following Orson Welles War of the Worlds in 38, on radio! Can't compare War of World 1953 (masterpiece & Oscar for special effects) with Spielberg's 2005 version!
Same here. I think I saw it around 1965 when I was about 7 years old -- I was haunted for years of giant walking things coming from a distance and it's made me very astute and mindful as to what I let my young kids watch now.
Maybe that's why I also found the AT-ATs in Star Wars "freaky."
I have had quite exactly the same experience...seeing this as a 6 or 7 yr.-old has given me those fears, and to this day, when (for ex.) I drive or fly a long distance and see large, squarish buildings in the distance, I immediately think of Kronos moving across the landscape and crushing people...!!
I remember sitting in the empty theater so I could see this twice. I was only 10, so I didn't "get" everything with one viewing.
I think I'd watch it again today, if I could rent it. At least it wouldn't be trying to sell me crappy music during the movie.
My favorite scene is when Dr. Elliot gets his... his brains run out and start to sparkle and pop on the floor! Top that one in a Tom Cruise movie! Hah!
It must've got that inspration from the airport tower look-out. lol...like it's alive and...watching. XD And what the hell was that at 1:26 ? it look like their about to get it on. weird
