@ablestar88 I can only assume you are American and write dates in the format Month/Day/Year. In the UK and Australia it is Day/Month/year.  12.03.1977. That is the twelfth of March nineteen seventy seven (12th March 1977) Marc did not die until September of 1977.

from what i have read, this song is about june. its a bit of an apology, though the divorce hurt his ego. apparently he had several meetings with june in 1977. june always stated this up until her death and several close pals also stated this was the case. he also really didnt see gloria initially as a permanent thing but june and his ego forced his hand.
