  • God damnit they fucking rule without a singer. FIRE LEBRIE!

  • is he dead?

  • did you know that MYUNG can kill someone with only one finger???

  • uhh...yeah lol

  • K agilidad , k velocidad, k tecnica .. k hijo de putaaa!! te kiero Myung!!

  • not that i'm complaining

but why is this all on john?

  • there's one of this videos for each member of the band, just look it up ;)

  • K well...what "29573428937" said AND it's a special feature on the "live at budokan" dvd. you can multiangle which member you wanna watch :P

  • i mean....what "blackOsker" said lol

  • oh on their dvds if you buy the real copy, you can view see the angle of every band member (of course labrie not included in this song) and an over view of the whole band.. tis a unique feature only on the real dvd

  • vomit notes

  • i fear myung's fingers

  • so does your girlfriend

  • John Myung = 1 of the greatests bassplayers in the world today

  • he must have mental powers

  • you bet

  • Simply amazing

  • Why does he actually has a secret pickup just beneath his seymour and up to the bridge?

The version for normal people does not come with this one. Or am I blind and this is not a pickup at all?

  • yeah, I think it's a pickup, too near the seymour. wtf, this bass has enough sound with the seymour at all :D

  • thats not a pickup. its just a piece of wood or plastic put there so you wont dig into the string too much when playing hard.

  • its definitely a pickup

likely after he ended his endorsement with yamaha

i dont know why he didnt stay though

    great basses

  • I think it's because of the money and because his contract with YAMAHA just has ended. YAMAHA and Music Man are both great but my favorites are his Tungs he used during the Awake period.

  • What's 03:59-04:14?

  • It's part of "The Dance of Eternity" from the album Scenes from a Memory Pt.2

  • dream theater are great =]

  • that is mighty i cant belive how good this is the best bass solo ever..........

  • i'm going to buy that bass in like a week from now!!!

  • dance of eternity, ytse jam, erotomania, a change of season. any one?

  • you forgot metropolis pt. 1

  • Paradigm Shift and Universal Mind a bit later in the instrumedley

  • hell's kitchen at the end

  • what an awesome medley

the shmedley wilcox on 2008 tour was amazing to:Trail of tears, finally free, learning to live, in the name of god, octavarium

  • yeah it seems that way, but he practices 6 hours daily and "warms down" after shows. he really loves playing bass.

  • It's funny you mentioned that. Portnoy is so expressive on the drums and yet he admits to practicing very little and seldomly warming up. I find that ironic.

  • ahhhh... yamaha rbx-jm2

  • I could barely hear john p through the entire concert the way they mixed it. It's like Jordan was the lead instrument. At least John M is turned up and audible for once.

  • wats the song at 5.11?

  • a change of seasons

  • thanks dude

  • The most talented band alive today =]

I dont think any band could even come close to sounding like DT

  • Well said.

  • i wish i had fingers like him.

  • My god somehow hes so dam cool when he plays

  • Whats the song at 2:45?

  • The song is called erotomania

  • what is the song at 3:35?

  • Dance of eternity

  • sweet. thanks.

  • what bass does john use here?

  • rbxjm2 with an extra pickup

    his own custom bass

  • yamaha?

  • What song does they play at 3:10?

  • Hi, it's still Erotomania

  • Thank you

  • what the fuck... if u had to get prepared for a bass solo like metropolis i bet u would have done 10 mistakes. and i bet he didnt make a mistake he just hits the strings very smoothly..!

  • the camera hes got attached behind the mic,how is that supposed to tape anything?

  • It's an official release. Usually the sound on those things everything is recorded on cd from the sound board. Then it's mix/mastered to be sync with the video.

  • how did you get the video for only this cam

    wtf

    I want the JP cam

  • It was a special feature on the 'Live at Budokan' DVD.

  • The JP cam is the rest of the DVD lol

  • He did play all those notes, What you see him do is a weak left hand hammer-on (on the note you are talking about, the same note he then slides down on the next beat) but the reason is the mixboard man ups his volume right there for the tap part, thus a lite hammer-on is easy to hear.

  • So he dosent play one note, big fucking deal

  • Whoa, whoa, whoa, WAIT A MINUTE!! What the hell is happening at 4:13-4:14?! Am I correct to say that bass notes are being played, and Myung isn't playing them?! Look carefully at his right hand at 4:12 into 4:13-4:14. Watch CAREFULLY, and please respond to this comment as to what it is. I'm sure I'm probably wrong or something, but I mean, it just sparked my attention...

  • maybe he wrong the first note but he continues so playing on the B string the right notes ..

  • "maybe he wrong the first note but he continues so playing on the b string the right notes"

    ...

Sorry, I don't grasp the meaning of your phonetically challenged statement.

  • sorry. I meant: he wrong the first notes and to continue playing this part , he plays all notes on the b string.

  • what the hell! are we speaking ebonics! do you mean you think he IS wrong for the first few notes, but later on you begin to see what he means. freakin A!

  • i think it was only a little mistake form myung, but he did it well

  • Yeah, he messed up and they overdubbed it for the dvd.

  • Well from what I can see at least; he does play it right. Because the first two notes on that solo are played with the left hand, and the right hand flows in after that. Because of his fluidity, it could be possible to see that as a mistake on his part... But then again, that is just what I've observed... after watching it 10 times in a row. xD

  • No wait discard that last comment. I thought you were talking about the tapping solo... But in reguards to the proper time of what you mentioned... Eh... From what I can see. It looks like he is playing it right. I mean, because he does have a strong fretting hand, so it would be easy for him to tap out a note if he wanted to. Thus making it look like the R-hand was being lazy or somthing... idk. Just my observation.

  • Maybe he slid into those notes and the bass drum made it sound like it was being played. Or he may have made a mistake and overdubbed it, after all he's human, and humans make mistakes

  • if you notice...

the video is a tiny bit out of sinc lol

  • good video tho :)

    thanks for posting

  • dream theater kiss ass like a muffin on lsd

  • What's that like?

  • i've not said that myung is not able to play bass guitar , but often dream theater members are compared to GOD.(demonstration is -7 on my first comment) there's many and many other musicians better than them.

I really like how myung plays bass , but for example troy tipton is on another level.

  • It's all opinion. get over it.

Mike dirnt is the best bassist in the world.

  • Where did you find this video?

  • whats that thing hes attached behind the mic?

  • a small camera

  • petrucci mist up the solo so bad

  • he play the same way he breath easy

  • He plays it so fluidly, like he doesn't have a care in the world, it's effortless. It amazes me and pisses me off at the same time.

  • care ffs it's all about prefrences

  • rincoglionito...e te lo tieni...

  • At least Myung kicks your ass on the bass.

  • cool as a shaolin monk!

  • He's simply the Grandmaster Bass Jedi. His finger kung fu and fret voodoo are supreme. Plus, just look at him. He doesn't even appear to be exerting himself or operating anywhere close to his full capability. Yes, the Force definately with him.

  • john myung has a style none can achieve.

  • He's just so calm....

  • yeah go john myung

  • Yo gleven this song is about them mixing all their past song into one and also progressive music can change right in the middle of the song from happy to sad but they dont do it in this vid so ehhhh.

  • This song is a combination of several of their songs. That's why it makes no sense. They have many great songs.

  • these guys are great musicians, but the "song" they are playing doesnt really make much sense to my ears, and evokes no emotion, only kind of confuses me.. is this band just about good musician ship or do they have some great songwriting too?

  • the song is a medley of most of their instrumental songs and interludes. not a good start is you're new to DT.

  • Agreed, it's a rubberbone for DT fans.

  • try something more "melodic", like Take the time, for ex.

  • IM A BIG FAN OF JM.. Slapping is amazing.. but this is inredible

  • La Villa from Rush got me interested 25 years ago. Myung renewed my love for playing. For a little while (about two years) I lost interest because nothing out there interested me. I discovered DT about two years ago and I have been working on DT for about a year now and it's a great challenge.

  • Off the wall-talented. The two reasons I began playing bass: Geddy Lee and John Myung. I could watch them play all day.

  • I am currently working on this song. Great song very difficult. Any suggestions?

  • Just go for it and don't get discouraged

  • I actually have most of it. 0.45 is a pain.

  • he doesnt use a pick

  • He uses one slightly these days. Eg, on These Walls and at the end of The Dark Enternal Night (while playing with lots of distortion)...

  • All behold. The Supreme Jedi Bassmaster. When you can take the pick from his hand you'll be ready....but no one has yet.

  • That ... that what he does at 2:53/54/55 ... stuff like that makes the bass guitar such a great contribution to music like this. Isn't that nice !

  • hey sorry man just read the other comments

  • does anybody now another good 6 string bass player???

cause buying a 6 string bass just to play DT seems a little too much for me, although id do it anyway.

  • Nathan East, John Patitucci

  • Jonn PATITUCCI?

    umm... for real??

  • You do know that there's a bass player called John Patituci, right? That's what he was asking for.

  • Patitucci*

  • it was just the sheer coincidence that got to me:P

    no i hadn't heard of him before:P

It's a dream theater vid, and someone asks of another bassplayer that does 6-strings, and John Patitucci comes up:P

It's so close to John Petrucci, that's all:P

  • You best recognize, Patitucci is amazing.

  • adam nitti and alain caron for starters...im sure there are a billion others lying around too lol

  • john myung rocks!

  • I love the riff at 3:45ish, then the ragtime solo :)

  • Dude, the sound quality you have on this vid is awesome... in all the others of Budokan, the bass and guitar volumes are out of balance, but in this vid, I can hear both very well.

  • i love that bass!

  • Huh....Is it just me...Or did he tune mid song at 3:25/6/7? And he is the god of all those who are bass players. This man is insane. :|

  • yeah i think he did.

  • Probably just tensioning it, it'd be hard to hear yourself over the band. That bass is not ment to come out of tune. But, he plays very aggresively.

  • I wonder what John Myung is doing between 5:34 to 5:37... looks like he's signaling someone.

  • a more important question is what were YOU doing? Being a fan is all fine and good, but get over it, get over john, and get playing your bass, and don't try to play like him, just f-ing play! don't be a follower, be the leader that I know you are!

  • I think he forgot the next tune, he stops playing for a bit there too :P

  • Dance of eternity is the greatest DT instrumental...

  • My vote goes for Overture 1928

  • Mine is for Stream Of Consciousness.

  • wow

  • is it just me or does he seem confused before the metropolis solo? cos I can't seem to hear it :/

Amazing medley of some amazing songs by an amazing band with an amazing bass player.

  • lol what's 5;42 all about!?

  • I think they did that partway through Change Of Seasons on a live performance of the song once ^^

  • I have followed bass for 25 years and played for that long. Out of all of the bass players I have heard he is the best. Myung incorporates all the styles into one. The only he doesn't really do it slap/pop. I am not into that either.

  • Myung is amazing!!! he cant be the best, but he kick the ass of many rock bass players!

  • he may not be the best bassist ever, but he is really f###ing amazing

  • No, they also play parts of Dance of eternity, Metropolis, Erotomania and a chance of seasons

  • It's called Instrumedley, that means they throw a bunch of song parts into one piece.

  • so try to play bass like him dude.. !!

  • i disagree that he is the best bass player ever; maybe if he was more versatile. but he is most definately the best that is part of a band.

  • MYUONG IS EVERYTHING... hi is the best bassist ever!! Myung id god in what ho does..

  • +1 dude.

  • +2, he IS the best.

  • well done dude!

  • Yeah, obviuosly he messes up at 4:11'sih and they edit it out. But um can you blame him I mean look at the rest of the song, and he had to make sure and have his solo dead on. People make mistakes even if they are sick as hell on their instrument. Myung owns all.

  • ok people the thing is this: he never screws it ok, because he is live he just stop playing few notes earlier because he will start with the little bass solo ok that is the big deal and if you listen carefully the bass just stop playing for a couple of notes, that´s it

  • I listened carefully. You can clearly hear the bass slide at the end of the ragtime solo so he doesnt stop early. For those of you who know the riff, it ends with an ascending chromatic scale in E alternating with a pedal tone of B, hence the use of the open low B for the pedal tone. I can say with absolute certainty that only about one note in that last section of the riff fits in with the video. To the guy who said it might not be in time: how come the rest of the video is in time then?

  • I think he messed up but it was corrected in the studio. And just for the record, so what? You guys are right, Myung is still a God at what he does. He makes one little mistake in one of the easiest DT riffs, so what? He still nailed the rest of this beast of a medley, so praise be to Myung.

  • please notice that the solo is alot better than most performances they did, such as scenes from nex york.

i love the clear, round sound he has on this one

  • Remember that picture & sound aren't always on the same time at youtube :P

  • for u people picking on the 4:11-4:14 part. you are hearing the other instruments and then slides down. there is nothing edited.

  • no doubt the song has been studio edited at least at the 4:11 - 4:13 part. By the way take a look at 2:37, he plays a note out of time :P. Well now i've found out that myung is not god!

  • I agree about the studio editing.

  • hey my friend what are you talking about rae you crazy?myung always is playing his baas

  • WTF?! 4:11-4:14 there it sounds like something is coming from his bass but his fingers aren't moving. What is up with that?

  • he's definitely in time and with the progression, and he's definitely playing something that makes sense during 4:11-4:13

  • yeah he is .. plus maybe getting ready for his bass solo.

  • John Myung, we love you !!!

  • yeh its mostly difficult to find the start for the solo if u wanna play the riff before perfectly.

  • what happens at 4:11 - 4:13?

  • I think he was trying to think about the bass riff coming up, maybe?

  • John Myung....The God and The Beast in one being!!!!

  • agree!the best metal bass player for me!!!! awesome video and awesome medley anyway!!

  • He's really a master over the bass guitar... Never heard any bassist who's better.
