this lady apart from being the forces sweetheart had a fantastic time in the west end after the war followed by a great run on television and bless her she still makes apperances to support the british legion and help for heroes and now she is in her nineties she should'nt just be a dame she should be lady vera and the highest award the country can award her
What a great video of Dame Vera, singing so well at aged 77. Such inspiration, talent and elegance. We salute Dame Vera, there will never be another like her.
I just received a lovely letter from Dame Vera, after I wrote to congratulate her on her new album. What a really beautiful person she is and it makes us glad to be British! May she continue to lift our spirits!
This makes me so proud Vera Lynn and the older generation truly were the greatest generation. Their bravery, spirit and hope is mesmerising if it had not been for British Men an Women including Vera I'm fairly certain totalitarianism, hatred and evil would have dominated our world. It's so nice that people of all ages can appreciate these sentiments its living proof that goodness and light are still evident in society.
i was lucky enough to be in the audience that day as i was also doing a show on the QE11, the same day (i have a clip of part of my show here on youtube) , the lady is just great. and a pleasure to work with
I totally agree with "sirpolopaul".... Quite an incredible voice for age 77!!! Sadly, so many "great" vocalists lose their pipes at a much earlier age.... Sinatra, Paul Anka, to name a few... Heard Jack Jones on TV-Land awards last week.... another voice which has so-far stood the test of time. Cheers to all...!!!
What a lady in every sense of the word. She represents all the best things about Britain and sang superbly. It is astonishing to know she was 77 at the time and would have sounded even better with the backing of a full swing band. Bless you, Dame Vera, and many happy returns.
Modern female singers eat your heart out. Her boobs were always covered, her skirts below her knee, and the fellas still swooned. Vera Lynn was a true lady!
My god, I sang 'It's a Lovely Day Tomorrow' in this concert (vid attached) but could not find a recording of Vera singing it... Oh and Blue Birds - the MD must have watched this clip. I learned to sing listening to Vera and Doris Day - massive talents - my heros.
Hey, she bowed to the audience, then she curseyed. Was the Queen there? Was she singing along? This great lady (Vera Lynn) deserved a better band than these hotel lounge lizards, anyway. What, Cunard couldn't spring for a Swing-Era orchestra for an afternoon?
Fantastic,, really enjoyed looking at that. She still sings amazing. Only thing that struck me watching this, givin the occasion, I thought the band sounded like you'd here in a local bingo hall, been nice to have an original band sound like when she sang it during the war. Just my opinion, but still, really nice to watch and listen to, thanks for posting.
My dad was a guest of the Emperor on the Burmese Railway. Someone begged borrowed and stole parts and made a crystal radio. At great risk the men were led 2 at a time to hear 20sec of the BBC World Service to show them that the claims of the guards that Britain was collapsing were false. For his 20sec. my dad heard Therell be bluebirds What a boost.
I remember sitting next to the radio with my Mum during WW2 in South Africa as a young child listening to Vera Lynn and Just knowing, as a child, that my Dad who was a prisoner of war would come home which he eventually did, not half the man that he was when he left the country
my wife died last year, but we went through the war together, i,m 92 now, but feel 16, thank you sooooooooooooooooo much for posting her tunesyou made and old man verey happy :-)))
@magic2uk So sorry for your loss. Without wishing to sound patronising, how marvellous that you use you tube and the web. My parents lived through the war too. I was born in 64 so was fortunate not to have done. But the music, ah, well that is wonderful. I was widowed three years ago at 42, so do actually understand how important memories like this can be. Enjoy Vera and the like ;D
@magic2uk's Youtube might say 24, but how do you people know he's not really 92? even if he was 92, you all should show respect for the eldest anyways
Even for me, a 39 year old Dutch man, she is the archetype of freedom, liberation, hope and proud. My parents were children when Holland was liberated but the still can tell us all the beautiful stories about the Tommies, Canadiens and American soldiers. Knowing that I am a child of Freedom and democracy thanks to YOU and hearing Vera, touches me deeply. Thank You.
I agree completely. I hadn't discovered the beauty of Dame Vera until about 9 years ago, when I got one of her CDs and, I confess I don't know why, I found it very moving...and still do. She looks great here. By the way, the Dutch people are perhaps the bravest, most soft-spoken, wonderful group of people I've ever had the pleasure to have met. This coming from a 39-year-old American. Cheers!
how can this video possibly move a 41 year old man to tears? We'll meet again was the first song i learned all the words to. It will always remain my firm favourite. I'd love to meet this great great lady one day. Vera you did us proud and always will.
so many memories of the war! let's its dont' happen again , god bless her, serious has the ~X factor, i wish i could give a cuddle to her and say thank you, and i still can't belive she's 92 ._))))
Your songs always give me goose flesh as they remind me of my parents who have ong passed away. My father was in the army and he and mother used to sing your songs so often that i learnt them by heart. I was a 1948 baby. You are great Dame vera Lynn and well done for being the number ONE in the charts. May God Bless you all! Magda Magri Naudi > Malta
This is wonderful. I'm so pleased that in 2009, she's getting some belated modern attention with her #1 album in the UK at age 92 or so. 77??? This voice sounds more like from a woman who is 47!!!!!!! I can't believe I hear a 77 year old voice singing so powerful with such a crisp and young-sounding voice. What a professional!
WOW im 18 and a huge fan of bands such as AC/DC and guns n roses etc. Must admit i had bever heard of her untill i heard she was top of the charts this week.
So out of curiosity i looked her up on here and im shocked! what an absolute performer :) and a lovely voice for a 77 year old (if im not mistaken at this time)
i'm a man of the sex pistols, siouxiesue and the clash, but i can also listen to vera, it shows that there is room in the music world for all genres, and and fans of all ages, weather your a pistols or vera fan, one thing you have in common, you enjoy your gig, keep rocking vera
I have always admired this great lady with such a voice of distinction at my 42 years of age i missed what she gave to so many between 39 and 45,but i have certainly loved listening to such a great lady in my later life.God bless her 92 and smashing. xx
Just gotta love Vera. She epitomises all that her and her generation did for following generations. The ability of youngsters to voice their opinions in the free manner they do was down to past generations paying a heavy price to give them that freedom. Respect to all who answered the call back then.
A shining example of a tough and resilient generation - we are all better for their never say die attitude, you just gotta respect them. Great voice for a lady of some years.
Yes Q, mine had a natural sense of simplicity and toughness that I sadly miss today but maybe that is just me getting older. :) I don't know how that did it but I was raised with no fast food, tv, drugs, booze - we had home cooked food, drank water from the tap, ate at the table together, played together. I miss it badly. That generation did it tough during 2 wars and a depression but they never gave up. I have much to be thankful for.
woooooooooow!!!!! many singers lose their voice as they grow old, but this is just amazing, WHAT A VOICE, amazing, I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she's just great!
Much respect to her for picking the furthest field of war to visit lonely soldiers:The jungles of Burma. Still such a great voice. Hats off to you, Vera!
No, definately the QE2. The orignal Queen Mary is permanently berthed in Long Beach California as a floating hotel. This performance was filmed aboard QE2 as she was moored in Southampton.
this ladies been there all my life and what a treasure she is she's superb in every respect and realy down to earth when you meet her, like to see some of the modern singers have a career as long as this wonderful lady
They were the Greatest Generation for a reason. It makes me sick now when Liberal bastards in the USA and UK portray the men and women who fought in WW2 as murderers or war mongers and spit on their sacrifices.
She was and still is a great lady! I have loved her songs from the time I was a little girl during WW2. When she sings it still brings tears to my eyes.
I've loved this song and Vera Lynn ever since I heard both for the first time at the end of Dr. Strangelove. It was an admittedly jarring juxtaposition on Stanley Kubrick's part, but I think it worked. I was born in '52, and this song actually manages to make me wistfully nostalgic for a period of time somewhat before I was born!

Just gotta love Vera. She epitomises all that her and her generation did for following generations. The ability of youngsters to voice their opinions in the free manner they do was down to past generations paying a heavy price to give them that freedom. Respect to all who answered the call back then.

Yes, her voice sounds really great, so strong considering her age! Couldn't they have gotten her a better backing band, though? Less electric?

Can't expect them to sound like a 1940s big band.

A shining example of a tough and resilient generation - we are all better for their never say die attitude, you just gotta respect them. Great voice for a lady of some years.

I agree so much with your comment about that great generation of people. My parents were among them-God rest their souls.
QWZXM 2 years ago
Yes Q, mine had a natural sense of simplicity and toughness that I sadly miss today but maybe that is just me getting older. :) I don't know how that did it but I was raised with no fast food, tv, drugs, booze - we had home cooked food, drank water from the tap, ate at the table together, played together. I miss it badly. That generation did it tough during 2 wars and a depression but they never gave up. I have much to be thankful for.

The vessel seems to be Queen Mary instead of QE2?
luftbubi 3 years ago
No, definately the QE2. The orignal Queen Mary is permanently berthed in Long Beach California as a floating hotel. This performance was filmed aboard QE2 as she was moored in Southampton.

They were the Greatest Generation for a reason. It makes me sick now when Liberal bastards in the USA and UK portray the men and women who fought in WW2 as murderers or war mongers and spit on their sacrifices.

Note Queen Juliana of the Netherlands in the audience singing along. x

I'm 18, but this makes me wish even more so that I could have lived in the 40's; to have fought in WW2 when people had honor and morals.
Watching this brings tears to my eyes.
gecko21590 3 years ago 3
She was and still is a great lady! I have loved her songs from the time I was a little girl during WW2. When she sings it still brings tears to my eyes.

I've loved this song and Vera Lynn ever since I heard both for the first time at the end of Dr. Strangelove. It was an admittedly jarring juxtaposition on Stanley Kubrick's part, but I think it worked. I was born in '52, and this song actually manages to make me wistfully nostalgic for a period of time somewhat before I was born!
