The late Deac Hundley founder of Old Town in Kissimmee, Florida and the Saturday Nite Cruise, was one of those daring young men that drove the Corvairs.
fascinating video, thanks for posting! a couple of interesting things... the pan-american highway now ends at yaviza, panama, most of this video covered the portion up to and including yaviza. the film stops at the panama-columbia border, which is a great achievement, but that's also where the drug lords and geurillas hang out, which makes one wonder why the film didn't say what happened after they hit the border. did they turn around and go back instead of trying to get to turbo, columbia?
@rockymountainsunrise From what I've read, a 1971-1972 British expedition discovered the wreck of one of the Corvairs used in this video. I found an article with a picture from 1990 :
Great video! If there's a book about this adventure, I'd bet it's a good read! I've gone off road for years in 2WD cars. It goes pretty well when it's dry, but turns REALLY BAD once the ground turns to mud. I wouldn't be surprised at ALL if these guys were stuck for 3 miles for every 5 miles that they were travelling.
Found Part 2.... great footage. Did notice the cars were a bit worse for wear, but still running. Couldn't do that in a Mustang, LOL This would have made a great infomercial in the '60's. Thanks for the vid.
