  • I met Wayne back in 2011 at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery "Soft Bulletin / Darkside Of The Moon" Concert....he is such an AMAZING guy with such a beautifully sweet voice and disposition. I love him!!! :) This song brings me tears everytime...

  • The sound quality seems...bad. Whats up with that?

  • I just love this song, and the band, bloody marvellous

  • smallville brought me here :P

  • if i lived in the time when the pencil was invented, and it was i who invented it, anyone who used my pencil invention to write a book would be sued for plagiarism

  • I had to watch this to know who the fuck they are since I'm going to parklife festival, Manchester. I won't be watching them.

  • father and sond "Cat Stevens"

  • Cat stevens plagiarism

  • i band i wanna see is steve from flaming lips on drums les claypool on bass, jack white on guitar and damon albarn on keyboard

  • Discovered this through a Smallville album. Big fan now!

  • Lame Crap. Insipid , vacuous and jejune.

  • @dobbs1954 And despite your use of four different adjectives, you've still failed to formulate and intelligent criticism of the song.

  • cat copy

  • Old wayne coyne looks like young cat stevens.

  • That hurts

  • How do i tell Wayne Coyne that he totally looks like a naked Wilfred?

  • I love this song and The Cat Stevens tune also...Awesome video..Congratulations!!!

    Sasha

  • que bonita cancion C:

  • this s a cross a between Cat Stevens and the Mamma's and the pappas. Got to love it !

    :)

  • This is such a brilliant song. Yes, it does borrow elements from "Father & Son". However, the Flaming Lips has made it into something entirely different in texture, mood, and atmosphere. It's incredibly arrogant for anyone to copyright a particular melody, cadence, or chord progression.

  • I effin' love this song

  • im getting the vibe that wayne redid this song is this true?

either way bless wayne and his crew. love these guys.

  • Father & Son is a vastly different song; regardless

    of chord similarity....

  • this is nothing like Cat Stevens....

  • This song is actually really, really, really awesome, despite it really actually being an almost exact copy of Father and Son - which I also love!

  • Cat Steven's rip off, i'm glad he sued them.

    Sounds horrible anyway.

  • @Timothysd1996 Cat Stevens is ignorant to believe that he owns this chord arrangement. He as a musician should realize that there are chord patterns that simply exist and have been used in music for centuries in all different genres. Wayne Coyne claims that he didn't realize the similarities in the song until his producer pointed them out to him, and I personally believe Wayne, as I've been in similar situations before too.

  • this songs sounds nothing like cat stevens. this song fuckin rules,,,,,,

  • i think it's fairly obvious they used the father and son melody and cadence, but that doesn't mean this song doesn't have merit.

also, loved Coyne's response to the lawsuit settlement - "Anyway, Cat Stevens is never going to make much money out of us."

  • @shredwinterwaves

    Exactly.

"Good Artists Borrow, Great Artists Steal." These guys are great, imo.

  • Maybe they are both stevens...Its all a mystery.

No....but that would be great, then he would tell you all to stop being such idiots and dig the music.

You are all just a bunch of assholes.

  • Freaky Friday lol.

  • this melody ear like Father And Son - Rod Stewart /watch?v=CpZD80bfDyo

  • already listened to cat's song and its nowhere near equal to this song ...

  • Thanks to the drummer for this great song =)

  • Αυτό το βίντεο έχει προστεθεί στα Αγαπημένα σας.

  • i have a question what does cat stevens have to do with this song if youd tell id appriciate it

  • Muito bom esse som!

  • Cat Stevens!!

  • what a tune... what a voice!!

  • Love this song so much. Easily my favourite by them. It just reminds me of a more chill and simpler time in my life; nothing was hard. Everything was ordinary. And I was perfectly happy it being that way.

Ok that's the extent of my wannabe deep, pretentious comments.

  • Whoa, the sound is making my brain feel weird. Thanks @Zealant for letting us know what the fuck happened.

  • Am I the only one that noticed how obvious it is that this guy want to jerk off to deep purple?

  • @deeppurplerules1 well since i never said deep purple was a hair band, maybe re-read the comment. "use enough bait and we get a bite" is this what you do with your day, just leave dumb comments on whatever video as though your a critic for rolling fucking stone. Then as soon as anyone defends the band or bands that they feel best represents themselves, you come along and poke fun at them. Your a sad, sad human, if even that. Troll by definition.

  • flaming lips are the best band eveR

  • People people, the song is called Fight Test, not the comments.

  • frankly, I'd rather listen to this than cat stevens any day

  • @deeppurplerules1 well, its no smoke on the water.. Look dude you either get it or you dont, you obviously don't, so go find a new hair band to jerk off to.

  • @smokeordieganja Deep purple? a hair band? ha ha, don't think so..use enough bait and we get a bite...i reckon you're a Jamiroquai fan...or maybe Wham?. have a sense of humour mate. it's all good...

  • Comment removed

  • What a crock..rip off..girly...nasely, sappy piece of crap this is...and what's he doing with a dead possum on his noggin? Fashionable????Seriously this is Absolutely terrible..

  • @deeppurplerules1

    Deep Purple?

    Yousa a prissy nucka aintcha.

Step away from the keyboard, this is big boy time.

Can't we all like Tea for the Tillerman AND Yoshimi, why bother being cold in unfriendly territory?

  • @mrfudgeyhead come in spinner..

  • Wayne Coyne is the most fashionable man on the planet. is there a NYE Freakout 2011-2012?

  • In one moment of the live of every man we have on own Figth Test

  • @Capitankenji Do u mean... OUR figh test?

  • @DarthMeymar Yes that rigth, in the past i have a bunch of it

  • I love this song and the Cat Stevens tune too. I'm glad that awesome melody found new life in this song.

  • that's not confirmed. maybe coincidence? but the sentiment is appreciated.

  • yeah, i noticed the cat stevens thing right away - no prompting necessary dude

  • I don't understand ! how could you not like this song!???

  • The only real similarity I see between this song and Father and Son are that they are both just simple minor chord progression and have similar typing syncopation. Even if they sound similar that doesn't negate from the fact that The Flaming Lips are still an incredible band. They have plenty more amazing songs other than this one.

  • @grimjim182 but both melodies are practically the same. it's especially apparent when Cat sings in his "son" voice. hell, even the lyrics have similar motifs. Coyne and friends fucked up, they should pay for it.

  • @JanesInChains1990 They do pay for it. They happily agreed to pay royalties to Cat after it was pointed out to them how similar the two are. As I understand it, they didn't deliberately copy him, but acknowledge that there was probably a strong subconscious interest. Whatever, he's making money from it. Can't say fairer than that.

  • @JanesInChains1990

Well, you're apparently unaware, as are most of the retards in these comments, that Cat Stephens co-wrote this song along with The Flaming Lips, and David Fridmann. You cant really call this song a "rip-off" or a "fuck up."

  • @thpsthree

lolwat? butthurt Wayne Coyne dickrider detected. and it's not "Stephens".

  • @thpsthree "I want to go on record for the first time and say that I really apologise for the whole thing. I really love Cat Stevens. I truly respect him as a great singer-songwriter. And now he wants his money. There was a time during the recording when we said, this has a similarity to "Father And Son". Then we purposefully changed those bits. But I do regret not contacting his record company and asking their opinion.

  • @0satanisboring0 i thought cat islam had eschewed everything connected to the music industry??so why sue over a song from 1972,,,did he sue or the record co ???and like how much would the royalties from this song be worth $19.56 ,,,,

  • @whoarethebrainpigs I imagine it was the record company....and you never know..Ive heard the lips music in all kinds of corporate advertisments

  • @thpsthree "Maybe we could have gone 50-50. As it is, Cat Stevens is now getting 75 per cent of royalties from "Fight Test", We could easily have changed the melody but we didn't. I am really sorry that Cat Stevens thinks I'm purposefully plagiarising his work. I am ashamed.

  • @thpsthree "There is obviously a fine line between being inspired and stealing. But if anyone wanted to borrow part of a Flaming Lips song, I don't think I'd bother pursuing it. I've got better things to do. Anyway, Cat Stevens is never going to make much money out of us."- Wayne Coyne

  • @thpsthree you are wrong my friend...but i still wouldnt call this song a "rip-off" or a "fuck up"

  • @thpsthree where did you read that????sounds highly unlikely to me ....if they were co writing a song why would cat use one of his old songs ???

  • It's obviously a homage - A palimpsest, if you will!

  • wuts the stuff that the guy threatend the other guy with in his hand?

  • 3 South, lol. This is one of the greatest songs of all time. \m/

  • Sounds too much of a rip of cats stevens - father and son. Same lyrical flow just changed the words and modernised the background music. Suppose its ok but Cat Stevens song is 1000x better.

  • @rhythm2007mc man ive been saying that for years but no one would agree.... thank you!!

  • @barrielyons Probley cos not many people know music history and good music. Cats is one of the soundest people to have walk the earth. He's done alot for needy people, children etc and even before he gave music up to do work for god allah, his music was very touching. I dislike the abuse and insults he get for turning into a muslim, cos what ever race or religion, if your a good person, thats all that matter. P.S. Music thats not been heard in year will always be ripped of or used to inspire :)

  • @rhythm2007mc In your opinion the Cat Stevens song is better.

  • @pretentiouspigeon Yes, Maybe because its older and I heard it first. I also love the simplicity of it just being a mainly acoustic song. Maybe cos am learning to play guitar and am getting more into acoustic and folk songs. Also my dad used to sing it to me when I was a toddler to help me sleep, so I have sentimental memories to it. :) However, I do see them as two completely different song, all it is, I can hear the same rhythmic flows and similair lyric use.

  • @pretentiouspigeon This song must of been inspired by the Cat Stevens song :)

  • @rhythm2007mc I agree possible inspiration which I love seeing how things warp and change but at the same time its a completley different song and not just plain ripped :)

  • Is it my speakers or is this only one side of the stereo mix?

  • Anyone who gets upset about this song should go waste their time trying to get Jimmy Page to go buy Willie Dixon's kids a mansion for the first two Zeppelin albums.

  • @DjoniV hahahahahhahaha so true

  • Fight Test has the same chord progression in the verse and chorus as part of Father and Son. That same progression ( I - iii - IV - V) is in a ton of other songs. As far as the melody, only seven notes are the same: "If they were right I'd agree" is shortened to six notes - "When it came time to fight". A case could possibly be made if those notes were the core of the whole song, like say "He's So Fine" and "My Sweet Lord", but really, no - it's not lifted from Cat Stevens.

  • My friend said he saw them in ATL last night , and they didnt play this. He was pissed, lol

  • @PapagenoJuan2 That's because it was a Soft Bulletin play-through. And he shouldn't be pissed, that concert was nothing but amazing.

  • AHAHAHAH

  • Fuck Cat Stevens, he doesn't deserve royalties from this song.

  • @Sleepinglikesheep lol, tit.

  • Anyone that just clicked on this to bitch about the similarities with Cat Stevens needs to die. Seriously, both are good songs, but this kicks the SHIT out of his tune in every way. Great minds think alike I assume, even if one of those minds is a fucking washed up douche.

  • The Flaming Lips ripped this off from Cat Stevens? Yeah, I read that on Wikipedia too . . . It's bullshit. Next you're going to tell me that Led Zeppelin ripped off Willie Dixon . . . :D

  • I don't think of this song as being about a fist fight over a girl. I love this album.

  • i like the flaming lips, but u gotta admit, their are very apparent similarities to father and son by cat stevens. i like both the flaming lips and cat stevens both are great musicians

  • Probablemente yo mismo debería aplicar lo que dice esta canción, olvidar lo bien visto y darle pasión a lo que quiero, pelear por ese ideal...

  • Luv this band ! Thanx for posting...

  • que temonnnn!!!!!

  • Cats stevens doesn't own the chords! fucking jesus! noone does!. its sounds completely different. different lyrics. different song. is Wayne Coyne playing a Jaguar in this video?

  • If the Cat Stevens song is using the chords G D C Am7, G Am well then the chords are not the same just the progression sounds the same because The Flaming Lips song actually uses A C#m D Em, A C#m Em..... At least this is the chords that the guitar tab sites on the net give for it but you still have a point that no musician has the patent on particular chords and nearly every song can be compared to another!!

  • Whoever uploaded this was trying to upload the 5.1 mix from the SACD version of the album, meaning, it's got three channels missing that weren't mixed down into stereo, and therefore it sounds rather FUCKED UP. How you wouldn't notice this, I have no idea.

  • @Zealant the 5.1 dolby surround 3D sound sounds AWESOMEEEE!!

  • @Zealant I thought I was the only one who noticed that. XD It sounds cool in some parts, like at the end when you hear the back up vocals better, but other times it sounds pretty fucked up.

  • I apologize for the tone in my comment four months ago - I was just annoyed. But really, this would be an easy fix.

  • @Zealant Chill.

  • @Zealant I actually think it sounds pretty cool.

  • I am a massive Lips fan and have been for nearly 20yrs or at least since I first heard Telepathic Surgery and must admit that my first time hearing this song I could hear the Cat Stevens similarity as the chorus came in. It has nothing to do with the lyrics, simply a similar chord progression. Lets not let this take away from the fact that it is still a fantastic song!!

  • @kevydlad cat stevens is listed as one of the songwriters for this song. all similarities are intentional and creditted.

  • @kevydlad Jeah, and the fact that those cat doesn't own progression: G D C Am7, G Am

  • I don't think Wayne denies the fact he stole the idea from Cat Stevens. Both are great songs, but this is clearly the EXACT same song, structure, flow, format, it is the same song...I would still listen to this over Cat Stevens, and The Flaming Lips are far from lacking creativity so who gives a care?

  • flaming lips... you amaze me.

  • really sounds like father and son-catstevens

  • the chorus makes me cry....

  • If beck and MGMT started a band this would be it even though these guys came before both

  • This video is too casual. It would be better if the Lips directed by themselves or Michel Gondry.

  • @idis0abad

    Me too!

  • Great song but this is what happens when you let your record label decide who's gonna direct your video.

  • cat stevens should choke these pussies out!!!! who listens to this shit?!!

  • @idis0abad nah yoshimi beat them all..

  • Been listening to rock and roll since 1963. 30+ years as a radio personality-Program/Music Director. 99.34% of all music made since 1992 is dreck. This, however, is quite possibly the best song I have ever heard...

  • The Lips do no wrong. I always thought this tune was about a guy fighting(or not fighting)over a chick. I don't think they tried to copy cat Stevens at all, maybe by chance or some shit. I thought immitation was the fondest form of flattery anyways. Only the lips could make a song about getting your ass kicked so pretty... God Bless Wayne.

  • the soundtrack to my dreams

  • Nobody mentions 911 Octopus. It is like a movie music video and that is where I first heard this. It is Great Music. This vid is a little disturbing. Yoshimi is a little better, no?

  • Really cool!

  • 2:22 John Bishop on guitar? :) Clearly not but he is a bit of a lookalike.

  • One day i found some movie on netflix called, "The Fearless Freaks". So i watched it, and after watching it i looked up "she dont use jelly" on youtube. I bought 3 of there albums on itunes and came across this song and fell in love with it. So one day i was listening to it in the car and my dad said that this sounded like Father and Son by Cat Stevens, so i looked him up. I dont care what people say but the Flaming Lips RULE!!! and cat stevens can suck it.

  • let's bring back hats with earflaps.

  • what really makes this video is that beautiful sunset!

  • Maybe someone told Coyne he looked abit like Cat Stevens so they decided to do a little tribute. They are strange like that if do not realize? already LOL

  • una hermosa y triste cancion :,(

  • All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,

It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it...

  • great song. video's shit.

  • Super pop pop super simply pop super pop

  • @idis0abad

They need an official video for "Yoshimi." Watching a kickass Japanese chick destroying evil robots would be awesome.

  • how can i try to explain, when i do he turns away.......yeah

  • awesome

  • these guys came so far from 'she dont use jelly'.... i am thoroughly baffled by the insane about of talent they possess, and the progress theyve made. one of the greatest bands of all time, and the most entertaining live musicians to ever exist.

  • if someone thereatened me with a handfull of shit... I WOULD MAKE HIM EAT IT!!!

  • @fullmetaljkt is that what happened? I couldn't figure out what he told the guy to make him back off. Couldn't that guy just kick his ass anyway?

  • great song but a woeful video

  • Just a carefree, motivational, reflective song. <3 you flaming lips.

  • when i first listened to this album i pictured giant robot armies, small rebellions and a super japanese girl losing on the unfair battle for survival....and well i'm still trying to figure out what does the vids have to do with any of those ideas......

  • oh yea, guy in the brown bonnaroo shirt is real intimidating

  • he is with a hand full of shit

  • he is with a hand full of shit

do you remember thet MTV animated show thet used to have this as the intro song what hapend to thet it was good

  • @MrPusseater 3-South. That's why I love this song.

  • @jzbadblood hell yeah man... I was in 8th grade when that show was on. and this song was the intro.. Was a short lived show that was underrated. Luckily I found the entire season and made it into a DVD for my own viewing pleasure

  • @elsofaraway upload them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • @idis0abad haha me too!

  • Superb song! Similarity to Cat Stevens in undeniable, but what does it matter. Flaming lips were one of the most original bands of the period, and Soft Bulletin one of the best albums....

  • yes, are the maximum

  • Comment removed

  • @kgoodies008 actually I had heard nothing about the legal issues/similarities when I stumbled across it, but I felt it sounded really similar to a song I knew. Finally, I realized it was father and son.

  • @kgoodies008 Not true at all. Heard this for the first time today and I could tell it was stolen for "Father and Son".

  • @leggomyeeko Really? I've listened to both of them and I can't see any resemblence betwwen the songs.

  • @leggomyeeko Really? I've listened to both of them, back to back, and I can't see any resemblence between the songs.

  • @DavidbarZeus1 It wasn't even the lyrics at first. It's the melody, the way the song is sung and the background singing.

  • @DavidbarZeus1 Hahaha you can't see ANY?? Really? Are you deaf or delusional?

  • @KelsoStyle19 No I am not. If I were deaf, would I be listening to music videos. All I'm saying is that A: the lyrics are nothing alike and B: the music is only VAGUELY similar. There is no connection between this and Father & Son.

  • @DavidbarZeus1 I do have to disagree with you here. If there were NO connection, then people wouldn't think there might be. Besides, I do here the verse in both songs having similarities, and I listened to them both back to back too.

  • @kgoodies008 maybe if you were musically illiterate, it's to obvious and t\father and son was a massive massive hit, your wrong. fag.

  • @kgoodies008 Subtle nothing - Completely different, faster rhythym and stylistically unique, has its own lyrics and is clearly the better use of the tune. But it's almost note-for-note the same song.

  • @kgoodies008 i spotted it when i heard the song, dont hate appreciate

  • @kgoodies008 -- I can only speak for myself, but in my case you're just wrong. Except I did it in reverse. I had never heard the Stevens' song, but knew Fight Test fairly well. I was in a restaurant when I heard the same distinct melody in a song I did not recognize and thought "this is a blatant rip off of the Flaming Lips!!" only to realize the song I was listening to was Cat Stevens and predated Fight Test by 30 years. I dont think it was plagiarism though, more subconscious influence.

  • @scdfndr ha that happened to me too, except for the restaurant bit.

  • @kgoodies008

a friend of mine linked me this song, we always exchange music, I didn't even see this till it was done playing because I was working on something, I genuinely thouhght it was a cover at first it sounded so similar. Dunno how you can think it's subtle.
