I know this song is about Hubbard and was written long before another man's death...but I like to imagine this is about Jerry Falwell. Like to think Maynard would've written the same exact lyrics for him, too :)
its not about jesus christ its about Lafayette Ronald Hubbard who made scientology he was very controversial in a video Maynerd dresses up like LRH in a live concert, they also talk about him in aenema " Fuck L Ron Hubard and fuck all his clones" clones as in his follower they also say it in interview but sceptics also belive that it might be about Kurt Kobain.
I have noticed this song and Vicarious have three groups of six syllables at the end of them. "To ascend you must die, you must be crucified, for our sins and our lies. Vicariously I, Live while the whole world dies, much better you than I."
@confront5 If you go to toolband.com and click on Lyrics and click on AEnima, it IS in fact "swallowed his facade cause I'm so eager to identify." Those are official lyrics from the band itself. Not to nit-pick, but just so everyone knows!
I believe this is a semi-sarcastic Eulogy for BIll Hicks. This album was dedicated to him, and he was a martyr. He believed in something and spread it out among the crowds, no matter the ending solution. He was a bold man. Much respect goes out to Bill Hicks. Too bad the good die young, but then again, it's just a ride.
To me, this means religious zealots who are ethnocentristic and point the finger at everyone but self. I live in the Bible Belt...so, yeah. It's like living in Jerusalem during Jesus's day, I suppose. It's really "lukewarm" to quote Revelations, because the attitude just sucks the flavor out of everything, like flat soda or cooled soup.
I believe the song's portraying anyone who's deemed higher in society. Celebrities and other people 'above the crowd'. "Get off your cross" is like saying "get off your high horse". You are no better than any other person. The song may refer to anyone much like Jesus or L. Ron Hubbard. Those are 2 prime examples of people that are looked up to, or worshiped.
Can someone explain their view on the L.Ron Hubbard reference to this song?? Not picking argument just curious...To me this song sounds like a complete reference to Jesus?? I believe in Jesus so this song has always been a guilty pleasure....
@Johnwestly15@Johnwestly15 I don't really think it's about jesus. The character portrayed here seems very narrow minded and egocentric. It's about those pitiful little pervert reverends who think they're the only one that are on the right track. I live in a muslim country so I really can figure out what kind of person they're talking about. It's those "Jesus" wannabees and "Muhammad" wannabees who are in fact really not awakened spiritually, religion has just emphasized their ego.
@InfinityDz I agree with you, I never thought it was about Jesus just because it says "cross" and "martyr", because there are many other parts that would not make sense (No way to recall / What it was that you had said to me; and i don't think you can associate Jesus with the idea of yelling in the crowd); it seems more like it's about someone that he knows personally (or that anyone of us can know personally) and that he spoke with, and that's why I don't even think it's about L.Ron Hubbard...
@Lexia89 exactly. It's the part you quoted which makes me believe it has nothing to do with Jesus. I don't see Jesus "ranting and pointing his finger at everything but his heart". I don't know who Ron Hubbard is but the song is definitely about someone who is really passionate about religion and who thinks he's the one who'll lead the way to "save the world" from its "doom", when in fact he's just a small egotistic person who truly knows nothing about life or love.
@InfinityDz L. Ron Hubbard was the founder of Scientology (widely believed to be a cult). Maynard is certainly no fan of it. Hence the lyrics in the song Aenema: "Fuck L. Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones"
To clear things up Danny Carey said this is about Ron Hubbard which is mentioned by wikipedia and the cd was dedicated to Bill Hicks since they felt he was on the same track as the band.
not all martyrs see divinity, but at least you tried....this song is so my dad....i miss him so much. fuk everyone. i'm ready to burst. just fucking explode....say something to me. i will NOT be hesitant to smack you. war vets son. i love you dad. miss you.

That sucks. This was my favorite song...I wanted it played at my funeral lol. But now that I read the lyrics their is no denying. It is definitely about Christ and definitely demonic in nature. The devil himself was created with pipes and timbrels, and all sorts of musical instruments within his being, and this song is a direct representation of his deceitful and cunning nature. Sorry Tool, may the LORD God Almighty grant you salvation, and shed His glorious light on your troubled souls.
@Son7of7God7 Oh and you had the 777th comment. Nice work, troll. LOL @ these comments. Jesus was not a real person, and the Bible is a book of fuckin' fairy tales. This song is about the lying assholes who use religion for profit. Most likely the song was inspired by L. Ron Hubbard's death, but certainly not limited to being specifically about him. Enjoy your day, everyone.
@Son7of7God7 This song is about anyone you want it to be about. just because it mentions martyrs and crosses doesnt mean its directed towards. you are so un-intelligent, i feel bad for you.
@Son7of7God7 You idiot. This song is about anyone you want it to be about. Just because it mentions a cross doesn't mean it's directed towards Jesus. You are so un-intelligent i feel bad for you.
Perhaps the song could be about both Bill Hicks (brilliant satirist) AND Jesus Christ (brilliant prophet). What's neat (sorry) is that this possibility is couched in some very cool music.
Oh yeah...fuck all you idiots that don't "get it."
I'm sorry Maynard Keenan, you were an awesome singer but I just can't let you disrespect my daddy like that and its a special place in hell for a man who can blaspheme God like that I'm not judging I'm simply repeating what the Bible says....I feel sorry for You and everyone that listens and is swayed by your musical talent
@IsidrosLot9 he isn't disrespecting Jesus dickfuck. and did you know hundreds of pages of the bible were torn and replaced by the Romans. and also this song is about whoever you want it to be. think for yourself. so the fact that you automatically think that this song is about Jesus says alot for your security about your religion. i was raised christian and that you would say that he has a special place in hell is blasphemous. your supposed to nat judge someone in your religion that's gods job.
@millsap72 The Word of God clearly says in the book of 1 Corinthians 2:15 he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. I'll come back to that later but I didnt specifically say Maynard I said a man who can blaspheme God you put Maynard in that category sooo this is the case where if the shoe fits wear it lol, going back to the scripture, if Maynard is a Christian and believes in Christ any man who judges him judges him unrighteously. I love you guys have a good one
@IsidrosLot9 wait a minute, doesn't your Bible say "Judge not lest ye be judged yourself"? If so, everybody gets to judge Christianity, whereas Christianity has no place to judge. So go thump another Bible, damage your children and create make believe monsters that will get you if you don't believe in your Sky daddy. Good Day in this BIG BANG CREATED EARTH that we EVOLVED human beings (who where not created by some sky daddy.)
The first time i got the lyrix, this song coulda been bout me. i think it speaks 4 anyone who's had jack with all the bullshit we're told, & who's looking 4 the strength 2 rise above it all through any means available
To bad Maynard wont write a song about how he feels about Mohammad. But then I suppose that would be too disrespectful to all the Muslims out there.. That, and all the death threats would be kinda irritating:p
@KILLER21402 You sure. My parents shoved Christianity down my throat when I was a kid. I never saw the grace of God or could picture him as a loving father. Instead all I saw was a sadistic bastard that brought pain unto the world. But I believed hoping he wouldn't send me to Hell. In the end I became a depressed child scared of life itself because life brings death and death brings hell. I'm glad I'm atheist now.
@metalwolf515 man i like the song but i believe that there is smthing that created me...Maybe you're parent's made you to believe the (wrong) side of christianity..
katholik i suppose??Orthodox man is what i believe..i'm just saing i'm not trying to make you believe.. we have met real saint in greece.like paisios he has done myrrickles can say the future.he talked about and all happend maybe i'm wrong maybe not. you may lought but it's ok some believe some not
@ilovemetaalll I'm ok with people believing. I encourage it because it can give people hope. I just don't like it when believers have to try to cram their beliefs down everyone's throats whether they're Christian, Muslim, or even Atheist. If what you believe in makes you happy good for you. Just don't force people to believe.
@metalwolf515 y i don't say i belive everything... i belive parts...and i totally agree with you i don't like people ho try to cram their biliefs down everyones throat..cheers... by the way tool 4 ever
@metalwolf515 This song has nothing to do with Christianity, and Maynard is not even anti-religious or anti-Christian for that matter. If you seen his commentary on the song "Judith" he explains how he supports how Christianity supports love but not about how some people shove it in other people's face. Yes I'm sorry you had a bad experience with bad Christians, but for me on the other hand, Christianity saved me from depression along with music.
This means that religious people are cowards...they are scared to die. So they felt the need to depend on some imaginary, jewish, space zombie to save us! Make room for another imaginary god/prophet to brainwash people with!
@DJSification i know up until high school Maynard lived in Ravenna, Ohio (an hour from cleveland) which he mentions in the song jimmy and on one of the interviews on here- but yeah you're right he did live outside Grand Rapids when his mother became paralyzed/died or whatever
@Zorroo93 This song has nothing at all to do with Ryan Dunn (RIP), you are in the right place for finding new inspiration and enlightenment though which you obvouisly need, having suggested this masterpiece is in any way associated with Ryan (RIP)
dont mind me getting off topic but i think humanity is is not supereor but inferour and is meant to extermanate all other life form if ur looking in gods path but can somehow relate to scientific facts to idk maybe some were along the line we took a wrong turn somewere idk i like to think so but take me adive if this got to u some doors are meant not to b opened
The funny bit was when you all assumed this song is about Jesus and Christianity. The Muslim faith is more synonymous with Martyrs, in fact if u are to become a martyr there will be 72 virgins in paradise waiting for you. Where was the mentioning of Jesus in this song? People can be so one eyed at times.
@curlysue10wm1 Just because it says get off your cross doesn't mean its about Jesus. People say that all the time to people who try to paint themselves as martyrs. Also, the next line is about needing the space for the next fool martyr. Implying that the fool martyr in question is one in a long line of fool martyrs. It could be anyone, Jesus, LRon, David Koresh... but considering how they feel about Hollywood. Who do you think it is?
@jonathanh475 the word martyr is based on Joseph Martyr, a roman who openly courted Christianity for the benefit of Rome. It worked out well for Rome, too. "Render unto Caesar"
@Raynecolwell I think this is the first time I've ever seen anyone on a tool video say they "like Jesus". Most atheists or just non-believers in general HATE Jesus, I think it's really disrespectful toward him.
@DarkestofTimes Really? that's interesting. I'm an agnostic and truly like his philosophies. I don't see any reason to hate him, perhaps dislike his beliefs at most. but he was able to change the ethical views or the Romans completely, I sure as hell don't have to be religious to appreciate this. to clarify this is in response to the post about non-religious people hating Jesus. furthermore, I know some religious people that like Tool perhaps talk with some atheist philosophers?
@DarkestofTimes That is entirely possible, I live in Oregon, a state that's quite tolerant of others beliefs or ways of life all around. of course, we still see some of this extreme side.
@Darkflare221 I live in Indiana, I don't have a lot of trouble here either. Though people are incredibly rude sometimes. And most of the teenagers listen to shitty music.
@kroovyandcal that's actually the same argument I've made several times. Some people just keep arguing to because they're not actually atheist they just think they are...they're actually closer to satanists.
@Raynecolwell this song is about Bill Hicks...not christ..even though you might wanna thnk that cause it says cross and its heavy music....there is even a picture of bill in the album..watch some Bill Hicks and then listen to this..you will see..and actually Maynard and TOOL were and are big fans and preach alot of the things he said and believed..he's pretty genius actually..not trolling..just sharing with other fans.have a nice life ;) "][" [{}][{}] ||_
@gscott419 well it seems everyone has a different view, some say Bill Hicks? the founder of christian science? Jesus? Idk... but the song doesnt sound like they care for this person. So i dont think its about bill hicks. shrugs.
The thing I've realized about Tool is that there songs have a deeper meaning to everyone, not just one deeper meaning/ tool simply looks at the way life originated and came about, evil, negative energy, holy, positive energy, or whatever you believe..
heard this song is about jesus and hitler: "ranting and pointing his finger, everything but his heart..". if thats the case its a pretty dichotomous juxtaposition of historical figures in one eulogy. such a polarizing theme would arguably be humanistic and would be somewhat consistent with the cryptically altruistic message of AEnima
I know this song is about Hubbard and was written long before another man's death...but I like to imagine this is about Jerry Falwell. Like to think Maynard would've written the same exact lyrics for him, too :)

@IsidrosLot9 he isn't disrespecting Jesus dickfuck. and did you know hundreds of pages of the bible were torn and replaced by the Romans. and also this song is about whoever you want it to be. think for yourself. so the fact that you automatically think that this song is about Jesus says alot for your security about your religion. i was raised christian and that you would say that he has a special place in hell is blasphemous. your supposed to nat judge someone in your religion that's gods job.
millsap72 7 months ago
@millsap72 The Word of God clearly says in the book of 1 Corinthians 2:15 he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. I'll come back to that later but I didnt specifically say Maynard I said a man who can blaspheme God you put Maynard in that category sooo this is the case where if the shoe fits wear it lol, going back to the scripture, if Maynard is a Christian and believes in Christ any man who judges him judges him unrighteously. I love you guys have a good one

gujmach 6 months ago
@IsidrosLot9 wait a minute, doesn't your Bible say "Judge not lest ye be judged yourself"? If so, everybody gets to judge Christianity, whereas Christianity has no place to judge. So go thump another Bible, damage your children and create make believe monsters that will get you if you don't believe in your Sky daddy. Good Day in this BIG BANG CREATED EARTH that we EVOLVED human beings (who where not created by some sky daddy.)

To bad Maynard wont write a song about how he feels about Mohammad. But then I suppose that would be too disrespectful to all the Muslims out there.. That, and all the death threats would be kinda irritating:p

@KILLER21402 Nope just the fact that most of the shit in the Bible is complete horseshit means God doesn't exist. Plus modern science.
Slaytounge 7 months ago
@KILLER21402 You sure. My parents shoved Christianity down my throat when I was a kid. I never saw the grace of God or could picture him as a loving father. Instead all I saw was a sadistic bastard that brought pain unto the world. But I believed hoping he wouldn't send me to Hell. In the end I became a depressed child scared of life itself because life brings death and death brings hell. I'm glad I'm atheist now.

ilovemetaalll 1 month ago
@ilovemetaalll I'm ok with people believing. I encourage it because it can give people hope. I just don't like it when believers have to try to cram their beliefs down everyone's throats whether they're Christian, Muslim, or even Atheist. If what you believe in makes you happy good for you. Just don't force people to believe.

willylump32 1 month ago
@metalwolf515 This song has nothing to do with Christianity, and Maynard is not even anti-religious or anti-Christian for that matter. If you seen his commentary on the song "Judith" he explains how he supports how Christianity supports love but not about how some people shove it in other people's face. Yes I'm sorry you had a bad experience with bad Christians, but for me on the other hand, Christianity saved me from depression along with music.

@KILLER21402 You don't need a god to feel that way. And I assure you that the method of your death can easily take that welcoming attitude away.

Goodbye fool martyrs
mdolanfunnyman 9 months ago
The funny bit was when you all assumed this song is about Jesus and Christianity. The Muslim faith is more synonymous with Martyrs, in fact if u are to become a martyr there will be 72 virgins in paradise waiting for you. Where was the mentioning of Jesus in this song? People can be so one eyed at times.
jonathanh475 9 months ago
@jonathanh475 well it sayed get of ur f***ing cross and who do we know the died on a cross
curlysue10wm1 8 months ago
@curlysue10wm1 Just because it says get off your cross doesn't mean its about Jesus. People say that all the time to people who try to paint themselves as martyrs. Also, the next line is about needing the space for the next fool martyr. Implying that the fool martyr in question is one in a long line of fool martyrs. It could be anyone, Jesus, LRon, David Koresh... but considering how they feel about Hollywood. Who do you think it is?
venwik 8 months ago
@jonathanh475 the word martyr is based on Joseph Martyr, a roman who openly courted Christianity for the benefit of Rome. It worked out well for Rome, too. "Render unto Caesar"

@Raynecolwell I think this is the first time I've ever seen anyone on a tool video say they "like Jesus". Most atheists or just non-believers in general HATE Jesus, I think it's really disrespectful toward him.

@Raynecolwell Good For You Dude *Thumbs Up*
DarkestofTimes 8 months ago
@DarkestofTimes Really? that's interesting. I'm an agnostic and truly like his philosophies. I don't see any reason to hate him, perhaps dislike his beliefs at most. but he was able to change the ethical views or the Romans completely, I sure as hell don't have to be religious to appreciate this. to clarify this is in response to the post about non-religious people hating Jesus. furthermore, I know some religious people that like Tool perhaps talk with some atheist philosophers?
Darkflare221 8 months ago
@Darkflare221 Maybe I get the really extreme end of atheism.
DarkestofTimes 8 months ago
@DarkestofTimes That is entirely possible, I live in Oregon, a state that's quite tolerant of others beliefs or ways of life all around. of course, we still see some of this extreme side.
Darkflare221 8 months ago
@Darkflare221 I live in Indiana, I don't have a lot of trouble here either. Though people are incredibly rude sometimes. And most of the teenagers listen to shitty music.
DarkestofTimes 8 months ago
@DarkestofTimes Oh yeah that's true here as well, the music part that is.
Darkflare221 8 months ago
@DarkestofTimes Most atheist or non-believers shouldn't hate Jesus because most do not believe he existed. Nothing there, then nothing to hate
kroovyandcal 6 months ago
@kroovyandcal that's actually the same argument I've made several times. Some people just keep arguing to because they're not actually atheist they just think they are...they're actually closer to satanists.

The thing I've realized about Tool is that there songs have a deeper meaning to everyone, not just one deeper meaning/ tool simply looks at the way life originated and came about, evil, negative energy, holy, positive energy, or whatever you believe..
IhuntIseekIkill 9 months ago
@IhuntIseekIkill Exactly tool rights songs to mean something to different to everyone. there are as many meanings as people in the world
MegaBongzilla420 8 months ago
heard this song is about jesus and hitler: "ranting and pointing his finger, everything but his heart..". if thats the case its a pretty dichotomous juxtaposition of historical figures in one eulogy. such a polarizing theme would arguably be humanistic and would be somewhat consistent with the cryptically altruistic message of AEnima
